  • The sorption and desorption properties of U(VI), Th(IV), Zr(IV), Cu(II), Pb(II), Ni(II), Zn(II), Cd(II) and Mn(II) ions on XAD-16-[4-(2-thiazolylazo)orcinol] (TAO) chelating resin were studied by elution method. The effect was examined with respect to overall capacity of each metal ion, separation of mixed metal ions, flow rate and concentration of buffer solution for optimum condition of sorption. The overall capacities of some metal ions on this chelating resin were 0.35nmol U(VI)/g resin, 0.49nmol Th(IV)/g resin, 0.41nmol Cu(II)/g resin, and 0.31nmol Zr(IV)/g resin, respectively. The elution order of metal ions obtained from breakthrough capacity and overall capacity at pH 5.0 was Th(IV)>Cu(II)>U(VI)>Zr(IV)>Pb(II)>Ni(II)>Zn(II)>Mn(II)>Cd(II). The group separation of mixed metal ions was possible by increasing pH in pH range 2~5 at a flow rate of 0.28mL/min. Characteristics of desorption were investigated with desorption agents such as $HNO_3$, HCl, $HClO_4$, $H_2SO_4$, and $Na_2CO_3$. It was found that 2M $HNO_3$ showed high desorption efficiency to most of metal ions except Zr(IV) ion. Also, desorption and recovery of Zr(IV) ion were successfully performed with 1M $H_2SO_4$. Recovery of trace amount of U(VI) ion from artificial sea water was over 94%. The chelating resin, XAD-16-TAO was successfully applied to group separation of rare earth metal ions from U(VI) by using 2M $HNO_3$ as an eluent.

  • 5-methylthioninhydrin (5-MTN) is an amino acid sensitive reagent used for the development of latent fingermarks deposited on porous surfaces such as paper and wood. The present study demonstrates that the 5-MTN can be used as a latent footwear impression enhancement reagent, by reacting with trace multivalent metal ions, which are the main components of the latent footwear impression. 5-MTN and L-alanine complex (MTN-ALA) used for the latent footwear impression development was prepared, by mixing $4.5{\times}10^{-3}M$ 5-MTN (in methanol) and $4.5{\times}10^{-3}M$ L-alanine (in methanol) in 1:1 ratio, and keeping undisturbed at room temperature for 24 h. The latent footwear impressions were deposited on white and black non-porous surfaces (glass plate, polyethylene panel, polypropylene panel, acryl panel, polyvinyl chloride (PVC) panel, poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) panel, acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) panel, tile), and a semi-porous surfaces (painted wood). The latent footwear impressions on these surfaces were treated with MTN-ALA complex by spraying. The fluorescence of footwear impressions (occurred due to the reaction between MTN-ALA and metal complexes) was observed under a 505 nm forensic light source and an orange barrier filter. The enhancement of latent footwear impression was achieved from black surfaces without any blurring. However, the fluorescence (enhancement) of footwear impression was not observed on the white PVC, PMMA, and ABS surfaces, because the incident light interfered and reflected on the surface. The sensitivity of MTN-ALA was superior to 2,2'-dipyridil, which is a representative non-fluorescing footwear impression enhancement reagent, and similar to 8-hydroxyquinoline, which is a representative fluorescing footwear impression enhancement reagent.

  • Pure Titanium and alloy have been widely used in dental implants and orthopedics due to their excellent mechanical properties, biocompatibility and corrosion resistance. However, due to the biologically inactive nature of Ti metal implants, it cannot bind to the living bone immediately after transplantation into the body. In order to improve the bone bonding ability of titanium implants, many attempts have been made to alter the structure, composition and chemical properties of titanium surfaces, including the deposition of bioactive coatings. The PEO method has the advantages of short experiment time and low cost. These advantages have attracted attention recently. Recently, many metal ions such as silicon, magnesium, zinc, strontium, and manganese have received attention in this field due to their impact on bone regeneration. Silicon (Si) in particular has been found to be essential for normal bone and cartilage growth and development. Zinc (Zn) plays very important roles in bone formation and immune system regulation and promotes bone metabolism and growth. Manganese (Mn) is an essential trace metal found in all tissues and is required for normal amino acid, lipid, protein and carbohydrate metabolism. The objective of this work was research on the corrosion behavior of Si, Zn and Mn-doped hydroxyapatite on the PEO-treated surface. Anodized alloys was prepared at 270V~300V voltage in the solution containig Zn, Si, and Mn ions. Ion release test was carried out using potentidynamic and AC impedance method in 0.9% NaCl solution. The surface characteristics of PEO treated Ti-6Al-4V alloy were investigated using XRD, FE-SEM, AFM and EDS.

