Fishing selectivity is determined by the level of voluntary escaping behavior in accordance with decision-making based on the relationship between fish size and mesh size. This study examined movement during the swimming behavior of black porgy in a trawl's towing cod-end and analyzed the movement components such as swimming speed, angular velocity of turning, and distance to the net over time. Most of the observed fish exhibited an optomotor response, maintaining position and swimming speed without changing direction. Others exhibited erratic or 'panic' behavior with sudden changes in swimming speed and direction. The latter behavior involved very irregular and aperiodic variations in swimming speed and angular velocity, termed 'chaotic behavior.' Thus, the results of this study can be applied to a chaotic behavior model as a time series of swimming movements in the towing cod-end for the fishing selectivity.
A shaking motion could be used to improve fish escapement from a cod-end net by creating a sieving effect over the swept volume or by disturbing the optomotor response of the fish. In this study, a perpendicular shaking motion was generated in a towed cod-end net by a circular canvas attached to the end of the codend, which formed a biased cap-like shape. This concept was tested by using a model in a flow tank and by towing a prototype cod-end during sea trials. For the model tests, the amplitude of the shaking motion was $0.6{\pm}0.1$ times the rear diameter of the cod-end, and the period of the shaking motion was $2.6{\pm}0.1$ s at a flow velocity of 0.6 or 0.8 m/s. In the sea trials, the amplitude was $0.5{\pm}0.2$ times the rear diameter of the cod-end, and the period of the shaking motion was $7{\pm}4$ s at towing speeds of 1.2 or 1.7 m/s. Thus, the shaking amplitude during the sea trials was equal to or less than that observed in the tank tests, and the shaking period was twice as long. The shaking motion described by the amplitude and period could be an effective means to stimulate fish escapement from cod-end during fishing operations considering the response of the fish.
An active stimulating device (ASD) using a rope apparatus may operated by the flow of turbulence inside a cod end, generating variable stimuli in addition to flow-related effects to minimize the by-catch of juvenile fishes. Preliminary testing involved a hydrodynamic effect inside the cod end with a rotating rope kite or conical rope array to generate variable stimuli (visual stimuli, water flow, or physical contact with fish) to change fish position. The experimental rope kite offered more choice in rotating period and range of sweeping action; adjusting the towing line or flow velocity helped to drive fish toward the net panel and encouraged escape. The conical shape of the rope array in the cod end helped to clear a path for fish by disturbing the rigging and providing more contrast between objects, preventing an optomotor response. This enabled more black porgy to be herded toward the net at an early stage of towing. Therefore, either a conical rope array or a rotating rope kite can be used as an effective ASD to prevent juvenile by-catch.
Using empirical data of fish performance and physiological limits as well as physical stimuli and environmental data, a cod-end selectivity model based on a chaotic behavior model using the psycho-hydraulic wheel and neural-network approach was established to predict fish escape or herding responses in trawl and cod-end designs. Fish responses in the cod-end were categorized as escape or herding reactions based on their relative positions and reactions to the net wall. Fish movements were regulated by three factors: escape time, a visual looming effect, and an index of body girth-mesh size. The model was applied to haddock in a North Sea bottom trawl including frequencies of movement components, swimming speed, angular velocity, distance to net wall, and the caught-fish ratio; simulation results were similar to field observations. The ratio of retained fish in the cod-end was limited to 37-95% by optomotor coefficient values of 0.3-1.0 and to 13-67% by looming coefficient values of 0.1-1.0. The selectivity curves generated by this model were sensitive to changes in mesh size, towing speed, mesh type, and mesh shape.
