  • PURPOSES : The impact performance of flexible barrier system such as structural response, vehicular motion and occupant safety vary depending on the impact point. Thus, to properly evaluate the performance of a flexible barrier system, impact should be made to a point which will lead to the worst possible results. This point is called the Critical Impact Point (CIP). This paper presents the way to determine the CIP for a SB2 class flexible barrier system which is consisted of Thrie-Beam rail and circular hollow tube post of 2m span. METHODS: Barrier VII simulations were made for impact points; Case 1 at a post, Case 2 at 1/3 span downstream from a post, Case 3 at middle of the span, Case 4 at 2/3 span downstream from a post. For the structural performance (deflections), impact simulation of 8000kg-65km/h-15degree was used, and for vehicle motion and occupant safety, simulation of 1300kg-80km/h-20degree impact was made and analysed. RESULTS: Case 1 gave the largest dynamic deflection of 75.72cm and also gave the largest snag value of 44.3cm. Occupant safety and exit angle of the vehicle after the impact were not sensitive to the impact point and were all below the allowable limit. CONCLUSIONS : For the SB2 class flexible barrier system's CIP can be regarded as a post which is sufficiently away from the end of Length of Need in order to avoid the end-effect of the barrier system. It can be more economic in the long run because the normal concrete pavement material is likely to cost more due to higher probability of maintenance and repair and higher social cost due to traffic accident, etc.

  • In this paper, the performance of packet radio networks using the ALOHA protocol in Rayleigh fading channels is analyzed in terms of the capture probability and the throughput. We consider capture effect in order to increase the probability of the channel access and to include cellular environment we assume that the traffic is a truncated bell-shaped distribution. The packet proposed in this paper consists of a competition part and a data part to decrease the probability of collision in the channel access. In the competition part, DS system with common spreading code is used and in the data, hybrid DS/FH system is used. We consider the linear correlation receiver and the hard-limiting correlation receiver as the receiver model. BPSK modulation is also employed. Because hybrid DS/FH systems are not sensitive to variation of the interference power, as we choose a proper chip number N and a frequency hopping number q, we can obtain a steady system performance even though the variation of interference power is severe fading channels such as Rayleigh fading.

  • In this study, a field bridge test was conducted to find the dynamic properties of cable supported bridges with resilient-friction base isolation systems (R-FBI). Various ambient vibration tests were performed to estimate dynamic properties of a test bridge using trucks in a non-transportation state before opening of the bridge and by ordinary traffic loadings about one year later after opening of the bridge. The dynamic properties found from the results of the tests were compared with an analysis model. From the result of the ambient vibration tests of the cable supported bridge with R-FBI, it was confirmed that the dynamic properties were sensitive to the stiffness of the R-FBI in the bridge, and the seismic analysis model of the test bridge using the effective stiffness of the R-FBI was insufficient for reflecting the dynamic behavior of the bridge. In the case of cable supported bridges, the seismic design must follow the "Korean Highway Bridge Design Code (Limit State Design) for Cable supported bridges." Therefore, in order to reflect the actual behavior characteristics of the R-FBI installed on cable-supported bridges, an improved seismic design procedure should be proposed.

  • The congestion in wireless sensor network increases the ratio of data loss and causes the delay of data. The existing congestion protocols for wireless sensor network reduces the amount of transmission by control the sampling frequency of the sensor nodes related to the congestion when the congestion has occurred and was detected. However, the control method of sampling frequency is not applicable on the situation which is sensitive to the temporal data loss. In the paper, we propose a new congestion control, ACT - Adaptive Congestion conTrol. The ACT monitors the network traffic with the queue usage and detects the congestion based on the multi level threshold of queue usage. Given network congestion, the ACT increases the efficiency of network by adaptive flow control method which adjusts the frequency of packet transmission and guarantees the fairness of packet transmission between nodes. Furthermore, ACT increases the quality of data by using the variable compression method. Through experiment, we show that ACT increases the network efficiency and guarantees the fairness to sensor nodes compared with existing method.

  • This paper focuses on the development of analytical models for estimating the changes in saturation flow rates (SFR) at the stop-lines of a signalized intersection due to the existence of nearby work-zones, and thereby calculating the prevailing capacity values for specific lane groups. Major changes were incorporated in the logics of previous models and significant revisions have been made to secure the accuracy and simplicity. Furthermore, much attention was paid to model validation by making comparisons to both extensive simulation results and empirical data from various sites. It was found that SFRs are highly sensitive to the location of work-zones, the distance to each work-zone from the stop-line of a concerned approach, the number of lanes open and closed, and the effective green time. Using such geometric and operating conditions that constitute work-zone environment, the proposed models successfully estimated SFR values with a miniscule margin of error.

