  • The speed of train has rapidly been increased in accordance with the developed railway technology. Nowadays, high-speed trains were introduced which has the speed faster than 400 km/h. In Korea, a lots of efforts were undertaken to increase the speed of train faster than 350 km/h, however noise and vibration are still the main problems to solve for realization of the high-speed train. In the case of operation speed faster than 350 km/h, it can be easily presumed that the noise and vibration damages could be increased in the train stations which are close to the passing railway tracks. Thus, the noise in the five different types of high-speed train stations were analyzed including stations built on the ground, underground, under rail, and two types on rail. The present paper predicts noises inside the stations depending on the speed of the passing trains and analyze the noise comparing with noise criteria (NC). Sound insulation performance of each part of buildings was calculated using the transmission noise formula and computer modeling, Finally, a series of processes were introduced to satisfy the aural environment with the optimum interior noise criteria by changing interior finishing materials.

  • A large-scale fire test was done for interior materials from a vehicle installed within a fire test room. The interior materials are the old style before interior replacement by the Korean guideline for the safety of rail vehicle. Ignition source (gas burner) was increased in several controlled steps. The objectives of this test are to assess the fire performance in terms of ignition and flame spread on interior lining materials and to provide data on an enclosure fires involving train interior materials that grow to flashover. This data will be used to develop and calibrate an Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS) model for fire growth on the interior vehicle.

  • Crashworthy design of a train is a systematic approach to ensure the safety of passengers and crews in railway transportation for the prescribed accident scenarios. This approach needs new structural arrangements and designs to absorb higher levels of impact energy in a controlled manner and interior designs to minimize passenger injuries. In this paper, an evaluation method for crashworthiness of Korean tilting train express is introduced. Crush characteristics for each part of tilting train express are evaluated numerically through 3-dimensional shell element analysis with LS-DYNA. Based on a head-on collision and a level crossing collision scenarios, the crash behaviors of tilting train express are evaluated numerically using full-rake collision simulations.

  • Using composite materials for the carbody of tilting train has many advantages such as manufacturing variety, specific high-strength & stiffness characteristics, and long-life durability, but the strongest advantage could be the possibility of lightweight product. In the leading countries, the composite materials are used for the material fur drivers'cabs, interior/exterior equipments for railway train, and it is now developing the composite materials applied for the train carbody structure. In this paper, we conducted the evaluation of structural stability for the aluminum and composite carbody of the Korean Tilting Train express(TTX) with the service speed of 180km/h.

  • Design for improved usability is to understand products from the user's point of view so eventually to enhance the pleasantness users by reflecting it into the design. The philosophy of user-oriented design is an essence of human-centered product planning, and its application is more important for railway vehicle design, which is closely connected with everyday life. This study focused to define basic elements of train interior design concept, which considers convenience and comfort for passengers, by extracting and interpreting ergonomic requirements, as usability factors, of train toilet design. The study on user-oriented design of trains consists of the practice of sensibility engineering for the management of customers' emotions and its harmonious use on design, and aims on the embodiment of new ergonomic design. In the center, it has analyzed the criteria and characteristics of the user-oriented design and has concluded the design direction and components to a concrete idea and proposed prototypes, which may become a good example for train interior design later on. In addition, it proposes a direction, which may become a guideline of ergonomic design, to secure competition capacity. Moreover this study is concentrated on the physical environment and human behavior of train toilet users, on the analysis of factors necessary for adequate toilet design, and on the understanding of interface between its users. What is more, it proposes a module of development process and methods of approaching the interface. The study presents a design standard, under which the concrete data of the characteristics and practicable range and the convergent demands accelerate to the module could be confirmed and criticized. The study on the usability is going to contribute to more pleasant and comfortable train environments and consequently, it's going to create new values of increased railway competitiveness by design.

  • The interior noise of KTX in tunnel is becoming the problem since the commercial operating in April 2004. The major sources of interior noise for High speed train ate known as the aerodynamic noise and rolling noise generally. We measure the noise and vibration inside KTX in tunnel in order to find the cause of the interior noise of KTX. The analysis results show that the interior noise of KTX in tunnel with concrete track is increased sharply by a low frequency below 80Hz that is the natural frequency of the KTX carbody. We know that the booming noise inside KTX in tunnel with concrete track is generated by aerodynamic noise outside ganqway and rolling noise at the carbody natural frequency.

  • Until now, the carriage's design has been performed by built-carriage engineers in urban railway company without the notion of railway design. Furthermore, there is no prominent change the shape of exterior and interior design between the 1970's trains and the latest one. In terms of the notion of interior space, there are a lot of differences between Oriental and Western, also region of each countries. Especially, Among Orientals, Korean is not good at utilizing the small space and react effectively as compared to Japanese. Therefore, the interior space of public transportation needs to be relatively developed to highly reasonable level in Korea. The purpose of this paper is to apply vernacular design elements for developing interior design in Korean lightrail, which is the next generation public transportation. In order to develope ideal interior design, the interior layout in carriage considers the emotional aspect as well as functional one. Also, the research of vernacular design in urban train can provide national character and traditional design and can make a success in a practical use and a visual effect. This study focused on the application of vernacular design elements for developing the design-processed model will be proposed the outline of interior layout and the shape of interior trims in the public transportation in Korea.

  • Experimental study is conducted to clarify pressure variation of the passenger cabin of conventional train. These pressure variation may give rise to the ear-discomfort. Generally ear-discomfort has been considered as a problem related to high speed train. Because there is also a good progress to speed-up for conventional line, this isn't only a phenomena related to high speed train any longer. In this study, tile pressure variation of interior, gangway and exterior of saemaeul passenger car is measured using the atmospheric pressure sensors in Honam line. From the results of experiment, the pressure variation per second almost close in upon the limitation in the case of Noryong tunnel. Therefore, to accomplish speed-up for conventional train, it may be necessary to study a serial ventilating and the airtightness of carbody.

  • The Korean high speed train(KHST), developed since 1996, is presently undergoing commissioning tests on the high-speed track as well as on the conventional track since 2002. The purpose of the commissioning test is twofold: first to verify the performance of the train-set and equipments, and to demonstrate system reliability. Last December, KHST has reached the maximum speed of 350km/h and a number of data proving the performance of the train has been acquired. Among the data noise level and pressure variation in a cabin are important factors effecting passenger's comfort. Discussed in this paper are interior noise and pressure variation when the train passes tunnels during the 350km/h test.

  • This paper deals with the noise source localization of the Korean High Speed Train (KTX) at the speed of 300 km/h. Using Microfonarray system and beamforming technology typical pass-by noise sources and their frequency characteristics are investigated. It is primarily aimed at investigating the location and characteristics of the high speed train emission. The results from the microphone array tests are also analyzed in relation to the remarks from analytic studies and experimental investigations on the high speed train that have been done with the intention of understanding the interior noise mechanism. The acoustical image shows the low frequency noise sources mainly at the position of the under part of the train at high speeds and the related source mechanism are discussed.
