Through investigating the development process of De Stijl painters and Rietveld's early works and analyzing the composition and disposition type of elements such as point, line, plane, color in the selected works, we can draw some conclusions. First, Rietveld pursues the dissolution of traditional volume and the de-composition of elements as Mondrian does through crossing-connection of three listels with quadrangular section. Second, Rietveld reorganized de-composition elements with detached lines and color planes. Third, Rietveld experimented possibility of new plastic space through displacing elements, opening space, making anti-gravity space.

  • Based on the experience of building 'Waegwan(倭館)' in Busan, Japanese paper wallpapering, the use of square rafters, and the installation of sliding windows were used in the construction of Joseon palaces from the 17th century onwards. Elements that could be applied through observation alone were applied first, and sliding windows that required precise skill acquisition were installed later. 'Yeongchang(影窓)', which refers to a sliding window that brightens an interior, has spread rapidly, and its types and structures have also become more diverse. Gradually, 'Yeongchang' came to refer only to additional windows installed by attaching grooves to the lintel of existing casement windows. The sliding window that is installed independently and acts as an interior partition was renamed 'Chujangja(推障子)'. Japanese architectural elements such as 'Yeongchang' and 'Chujangja' have become an element of traditional Korean architecture.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the present status of dwelling spaces and deduct sustainable elements in transformation of them by comparing the restored drawings with the surveyed drawings focused on traditional houses that exist in the urban area of cheongju city in Korea. In alteration and extension of these traditional houses, scale of a private room became larger as it has been connected and expanded, the exterior main hall (Daecheong) became the interior living room, and the conventional kitchen was westernized and changed from K type to DK or LDK type. The toilet located at outside was installed by the attached aisle (Toetgan) inside and the existing room. The extension was completed with equipments, storage space, and rental accommodation. The conservative and sustainable elements in the various transformation of them are as follows. Firstly, it was to maintain 3 rooms such as main room (anbang)-main hall (daecheong)-detached room (gunnunbang). Secondly, it was to sustain the circulation of kitchen and arrangement of the - type worktable even though it was westernized. Thirdly, extension of storage space was completed less than 600 mm within the eaves. Although there were functionally and structurally many changes in 18 houses, 4 houses had maintained wooden floor of main hall, 5 houses long planked wooden floor of the attached aisle, and 12 houses rafter ceiling of the main hall and the attached aisle.

The process of this study is illustrated as follows: At first, this research contains basic concepts and theories of Structuralism and discusses the possibilities of typological approaches in Korean traditional space interpretation. Secondly, As typological structure of traditional space, spacial and visual expressive characteristics in traditional residential space based on traditional thoughts of Koreans formed with inherent consciousness are considered with Hjelmslev's Structuralism and Wonhyo's Whajaeng theory. Finally, This study tries conceptual analysis based on Lacan's Metaphor and Metonymy emerged from unconscious mechanisms about interpretation and induction of the traditional spacial structure for contemporary Application. Structure is a group of elements forming a covariant ensemble. From this point of view, this study validates that texts are understood when methods that bring back to the creative processes and intentions are found by Text Hermeneutics.

  • The purpose of this study is to find out the expression style of space in Rietveld's early works in comparison with Mondrian's paintings. Through investigating the development of their works and analyzing the composition and disposition type of elements such as point, line, plane, color in the selected works, we can draw the following conclusions. .First, Rietveld pursues the dissolution of traditional volume and the de-composition of elements as Mondrian does. Second, the painterly property of plane is emphasized by the projection of separately floating elements on the picture plane. Third, the separating the layer of lines from the layer of planes and the re-combination of these two layers present the superimpositional image of three-dimensional objects. This leads into new conception of architectural space and develops the transparency and the extension of plan in modem architecture.
