  • The present study was to determine how seasonal rainfall intensity influences nutrient dynamics, ionic contents, oxygen demands, and suspended solids in a lotic ecosystem. Largest seasonal variabilities in most parameters occurred during the two months of July to August and these were closely associated with large spate of rainfall. Dissolved oxygen (DO) had an inverse function of water temperature (r = = = - 0.986, p<0.001). Minimum pH values of<6.5 were observed in the late August when rainfall peaked in the study site, indicating an ionic dilution of stream water by precipitation. Electrical conductivity (EC) was greater during summer than any other seasons, so the overall conductivity values had direct correlation (r = 0.527, p<0.01) with precipitation. Ionic dilution, however, was evident 4 ${\sim}$ 5 days later in short or 1 ${\sim}$ 2 weeks in long after the intense rain, indicating a time-lag phenomenon of conductivity. Daily COD values varied from 0.8 mg $L^{-1}$ to 7.9 mg $L^{-1}$ and their seasonal pattern was similar (r = 0.548, p<0.001) to that of BOD. Total nitrogen (TN) varied little compared to total phosphorus (TP) and was minimum in the base flow of March. In contrast, major input of TP occurred during the period of summer monsoon and this pattern was similar to suspended solids, implying that TP is closely associated (r = 0.890, p<0.01) with suspended inorganic solids. Mass ratios of TN : TP were determined by TP (r= -0.509, p<0.01) rather than TN (r= -0.209, p<0.01). The N : P ratios indicated that phosphorus was a potential primary limiting nutrient for the stream productivity. Overall data suggest that rainfall intensity was considered as a primary key component regulating water chemistry in the stream and maximum variation in water quality was attributed to the largest runoff spate during the summer monsoon.

  • This study was carried out to reveal the influence of discharge change on matters and stream water quality between pH, EC and dissolved matters obtained by observation of long-term and short-term on stream water quality and separated runoff components from stream water by using HYCYMODEL. From January in 1998 to September in 1999, it was estimated by relationships of character of water quality and discharge for the experimental watershed in Mt. Palgong. The results were summarized as follows : 1. Annual average pH values of stream water in 1998 and in 1999 were 6.48(6.22~6.89) and 6.52(5.75~7.18), respectively. The observed annual average pH values were maintaining identical values in general, but pH values decreased continuously during the four months after thinning in the experimental watershed. So thinning is suspected of the major cause for the decrease. 2. Annual average EC values of stream water in 1998 and in 1999 were $26.69(17.95{\sim}33.5){\mu}S/cm$ and $25.19(17.5{\sim}33.8){\mu}S/cm$, respectively. The observed annual average EC values were maintaining identical values in general. 3. As a result of the comparison of average dissolved ions of rainfall and stream water, $Na^+$, $Mg^{2+}$, $Ca^{2+}$, $Cl^-$, $NO_3{^-}$, and $SO_4{^{2-}}$ showed minus values between incomings and outgoings. $Na^+$ and $NO_3{^-}$ among the dissolved ions of stream water showed the highest concentration out of cations and anions respectively. 4. By the change of pH value in stream water due to rainfall events, pH value decreased with increasing runoff as pH value increased before and after peak flow. 5. By the change of EC value in stream water due to rainfall events, EC value decreased with increasing runoff of first rainfall as EC value changed with runoff before and after peak flow. 6. As the runoff increased, the concentration of $Na^+$, $Ca^{2+}$, $K^+$, total cation, $Cl^-$, and $SO_4{^{2-}}$ in stream water lowered. On the other hand, the runoff decreased, their concentration in stream water tended to get high. But in terms of $NO_3{^-}$ and total anion, they turned out vice versa. $Mg^{2+}$ produced no reaction. 7. The base flow among runoff components separated by using HYCYMODEL influenced greatly on pH, EC, concentration of cation and anion.

  • Seoul Metropolitan Rapid Transit Corporation has 148's stations. Total length is 152km and most of the station is located in the basement and Groundwater occur inflow of 700,000 tons per day. Groundwater is treated as a natural flow way instead of artificial ways. Therefore, most of the collection wells is located in the low place or station for the efficient induction and collecting water. Manhole overtopping is occurring frequently because groundwater is concentrated in the drain pipe near the collecting well and heavy rainfall in summer. As a result, ballast contamination and radon levels are increased in tunnel. This paper introduces a solution is increasing overflow in tunnel, which introduces drainage system of non-motorized that uses differencial head between collecting well and manhole.