  • Determination of trace rhodium, based on catalytic reduction of protons by the adsorbed Rhformaldehyde complexes formed in formaldehyde-hydrochloric acid medium, was demonstrated. The condition for the measurements of Rh at trace levels was 0.004%(w/v) formaldehyde-0.75M hydrochloric acid. In this medium detection limit was $7.0{\times}10^{-12}M$ and the linear dynamic range was $1.0{\times}10^{-11}{\sim}1.0{\times}10^{-8}M$ Rh. There were no interferences from other platinum group metal ions even in the presence of a 500-fold excess.

  • An enrichment/separation system for atomic absorption spectrometric determinations of Cu(Ⅱ), Fe(Ⅲ), Ni(Ⅱ) and Co(Ⅱ) has been established. The procedure is based on the adsorption of the analytes as calmagite chelates on Chromosorb-102. The effects of some parameters including pH, amount of ligand, salt matrix, flow rates of sample and eluent solutions were investigated. Under optimized conditions, the relative standard deviation of the combined method of sample treatment, preconcentration and determination with FAAS (N=5) is generally lower than 5%. The limit of detection (3σ) was between 6.0-112.9 ㎍/L. The results were used for preconcentration of analytes from some sodium and ammonium salt.

  • The manuscript reports synthesis of exceptionally stable gold nanoparticles (GNPs) using Momordica charantia fruit extract. The synthesis approach was optimized by refining three experimental variables including source of the fruit extract (peel, seed, and seed coat), pH of the solution, and temperature of the reaction medium. As synthesized GNPs showed excellent stability against various thiolated compounds (e.g., thioglycolic acid, thiourea, ${\text\tiny{L}}-cystine$, 1-dodecanethiol, and cysteamine hydrochloride). Moreover, these nanoparticles showed distinctive colorimetric responses against $Cd^{2+}$ and thiophenol (TP) from their potential interferences. The limit of detection (LOD) values for $Cd^{2+}$ and TP were determined as 0.186 and $0.154{\mu}M$, respectively.

  • The present paper describes a procedure for separation, preconcentration and determination of trace amount of copper in natural water samples by using 2-mercaptobenzimidazol as the complexing agent. The proposed method is based on the surfactant aggregation formed on γ-alumina by mixing sodium dodecyl sulfate and γ-alumina in water; 2-mercaptobenzimidazol was incorporated into inner hydrophobic part of produced ad-micelles in acidic media to produce an assemble suitable for preconcentration and determination of copper ion. Optimum experimental conditions for adsorption of μg/ml levels of copper ions from aqueous solution by the adsorbent have been reported. The copper ions were quantitively adsorbed by the sorbent over the pH range of 7.1-8.0 and were quantitatively desorbed afterward by using sulfosalycilic acid as the eluent. The determination of copper was not interfered in the presence of common metal ions. The procedure was applied for analysis of river water sample. Relative standard deviation was found to be 4.91%.

  • See-through hollow cathode glow discharge cell has been developed for the trace analysis of metal ions. The systems consists of new glow discharge cell improved the cooling system. In the case of previous type of hollow cathode glow discharge cell, it had been utilized for the trace analysis of metal ions but it had a problem that the plasma becomes unstable by air-cooled device. In this study, the modified hollow cathode glow discharge cell has been developed in order to minimize the problem associated with the air-cooled device. thus the stability of the plasma with water-cooling device has been improved and also the higher plasma temperature has been measured. The fundamental characteristics of modified systems have been investigated. And the discharge parameters, such as discharge pressure, material, and diameter of cathode, have been studied to find optimum discharge conditions.
