A Teaching Method of Geography about the Ability Grouping and Strategy by WBI (웹 활용을 통한 지리과 수준별 과제해결학습의 수업방안)

  • The present education situations are rapidly changing to adapt to 'the Knowledge & Information-based Society'. Especially, the implementation of 'the 7th National Curriculum' put strong emphasis on the learner-centered education that refers to the ability grouping. Therefore, it is necessary that the change from a traditional teaching method to a learner-centered one in geography education will take place. This study will present a design of geography ability grouping through the Task-Solving Learning. This ability grouping method is suitable for the large class. And this study also presents a strategy by applying WBI, which make use of the advantage of computer and constructivism. This WBI model can be applied properly to many teaching-learning methods that includes Self-Directed Learning, Collaborate Learning, Ability Grouping, and Applying ICT Instruction. Actually they are demanded in the current education. A geography-classroom will have an accessible internet program as a precondition for this instruction.

Effects of Communication Oriented Mathematics Lessons on Mathematical Disposition and Academic Achievements (의사소통 중심 수학 수업이 수학적 성향과 학업성취도에 미치는 영향)

  • This study has investigated the way to improve the communication skills emphasized in mathematics education, and analyzed the effects of Communication Oriented Mathematics Lessons on the mathematical disposition and the academic achievements. For this research, two groups of first grade students from D elementary school in Daegu city were selected which had been proved homogeneous in mathematical disposition and academic achievements via a preliminary test. The experimental group was given Communication Oriented Mathematics Lessons (COML) while the control group was given Traditional Classroom-based Instruction (TCI). COML were given along with first grade, first level mathematics for eight weeks, to improve communication skills of the students who were unfamiliar with mathematical communications. The schemes for the education include revising, summarizing, asking questions, and participating. The results of the study were summarized for mathematical disposition and academic achievements. First, COML is effective to evaluate the will to solve problems in the mathematical disposition of the students, and to make it useful for them to live their lives and to learn other subjects. Second, previous studies have shown contrary interpretations on the effects of COML. This study has found that it does not improve the students' scores on the original form of academic achievement test.

Exploring American Indian Students' Problem-Solving Propensity in the Context of Culturally Relevant STEM Topics (문화 반영적 융합교육(STEM) 주제 상황에서 미국 토착민 학생들의 문제 해결 성향에 대한 탐색)

  • This study presents an out-of-school problem-solving lesson we designed for American Indian students using a culturally relevant STEM topic. The lesson was titled "Shelter Design for Severe Weather Conditions." This shelter design lesson was developed based on an engineering design allowing us to integrate STEM topics within a traditional indigenous house-building context. This problem context was used to encourage students to apply their prior knowledge, experience, and community/cultural practice to solve problems. We implemented the lesson at a summer program on an American Indian reservation. Using the lesson, this study explores how American Indian students use cultural knowledge and experience to solve a STEM problem. We collected student data through pre- and post-STEM content knowledge tests, drawings and explanations of shelter models on the students' group worksheets, and classroom observations. We used interpretive and inductive methods to analyze the data. This study demonstrates that our culturally relevant, STEM problem-solving lesson helped the American Indian students solve a complex, real-world problem. This study examines how students' prior experiences and cultural knowledge affect their problem-solving strategies. Our findings have implications for further research on designing problem-solving lessons with culturally relevant STEM topics for students from historically marginalized populations.

Role of Headmasters, Teachers, and Supervisors in Knowledge Transfer about Occupational Health and Safety to Pupils in Vocational Education

  • Background: Young people are at an increased risk for illness in working life. The authorities stipulate certain goals for training in occupational health and safety (OHS) in vocational schools. A previous study concluded that pupils in vocational education had limited knowledge in the prevention of health risks at work. The aim of the current study, therefore, was to study how OHS training is organized in school and in workplace-based learning (WPL). Methods: The study design featured a qualitative approach, which included interviews with 12 headmasters, 20 teachers, and 20 supervisors at companies in which the pupils had their WPL. The study was conducted at 10 upper secondary schools, located in Central Sweden, that were graduating pupils in four vocational programs. Results: The interviews with headmasters, teachers, and supervisors indicate a staggered picture of how pupils are prepared for safe work. The headmasters generally give teachers the responsibility for how goals should be reached. Teaching is very much based on risk factors that are present in the workshops and on teachers' own experiences and knowledge. The teaching during WPL also lacks the systematic training in OHS as well as in the traditional classroom environment. Conclusion: Teachers and supervisors did not plan the training in OHS in accordance with the provisions of systematic work environment management. Instead, the teachers based the training on their own experiences. Most of the supervisors did not receive information from the schools as to what should be included when introducing OHS issues in WPL.

