  • Because of the continuous increase in the demand for and importance of marine space, marine exploration and survey activities are being actively conducted in Korea actively. Because the marine survey vessels used for these activities have special operational patterns depending on the purpose and probe vessels, research on maritime traffic risk is required. In this study, an attempt was made to determine the correlation of each factor with the effect of marine exploration and survey vessel operation on maritime traffic. The status of ocean exploration and survey vessels in operation in Korea was identified, as well as the special operational conditions of some of the ocean physical probes. Generally, the number of exploration and survey vessels involved per hour, total vessel length(including exploration equipment), operation, interval distance of exploration as per plan, and marine traffic conditions(traffic volume and speed) can be classified as operating factors. To compare the results of the environmental stress, a maritime traffic flow simulation based on the "ES" Model was performed with each of the identified operating factors as independent variables. The results of the analysis confirmed that the environmental stress significantly changed in the order of traffic volume, ship length and speed. In addition, it was confirmed that the environmental stress is reduced when the operation course is set at an angle with the nearby maritime traffic flow. Accordingly, it can help reduce the operator's burden if the survey vessel operator understands nearby maritime traffic conditions and reflects them in the operation method when setting the operation plan.

  • The coordinated control of the traffic signals of adjacent intersections can reduce delays, relative number of stops and congestions in the coordinated traffic area. The road capacity can be increased to a certain extend because the stopping and starting of vehicles facing red traffic lights can be avoided in many instances due to the progression established along an artery. However, if traffic centers or leaves the main flow in irregular volumes on the intermediate road section, a coordination of traffic signals is unnecessary and may even be harmful. Therefore, a computer simulation model to simulate and predict the effectiveness of a synchronized traffic signal system in the CBD of Seoul was developed and alternative policy variables, such as cycle time, offsets, phase splits, to be fed into the simulation model had to be generated. This is a report of (1) the development of a heuristic algorithm for the determination of phase splits when there are amber periods specifically reserved for left turns and (2) the computerization of time-space diagramming.

  • In order to establish a prediction method for road traffic noise generated from actual traffic flow, a new approach is proposed for practical use. One block in urban road is regarded as one box in this study. This prediction method is able to treat any kind of road traffic noise generated from one block. The validity of the proposed prediction method has been experimentally confirmed by applying it to actually observed road traffic noise data. The correlation between observed and predicted noise level is good.

  • The purpose of this study is to establish a walking energy weighted ERAM model that can predict the pedestrian volume by the connection structure of the vertical and horizontal spaces within a three-dimensional building. The process of building a walking-energy weighted ERAM model is as follows. First, the spatial graph was used to reproduce three-dimensional buildings with vertical and horizontal spatial connection structures. Second, the walking energy was measured on the spatial graph. Third, ERAM model was used to apply weights with spatial connection properties in random walking environment, and the walking energy weights were applied to the ERAM model to calculate the walk energy weighted ERAM values and visualize the distribution of pedestrian flow. To verify the validation of the established model, existing and proposed spatial analysis models were compared to real space. The results of this study are as follows : The model proposed in this study showed as much elaborated estimation of pedestrian traffic flow in real space as in traditional spatial analysis models, and also it showed much higher level of forecasting pedestrian traffic flow in real space than existing models.

  • It is very challenging to analyze the traffic flow in the city because there are lots of traffic accidents, intersections, and pedestrians etc. Now, even in mid-size cities Bus Information Systems(BIS) have been deployed, which have offered the forecast of arriving times at the stations to passengers. BIS also provides more informations such as the current locations, departure-arrival times of buses. In this paper, we perform the time-series analysis of the traffic flow using the data of the average trvel time and the average speed between stations extracted from the BIS. In the mid size cities, the data from BIS will have a important role on prediction and analysis of the traffic flow. We used the Dynamic Linear Model(DLM) for how to make the time series forecasting model to analyze and predict the average speeds at the given locations, which seem to show the representative of traffics in the city. Especially, we analysis travel times for weekdays and weekends separately. We think this study can help forecast the traffic jams, congestion areas and more accurate arrival times of buses.

