  • The scheduling scheme in packet switching networks is one of the most critical features that can affect the performance of the network. Hence, many scheduling algorithms have been suggested and some indices, such as fairness and latency, have been proposed for the comparison of their performances. While the nature of Internet traffic is bursty, traditional scheduling algorithms try to smooth the traffic and serve the users based on this smoothed traffic. As a result, the fairness index mainly considers this smoothed traffic and the service rate as the main parameter to differentiate among different sessions or flows. This work uses burstiness as a differentiating factor to evaluate scheduling algorithms proposed in the literature. To achieve this goal, a new index that evaluates the performance of a scheduler with bursty traffic is introduced. Additionally, this paper introduces a new scheduler that not only uses arrival rates but also considers burstiness parameters in its scheduling algorithms.

  • Media Access Control (MAC) Protocol in IEEE 802.11 Wireless LAN standard supports two types of services, synchronous and asynchronous. Synchronous real-time traffic is served by Point Coordination Function (PCF) that implements polling access method. Asynchronous nonreal-time traffic is provided by Distributed Coordination Function (DCF) based on Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Avoidance (CSMA/CA) protocol. Since real-time traffic is sensitive to delay, and nonreal-time traffic to error and throughput, proper traffic scheduling algorithm needs to be designed. But it is known that the standard IEEE 802.11 scheme is insufficient to serve real-time traffic. In this paper, real-time traffic scheduling and admission control algorithm is proposed. To satisfy the deadline violation probability of the real time traffic the downlink traffic is scheduled before the uplink by Earliest Due Date (EDD) rule. Admission of real-time connection is controlled to satisfy the minimum throughput of nonreal-time traffic which is estimated by exponential smoothing. Simulation is performed to have proper system capacity that satisfies the Quality of Service (QoS) requirement. Tradeoff between real-time and nonreal-time stations is demonstrated. The admission control and the EDD with downlink-first scheduling are illustrated to be effective for the real-time traffic in the wireless LAN.

  • In recent literature on traffic scheduling, the combination of the two-dimensional discrete-time Markov chain (DTMC) and the Markov modulated Poisson process (MMPP) is used to analyze the capacity of VoIP traffic in the cognitive radio system. The performance of the cognitive radio system solely depends on the accuracy of spectrum sensing techniques, the minimization of false alarms, and the scheduling of traffic channels. In this paper, we only emphasize the scheduling of traffic channels (i.e., traffic handling techniques for the primary user [PU] and the secondary user [SU]). We consider the following three different traffic models: the cross-layer analytical model, M/G/1(m) traffic, and the IEEE 802.16e/m scheduling approach to evaluate the performance of the VoIP services of the cognitive radio system from the context of blocking probability and throughput.

  • In this paper, we propose the modified dynamic weighted round robin (MDWRR) cell scheduling algorithm, which guarantees the delay property of real-time traffic and also efficiently transmits non-real-time traffic. The proposed scheduling algorithm is a variation of the dynamic weighted round robin (DWRR) algorithm and guarantees the delay property of real-time traffic by adding a cell transmission procedure based on delay priority. It also uses a threshold to prevent the cell loss of non-real-time traffic that is due to the cell transmission procedure based on delay priority. Though the MDWRR scheduling algorithm may be more complex than the conventional DWRR scheme, considering delay priority minimizes cell delay and decreases the required size of the temporary buffer. The results of our performance study show that the proposed scheduling algorithm has better performance than the conventional DWRR scheme because of the delay guarantee of real-time traffic.

  • An air traffic management (ATM) has been studied in a variety of fields to utilize an air traffic capacity efficiently and solve a congested air traffic situation due to an increment of an air traffic demand. In this paper, an air traffic management, which is related with controlling and determining the sequencing of an aircraft approaching to an airport, in terminal control area is studied. This paper focuses on scheduling algorithms with a given problem for the air traffic management with operational constraints, such as a space separation, an overtaking on the same air-route, and a route merge point (a scheduling point). For a real-time calculation, the presented algorithms focus on dispatching heuristic rules which are able to assign tasks in a fast time period with an adequate performance, which can be demonstrated as a proper and realistic scheduling algorithm. A simulation result is presented to illustrate the validity and applicability of the proposed algorithm. Each scheduling rule is analyzed on the same static and dynamic air traffic flow scenario with the ATM Monte-Carlo simulation.