The Effects of Focus-on-Form Instruction on L2 Learners' Grammatical Achievement: Focusing on the Deductive and Inductive FFI (형태 초점 교수법이 제2 언어학습자의 문법 성취도에 미치는 영향: 연역적 방법과 귀납적 방법을 중심으로)

  • This study aims to explore the effects of deductive FFI and inductive FFI in L2 learners' grammatical achievement and their reaction to the grammar instruction. 84 students were placed into three groups: 29 given deductive FFI(DG), 28 receiving inductive FFI(IG), and 27 with traditional instruction(CG). All students completed pre/post tests and questionnaires, and took a delayed post test 9 weeks after the treatment. For statistical anlayses of all the quantitative data, a one-way ANOVA, paired samples T-test, and repeated measures ANOVA were performed. The results indicated that both deductive and inductive FFI affected learners' grammatical achievement and their achievement was sustained over time. Deductive FFI was more effective than inductive FFI, whereas the IG students more positively changed their attitudes and perceptions to the grammar instruction. These findings of the study imply that FFI should be valued in an Korean EFL classroom, which would contribute to further longitudinal research for its sustainability.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze and compare the effectiveness of elementary in e-Learning video lessons. In an elementary school where the educational videos are frequently used, the learning about video materials is important but it is difficult to judge all students by a teacher in a classroom. In order to solve the problems of the field, In the fifth-grade elementary school social studies class, learning using video material was conducted by using the online learning judgment system for the experimental group, and learning using video material was conducted by the traditional method for the controlled group. As a result of the experiment, the class using the online learning judgment system was effective in enhancing the learner 's academic achievement. It also positively influenced learners' learning satisfaction. Teachers' satisfaction was not statistically significant because of the small number of teachers. However, The mean value of the teachers' satisfaction in the experimental group was high and the deviation was small.

  • The purpose of this study is to establish Smart Education Environment for children's personalized learning based on the data are accumulated by Smart Device which is one of element on Smart Education. In this study, we propose the operational improvement plan for the free choice activity in the 5-year-old kindergarten and also implement the Free Choice Activity(FCA) management system for children to select and to evaluate the play plans for themselves. Children participating in this study have fun the whole time for the process of self-planning, the playing activities and the self-assessment of playing. As a result, it is confirmed that children participate actively in decision-making of interesting areas through the smart device than the traditional education environment before. A single teacher using FCA management system with smart device in this study can get useful information without difficulty of individual child's interests, learning and the statistics of children in the classroom.

  • Nowadays, the knowledge of modern society through education has become more and more complicated. The education system and the educational philosophy have created various education systems and methods for each country due to the difference of history and culture. In Korea, there are various teaching methods in recent years. However, if the traditional teaching method in Korea is based on educating teachers with a good understanding of the contents taught, some foreign countries such as USA and Germany can express their thoughts of the total population. In this situation, this study researches cases of other countries that have different educational systems from ours. It compares the differences of social background, educational program, and educational space in Germany, Singapore and the United States. As a result of this study, the following contents can be derived. The educational program is based on the social background of each country and plans an educational space suitable for the education program. In Germany, the emphasis is on the students' experience and community consciousness rather than on the amount of knowledge, so a home base space is planned between the classrooms to solve the problem of lack of solidarity and belonging among the students who are lacking in the curriculum. Some practical courses are run in the community. In Singapore, educational programs are elite-oriented compared to the other country, and because of the typical tropical climate, educational facilities are characterized by a lot of common space in semi-exterior space. Many schools in the United States have IMC in the central part of their schools that adopt self-directed learning and discussion.

Digital Transformation of Education Brought by COVID-19 Pandemic

  • In this paper, the author found and analyzed the problems caused by the change of traditional teaching methods to online in classrooms and laboratories. Looking at the analysis of major problems, first, there were various technical problems, including not all environments and facilities being connected to the Internet. Second, the effectiveness of virtual classes, which were suddenly switched online, could also be questioned. Finally, in the face of a new environment, the stress of teachers to adapt rapidly to the new teaching methodology was a problem. The author proposed digital transformation as a way to address these problems. The author analyzed educational changes, learning modalities and various technical tools, and various tasks to enable digital transformation. First, the author investigated, analyzed, and presented the factors necessary to efficiently operate the classroom environment that will change to online. Next, the author analyzed the factors and problems needed to make the students' classes reliable and efficient, and proposed solutions. Finally, the author pointed out the problem that during online lectures, the responsibility of learning is excessively transferred from teachers to students, and proposed a solution to this problem. Subsequently, the author proposed future studies.

Effects of Blended Learning on Abilities to Use Smart-Phone and Applications among Students with Intellectual Disabilities (블랜디드 러닝이 지적장애 학생의 스마트 폰과 애플리케이션 사용 능력에 미치는 효과)

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze effects of blended learning on abilities to use smart-phone and applications among students with intellectual disabilities. To do this, 30 students with intellectual disabilities who were enrolled in special school and special classroom in Jellanam-do and Gwanju metropolitan city were selected for this study, and were placed experimental and control groups of 15 students. The experimental group was provided with blended learning in which direct instruction, anchored instruction, experience activities, and community-based instruction were combined, and the control group was provided with traditional teacher-centered lecture style intervention. Pre-, post-, and maintenance evaluations were conducted two weeks after intervention. The collected data was analyzed the repeated two-way ANOVA. In the result of study, the experimental group improved on abilities to use smart-phone and applications than control group. Blended learning is a teaching method that can be a usefully used when educating how to use smart-phone and applications to students with intellectual disabilities.
