  • Traditional Korean architecture and traditional ships maintained a close relationship with carpenters and tools because wood, the material, was common. This close relationship may have been from the time of ancient architecture and ancient ships. In previous studies, researchers proved the relationship between these two sides through historical records of traditional architecture and traditional ships. This study attempts to prove the structural association using existing remains. As a result, three structural similarities between traditional architecture and traditional ships could be found. First, the types of wood used are similar, and the tools and terms used are similar. Second, the method of distinguishing horizontal and vertical materials and the structure of wood and the method of forming wood are similar. Lastly, the ship carpenters mobilized for the construction of the palace mainly worked on long and curved materials such as the eaves and the ridge of a roof, because this was the work done when the ship was built. Therefore, it can be assumed that the roof structure they created resembles that of the ship.

  • Recently, the wooden structure has been revived again as an eco-friendly structure technique. It is the counterattack of the wood material, which has become more recognized as a finishing material pushed by the concrete material in the rapid growth after the Industrial Revolution. However, it is difficult to conclude that this is a tendency of the construction market in the whole country. Perhaps this is a tendency to appear more strongly in Korea. It could be seen by comparing the characteristics of the overseas construction market with Korean's and the advanced constructed case of large-scale wooden structures in overseas. National wooden buildings show own characteristics such as construction methods, materials, and member dimensions of wood structures by country, which could be seen as a result of continuously developing their own technology. However, in Korea, despite its unique wooden structure and technology (Hanok; Korean traditional housing), it has not been developed continuously and treated it only as a living building exhibit. This is evidenced by the fact that only one percent of the building is constructed with traditional wooden building technology. Therefore, there are various efforts to modernize the traditional wooden structure technology, but it still does not reach the level of advanced wooden technology abroad. The characteristics of the Korean wooden building market were analyzed in order to suggest ways to develop the Korean wood structure technology. The characteristics of Hanok construction were analyzed through quantitative criteria to define the main development tasks for Hanok development to propose the long-term development path.

  • The capacity of a lateral load resistance of a joint with Jangbu-connection of Dori-directional frame in traditional wood structure system was studied, through experiments of 1/2 scaled and T-shaped 7 subassemblies of joint of Dori-directional frame for Deawoongjeon of Bongjungsa. From the experiment, it was shown that the capacity of a lateral load resistance was influenced by the vertical load confining joint and not influenced by the number of Chok and the depth of Changbang, And lateral load resistance mechanism is developed by the restraint between the vertical load and the contacting edge of column; if structure is pushed to the left, the top-right end of Pyeongju contacts with Changbang and left Changbang loses the contacts with Pyeongju and therefore only right Changbang can resist to lateral load.

  • This study is carried out to introduce the concept of Kagome structure as the new trial for the furniture design and the feasibility of its utilization in furniture industry. Kagome means originally the two dimensional bamboo-basket woven pattern that is composed of interlaced triangles whose lattice points each have four neighboring points, which was used in traditional bamboo craft design like 'Jukbuin(bamboo-wife)'. Its unique truss structure has been widely used by many kinds of the domain of science and engineering in mechanical and architectural industry with some merits, i,e, material utilization efficiency and robust strength. Here we tried to introduce two dimensional and three dimensional form of Kagome which are supposed to be a furniture design elements. Authors think these Kagome design could be realized with domestic lumber of inferior properties. Both of them would be used as a decorative element or mechanical supporter in furniture design.

  • This paper presents experimental and numerical tests on a recently developed timber column concealed base joint. This joint was designed to replace the wood-wood connection found in the post-and-beam structure of Hanok, the traditional Korean timber house. The use of metallic connectors provides an increased ductility and energy dissipation for a better performance under reversed loading, especially seismic. In this study, we investigate the performance of the joint under pseudo-static reversed cyclic moment loading through the study of its ductility and energy dissipation. We first perform experimental tests. Results show that the failure occurs in the metallic connector itself because of stress concentrations, while no brittle fracture of wood occur. Subsequent numerical simulations using a refined finite element model confirm these conclusions. Then, using a practical modification of the joint configuration with limited visual impact, we improve the ductility and energy dissipation of the joint while retaining a same level of rotational strength as the originally designed configuration. We conclude that the joint has a satisfying behavior under reversed moment loading for use in earthquake resistant timber structure in low to moderate seismicity areas like Korea.

  • Japanese larch glulam was used as structural members to develop a modern engineered wood jointing system using traditional post and beam structure. For the connections comprised of traditional joining and drift-pins, structural members are processed at a pre-cut factory. As a basic study to examine and increase the whole shear performance of portal frame, pin withdrawal test and moment resistance tests were conducted on each connection. The post and beam members with specified connectors showed good bearing performance in the wood members' joining system, column-base and beam-end. Moment rigidity was a bit better in a joint with higher slenderness ratio of drift-pin, but moment resistance performances, yield moment and maximum moment, were excellent in smaller one.

  • A traditional Korean housing is a typical type which is contained life style, spatial organization and scape element of people who lived in Korea. In the hanok, people want to be live not only in human environment and traditional culture, but also modem urban housing as a high density. This article deals as follows: First, Hanok as urban housing would be composed in a housing lot, linear type layout, devide building, and cluster type. Second, Housing unit and configuration of Multi family housing can be used single story, second story, second story + single story, multi story and Hanok roofing. Thirds, structure of the building are traditional wooden, combined one of steel and wood or concrete and wood, and the building system in exterior and interior can be seperated into another system. Forth, Image of multi story Hanok A last, consistency of Hanok is not a repeat of an origin but application and creative aptitude of the origin, and multi family housing application of Hanok can be a trial creative.

  • The purpose of this study is to look into the weight-lightening phenomenon of the roof structure of some Hanok(韓屋), the Korean traditional houses found from the survey on the distribution and actual state of urban traditional houses existing in the whole region of Jung-gu, Daegu, Korea. As a result of judging from the pre-test of building registers for the research area, approximately 5,000 wood structure houses were found. A field data survey based on these findings showed that there are 1,752 Hanok houses. And the further classification of the Korean traditional houses by roof structure type shows that about 35% of them underwent weight lightening. While this kind of light-weight Hanok is different from the concept of traditional Hanok, they also show the survival method of Hanok that reflects the economical and technological phases of that period. It is expected that deeper understanding on the urban traditional houses will be possible through carrying out in-depth researches on techniques of the light-weight roof structure of the urban traditional houses that are supposed to have functioned as dwellings as commercial products.

  • In the process of changing from modern society to contemporary society, innovation of various fields is considered as important with rapid social change and one of the consequences of this changing movement is the innovation of living space. In this paper, based on this motive, we will study a modular shelf that can create a private space, and serve function like role of partition that delimits space in the one-room. Modular shelves can provide openness, closeness, and autonomy to individual spaces in a one-room space without space divisions. In a small one-room for residential purpose, it is able to function effectively to show the atmosphere of personal space and display small items reflecting personal taste in addition to the function of storing books and items. In addition, a modular shelves considering disassembly and movement are proposed in order to take advantage of one-room that can make different space configurations as needed. It is aim to suggest a basic modular shelves structure that used traditional Chinese wood-joints during which techniques was sturdy while reducing the use of timber. Futhermore, the purpose of this study is to study the design of shelf furniture that can add individuality.
