  • Purpose This study investigated the impact of review language style (affective vs. cognitive) on review helpfulness and the moderating effects of the types of attractions in the relationships between the review language and its helpfulness. Design/methodology/approach This study investigates the impact of review language style (affective vs. cognitive) on review helpfulness and the moderating effects of the types of attractions in the relationships between the review language and its helpfulness. This study selected two hedonic and utilitarian attractions (Hedonic: Brandenburg Gate, Utilitarian: Peragamon Museum) located in Berlin. A total of 3,320 reviews was collected from TripAdvisor. We divided online reviews posted for these places into reviews with more affective language and with more cognitive language by using the LIWC. Then, we investigated the impact of language effect on review helpfulness across the attraction type. Findings The findings suggest that peers tend to judge more helpful toward cognitive language in attraction reviews regardless of attraction type. This study found that peers tend to perceive more helpful toward cognitive review in utilitarian attractions. Even though there was an interaction effect between review language and attraction type, in hedonic attractions, the influence of cognitive language was reduced, but still cognitive reviews would get more helpful votes.

An investigation into the glorifying heritage of these eight SAARC nations pinpoints towards their rich food and culinary heritage that is yet to be explored to carve them as food destinations that would definitely help ameliorating tourism too. The Global Report on Food Tourism of the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) reveals results from a survey on food tourism marketing promotion, from which internet marketing tools, such as websites have been effectively utilized to promote food tourism in a particular destination. (UNWTO, 2012). Sensing the importance of the websites in the promotion of food tourism for any destination, the present study aims at the comparative content analysis of the official tourism websites of SAARC nations to evaluate their performance from the perspective of promotion of culinary heritage on world -wide web. The modified Balanced ScoreCard (BSC) approach is incorporated into the evaluation by taking into consideration four perspectives: technical, user friendliness and site attractiveness, tourism effectiveness and food tourism effectiveness. A set of 88 critical success factors representing these four perspectives is then used to examine the websites. The study reflects on the relative strength and weakness of the tourism websites of SAARC nations in promoting food tourism and as well help suggesting the remedial measures catalyzing the food tourism promotion through websites.

  • Data plays an ever greater part in the tourism industry. While the platform-based sharing of open public data, private-sector intermediary platforms, and the use of social media to understand consumer trends are already well recognized, more potential for innovation exists in sharing private data among organizations in Smart Tourism Destinations. Research into the factors enabling and hindering coopetition in this kind of data sharing platforms is still in the nascent stage of development. Our case study of Sapporo, a major Japanese city endeavouring to create itself as a Smart Tourism Destination, sheds light on the initial approaches to involve organizations to such a data sharing agreement. Founding on seven interviews with ten participants of Sapporo Smart City project organization (SARD), we derived enablers and impediments that promote coopetition in data sharing as part of Smart Tourism Destination development. We also present practical recommendations and future research opportunities for such initiatives.

  • In 1991, the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) declared "tourism accessible for all" recommending the practice of the right to enjoy tourism. According to the Ministry of Health and Welfare of Korea (2019), the disabled, who are the most vulnerable in tourism, accounted for 5.1% of the total population, and the number of the elderly over 65 is expected to increase to 20.3% by 2025. In particular, the need for customized policies has been raised as the proportion of disabled people among the elderly aged 65 and over continues to increase. Thus, this study identified the spatial characteristics of Universal Design (UD) tourist destinations considering the tourism vulnerable groups. Administrative units (425 dongs) in Seoul were used as spatial units for analysis. As a research method, first, a spatial model was specified through LM verification, and then spatial regression analysis was performed. As a result of the analysis, the spatial characteristics of UD tourist destinations were found to have positive (+) effects on the number of universally certified businesses, the number of restaurants, and the number of bus stops that were available to the vulnerable. It was confirmed that there are a large number of universal certified businesses, restaurants, and bus stops in dongs with UD tourist destinations. The findings will provide policy implications when promoting the right to enjoy tourism in the future and improving Korean universal design quality.

  • Research has shown that authentic experiences at tourist destinations, referred to as destination authenticity, lead to increased revisit intentions and recommendations. However, studies demonstrating the impact of destination authenticity on everyday purchasing behavior are scarce. To address this research gap, based on autobiographical memory and consumer inference theory, this study re-examines the relationship between destination authenticity and purchase behavior toward brands created in tourism destinations encountered in everyday life. This study reveals that brand authenticity mediates destination authenticity's effect on the purchase intention toward destination brands. Furthermore, the effects of destination authenticity on brand authenticity, as well as brand authenticity on purchase intention, are moderated by destination brand self-congruence. The findings of this study contribute to the literature by examining the mechanisms of tourists' purchase behavior, based on autobiographical memory and consumer inference theory. In addition, it sheds light on the boundary conditions under which the impact of destination authenticity on brand authenticity and that of brand authenticity on purchase intention are enhanced.

Research design, data, and methodology - The survey of this study was conducted on the visitors to the top 10 spa destinations in Korea from April 8 ~ April 21, 2017, and a total of 300 questionnaires were distributed. Of them, effective questionnaires used in the final study were a total of 241. In this study, empirical analysis was made through frequency analysis, factor analysis, and multidimensional scaling ALSCAL(spinning symmetry for image similarity and rectangle for attributes recognition) by using the Statistics Package SPSS 24.0. Results - According to the analysis result of spa destination image similarity, the stress level was 0.16453 and the level of the stress was good. Moreover, the coefficient of determination (RSQ) was, which had a description of each aspect of the spa destination, 0.79908. According to the results of attribute recognition, the stress value of 0.11805 represents a degree of conformity, and the coefficient of determination(RSQ) appeared at 0.98665. Therefore, the results of this analysis are that the similarities between spa destinations and the attribute recognition of the spa destinations is a suitable model that is properly expressed in two dimensions. Conclusions - First, according to the analysis result of image similarity, Deoksan & Dogo spa revealed similar images, as well as the Dongrae and Yuseong spa, while on the contrary Asan, Bomun, Suanbo spa has different images from the rest. • Not only can air pollution reduce the overall competitiveness of tourist destinations, but also changes tourists' travel decisions, thereby affecting the tourism flows. The study presents a machine learning method to analyze how the haze pollution puts spatial effect on tourism flows in China from 2001 to 2018, and reveals the regional differences in heterogeneity among eastern, central, and western China. Our investigation reveals three interesting observations. First, the Environmental Kuznets Curve of the impact of haze pollution on tourism flows is not significant. In the eastern and western regions, the interaction between haze pollution and domestic tourism flows as well as inbound tourism flows shows an inverted U-shaped curve respectively. Second, there is an significantly positive spillover effect of tourism flows in all of the eastern, central, and western regions. As to the intensity of spillover, domestic tourism flows is higher than that of the inbound tourism flows. Both of the above figures are greatest in the eastern. Third, the Chinese haze pollution mainly reduces the inbound tourism flows, and only imposes significantly negative direct effects on the domestic tourism flows in the central region. In the central and eastern regions, significantly negative direct effects and spillover effects are exerted on inbound tourism.
