The conventional methods for total residual chlorine such as iodometry and DPD colorimetric can cause secondary pollution due to additional agents, also have a wide error range. As for alternative, electrochemical method can measure TRC(Total residual chlorine), and is not required as additional agents, also very suitable for using the fields of ballast water because test time is relatively fast. Therefore, this study was investigated for changing charge by agitation, salt concentration, and temperature change. Charge showed differences based on changes of reduction peak with or without agitation. In contrast, TRC and charge were well correlated in constant agitation speed. As TRC and charge were analyzed with high correlations in constant salinity and temperature of ocean, thereby conductivity was firstly measured, and charge had high correlation for TRC in spite of changing salinity and temperature Pt electrode revealed high reliability ($r^2=0.960$) because it was rarely effected by TRC, On the other hand, Au electrode appeared inadequate ($r^2=0.767$) to use sensor in less than 1.0 ppm of TRC. For high accuracy and detection of TRC, Pt and Au electrodes for test time were, respectively, 14 and 22 seconds. As a result, Pt electrode was more valuable than Au electrode in terms of response time.
This study attempts to draw factors for an analysis of the operation effect of a rechlorination facility and autodrain equipment for residual chlorine equalization by installing and operating a rechlorination facility and autodrain equipment in P City and analyzing the practical evaluation method and operation effect. For this purpose, this study selected three indicators for an analysis of the effectiveness of residual chlorine equalization and conducted a comparative analysis before and after the implementation of the residual chlorine equalization. As a result of estimation, (1) the reduction of the residual chlorine concentration range from a water treatment plant to the pipe end was 16.0%; (2) the total reduction of chlorination input was 18.0%; and (3) the reduction of the generation of disinfection by-products was 19.5%. In addition, this achieved enough residual chlorine equalization in the supply process and shows that it could successfully achieve the economic feasibility of investment in equipment and the reduction of the generation of disinfection by-products. Like this, it is judged that the three indicators suggested in this study will be used sufficiently as indicators of an analysis of the effectiveness of residual chlorine equalization according to the operations of the rechlorination facility and autodrain equipment.
We measured by electrochemical method for TRC (total residual chlorine) in ocean. From the results of Au electrode used for working electrode through cyclic voltammetry test, we obtained charge in voltage ranged from 0.0V-1.0V, and analyzed correlations of charge for TRC. Reduction peak TRC was investigated to be approximately 0.65 V vs. Ag/AgCl, and in the case that salt concentrations and temperatures in ocean appeared different, charge was analyzed for being different in the same TRC. However, in the case that each condition was constant, charge was measured at highly correlations for TRC.
Disinfectant residual should be maintained to achieve biological stability during distribution of treated water. The wide distribution of retention times associated with storage and transport of water in a network and the reactivity of disinfectants make it difficult to maintain adequate residuals at critical locations. Rechlorination at some intermediate locations may reduce the total disinfectant dose while keeping residuals within specified limits throughout the water distribution system. In order to select the adequate location of rechlorination for achieving to maintain of residual chlorine throughout the distribution system, EPANET was used in this study. EPANET was well predicted chlorine transport and residual loss in the distribution system. Location of rechlorination was selected to maintain 0.4mg/L of residual chlorine throughout a water distribution system by field investigation and model simulation. The quantity of chlorine may reduced 36.7% and provided smooth residual between 0.42 and 0.60mg/L, when rechlorination would be used continuously at strategic location within the distribution system.
The optimal rechlorination in water distribution systems was investigated by incorporating optimization techniques into a numerical water quality model. For a hypothetical system that consists of 10 junctions including a storage tank and 12 links, the bulk ($k_b$) and pipe-wall ($k_w$) decay-rate constants of chlorine residual are assumed to be 2.0 1/day and 1.5 m/day, respectively. It was also assumed that the lower and upper limits of chlorine residual in the network are 0.2 mg/L and 0.6 mg/L. When the chlorine source is only the storage tank (without rechlorination), the high levels of chlorine residual appear near the storage tank to maintain the chlorine residuals above the lower limit over the junctions. On the other hand, the chlorine residuals in the network are distribute within the desirable range (0.2 - 0.6 mg/L) after the optimal rechlorination through five injection sites including the storage tank. In case of a real water distribution system that comprises 28 junctions including a clear well and 27 links, the bulk and pipe-wall decay-rate constants are 0.3 1/day and 0.2 m/day, respectively. Before rechlorination, the required chlorine residual at the clearwell is 5.1 mg/L to keep the chlorine residuals above the minimum level (0.6 mg/L) over the junctions. By the optimal rechlorination at five injection sites, the chlorine residuals are distributed within a desirable range of 0.6 mg/L through 2.0 mg/L, which can avoid the excess of chlorine residuals near the clear well. Consequently, total chlirine doses are decreased by 81% in the hypothetical distribution network and 69 % in the real distribution network for satisfying the minimum chlorine residuals.
