Glutaminase production in Zygosaccharomyces rouxii by solid-state fermentation (SSF) is detailed. Substrates screening showed best results with oatmeal (OM) and wheatbran (WB). Furthermore, a 1:1 combination of OM:WB gave 0.614 units/gds with artificial sea water as a moistening agent. Evaluation of additional carbon, nitrogen, amino acids, and minerals supplementation was done. A central composite design was employed to investigate the effects of four variables (viz., moisture content, glucose, corn steep liquor, and glutamine) on production. A 4-fold increase in enzyme production was obtained. Studies were undertaken to analyze the time-course model, the microbial growth, and nutrient utilization during SSF. A logistic equation ($R^2$=0.8973), describing the growth model of Z. rouxii, was obtained with maximum values of ${\mu}_m$ and $X_m$ at $0.326h^{-1}$ and 7.35% of dry matter weight loss, respectively. A goodfit model to describe utilization of total carbohydrate ($R^2$=0.9906) and nitrogen concentration ($R^2$=0.9869) with time was obtained. The model was used successfully to predict enzyme production ($R^2$=0.7950).
In order to evaluate the air quality, dry and wet deposition samples were collected by deposit containers during four months in Inchon area. The samples were analyzed for its solid composition and trace elements(Ca, Cd, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, Zn). The main results are summarized below 1. The amounts of dry and wet deposition in Inchon area were 1.06~3.14 ton/$km^2$/month, and affected by the rainfall and suspended yellow sand. 2. Through the analysis of solid balance, we found that 50% of total solids(TS) was fixed suspend ed solids(FSS), 25% was fixed dissolved solids(FDS), and each of volatile suspended solids(VSS) and volatile dissolved solids(VDS) accounted for 12.5%. 3. The amounts collected by sampler for trace elements were 938 ~ 2,765 $\mu g$ calcium/10days sampler, 0.2 ~ 90.4 $\mu g$ cadmium/10days/sampler, 26 ~ 298 $\mu g$ copper/10days/sampler, 928 ~ 3,939 $\mu g$ iron/10days/sampler, 50 ~ 202 $\mu g$ manganese/10days/sampler, 4 ~ 37 $\mu g$ nickel/10days/sampler, 52 ~ 406 $\mu g$ lead/10days/sampler, and 97 ~ 1,317 $\mu g$ zinc/10days/sampler, respectively. 4. Using the manganese analysis, it was found that 76.1% of TS was from soil.
Operation characteristics of the sequencing batch reactor (SBR) process with electro-flotation (EF) as a solid liquid separation method (EF-SBR) were investigated. EF-SBR process showed excellent solid-liquid separation performance which enabled to separate biosolids from liquid phase within 30 min and to extend cyclic reaction time. Although influent organic loading rate was increased stepwise from 5 to 15 g COD/day, food to microorganisms (F/M) ratio could be maintained about 0.3 g COD/g VSS/day in EF-SBR because biomass concentration could be easily controlled at desired level by EF. However, it was impossible to increase biomass concentration at the same level in control SBR (C-SBR) process because solid-liquid separation by gravity settling showed a limitation at higher mixed liquor suspended solids (MLSS) concentration with 60 min of settling time. Total chemical oxygen demand (TCOD) removal efficiency of EF-SBR process was not decreased although influent organic loading rate became 3 times higher than initial value. However, it was seriously deteriorated in C-SBR process after increasing the rate over 10 g COD/day, which was accounted for insufficient organic removal by relatively higher food to microorganisms (F/M) ratio as well as biosolids wash-out by a limitation of gravity sedimentation.

Strong restrictions on emissions from marine power plants (particularly $SO_x$, $NO_x$) will probably be adopted in the near future. In this paper, a combined solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) and gas turbine fuelled by natural gas is proposed as an attractive option to limit the environmental impact of the marine sector. It includes a study of a heat-recovery system for 18 MW SOFC fuelled by natural gas, to provide the electric power demand onboard commercial vessels. Feasible heat-recovery systems are investigated, taking into account different operating conditions of the combined system. Two types of SOFC are considered, tubular and planar SOFCs, operated with either natural gas or hydrogen fuels. This paper includes a detailed thermodynamic analysis for the combined system. Mass and energy balances are performed, not only for the whole plant but also for each individual component, in order to evaluate the thermal efficiency of the combined cycle. In addition, the effect of using natural gas as a fuel on the fuel cell voltage and performance is investigated. It is found that a high overall efficiency approaching 70% may be achieved with an optimum configuration using SOFC system under pressure. The hybrid system would also reduce emissions, fuel consumption, and improve the total system efficiency.

