  • Objective: This study was conducted to investigate the lipid-lowering effect and safety of Daeshiho-tang in patients with uncontrolled lipid levels by statins. Methods: We investigated patients who had an abnormal lipid profile even when taking statins and who were administered Daeshiho-tang at Kyung-Hee University Korean Medical Hospital for at least one day between January 2008 and December 2018. Their basal characteristics and examinations were reviewed retrospectively with respect to lipid profile, AST, ALT, GGT, BUN, and creatinine. The lipid profile was composed of total cholesterol, triglyceride, LDL-cholesterol, and HDL-cholesterol. Subgroup analysis was performed on each component of dyslipidemia. Results: Among 20 participants, there were 10 males and 10 females. The mean BMI was 23.52. Eighty five percent of the participants were diagnosed as having cerebral infarction. After the administration of Daeshiho-tang, total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol were significantly reduced, to 41.3 mg/dl and 33.95 mg/dl, respectively. In subgroup analyses, total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol were significantly decreased, to 63 mg/dl and 54.6 mg/dl, respectively. Liver and kidney function showed no significant difference after taking Daeshiho-tang. Conclusions: Daeshiho-tang as a decoction or powder had significant lipid-lowering effects on total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol in patients with dyslipidemia. The lipid-lowering effect on total and LDL cholesterol increased in patients with hypercholesterolemia and hyper-LDL-cholesterolemia, respectively. Based on the minimal changes in the liver and kidney function test, Daeshiho-tang would be safe enough to be used in clinics.

  • This study was performed to investigate the influence of dietray food from the three CHinese medicinal herbs(Mugwort, Dried organge peel and Duchung) on lipi d metabolism in rats. Male rats of Sprague-Dawley strain were divided into four dietary groups(Cellulose (CL), Mugwort(MW), Dried organge peel9OP), Duchung(DC)) after three weeks of hyperlipidemic dieting and were fed ad libitum each of the experimental diets for six weeks. The fiber sources of the experimental diets were prepared by drying and milling mugwort, orange peel, duchung and cellulose. Each of the Fiber sources was mixed into the diet to achieve 10g% levels of total dietary fiber. Levels of apparent fat absorption exhibited a significant decrease in the MW and DC groups. The OP group also showed a decreasing trend, but to a lesser extent. The levels of serum total lipid were not significantly different among the four experimental groups. Total serum cholesterol levels were significantly lower in the OP grop that in both the CM and MW group. Serum TG and LDL-cholesterol levels were significantly higher in the DL group than other groups. Serum HDL-cholesterol levels were significantly levels were significantly lower in the CL group than in the other groups. Total lipid and total cholesterol in liver were significantly higher in the CL group than in the other groups. Total lipid and total cholesterol in feces displayed a significantly increase in the MW and DC groups when compared with the CL group. The OP group also showed an increase compared to the CL group.

  • In this study, total lipid and cholesterol contents and fatty acid composition of colostrum milk obtained from 30 normal mothers, 10 mothers who was delivered of preterm infant and 8 pregnancy induced hypertensive mothers were analyzed. While total cholesterol content in preterm colostrum was significantly lower than other groups (p<0.05), total lipid content was not different among three groups, ranged 2.24-.2.2g/dl. Composition of saturated fatty acide, such as lauric acid and myristic acid which are medium chain fatty acids in preterm milk were higher than those of normal-term and hypertensive mother's milk. There was no difference n total composition of polyunsaturated fatty acids and the rationh of $\omega$6/$\omega$3 among 3 group mother's colostrum, ranged 19.45-21.45% and 6.42-7.87, respectively. but the composition of arachidonic acid and DHA in colostrum of hypertensive mothers were significantly higher than those of normal and preterm mothers. These data indicates that gestational length and complications during pregnancy may change the lipid profile and fatty acid composition of hyman milk colosstrum.

  • The lactose, total nitrogen and total lipid contents of human breast milk were determined longitudinally after protein and term deliveries. Milk samples were obtained from day 2 to 5, on weeks 1, 2, 4, and 6 after preform (PM : n = 24) and term (TM : n = 22) deliveries. The lactose contents of PM and TM increased from 5.28 g/dl and 5.93 g/dl at days 2 to 5, to 7.95 g/dl,7.87 g/dl at 6 weeks, respectively. The total nitrogen contents of PM and TM decreased significantly during the first 6 weeks after birth (from 374 to 220 mg/dl versus 382 to 220 mg/dl respectively). However the total lipid contents of the PM and TM increased during the same periods. Significant differences in the total lipid contents between the PM and TM were 2.15 versus 3.27 g/dl at 2 weeks, and 3.26 versus 2.52 g/dl at 6 weeks, respectively. The energy intakes of preform infants was 134.8 ㎉/kg/d during the 6 weeks of lactation, which satisfied with energy requirements (85-130 ㎉/kg/d) of the preform infants. • This study was performed to investigate the effects of Korean native plant diets on lipid and cadmium (Cd) metabolisms and also antioxidative enzyme activities in rats. Seventy male Sprague-Dawley rats weighing 210.3$\pm$2.7g were blocked into ten groups according to body weight. Rats were raised for four weeks with diets containing 0 or 0.04%(w/w) cadmium chloride and 5%(w/w) plant powder-Ssook(Artemisia princeps var. orientalis HARA), Chamchwi(Aster scaber THUNB), Gomchwi(Lingularia fischeri TUBCZ). or Solbeerum (Portulaca oleracea LINNE). Food intake, weight gain, food efficiency ratio, and weights of liver, kidney, spleen and epididymal fat were significantly lower in Cd-exposed groups, food efficiency ratio, and weights of liver, kidney, spleen and epididymal fat were significanlty lower in Cd-exposed groups. Plasma total lipid level, liver total lipid, cholesterol and triglycerde concentrations, and fecal total lipid, cholesterol and triglyceride excretions were decreased by Cd administration. Total lipid and triglyceride concentration in plasma and liver were lower in Chamchwi groups together with increased fecal total lipid and triglyceride excretions. Cholesterol concentration in plasma and liver were lower in Gomchwi groups with increased fecal cholesterol excretions. Activities of red-blood-cell superoxide dismutase(SOD), and liver catalase, SOD and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-px) were decreased significantly by Cd administration. Thiobarbituric acid reactive substance(TBARS) concentrations of plasma and liver were increased by Cd administration. Thiobarbituric acid reactive substance(TBARS) concentration of plasma and liver were increased by Cd administration. Administration of plant diets decreased plasma and liver catalase, SOD and GSH-px activities in Cd-free diet groups and increased them in Cd-administered groups. Plasma and liver TBARS concentrations were decreased in animals fed plant diets, with Chamchwi showing the most effective antioxidative capacity. The concentration of Cd accumulated in blood and tissue decreased in Cd-exposed groups fed plant diets. Liver Cd concentration were lower in the Chamchwi and Gomchwi groups, and kidney Cd levels were lower in the Ssook and Chamchwi groups. Among them, Chamchwi was the most effective in Cd detoxification. In conclusion, Chamchwi and Gomchwi were effective in lowering tissue lipid levels, with Chamchwi having the greatest antioxidative and detoxifying effects.

