Partially sericitized tourmaline from a pegmatite, Black Hills, South Dakota, U.S.A., was investigated using high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). Muscovite occurs as the only alteration product of tourmaline, and it is developed extensively as narrow veinlets along the {110} and {100} cleavage directions of tourmaline, indicating that a cleavage-controlled alteration mechanism was dominant. Muscovite was characterized mainly as two-layer polytypes with minor stacking disorder, but tourmaline is almost free of structural defects. HRTEM images of tourmaline-muscovite interfaces revealed that the interfaces between two minerals are composed of well-defined {110} and {100} boundaries of tourmaline. The (001) of muscovite is in general parallel to the c-axis of tourmaline, but tourmaline and replacing muscovite do not show specific crystallographic orientation relationship; muscovite consists of numerous 100-1000$\AA$ thick subparallel packets, and the angles between the (001) of muscovite and (110) of tourmaline is highly variable. Al/Si ratios of both minerals suggest that tourmaline to muscovite alteration by late magnetic fluids has been facilitated by their similar Al/Si ratio in the incipient alteration stage, in that the hydration reaction with preservation of Al and Si would require only addition of K+ and H2O. Aluminous minerals other than muscovite were not characterized as the alteration products of tourmaline, indicating that tourmaline reacted directly to muscovite; the tourmaline alteration apparently occurred by the presence of residual fluids in which K+ is available and silica was not undersaturated.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the effect of tourmaline Gemstone therapy on dysmenorrhea and painful menstruation in middle school female students. Method: This study employed a one-group pretest-posttest design. Data was collected from 15 subjects from September 1 to November 31, 2005. Tourmaline Gemstone therapy was provided once during a peak time of dysmenorrhea and painful menstruation. The instrument used were modified Moos's MDQ(Menstrual Distress Questionnaire) tool and VAS. Data was analyzed with the use SPSS. Result: There was a statistically significant difference in the dysmenorrhea(t=5.50, p=.000) and painful menstruation(t=6.49, p=.000) after the intervention with tourmaline gemstone therapy. Conclusion: Tourmaline Gemstone therapy using a Tourmaline Gemstone therapy has a positive effect on decreasing dysmenorrhea and painful menstruation.
Hydrothermal tourmaline occurs as aggregates or dissemination in the diaspore nodule from an aluminum-rich clay deposit, Milyang, southeastern Korea. Most crystals of tourmaline show complex textures that are finely zoned. The fine-scale chemical zonation of hydrothermal tourmaline reflects the fluctuation conditions that would be expected from fluid mixing in open systems. Oscillatory chemical zoning in tourmaline formed and showed similar patterns, regardless of its crystallographic directions. Mg was enriched in the early stage of crystal growth while Fe was enriched in the later stage, with fluctuations of the ratio of Fe to Mg. Chemical analysis, BSE images, and X-ray compositional maps confirm that the oscillatory Boning in tourmaline is exclusively controlled by the variations of Fe and Mg contents, but the contribution of boron to the zonation is insignificant. The fact that tourmaline altered to diaspore and dickite indicates that tourmaline was unstable with respect to these aluminous minerals as the B, Fe, and Mg activities decreased. Therefore, the aluminum activity may control the stability of tourmaline in the hydrothermal system.
In this study, we have performed electron probe micro analyzer (EPMA), X-ray differaction (XRD), inductively coupled plasma spectroscopy (ICP), Fourier transform Raman spectroscopy (FT-Raman), far-infrared (FIR), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), and pH-DO Analyses for characterizing medicinal mineralogy aspect of the black tourmaline (Shantung, china), black and pink tourmaline (Minas Geraris, Brazil), black touemaline (Daeyu mine, Korea). In addition, heating effects of the tourmaline sauna as well as the effects of tourmaline powder-added soap on skin troubles have been investigated. It has been revealed that chemical composition of the tourmaline is either high in Fe-, Al-, B-rich types. Ratio of the K-Ca, Na-K, and Fe-B reflects the component change property of solid solution. $CaO/CaO+Na_2O$ and MgO/FeO+MgO ratio show high positive correlation. When tourmaline reacts with distilled water, extended reaction time DO values approximately decrease and it stabilizes at DO = 10. Otherwise, pH values increase until 6 hours and it stabilizes at pH = 8 after 24 hours. Distilled water changes to alkaline when it reacts with tourmaline powder and particles. Tourmaline showed lower absorption spectrum strength and transmittance at short wave, where absorption spectrum wavelength and strength were determined by the content of the composition elements and characteristics of crystallography. Increase of the Fe content has been confirmed to be the cause for the reduction of irradiation. For the chemical composition and spectral property of the tourmaline particle samples, it has been found that Si and Fe contents show positive correlation with Far-Infrared irradiation, while Al and Mg contents show negative correlation. For tourmaline powder, it has been confirmed that $^{17}O-NMR$ FWHM (full width at half maximum) decreases when reacts with distilled water. Tourmaline sauna (approximately $100^{\circ}C$) was found to increase $0.5-1.5^{\circ}C$ of body temperature, average of 12 heartbeat, and 10mg Hg of blood pressure. Tourmaline soap had very good aesthetic effect to skin and was confirmed to have above the average improvements to skin troubles (e.g., allergy or atopy).

