Backgroud: Sleep deprivation (SD) impairs learning and memory by inhibiting hippocampal functioning at molecular and cellular levels. Abnormal autophagy and apoptosis are closely associated with neurodegeneration in the central nervous system. This study is aimed to explore the alleviative effect and the underlying molecular mechanism of stem-leaf saponins of Panax notoginseng (SLSP) on the abnormal neuronal autophagy and apoptosis in hippocampus of mice with impaired learning and memory induced by SD. Methods: Mouse spatial learning and memory were assessed by Morris water maze test. Neuronal morphological changes were observed by Nissl staining. Autophagosome formation was examined by transmission electron microscopy, immunofluorescent staining, acridine orange staining, and transient transfection of the tf-LC3 plasmid. Apoptotic event was analyzed by flow cytometry after PI/annexin V staining. The expression or activation of autophagy and apoptosis-related proteins were detected by Western blotting assay. Results: SLSP was shown to improve the spatial learning and memory of mice after SD for 48 h, accomanied with restrained excessive autophage and apoptosis, whereas enhanced activation of phosphoinositide 3-kinase/protein kinase B/mammalian target of rapamycin signaling pathway in hippocampal neurons. Meanwhile, it improved the aberrant autophagy and apoptosis induced by rapamycin and re-activated phosphoinositide 3-kinase/Akt/mammalian target of rapamycin signaling transduction in HT-22 cells, a hippocampal neuronal cell line. Conclusion: SLSP could alleviate cognitive impairment induced by SD, which was achieved probably through suppressing the abnormal autophagy and apoptosis of hippocampal neurons. The findings may contribute to the clinical application of SLSP in the prevention or therapy of neurological disorders associated with SD.
Science of prescriptions is an important part in the education of Korean Oriental Medicine. In spite of that, there is less agreement on measures for improving the education quality of science of prescriptions. Science of prescriptions can be classified into generalities and particulars. This study sought to present contents that must be incorporated into Introduction to Science of Prescriptions to enhance the quality of education by examining both teaching materials being used in colleges of traditional Chinese medicine and those of Korean oriental medicine and the Introduction part of books related with science of prescriptions. And when this study was carried out, training Korean oriental medicine practitioners and researchers and educators of science of prescriptions was taken into account. It is judged that Introduction to Science of Prescriptions needs to be divided into seven chapters and that each chapter requires containing opinions of ancient doctors and references to lay the basis of learning and revised and practical contents in addition to traditional ones. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the educational needs and knowledge level of traditional Korean nursing among nurses in Korean medicine hospitals. Methods: A survey design was used. A total of 180 nurses working for more than six months at 10 Korean medicine participated in this study. Data were collected in September of 2019. All data were analyzed by t-test, ANOVA, Scheffé, and paired t-test using SPSS Statistics 25.0 program. Results: The six sub-areas of educational needs for traditional Korean nursing were knowledge of treatments, direct nursing care, types of acupuncture, manipulative therapy, diagnosis, and herbal medicine in order. Average score of the educational needs for nurses in Korean medicine hospitals was 3.77 points out of 5 points. All six sub-areas of the knowledge level were statistically significant. Average score of knowledge level about Korean medicine among nurses was 3.03 out of 5. Conclusion: As a result of this study, it was found that a high level of knowledge is required or Korean medicine education. Knowledge of Korean medicine should be improved through education on thetypes of acupuncture, manipulative therapy, diagnosis, and treatment with relatively low scores. The results of this study can be used as basic data for preparing an educational system to improve the knowledge level of nurses in Korean medicine hospitals.

Objectives : This study conducted a survey on the needs of Korean medicine doctors for health care education programs specializing in traditional Korean medicine. Methods : The study selected Korean medicine doctors who had experience participating in outpatient consultations. Data collected through surveys underwent frequency analysis on performance, importance, difficulty, and educational needs using SPSS 24.0. Additionally, an Importance-Performance Analysis (IPA) was conducted using importance and performance data. Results : According to the results of the IPA analysis, in the area of "keep up the good work" there were activities such as fee Claims (A3), comprehensive assessment (B4), care plan development (B5), client and caregiver interviews (C8), chronic disease monitoring (C9), musculoskeletal and other pain management, musculoskeletal rehabilitation (C10), mental health management (C11), and fall prevention (C15). In the "concentrate here" priority action area, skin care including pressure sore management (C13) was identified. Conclusions : The traditional Korean medicine community care service is expected to expand further, so it is anticipated that the developed educational programs will contribute to the activation of traditional Korean medicine health care business.