  • According to the local highway tunnel ventilation guideline, ventilation capacity calculation should be performed at the speed ranging from 10 km/h to 80 km/h. This is so reasonable method considering uncongested and congested traffic conditions in urban tunnels. But recently due to low traffic volume and very low congestion frequency in rural highway tunnels, it seems to be an inadequate way to apply the guideline. Therefore the calculation should be performed separately for the free flow and congested traffic cases classified by the appropriate decision model. This paper aims at determining unnecessary running speed range for reasonable tunnel ventilation design, considering free flow and congested traffic conditions. Firstly, traffic volumes in highway tunnels were collected and if any, the causes of congestion were investigated. And with concept of 'margin speed'($u-u_m$), the decision model on traffic congestion was developed. Applicability of the decision model was also analyzed with case study. According to the results, when design speed is 100 km/h, with V/C less than 0.1, then the range of unnecessary speed in tunnel ventilation design is less than 40 km/h; for $V/C{\leqq}0.35$, $V/C{\leqq}0.6$ and $V/C{\leqq}0.75$, the unnecessary speed ranges are found to be ${\leqq}30$, ${\leqq}20$ and ${\leqq}10km/h$, respectively.

  • Busan New Port manages the largest volume of traffic among Korean ports, and accounts for 68.5% of the total volume of the Busan port. Due to this increase in volume, ultra large container ships call at Busan New Port. When the additional south container terminal as well as ongoing construction project of the west container terminal are completed, various encounters may occur at the Busan New Port entrance, which may cause collision risk.s Thus, the purpose of this study was to provide a plan to improve the safety of vessel traffic, in the in/out bound fairway of Busan New Port. For this purpose, the status of arrivals and departures of vessels in Busan New Port, was examined through maritime traffic flow analysis. Additionally, risk factors and safety measures were identified, by AHP analysis with ship operators of the study area. Also, based on the derived safety measures, scenarios were set using the Environmental Stress model (ES model), and the traffic risk level of each safety measure was identified through simulation. As a result, it is expected that setting the no entry area for one-way traffic would have a significant effect on mitigating risks at the Busan New Port entrance. This study can serve as a basis for preparing safety measures, to improve the navigation of vessels using Busan New Port. If safety measures are prepared in the future, it is necessary to verify the safety by using the traffic volume and flow changes according to the newly-opened berths.

  • A class of SWP(Stochastic Wane Propagation) models microscopically mimics individual vehicles' stochastic behavior and traffic jam propagation with simplified car-following models based on CA(Cellular Automata) theory and macroscopically captures dynamic traffic flow relationships based on statistical physics. SWP model, a program-oriented model using both discrete time-space and integer data structure, can simulate a huge road network with high-speed computing time. However, the model has shortcomings to both the capturing of low speed within a jam microscopically and that of the density and back propagation speed of traffic congestion macroscopically because of the generation of spontaneous jam through unrealistic collision avoidance. In this paper, two additional rules are integrated into the NaSch model. The one is SMR(Stopping Maneuver Rule) to mimic vehicles' stopping process more realistically in the tail of traffic jams. the other is LAR(Low Acceleration Rule) for the explanation of low speed characteristics within traffic jams. Therefore, the CA car-following model with the two rules prevents the lockup condition within a heavily traffic density capturing both the stopping maneuver behavior in the tail of traffic jam and the low acceleration behavior within jam microscopically, and generates more various macroscopic traffic flow mechanism than NaSch model's with the explanation of propagation speed and density of traffic jam.

  • The Purpose of this study is to develop a simulation model for large-scale network with interrupted flow as well as uninterrupted flow. The Cell Transmission(CT) theory is used to simulate traffic flow. Flow transition rules have been newly developed to simulate traffic flows at merging and diverging sections, and signalized intersections. In the model, it is assumed that dynamic OD table is exogenously given. Simulation results for toy network shows that the model can explain queue dynamics not only in signalized intersections of urban arterials, but also in merging and diverging sections of freeway. In case study, the model successfully simulated traffic flows of 145,000 vehicles on CBD network of city of Seoul with 74 traffic zones, 133 signalized intersections among 395 nodes and 1110 links.

  • These days Automated Vehicle(AV) has been receiving attention as a fundamental solution to resolve the various transportation problems and various researches related to the benefits of AV have been done. However, previous researches mainly analyzed the effects in the virtual network. The purpose of this research is to predict and to find out the benefits by introducing the Automated Vehicle to present road traffic system. Thus, the study analyzes the traffic-flow changes of Gyeongbu freeway Seoul-Singal basic section which is planned for setting the test-bed. The results show that Automated Vehicle can have negative effects on the traffic-flow in low volume of LOS A and B. However, the average speed increases and the traffic density decreases in more than LOS C, the traffic volume increase. Therefore, the introduction of Automated Vehicle achieves positive effect on various transportation problems such as the traffic congestion.
