Horatio Alger's Ragged Dick (1868) betrays the economic and social system of nineteenth-century America through a self-reformative bootblack's quest for respectability. Being considered a space of constant danger, nineteenth-century New York City serves as a game board, and both visitors and residents of the city are supposed to avoid dangers while moving across its space. Dick Hunter, the juvenile protagonist of the novel, illustrates a street-child who starts his game of life from the backline of the game board. Continuing his quest for respectability, not only must he abandon the bad habits that he acquired as a street-child, but he also must avoid thieves and swindlers just like a tourist or like a player of nineteenth-century American board games. As Dick's social rise goes parallel with his movement in the city space, his entrance to a bank brings him the access to other respectable places, and a series of entrance turns him into a legitimate subject in the official system of the American society. While he continues his game of life successfully with the help of gentlemen patrons, in reality it is almost impossible for a disadvantaged player to escape the backline of the society. Thus, Dick's success story presents Alger's fantasy about the ideal economic system in which materials and persons are endlessly circulated.

Since 1995, when local autonomy policies were enacted in Korea, many local governments have adopted festival-centered place-marketing strategies, in order to develop their regional economies by attracting tourists, as well to provide the general public with information about local comparative advantages. This study assesses the spread effect of the Cheongdo Bull-Fighting Festival upon the regional tourism industry, by analysing questionnaire data obtained from festival visitors and merchants at other major tourist attractions in the area. It is concluded that the Cheongdo Bull-Fighting Festival has been insufficient in attaining the objective of developing the regional economy and the tourism industry, because at present, most of the festival spectators are not tourists as such, but rather residents of the Cheongdo daily community (Daegu metropolitan area), and they do not visit other major tourist attractions in conjunction with attending the festival. It is recommended that planning authorities adopt a strategy explicitly designed to increase the "tourists to local residents" ratio, and to improve tourism services to facilitate intra-regional movement of tourists and visitors alike.
The study analyzed the frequency of simultaneous occurrence of keywords presented in a total of 805 papers published in domestic journals from 1995 to 2019 by social network analysis(SNS) method, and examined core keywords of each period(5 years), in order to understand the research trends of the rural residential environment. The main results are as follows. First, as a result of the analysis of centrality, 'Community', 'Tourism' and 'Comprehensive Rural Village Development Project' were the top 3 keywords. Second, examined by each period, the top keywords are 'Eco Friendly' in 2000~2004, 'Tourism' in 2005~2009 and 2010~2014, 'Community' in 2015~2019. Third, comparing the structural characteristics of core keywords 2nd, 3rd, and 4th period, a network centering on 'Tourism' was clearly formed in the 2nd period. 'Tourism' was divided into 'Community' and a movement to form a separate group appeared in the 3rd period. In the 4th period, 'Community' was found to form a network without direct connection with 'Tourism'. The results of this study suggest the trend change of viewpoint for the rural area in the domestic research on rural residential environment. It has been confirmed that while the research had been carried out with the viewpoint of rural area as a 'tourist attraction' or 'sightseeing spot' for the urban citizens until the mid-2010s, in the research of late 2010s the viewpoint has settled down as a 'residential space' or 'space for new economic activities' of a variety of rural residents.

As COVID-19 made it difficult to travel abroad and attract domestic tourists to foreigners, the phenomenon of MZ generations flocking to Jeju through consumption patterns occurred. In this study, if Jeju Island uses Jeju's rural tourism and smart glasses to study how to attract and cope with domestic tourists after the pandemic and build a mobile application or smart glass to tour based on village maps, the docent guide service through smart glasses will help tourists. Furthermore, it would be very beneficial to introduce a location-based service to provide the necessary information at the location according to the movement path of tourists. In fact, we conclude that it can be implemented through the development of the Hansung Baekje Museum, and hope that the actual media can be applied to free tourist courses such as Jeju Olle Trail, as it provides various contents in selective development such as AR and VR.