Objectives : This report describes the diagnostic and therapeutic procedures of Collaborative Practice between Korean Traditional Medicine and Western Medicine for two dementia patients. Furthermore, through these cases, we suggest a model of collaborative practice between Korean traditional medicine and western medicine for the treatment of dementia. Methods : Two patients suffering from several symptoms related to dementia received collaborative practice between Korean traditional medicine and western medicine. Physicians of deparment which paient first visit interviewed patient and patient's guardians, discussed the symptoms and the status of the patient. Since then, the medical team made a differential diagnosis based on the results of brain imaging, hematology, urine test. and apprehended the status of dementia by the neuropsychological test. Korean traditional physicians examined the physical symptoms and identified the pattern of dementia in Korean traditional medicine. Following this, they decided on the method of acupuncture, moxibustion, cupping and herbal treatment. Western physicians decided on the type of medication after consideration of the patient's other medical conditions. Every intervention was decided by both Korean traditional physicians and western physicians after discussion. The medical team provided education on dementia and counseled the guardians. They also wrote the paper for using the long-term care insurance for the aged. Results : Two patients showed no improvement on the neuropsychologic and activity of daily living tests. However, the patients' subjective physical symptoms were improved. The collaborative practice between Korean traditional medicine and western medicine improved the patients' and guardians' satisfaction. Conclusions : Through these cases, we propose a model of collaborative practice between Korean traditional medicine and western medicine for dementia categorized diagnosis-test, treatment, prevention, management. More specifically, we supplement qigong and psychotherapy which was inadequate in these cases.

This paper investigates the attitudes of medical users toward Korean oriental medicine and traditional Chinese medicine and their future demand. The subjects are 404 university students both in Korea and in China. The items that were questioned in this paper were the attitudes toward Korean oriental medicine and traditional Chinese medicine, the experience of using the medicine, the reason they used the traditional medicine, the factors that made them satisfied with the medicine, and the future plan for using the traditional medicine. The reason the university students were selected as subjects was that they have more possibilities as future users of the traditional medicine. This paper show that Chinese students have more positive attitude toward the traditional medicine than Korean students. The Koreans' experience rate of using the traditional medicine was comparatively high and the subjects in both the countries used the western medicine for the symptoms of a cold and dental problems. For the illness of stomach, Korean and Chinese subjects used the traditional medicine and the western medicine half and half. This paper presented the subjects with the common 14 diseases that they can have and asked which medicine they will use when they have the diseases. The results of analysis indicate that the subjects tend to use different medical institution according to the diseases. The subjects in Korea and China selected different medical institution for the same disease. From the analysis of the questionnaire, it can be seen that there are some differences between Koreans and Chinese in using the medical institution, which results from the difference in medical culture and the relationship between the traditional medicine and medical users could be figured out.

There has been a need for an operational curriculum for teaching Chinese characters used by traditional Korean medicine (TKM), but the it was not thoroughly reviewed so far. We analysed the frequency of unicode Chinese characters with five textbooks of traditional Korean medicine used as a national standard. We found that 氣, 經, 陽, 陰, 不, 熱, 血, 脈, 病, 證, 寒, 中, 心, 痛, 虛, 大, 生, 治, 本, 之 are the 20 most frequently used Chinese characters, and also showed 100 frequently used characters for each textbook. We used a cumulative frequency analysis method to suggest a list of 1,000 prerequisite Chinese characters for the TKM education (TKM 1000). which represents the current usage of Chinese characters in TKM and covers 99% of all textbook use if combined with MEST 1800. This study showed prerequisite and essential Chinese characters for the implementation of evidence-based teaching in TKM. The TKM 1000, a prerequisite characters by this study based on the TKM textbooks can be used for the development of Korean Medicine Education Eligibility Test (KEET), entrance exam to the Colleges of Oriental Medicine or textbooks, and educational curriculum for premed students.
Objective: This study was performed to compare knowledge of and expectations for traditional medicine between Korean, Chinese and Taiwanese, to figure out whether these factors influence the intention to use traditional medical treatment in the future. Methods: One-hundred ninety-nine Korean, eighty-five Chinese, and one-hundred seventy-four Taiwanese subjects responded to the survey. A one-way ANOVA was performed to compare experiences of traditional medical treatment, knowledge of both traditional medicine and western medicine, expectations for traditional medicine, and future intention to use traditional medical treatment. Multiple regression analyses were also performed to evaluate a possible correlation between the other factors and the intention to use traditional medical treatment in the future. Results: The experiences of traditional medical treatment were in the order of Taiwanese, Korean, and Chinese, from more frequent to less frequent. Chinese had more knowledge of traditional medicine compared to Taiwanese and Koreans, and the expectations for traditional medicine were in the order of Chinese, Korean and Taiwanese, from higher to lower. The intentions to use traditional medical treatment in the future were in the order of Korean, Chinese and Taiwanese, from more to less. Multiple regression analyses showed that experiences of traditional medical treatment, knowledge of traditional medicine, and expectations for traditional medicine were associated with the intention to use traditional medicine in the future in Korean and Taiwanese, but not in Chinese. Only the expectations for traditional medicine were associated with the future intentions to use traditional medical treatment in Chinese. Conclusions: These findings suggest that Korean and Taiwanese may need to improve their knowledge of traditional medicine whereas Chinese need to link their knowledge of traditional medicine with the intention to use it in the future. Understanding the characteristics of traditional medicine would probably contribute to enhancing the intentions to use it more.