  • This paper treats the interworking of LAN-based networks like TCP over the ATM protocol stack in an ATM multicast session. Multicast connection will cause CIP since multicast group members form a connection tree by some tree methods and share the connected tree. The paper solve the CIP problem through a block-by-block transmission using ABT/IT method. ABT/IT RM cell is modified and block scheduling algorithm considering the traffic types is applied to each ATM switch using the enhanced RM cell. Block scheduling algorithm will avoid the indiscriminate discard of UBR traffic when congestion occurs and it can provide an efficient and fair service. The paper builds a block scheduler system and suggests the block scheduling algorithm for a multicast session in an ATM switch. UBR traffics arriving at the switch trough each VC is classified by the traffic type and stored at class buffer and thereafter indisciminately transmitted. When block scheduling algorithm is applied it will improve the UBR traffic performance such as end-to-end delay cell block loss ration etc. This paper evaluated the performance of block scheduling algorithm through the simulation using the C language and data structure.

  • In this research, we propose packet scheduling algorithm considering different QoS characteristics of real-time traffic and non-real-time traffic in the next generation wireless communication system serving the multimedia traffic and a new efficient framing method cooperated with this packet scheduler. When the selected traffic classes of the selected users are transmitted, our proposed framing method can increase the number of serviced traffic classes by mixing the many different traffic classes within one frame considering data rate decided by the allocated AMC (Adaptive Modulation and Coding) option. Using this proposed method, the fairness among the traffic classes can be achieved and the system performance for total throughput and delay can be enhanced. Simulations are performed to analyze the performance of the proposed framing method. Our proposed packet scheduler and framing method will be applied to the next generation multimedia wireless communication system serving many traffic classes.

  • A cell scheduling method of Queue for the ATM switch is proposed and simulated. In this paper, we present the cell scheduling method proper to the proposed queue and the improved queue with Queue Sharing(QS) structure for CBR, VBR, ABR traffic. The proposed QS structure minimizes the CLS(Cell Loss Ratio) of ABR traffic and decreases the CLR of bursty VBR traffic. Also we propose a cell scheduling method using VRR(Variable Round Robin) scheme proper to the high-speed(ATM) switch. The VRR scheme provides a fairness in terms of service chance for the queues in the ATM switch as well as QOS of their cell delay characteristic of CBR and VBR traffic, QOS of ABR CLR. The simulation results show the proposed method achieves excellent CLR and average cell delay performance for the various ATM traffic services in the Queue Sharing structure.

  • In this paper, we propose a packet scheduling discipline called packet loss fair scheduling, in which the packet loss of each user from different real-time traffic is fairly distributed according to the quality of service requirements. We consider an orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) system. The basic frame structure of the system is for the downlink in a cellular packet network, where the time axis is divided into a finite number of slots within a frame, and the frequency axis is segmented into subchannels that consist of multiple subcarriers. In addition, to compensate for fast and slow channel variation, we employ a link adaptation technique such as adaptive modulation and coding. From the simulation results, our proposed packet scheduling scheme can support QoS differentiations while guaranteeing short-term fairness as well as long-term fairness for various real-time traffic.

  • In this paper, we consider a wireless multimedia environment to service both real-time video traffic and non-real-time WWW-application traffic In our suggested new packet scheduling algorithm, we consider both the accumulation counter and SIR to reduce delay in real-time traffic. In addition, our packet scheduling algorithm gives priority first to real-time video traffic service and then to non-real-time internet Packet service when real-time traffic service is absent. From the simulation results, we find that the AC (Accumulation Counter) scheme has much smaller delay than the conversional M-LWDF scheme for real-time video data users, which has a special quality sensitive to its own delay. We also consider the transmission structure of using both the frame period in the time-axis and the OVSF codes in the code-axis at the same time, which is similar to the structure of HSDPA system.