The advent of the 4th Industrial Revolution due to the trigger of digital technologies such as artificial intelligence and big data has caused many changes in society, culture, and industry. However, traditional markets in each region are not responding quickly to new distribution environments and consumer changes. In particular, in the case of traditional markets in Jeju, regional characteristics such as marketing strategies for tourists visiting Jeju have not been utilized. Therefore, this study proposes the establishment of a smart traditional market based on big data and artificial intelligence that utilizes the regional characteristics of Jeju. The research contents include customer profiling through visitor big data analysis, providing tourist movement results through traffic analysis, providing real-time popular product charts, and developing video-based fire and crime prevention functions.
The purpose of this study is to propose ways to revitalize the local economy by analyzing the index changes and tourism big data before and after the opining of the KTX on the Gangneung Line in Gangneung City, where the population continues to decline. For This, the main current status of Gangneung-si and internal operation record data(DTG) of Gangneung-si were analyzed. After that, changes in the movement behavior of public transportation users before and after the opening of the KTX Gangneung Line were compared. As a result, it was possible to observe changes in tourist transportation preferences, demographic shifts, alterations in small-scale business sectors and in the travel patterns of tourists within the city of Gangneung. In particular, changes in the small business sector have shown an increase in general restaurants, leisure food establishments(cafes, etc.), and accommodation facilities following the opening of the KTX Gangneung Line. All three sectors have experienced growth concentrated in the vicinity of Gangneung Station, indicating the influence of Gangneung Station, which opened in the central part of Gangneung city, following the inauguration of the KTX Gangneung Line.

This study examined how historical facts of the past were established as a symbol or identity of a region and reorganized in the present local communities. Janseong has reorganized regional symbols through a regional festival named Hong-gil-dong Festival based on its tradition and cultural resources and used them as a strategy for the regional revitalization. Jangseong was known as "a district of noble scholars" represented by the Philam Seowon(local school) enshrining Kim In-hoo, a superior one of the Confusion scholars of Joseon period. And it was considered as "a place of justice" because of historical fact that it was an important base of Donghak movement and the struggle by righteous soldiers who fought for the country in the late Joseon period. Moreover, as the place which is assumed as a birthplace of Hong Gil-dong, a hero of the Hong Gil-dong story was excavated, the local government has reorganized Mr. Hong as a symbol of the region and has held the Hong Gil-dong festival for its development. In spite of its short history, the festival was established as a representative of Janseong. It also created various regional cultural attractions such as regional logos of Hong Gil-dong and a tourist attraction of his birthplace. Jangseong reorganized its tradition for the regional revitalization through a business-oriented property of the event strategy enforcing a dynamic and external image. In the aspects of tradition reorganization and use for actual development, it is sure that the Hong Gil-dong Festival will work for true integration and revitalization of the region by providing experiences of reorganized regional tradition and culture along with various regional landscapes.
This study was to investigate the elasticity in tourism demand of Chinese tourists visiting Malaysia through ARDL models by using Chinese tourists arrivals, GDP, CPI, transportation costs and others. When China was implementing an open-door policy with foreign countries in the early 15th century, the movement of Chinese was very limited, and then communication between China and other countries was very weak. However, the Chinese government persistently and entirely implemented an open-door policy by participating in the World Trade Organization(WTO) in 2001. The Chinese government has opened the economy through foreign direct investment by providing various incentives for foreign investment. As a result, inbound and outbound Chinese movements increased in the early 21st century. China was one of the top five most visited tourist destinations in the world by 2016, and also Chinese tourists traveling abroad increased, so they made Malaysia a popular tourists destination because of increase sharply to around 1.41 million. This study examined the significance of major economic factors affecting the increase in Chinese tourists arriving in Malaysia. Other factors that induced their arrival included income, tourism prices, transportation costs and promotional activities. Short-run shocks from the Asian economic crisis and the outbreak of SARS were included to understand how tourism demand in Malaysia was affected. Finally this study found that the combination of the ARDL and the Error Correction Model were useful to statistically estimate the elasticities of tourism demand.
The twenty-first century revealed the era of cultural contents with the growth of digital cultures. Accordingly, popular culture became the primary sector of the cultural industry, and among them, the roads on which people walk emerged as great content for the leisure and tourist industry. Walking has already become a commercial good, as each road's story is unique enough to attract numerous tourists. On roads are the development of history, movement of life, and various cultural channels. The old road development project contributes to the revitalization of the neighborhood and increases its competitiveness as cultural content, as it restores the ecological nature and rediscovers the value of the road from history and its culture. For Gangwon-do's road development project, a storytelling strategy is necessary to succeed as cultural tourism content. Specifically, when forming an image of the old roads, it is advantageous to develop a new story that suits modern people's aesthetic taste and lead communication between locals and tourists rather than borrowing and utilizing the existing facts. For instance, it is helpful to recreate the nostalgic and sentimental mood and combine the imagination based on the consumers' humanistic experiences to create their own participation. This paper demonstrates the historical value of the roads in Gangwon-do, precedents of other leading road development projects in South Korea, and development plans by storytelling for cultural contents in Gangwon-do.
