The development of railway roadbed for 600km/h train speed level is very difficult because unpredictable static and dynamic interaction occurs between the ultra-high speed train and the infrastructure. Especially, an earthwork-bridge transition zone is a section in which influential factors react, such as bearing capacity, compression, settlement, drainage, and track irregularity; these interactions can include complicated dynamic interaction. Therefore, if static and dynamic stability are secured in transition zones, it is possible to develop roadbeds for ultra-high speed railways. In the present paper, design parameters for transition reinforcement applied to present railway design criteria are analytically examined for ultra-high speed usage on a preferential basis. Design parameters are the presence of reinforcing materials, geometric shape, stiffness of materials, and so on. Analysis is focused on the deformation response of the track and running stability at ultra-high speed.

One of the basic assumptions in the static gait design for a walking robot is that the weight of leg should be negligible compared to that of body, so that the total gravity center is not affected by swing of a leg. Based on the ideal assumption of zero leg-weight, conventional static gait has been simply designed for the gravity center of body to be inside the support polygon, consisting of each support leg's tip position. In case that the weight of leg is relatively heavy, however, while the gravity center of body is kept inside the support polygon, the total gravity center of walking robot can be out of the polygon due to weight of a swinging leg, which causes instability in walking. Thus, it is necessary in the static gait design of a real robot a compensation scheme for the fluctuation in the gravity center. In this paper, a body impedance control is proposed to obtain the total gravity center based on foot forces measured from load cells of a real walking robot and to adjust its position to track the pre-designed trajectory of the corresponding ideal robot's body center. Therefore, the walking stability is secured even in case that the weight of leg has serious influence on the total gravity center of robot.
Resilient pads play a major role in reducing the impact of loads on a rail in a rail-fastening system, which is essentially used for a concrete track. Although a compression set test is commonly used to measure the durability of a resilient pad, the static spring constant is often observed to be different from the fatigue test. In this study, a modified compression set test method was proposed to monitor the variations in the compression set and static spring constant of a resilient pad with respect to temperature and time. In addition, the life of the resilient pad was predicted by performing an acceleration test based on the Arrhenius equation.
In this study, the climatological characteristics of the landfall typhoons on North Korea are surveyed to estimate the frequency, the intensity, the track, and their damage. The data for the period of 1951-2008 are used from both RSMC (Regional Specialized Meteorological Center) Tokyo Typhoon Center and NCEP/NCAR (National Centers for Environmental Prediction/National Center for Atmospheric Research), EM-DAT (Emergency Events Database). There are the ten highest frequencies from 1961 to 1965 and is one frequency for the period of both 1966-1979 and 1976-1980 respectively. Even if a clear trend on the frequency of typhoon is not defined, it is noticeable the intensity has been weak since the frequency of TS (Tropical Storm) decreased. In order to figure out both the characteristic of intensity and the relation between the typhoon track and the expansion of North Pacific High (NPH), Typhoon's tracks are classified into three types as follows: (I) landing on the west coast of North Korea through the mainland of China, (II) landing on the west coast of North Korea, (III) landing on a central/eastern part of the Korean peninsula through South Korea. More often than not, the characteristic of Type (I) is the case of a landfall after it becomes extratropical cyclone. Type(II) and Type(III) show a landfall as TS grade, by comparision. On the relation between the typhoon's track and the expansion of NPH analyzed, Type (I) shows the westward expansion while both Type (II) and Type (III) show the northward expansion and development of NPH. This means the intensity of a typhoon landfall on North Korea is variable depending on the development of NPH. Finally, only two cases are found among total five cases in EM-DAT, reportedly that North Korea was damaged. And therefore, the damage by the wind of Prapiroon (the $12^{th}$ typhoon, 2000) and heavy rainfall with Rusa (the $15^{th}$ typhoon, 2002) landing on North Korea was analyzed. Moreover, it is estimated both Prapiroon and Rusa have done badly damaged to North Korea as the economical losses of as much as six billion and five hundred-thousand US dollar, respectively.
The recent unusual climate and extreme weather events have frequently given unexpected disaster and damages, facing difficulties in the management of water resources. In particular, climate change could result in intensified typhoons, and this would be the worst case scenario that can happen. The primary objective of this study is to identify the patterns of typhoon-induced precipitation and the associated synoptic pattern. This study focused on analyzing precipitation patterns over the South Korea using historic records as opposed to a specified season or duration, and further investigates the potential connection with heavy rainfall to synoptic patterns. In this study, we used the best track data provided by the Regional Specialized Meteorological Center of Japan for 40 years from 1973 to 2012. The patterns of the typhoon-induced precipitation were categorized into four groups according to a given typhoon track information, and then the associated synoptic climatology patterns were further investigated. The results demonstrate that the typhoon-induced precipitation patterns could be grouped and potentially simulated according to the identified synoptic patterns. Our future work will focus on developing a short-term forecasting model of typhoon-induced precipitation considering the identified climate patterns as inputs.
Global warming and rapid climate change have long affected the characteristics of typhoons in the Northwest Pacific, which has induced increasing devastating disasters along the coastal regions of the Korean peninsula. Synthetic Aperature Radar (SAR), as one of the microwave sensors, makes it possible to produce high-resolution sea surface wind field around the typhoon under cloudy atmospheric conditions, which has been impossible to obtain the winds from satellite optical and infrared sensors. The Geophysical Model Functions (GMFs) for sea surface wind retrieval from SAR data requires the input of wind direction, which should be based on the accurate estimation of the center of the typhoon. This study estimated the typhoon centers using Sentinel-1A images to improve the problem of typhoon center detection method and to reflect it in retrieving the sea surface wind. The results were validated by comparing with the typhoon best track data provided by the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) and Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), and also by using infrared images of Himawari-8 satellite. The initial center position of the typhoon was determined by using VH polarization, thereby reducing the possibility of error. The detected center showed a difference of 23.76 km on average with the best track data of the four typhoons provided by the KMA and JMA. Compared to the typhoon center estimated by Himawari-8 satellite, the results showed an average spatial variation of 11.80 km except one typhoon located near land with a large difference of 58.73 km. This result suggests that high-resolution SAR images can be used to estimate the center and retrieve sea surface wind around typhoons.

