  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the chemical bond strength of successively recast Pd-Ag ceramic alloys with porcelain and to investigate changes of quantity of trace elements at the metal-porcelain interface. Porcelain was fired as usual manner on the each successively recast specimen. Rectangular planar shear test was performed and bond strength was measured by Instron universal testing machine. Diffusion of trace elements at the each interface was observed by ESCA (Electron Spectroscopy for Chemical Analysis). The obtained results were as follows : 1. Chemical bond strength was significantly decreased after second recasting. But in case of first recasting, there was no significant decrease of bond strength statistically (p<0.05). 2. Bond strength was not significantly decreased in each generation, when fifty percents new alloy was added (p<0.05). 3. Ag, Sn and In were observed at the porcelain interface. But Pd was not observed. 4. The quantity of Ag, In ions were progressively increased at the metal-porcelain interface as the casting was repeated. Silver ion was most significantly increased.

  • Ultra trace metal impurities of high-purity sulfuric acid for semiconductor process have been determined in the concentration of lower than ppb (ng/g) level using high resolution inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (HR-ICP-MS).The acid samples were evaporated and concentrated by the factor of 20. No clement in the acids exceeded 1ppb level and most of the clements were determined below 10ppt (pg/g). Elements without spectral interference in mass spectrum, such as In, V, Mn, etc, were determined in the concentration of below 1 ppt level The recoveries in the range of 72% to 127.2% for 0.5 ppb spiked sample were obtained.

  • In order to investigate the amounts of trace elements flowing into reservoir, and to elucidate the relationship between trace element mobility and fraction size, the stream water and sediment samples were collected from thirty-two sites of the 3rd or 4th order stream within watershed surrounding the Juam reservoir. Chemical analyses of trace elements (As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn) for all samples were completed, and additionally cationi and anion for stream water samples. Considering the distribution of rocks and contamination sources in watershed, the eight stream sediments were selected from typical sites representing study areas, and we determined the concentrations of trace elements according to size fractions ($2\;mm{\sim}200\;{\mu}m$, $200{\sim}100\;{\mu}m$, $100{\sim}50\;{\mu}m$, $50{\sim}20\;{\mu}m$ and < $20\;{\mu}m$). The correlation relationships between concentrations and size fractions of stream sediments were important to identify the hydro-geochemical behavior of trace elements that flow into Juam reservoir. Stream waters showed four water types (Ca-Mg-$HCO_3$, Ca-Na-$HCO_3$-Cl, Ca-Na-$HCO_3-SO_4$, Ca-Na-$HCO_3$) depending on pollution sources such as coal mine, metal mine, farm-land and dwellings. Concentrations of trace elements increased clearly with the decrease in size fractions of stream sediments. Concentrations of Cu, Pb and Zn increased dramatically in silt size (< $20\;{\mu}m$) fraction, while As had high concentrations in sand size ($2\;mm{\sim}100\;{\mu}m$) fraction in downstream sediments of metal mines. These indicate that Cu, Zn, and Pb moved into Juam reservoir easily in the adsorbed form on silt size grain in sediments, and As was transported as As-bearing mineral facies, resulting in its less chance to reach into Juam reservoir.

  • Trace elements are important components in the biological system, as a structural material and metabolic controller. Neutron activation analysis (NAA) with high neutron flux and high energy resolution Ge (Li) detector coupled to multichannel analyzer (MCA) has been one of the most accurate method for the determination of ultra-trace level components, and is applicable to biological material. In human body, the NAA can be used for quantitation of trace elements in various organs and tissue with endocrinological and metabolic disease and industrial metal poisoning. In this study, Triga Mark III nuclear reactor in Korea Atomic Research Institute was used for quantitation of trace eleement in human lung cancer tissues by neutron activation analysis. In the squamous cell carcinoma tissues, Br, Hg, La, Sb, Sc, Cl, Fe and I content were lower than normal lung tissues, and K, Rb and Se content were higher. In the adenocarcinoma tissues, Fe, Au, La, Sc and Zn content were lower than normal lung tissues, and Rb, Co and Se content were higher. Rb content was higher in the adenocarcinoma tissues than in the squamous cell carcinoma tissues. Fe and Na content were higher in the squamous cell carcinoma tissues than in the adenocarcinoma tissues.

  • Determination of trace elements in a sample including complicated matrix is very difficult due to the interference by the matrix. Therefore, if the trace elements can be separated from the complex sample matrix and determined, the interference effects can be reduced, and it is very helpful for the overall analysis. In this study, the analytes of trace elements were separated from the sample matrix by co-precipitation with trace elements using indium hydroxide ($In(OH)_3$), then detected by inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometer (ICP-AES). Above all, the optimal conditions for the co-precipitation of elements with indium hydroxide were experimentally established. At last, salt was analyzed by the developed analytical method. No heavy metals were not found in Shinan Jeungdo salt, but trace amounts of several heavy metals except for cadmium were found in Cheonnam Yongkwang salt.