The experiments were carried out to decide the selective fishing gear of the shrimp beam trawl fishery. The model nets were made of General type, Double-level type and Grid type. The model experiments were carried out to test opening efficiency and towing tension. The experimental tanks were the flume tank [$8.0L{\times}2.8W{\times}1.4H(m)$] and the towing tank [$85L{\times}10W{\times}3.5H(m)$] in National Fisheries Research and Development Institute. The full scale experiments were carried out to compare the selectivity of General type net, Double-level type net and Grid type net in the southern sea of korea. The vertical opening (net height) of the model nets can be expressed as a function of the towing velocity as the straight line. The towing tension of the model nets can be expressed as a function of the towing velocity as the parabola. The shrimp catching rates of upper cod end in Boryeong and tongyeong were 78%, 9% respectively, but the rates of lower cod end were 23%, 91% respectively. The number bycatch rates of General type and Grid type were 23%, 11% respectively, and the weight bycatch rates were 34%, 31% respectively. A selective shrimp beam trawl net is Grid type in korea coastal sea.
An active stimulating method for juvenile fishes to drive escaping from mesh of the codend was examined by shaking canvas in the bottom trawl followed by shrimp beam trawl. Field fishing trials by a bottom trawl were carried out between the Geomoondo and Jejudo in west of South sea, Korea by conver-net methods to examine the effect on the reduction of juvenile fish as a discard catch by generating a shaking movement of the codend using two pieces of asymmetrical semi-circular canvas. The mean period of the shaking motion with the round canvas was 10-15 s, and the range of amplitude as a vertical depth change was up to 0.4-0.6 m when towing speed 3.4-4.3 k't as estimated by peak event analysis. The escape rate of juvenile fish in conver-net by total juvenile bycatch (codend and cover-net) in 14 trials increased from 20% in a steady codend to 34% using a shaking codend in the bottom trawl, while the marketing catch or total bycatch was similar between steady and shaking cod ends. There was no difference in the body size of the fish and species composition between the steady and shaking cod ends. Above results demonstrate a new method for bycatch reduction actually up to 18% using an active stimulating device, although further experiments are needed to increase an effective shaking motion of the codend in amplitude and period for more bycatch reduction.

The authors carried out an experiment to determine the horizontal opening of the mid water trawl gear, which is the same as was used in the foreward experiment concerned to the attitude and opening efficiency of otter board. The trawl net .used in the experiment was designed to have a square sectional four-seamed body with two three-sepenlted wings. Each wing tip was rigged with a net pendant of 70 m long and the fore ends of the pendants were directly jointed to the otter pendant without inserting hand rope, and a front weight of 200 kg weigh was rigged with in front of the lowest wing tip. To determine the opening between otter boards ani between wing tips, two 50 KHz fish finders were set sideways on the otter board and on the port middle wing tip so as to detect the distance froa the finders to the starboard otter board and to the wing tip respectively, and the informations were transmitted to the indicators onboard the ship through water-tight cables. The results obtained can be summarized as follows: 1. The openings between otter borads were 43-45 m in case of the warp 100 m, 53-55 m in the war;> 150 m and 54-59 m in the warp 200 m. It was increased in linear according to the increase of towin; speed in the range of 1. 1-1. 8 mlscc. 2. The determined values of the openings between otter boards were greater than the estimated values. which were calculated by the opening between warps at the gallows of the ship and the length of tt~ warp, assuming that the warps from the top rollers to the otter boards were straight. The rates of the determined values to the estimated values were 1. 23-11. 0 in case of the warp 100 m, 1. 23-1. 12 in the warp 150 m and 1. 23-1. 15 in the warp 200 m respectively. The rates were almost the same at the slow towing speed of 1. 3 mlscc or so, then the higher the speed, the less the rate, and the longer the warp, the greater the rate. 3. The rates of the openings between otter boards to the total length of net pendant and the net (excluded cod end) showed 43-43% in case of the warp 150-200 m. It was a little smaller than th~ standard. which is 50%. in the common bottom trawl. 4. The determined openings between wing tips were 18-19 m in case of the warp 100m, 21-22 m in the warp 150 rn, They showed that the higher the speed, the greater the openings even though its range was no more than 1 m or so. 5. The rates of openings between otter boards to th~ openings betwee:l wing tips were almost invariably 38%. 6. The rates of openigs b2tween otter boards to the lenth of h~ad rope were 60-65% in cas': of th~ warp lOa-150m. It were much larg2r than th~ standard. which is 50%. in the common botto:n trawl.