Experimental studies have been performed to observe the basic phenomena of waste bed combustion in MSW incinerator. A reduced scale apparatus was utilized to simulate the combustion behavior in real plant with 1-dimensional transient behavior at the experimental setup, which uses wet cubic wood with ash content as simulated waste. LHV (lower heating value) of solid fuel, fuel particle size and flow rate of combustion air were taken as important parameters of the bed combustion. For the quantitative analysis, FPR (flame propagation rate), TBT (total burn-out time) and PBT (particle burn-out time) was defined. LHV represent the capability of heat release of the fuel, so that a higher LHV results in faster reaction rate of the fuel bed, which is shown by higher FPR. Fuel particle size is related with surface area per unit mass as well as heat and mass transfer coefficient. As the particle size increases the FPR decreases owing to decreasing specific surface area. Air injection supplies oxygen to the reaction zone. However oversupply of combustion air increases convection cooling of the bed and possibly extinguishes the flame.

Internal Ballistic modeling and performance prediction for solid propellant micro thruster was performed with heat loss to the chamber wall as an important factor of miniaturization. Simple l-D end-burner type thruster and general HTPB-AP type composite propellant were selected for computation model. The results showed that the performance loss with the heat loss to the surroundings becomes larger as the surface-to-volume ratio is increased. In this case, the total impulse was reduced about 3% of the case in adiabatic condition.
In this paper, activated sludge settling was characterized based on field trip and zone settling tests. Plants used for this study include 5 conventional activated sludge processes and 3 A2O type treatment processes. The treatment capacities are in the range from 12,000 to $250,000m^3$/day. Total number of zone settling tests were 188 set and SVI values representing settling characteristics were from 100 to 300 mL/g. It was found out that zone settling velocity of these examined plant sludges can be approximated by mean values calculated by Keinath and Daigger/Roper models. Based on these three models, solid flux analysis were carried out in order to compare design criteria ($3.96{\sim}6.04kg/m^2-hr$) recommended by Korea Sewage Facility Design Guideline with two models used in USA. The results show that design criteria are only applicable for normal condition in settling characteristics (below SVI 100 mL/g). Solid flux analysis of surveyed plants indicates that most of the plants are operated underload conditions except several plants experiencing poor sludge settling problem. Most of the plants are operated under high sludge blanket depths (SBD).
Heat transfer characteristics of heat storing processes in paraffin-filled horizontal circular cylinder is studied. The unmelted solid paraffin is allowed to fall on the bottom wall under gravity. In the upper liquid phase, natural convection is considered to take place while in the lower liquid film between the solid paraffin and the wall conduction is thought to take place instead. Experimental analyses are also carried out. The amount of the latent heat stored is obtained by recording the time wisely changing side area of the solid paraffin photographically. The mass of paraffin melted in the upper section is obtained by substracting the amount of melted mass in the lower section from the total mass melted and therefrom variation of heat transfer rate in each section is studied.
This study compares the effects of flow on oil and suspended solids removal efficiencies in circular enhanced gravity plate separator equipped with coalescence medium. Coalescence medium acts to capture rising oil droplets and settling solid particles and assist in the coalescence of oil and coagulation of solid. The circular separator uses an upflow center-feed perforated-pipe distributor as the inlet. The co-current flow is achieved using 4 increasing sizes of frustum, whereas cross flow uses inclined coalescence plates running along the radius of the separator. The different arrangement gave the cross flow separator a higher coalescence plan area per operational volume, minimal and constant travelling distance for the oil droplets and particles, lower retention time, and higher operational flowrate. The cross flow separator exhibited 6.04% and 13.16% higher oil and total suspended solids removal efficiencies as compared to co-current flow.

Sediment yields from Imha watershed were simulated during 1993-2008 using Hydrologic Simulation Program-Fortran (HSPF). Using observed daily stream flow for 2004-2008 and hourly suspended solid concentration for three events during 2006, HSPF was calibrated and validated at the sites of Imha and Youngyang for stream flow and Dongchun and Jangpachun for sediment yield. The calibration and validation results represented high model efficiency for simulating daily stream flow and hourly suspended solid. The determination coefficients of calibration and validation were 0.90 and 0.81 for daily stream flow, and 0.91 and 0.86 for monthly stream flow, respectively. Based on model tolerances for calibration and validation of stream flow, HSPF performance for simulating stream flow represented 'very good'. The determination coefficients of calibration and validation were 0.94-0.96 and 0.95 for hourly sediment yields, respectively. The average yearly sediment yield during 1993-2008 was 122,290 ton/year and most of sediment yield (77 % of total yield) were generated from June to August. The calibrated HSPF simulated well the movement of water and eroded soil within Imha watershed.