  • The incidence of brachial plexus injury is increasing because of the development of motor vehicle but the the results of treatment was reported poor due to its complex anatomical structure and changes of function and sensory during the recovery after trauma. But the results of treatment has been improved by the recently introduced high sensitive diagnostic method that can evaluate accurately the site and extent of the injury and treatment method. Restoration of the elbow flexion is the most important goal of treatment after brachial plexus injury and nerve graft, neurotization and muscle transfer were used for methods of treatment. From December 1992 to May 1994, the author performed 6 cases of latissimus dorsi transfer at the same side for the improvement of elbow flexion in the patients of brachial plexus injury. There were 5 cases of male, one case of female and average age was 22 years old. The causes of injury were traffic accident in 3 cases, gun shot injury, falldown and birth injury in each one case and in all cases, the type of injury were upper arm type. The average follow up period were 1 year 5 months ranging from 12 months to 4 years 5 months. In all cases, active elbow flexion was impossible before operation and average muscle power was grade I. We analysed the active range of motion, muscle power and the functional results. At the last follow up, range of active elbow flexion was average $124^{\circ}$ and flexion contracture was average 11 degrees and the average of muscle power was grade IV. In the functional analysis, there were two cases of excellent, three cases of good and 1 case of fair. There was no complications including wound infection, vascular compromise and donor site problem. The results of latissimus dorsi transfer for improvement elbow flexion in the patients of brachial plexus injury is one of the useful mettled for the restoration of elbow flexion.

  • We have presented a routing mechanism that selects a route by considering channel statuses in order to fast transfer delay-sensitive data in WSNs (Wireless Sensor Networks). The existing methods for real-time data transfer select a path whose latency is the shortest or the number of hops is the smallest. An algorithm to select a real-time transfer path based on link error rates according to the characteristic of wireless medium was also suggested. However, the propagation delay and retransmission timeout affected by link error rates are shorter than channel assessment time and backoff time. Therefore, the mechanism proposed in this paper estimated the time spent in using a clear channel and sending out a packet, which is based on channel backoff rates. A source node comes to select a route with the shortest end-to-end delay as a fast transfer path for real-time traffic, and sends data along the path chosen. We found that this proposed mechanism improves the speed of event-to-sink data transfer by performing experiments under different link error and channel backoff rates.

  • IEEE 802.1 TSN TG is developing standards for end-to-end delay bounds and zero packet loss based on Ethernet technology. We focus on packet forwarding techniques. TSN packet forwarding techniques can be classified into Synchronous and Asynchronous framework. Synchronous approach allocates fixed time period for a class, yet is complex for large networks. Asynchronous approach provides delay guarantee by regulator-scheduler pair, yet is unnecessarily complex, too. We propose network components for TSN Asynchronous architecture, which remove the complexity of maintaining flow state for regulation decisions. Despite such a simplicity, the proposed architecture satisfies the TSN's delay requirements provided the limited high priority traffic's maximum packet length.

  • Determination of the most meaningful structural modes and gaining insight into how these modes evolve are important issues for long-term structural health monitoring of the long-span bridges. To address this issue, modal parameters identified throughout the life of the bridge need to be compared and linked with each other, which is the process of mode tracking. The modal frequencies for a long-span bridge are typically closely-spaced, sensitive to the environment (e.g., temperature, wind, traffic, etc.), which makes the automated tracking of modal parameters a difficult process, often requiring human intervention. Machine learning methods are well-suited for uncovering complex underlying relationships between processes and thus have the potential to realize accurate and automated modal tracking. In this study, Gaussian mixture model (GMM), a popular unsupervised machine learning method, is employed to automatically determine and update baseline modal properties from the identified unlabeled modal parameters. On this foundation, a new mode tracking method is proposed for automated mode tracking for long-span bridges. Firstly, a numerical example for a three-degree-of-freedom system is employed to validate the feasibility of using GMM to automatically determine the baseline modal properties. Subsequently, the field monitoring data of a long-span bridge are utilized to illustrate the practical usage of GMM for automated determination of the baseline list. Finally, the continuously monitoring bridge acceleration data during strong typhoon events are employed to validate the reliability of proposed method in tracking the changing modal parameters. Results show that the proposed method can automatically track the modal parameters in disastrous scenarios and provide valuable references for condition assessment of the bridge structure.

  • The construction and operation of industrial automation has been actively taking place from manufacturing plan to production for improving operational efficiency of production line and flexibility of equipment. ISO/TC184 is standardizing on operating methods that can share information of programmable device controllers such as PLC and IoT that are geographically distributed in the production line. In this study, the design of the cell controller consists of PLC group and IoT group that perform signals such as temperature sensors, gas sensors, and pressure sensors for thermal processes and corresponding motors or valves. The operation and analysis of the cell controller were performed using SDN(Software Defined Network) and the three types of process services performed in thermal processes are real-time transmission service, loss-sensitive large-capacity transmission service, and normal transmission service. The simulation result showed that the average loss rate improved by about 17% when the traffic increased before and after the application of the SDN route technique, and the delay in the real-time service was as low as 1 ms.
