  • Understanding of the properties of woods is important in wood utilization. Until now, traditional wooden houses(Korean-style house, Buddhist temple, royal palaces) and furniture have been made of domestic woods with the experience of a craftsman rather than the scientific knowledge on woods. Because of concrete-based houses and imported wood products and furniture, even wood craftsmen decrease in number, too. This study was carried out to collect wood samples growing in Korea and to measure wood characteristics. Anatomical, physical and mechanical properties of 37 wood species were investigated.

  • This study explores terminology for legs and feet in the traditional Korean and Western furniture. Pieces of traditional Korean and Western furniture have been largely made of the eco-friendly material, natural wood, and thus important in the latest trends of wellness, such as LOHAS (Lifestyles of Health and Sustainability) and a green period. Legs in traditional Korean furniture appeared in dinging tables, and the feet in wardrobes. The limited use of legs and feet seems to be influenced by floor-oriented lifestyles of Korean ancestors. In contrast, most pieces of Western furniture, which is from the chair and bed culture, have various styles of foot and leg. While th two groups are from different backgrounds, both of them have developed various legs and feet applying natural subjects such as animals and plants to each of their furniture including wardrobes, cabinets, dining tables, chairs, consoles, etc. It is also found that the traditional Korean furniture can be influenced by a traditional Chinese chair foot called Neabunmajae, which describes inner horse foot. Neabunmajae was known in Korean furniture legs and feet, but the terminology has not been known. The study suggests that terms which appear in traditional furniture but are unknown should be studied more.

Modular shelves can provide openness, closeness, and autonomy to individual spaces in a one-room space without space divisions. In a small one-room for residential purpose, it is able to function effectively to show the atmosphere of personal space and display small items reflecting personal taste in addition to the function of storing books and items. In addition, a modular shelves considering disassembly and movement are proposed in order to take advantage of one-room that can make different space configurations as needed. • This study is carried out to introduce the concept of Kagome structure as the new trial for the furniture design and the feasibility of its utilization in furniture industry. Kagome means originally the two dimensional bamboo-basket woven pattern that is composed of interlaced triangles whose lattice points each have four neighboring points, which was used in traditional bamboo craft design like 'Jukbuin(bamboo-wife)'. Its unique truss structure has been widely used by many kinds of the domain of science and engineering in mechanical and architectural industry with some merits, i,e, material utilization efficiency and robust strength. Here we tried to introduce two dimensional and three dimensional form of Kagome which are supposed to be a furniture design elements. Authors think these Kagome design could be realized with domestic lumber of inferior properties. Both of them would be used as a decorative element or mechanical supporter in furniture design.