Chlorination of wastewater is recently practiced in Korea. While many researchers have studied the kinetics of aqueous chlorine(HOCl) with nitrogeneous compounds and other organic/inorganic contaminants in drinking water, the researches of wastewater chlorination are relatively few. The purpose of this study was to investigate the chlorine decay kinetics and parameters on wastewater chlorination. Chlorine decay rate increased with increasing initial chlorine concentration. The parameters affecting chlorine decay rate were different in each wastewater treatment plant. One of the most important parameters affecting chlorine decay was initial chlorine concentration, and other parameters such as $NH_3-N$, total coliform, $UV_{254}$ and Fe were also affected. The decay ratio of chlorine was decreased with increasing initial chlorine concentration, and the disinfection efficiency showed good correlation with the decay ratio.
In this study, the effects of a pre-filter system and electrolysis system on the safe and efficient reuse of brine in the cabbage salting process were investigated. First, sediment filter-electrolyzed brine (SF-EB) was selected as brine for reuse. Then, we evaluated the quality and microbiological properties of SF-EB and Chinese cabbage salted with SF-EB. The salinity (9.4%) and pH (4.63) of SF-EB were similar to those of control brine (CB). SF-EB turbidity was decreased (from 0.112 to 0.062) and SF-EB residual chlorine (15.86 ppm) was higher than CB residual chlorine (0.31 ppm), and bacteria were not detected. Salinity (2.0%), pH (6.21), residual chlorine (0.39 ppm), chromaticity, hardness, and chewiness of cabbage salted with SF-EB were similar to those of cabbage salted with CB. The total bacterial count in cabbage salted with CB was increased as the number of reuses increased (from 6.55 to 8.30 log CFU/g), whereas bacteria in cabbage salted with SF-EB was decreased (from 6.55 to 5.21 log CFU/g). These results show that SF-EB improved the reusability of brine by removing contaminated materials and by sterilization.
After etching Al-Cu alloy films using SiCl4/Cl_2/He/CHF3 mixed gas plasma, the corrosion phenomenon at the grain boundary of the etched surface and a passivation layer on the etched surface with an SF6 plasma treatment subsequent to the etching were studied. In Al-Cu alloy system, corrosion occurs rapidly on the etched surface by residual chlorine atoms, and it occurs dominantly at the grain boundaries rather than the crystalline surfaces. To prevent corrosion, the SF6 gas plasma treatment subsequent to etching was carried out. The passivation layer is composed of fluorine-related compounds on the etched Al-Cu surface after the SF6 treatment, and it suppresses effectively corrosion on the surface as the SF6 treatment pressure increases. Corrosion could be suppressed successfully with the SF6 treatment at a total pressure of 300 mTorr. To investigate the reason why corrosion could be suppressed with the SF6 treatment, behaviors of chlorine and fluorine were studied by various analysis techniques. It was also found that the residual chlorine incorporated at the grain boundary of the etched surface accelerated corrosion and could not be removed after the SF6 plasma treatment.
This laboratory study examined the impact of free chlorine residual and pipe material on the formation of biofilm in drinking water distribution pipe surfaces. Result of heterotrophic plate counts(HPC) of the biofilm in the tap water-supplied reactor averaged $2.17{\times}10^5CFU/cm^2$ on PVC and $2.43{\times}10^5CFU/cm^2$ on STS 316, respectively. HPCs on the surface exposed to the tap water containing 0.2mg/L of free chlorinne residual averaged $4.24{\times}10^4CFU/cm^2$ on PVC and $6.54{\times}10^4CFU/cm^2$ on STS 316, respectively. Average of HPC/Total direct counts in the tap water-supplied reactor ranged from 1.08%(PVC) to 1.26%(STS 316) and from 0.38%(PVC) to 0.65%(STS 316) in the reactor supplemented with disinfectant, respectively. No correlation was observed between disinfectant addition and biofilm density. With regard to the biofilm formation, little difference existed between PVC and STS 316. Yellow and red pigmented bacteria were the dominant expressions in bulk fluid, whereas non-pigmented bacteria were found dominant in the biofilm. Pink/red pigmented bacteria were found to be facultative anaerobic, while yellow pigmented bacteria and non-pigmented bacteria were found to be obligate aerobic.