In order to detect the exact position of high-speed train, it is necessary to obtain location information from the transponder tag installed along the track. When the transponder tag receives the energizing signal from the train, it sends a telegram to the reader, which includes location information. In high-speed railway environment, this telegram can be corrupted by electromagnetic interference caused by onboard electric train power equipments or wayside devices. In order to assess the performance of transponder system under this harsh environment, we carried out field test using HEMU-430X. Field test results are briefly introduced and discussed for the evaluation of the transponder system under development.
Vibration generated by the non-uniform road profile propagates though each tire and the suspension and finally generates structure born noise in the interior of the passenger vehicle. In this paper, the road-booming-noise which has strong correlation with the vibration signals measured at the suspension system was compensated. Active noise control of the road-booming-noise is rather difficult to achieve because of its non-stationary characteristics. CMFX LMS (Constraint Multiple Filtered-X Least Mean Square) algorithm, which can track non-stationary process rather well, is applied. Comprison of the proposed method and the conventional MFX LMS (Multiple Filtered-X Least Mean Square) algorithm is made through the hardware-in-the-loop simulation and the feasibility of the proposed method is demonstrated with the experiment.

Photometric reverberation mapping is an effective alternative to time consuming spectroscopy. It usually employs narrow bands to track the luminosity variations of broad emission lines, such as Balmer lines, and broadbands for the continuum variability. Here, we investigate the feasibility of substituting these for medium bands, with 50nm widths, that are currently being used on the SED Camera for QUasars in EArly uNiverse (SQUEAN) installed on the 2.1m Otto Struve Telescope at McDonald Observatory. Three targets with recent variability and/or short expected time lags were selected, and observed for 15 minutes each in the medium band containing $H{\alpha}$, and the two adjacent bands for continuum subtraction afterwards. Analysis shows that for one of the objects, SDSS J0350+0037, the pure $H{\alpha}$ emission line flux has a S/N ~ 12, so that variabilities up to ~ 8% are detectable. Thus, future observations using these medium bands on SQUEAN seem to be practical.