  • The purpose of this study was to understand the pollution level of the surface sediment of Sihwa Lake by assessing its geochemical characteristics and investigating the spatial distribution of trace metals and organic matter. In the surface sediment of Sihwa lake, the mean grain size was between 2.94 and 6.35 Ø and the main type of sediment was sandy silt. The concentrations of As, Co, Cr, Ni, V and Li among the metal elements in the surface sediment were correlated with the mean crust concentration (p<0.05). Based on the strong correlation between the metals (Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn) and organic matter (Ignition Loss), the concentrations of these metal elements seem to be controlled by the organic matter dilution effect. The trace metal pollution level, determined by applying the Republic of Korea Marine environmental standard and the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's sediment quality guidelines, showed the pollution level of As to be either close to or in excess of the above-mentioned standards at almost all levels. The enrichment factor and geoaccumulation index of As showed that there was an incremental increase of pollution by elements other than V, Cr, Co, Fe, Al and Mn. Moreover, the nearby industrial area and dike were more polluted than the other areas, so the surface sediments in Sihwa lake should be monitored by taking into consideration the geological variations.

  • Variable weld bead penetrations related to the base metal chemistry of stainless steels in GTA welding have been under constant investigations due to their industrial implications. It has been proposed that among other elements, the sulfur content of steels determines the weld pool geometry, particularly its penetration. It is suggested that the surface tension temperature gradient of steels becomes positive with appropriate dosing in sulfur and results in inward melt flow, propitious for deeper welds. However, the chemistry of industrial steels is complex due to the presence of multiple minor elements either deliberately added or remnant impurity traces. With this in view, investigations on 41 austenitic and nine martensitic stainless steels were carried to see if there existed any possible relation between the weld profile and some of the designated elements. The results suggest no direct correlation between sulfur or any other major or trace element and weld penetration. At first glance the results are contradictory to what is often asserted.

  • A total of 48 dust samples were collected from large shopping mall parking lots in Daegu metropolitan city in March 2011. Samples were sieved through a 100 ${\mu}m$ mesh and the concentration of 14 elements have been determined using by ICP after acid extraction. Results showed that Ca, Fe, K, Mg, Mn, Na and V were affected by natural sources while Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn were affected by anthropogenic sources. The measured values were remarkably higher in components from natural sources than in components from anthropogenic sources. Anthropogenic trace element concentrations of ground roof dust were higher than those of ground and underground indoor dust. A large percentage of trace elements came from natural sources rather than anthropogenic sources. The percentage composition of chemicals of ground roof dust were higher than those of ground and underground indoor dust. This study showed that investigated parking lots were rarely contaminated with hazardous heavy metals. The heavy metal pollution of ground roof were higher than those of ground and underground indoors. The correlation analysis among trace elements suggest that components in ground roof were more highly correlated than those in ground and underground indoor. Also anthropogenic trace element levels were well correlated with parking lot age and parking density.

  • In order to examine the extent of environmental contamination at abandoned Samsanjeil Cu mines in Kosung-kun, Kyeongsangnam-do, we have investigated the contaminations and mobility of toxic trace elements from mine wastes including about 280,000 tonnages of tailings by chemical experiments (total extraction, partial extraction by 0.1N HCI and sequential extraction procedure). Total concentrations of trace elements showed that Cu, As, Co, Zn, Pb, and Cd concentrations in tailings were 14.0, 3.6, 3.1, 2.1, 2.1 and 1.6 times greater than those in background soil, respectively. From the proportion of metals bound to the exchangeable and carbonate fractions, the comparative mobility of metals decrease in order of $Zn(29.0\%)>Cu(12.3\%)Pb(9.6\%)>Cd(3.0\%)>As=Co(0.0\%)$. Based on the concentrations, chemical speciations of tailings, waste rock and nearby soil, it was revealed that Cu and Zn were the most possible elements to contaminate the surrounding environment in Samsanjeil mine area. In addition, the tailings had total trace metal concentrations below Dutch guideline values except Cu, and they might not affect adverse impact on environment.

  • This study was undertaken to observe the elemental transition of Interface depending on different pretreatment methods, the number of filings, the kinds of porcelain powders and the various alloys in ceramo-metal restoration. The materials used in this study were Pors-on $4^{(R)}$ and Ceramco porcelain powder to compare the differences depending on the pretreatement methods and the number of firings. Ceramco porcelain powder and Vita porcelain powder were used to compare the differences of elemental transition depending on the porcelain powders. The $Parasil^{(R)},\;PGV^{(R)}$ and Pors-on $4^{(R)}$ as Pd-Ag alloy were used to compare the difference of elemental transition depending on the various alloys. The pretreatment methods were : no treatment, treatment under vacuum and air, treatment with 50 % hydrofluoric acid and double heat tretament. The number of firings were 3, 5 and 7 repeated firings All specimens were observed by SEM and concentration of elements were analyzed quantitatively with EPMA The results of this study were obtained as follows : 1. In the groups of air-treatment, concentration of Sn were the highest and widest. A high concentration of In were in the groups of vacuum and air treatment. 2. There were no significant differences in concentration of Sn between the group of vacuum, 5 minutes hydrofluoric acid and double heat treatment. (p>0.05) 3. As the period of time of hydrofluoric acid treatment increased, not only were the trace elements reduced but the main components such as Pd and Ag were also reduced. 4. Concentration of Sn and In increased and diffused with repeated firings but 5 repeated and 7 repeated firings groups had no significant differences. (p>0.05) 5. Sn were more concentrated in the group of Ceramco porcelaion powder than Vita porcelain powder. 6. The higher concentration of trace elements in the alloy, the more increasing concentration of Sn and In in the interface.