The felsitic intrusives of Bulguksa granitic rocks of late Cretaceous in age are located at Mt. Daeduk, Daegu, where two different types of tourmalines are found. Two tourmalines show rounded and radiating in morphology and are found in separated region, but in same felsitic rocks. In this study, we investigate the chemical differences between two types of tourmaline and the effect of growing condition of the crystal on the its morphology. The rounded tourmaline has more amounts of Al and vacancy and less amounts of Ca, Na, K, Fe, Mn, Mg, which commonly occupy X and Y-site of the tourmaline. On the basis of the Diffusion-limited aggregation model, morphological irregularity indicates the active mobility of the magma. The radiating tourmaline, therefore, crystallized with active magma condition relatively, and the rounded tourmaline crystallized with stable magma condition created by decreasing temperature and the concentration of felsic components as the magma differentiate continually.
The Daeyou pegmatite is located at the central westerm part of the peninsula. Geology of the mine area consists mainy of pre-Combrian granite gneiss and leucoratic gneiss which are intruded by Mesozoic granites. The pegmatite deposits occur within granite gneiss. Most of pegmatites contain quartz, perthite, microcline-perthite, microcline, sodic plagioclase and tourmaline as dominant minerals with accessory minerals of mica (muscovite, biotite, sericite)and pyrite. Tourmaline occurs as four types: 1) unaltered single crystals, 2) patially sericitized grains bordered by sericite assemblage, 3) tourmaline intergrown with feldspar and qurtz grains, and 4) tourmaline introduced veinlet/ On the basic of optical, X-ray diffraction and chemical analysis, the composition of tourmaline mostly falls on the schorl-elbaite join, in the composition of tourmaline mostly falls on the schorl-elbraite join, in the composition of schorl end member from 0 to about 50%. In spite of the different occurrences, chemical composition of tourmaline shows the limited ranges as follows: $SiO_{2}$ (34.53~35.01 wt.%), $Al_{2}O_{3}$ (33.58~34.26wt.%), FeO (13.73~14.17wt.%), $Na_{2}O$ (1.60~1.72wt.%), MgO (0.56~0.72wt.%), MnO (0.12~0.18wt.%), CaO (0.02~0.06wt.%), $K_{2}O$(0.02~0.03wt.%) $TiO_{2}$ (0.02~0.05wt.%) and $Cr_{2}O_{3}$ (0.02~0.03wt.%). K-Ar ages of the muscovite and sericite fall between 1010$\pm$15 and 1074$\pm$16Ma and between 161.56$\pm$3.09 and 161.67$\pm$Ma, respectivrly. This means that hydrothrmal alteration occurred during middle Jurassic, whereas the pegmatite was initally formed during the late proterozoic age.

Na-Fe Tourmalene ($NaFe_3Al_6B_3Si_6O_{27}F_4$)single crystals were grown by FZ method. The Growth conditions are counter rotation 20~30rpm, growth rate 1~5mm/hr in the atmospheric environment. The transition elements as Fe(in this research), Mn, Co, etc, are exist in the theoretical fomulae so that dopants were not added. The feed rod was sintered between $1000^{\circ}C$ and $1l00^{\circ}C$, but at higher temperature, it was difficult to manufacture the feed rod because of evaporation of the elements such as F.
As grown crystals had a black color and the length of 50~60mm, the diameter of 5~6mm. X-ray powder diffraction pattern indicated that the composition of the feed rod was right to the Tourmaline composition. By FT-IR spectra, the state of bonding of each element was charaterized.
$M{\ddot{o}}ssbauer$ and Infrared absorption spectra of the iron-bearing tourmaline minerals show that the ferrous and ferric ions occupy the Y and Z octahedral sites. The Fe ions are almost ferrous, predominantly partitioning into Y site and partly take in Z site. The $Fe^{2+}$ content of the Z sites in brownish black tourmaline minerals are higher than that in blue/green tourmaline minerals. Therefore, 720 nm peak of brownish black samples is broader than that of blue/green samples in optical spectra. All of the blue/green tourmaline minerals used in experiment have only $Fe^{2+}$ ion. The IR spectra of tourmaline depend on the cation environments around OH groups, as also evidenced by their chemical analyses. There appear no difference in IR spectrum between O(1)H and O(3)H binding characters in the heat-treated samples. But the characteristic $3565cm^{-1}$ peak appears in the ferrous hydroxyl bearing silicates, where dehydroxylation temperature for OH coordinated to $Fe^{2+}$ is $700{\sim}800^{\circ}C$.