  • Pastirma is a dry-cured meat product, produced from whole beef or water buffalo muscles. This study was carried out to investigate the effect of production stages (raw meat, after curing, after $2^{nd}$ drying and pastirma) on the total lipid, neutral lipid, phospholipid and fatty acid composition of phospholipid fraction of pastirma produced from beef M. Longissimus dorsi muscles. The pH and colour ($L^*$, $a^*$ and $b^*$) analyses were also performed in raw meat and pastirma. It was found that pastirma production stages had significant effects (p<0.01) on the total amounts of lipid, neutral lipid and phospholipid, and the highest amounts of lipid, neutral lipid and phospholipid were detected in pastirma. In pastirma, neutral lipid ratio was determined as $79.33{\pm}2.06%$ and phospholipid ratio as $20.67{\pm}2.06%$. Phospholipids was proportionately lower in pastirma than raw meat. Pastirma production stages affected pentadecanoic acid (15:1) (p<0.01), linoleic acid (18:2n-6) (p<0.05), ${\gamma}-linoleic$ acid (18:3n-6) (p<0.05), erucic acid (22:1n-9) (p<0.05), docosapentaenoic acid (22:5n-6) (p<0.05), total unsaturated fatty acid (${\Sigma}USFA$) (p<0.05) and total saturated fatty acid (${\Sigma}SFA$) (p<0.05) ratios of phospholipid fraction and also the moisture content (p<0.01). Pastirma process also affected pH and colour ($L^*$, $a^*$ and $b^*$) values (p<0.01), and these values were higher in pastirma than raw meat.

  • Lipid consumption in early life has been implicated with arteriosclerosis in later life. It has been also claimed that lipid contents of serum in early life would reflect coronary atherosclerosis in later life. Present study has been undertaken to look for serum lipid contents of mother and newborn simultaneously to determine the difference of various lipid classes. Lipids were extracted by Folch method. Total lipid was determined gravimetrically; cholesterol by Zak's method, phospholipids by Fiske-Subba-Row's method, and triglycerides by Sugiura's method. Fatty acids were analysed by gas liguid chromatography. Values of the total lipids of mother was significantly higher than those of newborn. HDI-cholesterol/total cholesterol ratio of newborn's was higher than mother's. The amount of saturated fatty acids in the serum cholesteryl ester of newborn was significantly higher than mother's.

  • The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of L-carnitine on the components of serum and liver and the effects on the anti-oxidant system. For this purpose, five experimental groups were setup. For fat source, perilla oil enough with unsaturated fatty acid and beeftallow enough with saturated fatty acid were supplemented together with L-carnitine to the rats. Five experimental groups kept eight Sprague-Dawley rats respectively, They were co group supplemented with basic diet or AIN-93, PO group supplemented with perilla oil, POC group supplemented with perilla oil and L-carnitine, BT group supplemented with beeftallow, and BTC group supplemented with beeftallow and L- carnitine. The results are. 1) Weight gain, food intake and FER were not different significantly among the experimental groups. 2) Significant difference was observed in serum total lipid(P<0.05), serum triglyceride(P<0.05), serum total cholesterol (P<0.05)and serum LDL cholesterol(P<0.05). Serum total lipid and serum triglyceride were significantly low in the groups supplemented with L-carnitine. Serum total cholesterol showed difference with the supplementation of L-carnitine in BTC only. LDL cholesterol showed no significant difference with the supplementation of L-carnatine, but total values of LDL-cholesterol were high in groups supplemented with beeftallow. 3) Total cholesterol in liver was low in POC group with the supplementation of L-carnitine however, there was no difference in BTC group with the supplementation of L-carnitine. In summary, dietary L-carnitine did not influence the weight gain, food intake and food efficiency ratio among the experimental groups, but had an effect of lowering the serum total lipid and triglyceride significantly in both groups which were supplemented with L-carnitine. The effect of lowering of sew total cholesterol with the supplementation of L-carnitine in beeftallow group(BTC) only. The effect of lowering of liver total cholesterol with the supplementation of L-carnitine in perilla oil group(POC) only.