  • This study is aimed at the development of a runoff forecasting model to solve the uncertainties occurring in the process of rainfall-runoff modeling and improve the modeling accuracy of the stream runoff forecasting, The study area is the downstream of Naeseung-chun. Therefore, time-dependent data was obtained from the Wolpo water level gauging station. 11 and 2 out of total 13 flood events were selected for the training and testing set of model. The model performance was improved as the measuring time interval$(T_m)$ was smaller than the sampling time interval$(T_s)$. The Neuro-Fuzzy(NF) and TANK models can give more accurate runoff forecasts up to 4 hours ahead than the Feed Forward Multilayer Neural Network(FFNN) model in standard above the Determination coefficient$(R^2)$ 0.7.

  • Airborne and waterborne ascospores and conidia of Botryosphaeria dothidea were collected in apple orchards at Suwon and Chunan in 1992 through 1994. Both waterborne and airborne spores were first detected in mid April to early May. Thereafter, spores were abundant in early June to late August and present until early December. Rainwater collections contained much more conidia than ascospores during the apple growing seasons. Airborne ascospores catches, which were also detected on humid days without measurable rainfall, were much more than airborne conidia catches. High amounts of ascospores were detected in early times of apple growing season, whereas most conidia catches occurred in later times of the season. The number of waterborne conidia and airborne ascospores was positively correlated with mean daily maximum, minimum, and average air temperatures during the trapping periods (p=0.01). However, no significant correlation was found between the number of spores and the total precipitation during the trapping periods.

  • Korea Peninsula consists of approximately 70% of mountainous terrain of total area, in addition, annual average rainfall is plentiful, especially during rainy season of summer, and it is often accompanied with typhoon and heavy rain, which results in frequent landslides. Since there are limitations with existing methods to analyze extensive disasters, it is necessary to develop new remote sensing technology using an artificial satellite to study on landslides closely. This paper is written in order to establish the database with map information on various landslides using GIS, furthermore, to analyze precariousness of the areas, which are susceptible to landslide, and risks of potential areas in consideration of heavy rain, based on land-cover classification derived from images from satellite.

  • Storage method is one of major measures for reduction of CSOs pollutant loads and several projects have been done nationwide. But systematic analysis of intercepting capacity has not been studied to determine optimum size of storage facility. In this research, not only storage volume but also intercepting capacity which means flow capacity from intercepting facility to CSOs storage facility was studied and optimum sizing method for storage facility was proposed. The result shows that pollutants reduction efficiency can be increased significantly by increasing intercepting capacity and it might reduce storage volume and total construction costs. Intercepting capacity for the study area was evaluated and it was shown as equivalent to 83 % probability rainfall intensity.

  • Temporal distributions and characteristics of PWV (Precipitable Water Vapor) and LWP (Liquid Water Path) are investigated by using the microwave radiometric profiler at Haenam NCIO from 1 August 2007 to 31 July 2008. Temporal variations of PWV are closely connected with the thermal response of water vapor in atmosphere. The variations of LWP are characterized by the rainfall variation being basically attributable to the heavy rain-bearing clouds. The frequency distributions of PWV and LWP according to the four sky conditions ('clear', 'lightly cloudy', 'cloudy', and 'deeply cloudy') by total cloud amount at Wando Observatory corresponds with a change of slope in cumulative distribution function for PWV and LWP. There results implies that the classification of sky condition can be applied by using the distribution of PWV and LWP from microwave radiometric profiler.

  • The objective of this study is to identify whether or not the ground water level is decreasing. We suggest a method of estimating the change in groundwater level using newly developed groundwater pumping station data. The Goseong area located in Gyeongnam province was selected considering three factors. First, this area demands relatively large amount of irrigation water because most of the land is used as a paddy field and the proportion of the paddy field within total arable land is increasing. Second, groundwater level data in nearby area are available since these are monitored by Water Management Information System (WAMIS). Third, many groundwater pumping stations have been developed in this area in order to overcome droughts thus detail information for pumping stations are available. Regression results indicate groundwater level has been decreased for over 20 years. This decreasing trend is due to the shortage of surface irrigation water which was caused by the decrease in rainfall.

  • Characteristics of precipitation in Seoul have been examined by using long-term observational data. Precipitation records from modern rain gauges were used for 1908-1996, together with the traditional Korean rain gauge (called Chukwookee) observations for 1777-1907. A linear trend analysis of seasonal total rainfall shows no significant trends over the last 200 years A wavelet transform analysis was performed to figure out the transient variations of precipitation.
