Baker's yeast was disrupted in a 1.4-L stainless steel horizontal bead mill under a continuous recycle mode using 0.3 mm diameter zirconia beads as abrasive. A single pass in continuous mode bead mill operation liberates half of the maximally released protein. The maximum total protein release can only be achieved after passaging the cells 5 times through the disruption chamber. The degree of cell disruption was increased with the increase in feeding rate, but the total protein release was highest at the middle range of feeding rate (45 L/h). The total protein release was increased with an increase in biomass concentration from 10 to $50\%$(w/v). However, higher heat dissipation as a result of high viscosity of concentrated biomass led to the denaturation of labile protein such as glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PDH). As a result the highest specific activity of G6PDH was achieved at biomass concentration of $20\%$(ww/v). Generally, the degree of cell disruption and total protein released were increased with an increase in impeller tip speed, but the specific activity of G6PDH was decreased substantially at higher impeller tip speed (14 m/s). Both the degree of cell disruption and total protein release increased, as the bead loading increased from 75 to $85\% (v/v)$. Hence, in order to obtain a higher yield of labile protein such as G6PDH, the yeast cell should not be disrupted at biomass concentration and impeller tip speed higher than $20\%(w/v)$ and 10 m/s, respectively.

Characteristics of heat release process, while the Wigner energy was drawn off the graphite during DSC(Differential Scanning Calorimenter) measurement as an example of annealing process which is one of release methods of Wigner energy that is contained in the irradiated graphite, was studied. Linear temperature rise method in DSC operation was selected to estimate the total Wigner energy content and the heat release rate of each graphite samples, which were located in several positions in the thermal column in KRR-2 research reactor. As an annealing process in DSC operation Wigner energy of the irradiated graphite samples were totally released by heat supplying to the graphite from room temperature to $500^{\circ}C$, in DSC. Characteristics of Wigner energy release from the graphite sample was well correlated with the various activation energy model of the kinetic equation.
The blends of waste-polyethylene (W-PE)/waste-ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer (W-EVA) with inorganic and phosphorous flame retardants (i.e., aluminium hydroxide, magnesium hydroxide, and so on) were prepared by melt mixing techniques at different compositions and foamed. The flame retardancy and foaming properties of the blends, limiting oxygen index (LOI), heat release rate (HRR), carbon monoxide yield (COY), total heat release (THR), effective heat of combustion (EHC), expandability and cell structure were investigated using cone calorimeter, SEM, LOI tester and polarizing microscope. When the composition ratios of the W-PE/W-EVA blends were 50/50 (w/w), and the ranges of the flame retardants contents were $175{\sim}220 phr$, we could obtain foams with the uniform and closed cell, high expandability (1900 % or more), high LOI, and low HRR values. These results depend on crosslinking and loaming conditions, a char formation and smoke suppressing effect. Aluminium hydroxide had more effect in the increase of LOI than magnesium hydroxide, while magnesium hydroxide considerably affected the decrease of HRR and COY.
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the fire srpead risk of building exterior and roofing materials due to the firebrand of forest fire occurring in the urban areas. Method: In order to achieve this research purpose, by selecting building materials used for exterior and roofing materials of buildings, the time to ignition, total heat release, and heat release rate were investigated, and a forest fire firebrand system was established to the possibility of fire spread was confirmed. Result: As a result of the cone calorimeter test, the roofing material had a similar or faster ignition time due to radiant heat compared to the exterior material with the steel plate exposed to the outside, and showed a higher heat release rate and total heat release than the exterior material. Although it was affected by the flammable material, it was confirmed that it did not spread easily due to the limited amount of combustible material, and carbonization marks appeared inside. Conclusion: The cone calorimeter test method has been shown to be useful in understanding the combustion characteristics of building materials by radiant heat, but the fire spread due to a firebrand in a forest fire is directly affected by the flame due to the ignition of surrounding combustibles, so finding a direct correlation with the cone calorimeter method is difficult. It is judged that the roof material may be more vulnerable to the spread of fire due to the fire than the exterior material.
VOCs from the heat recovery ventilation system (total heat exchanger) are measured in this study. Two different types of element (L and M type) from heat recovery ventilating system are tested to study the intial release characteristics of VOCs under KS cooling and heating standard conditions. VOCs are measured for the various flow rates and different operating times. Considering errors in the test method and the measuring instrument, the tested heat recovery ventilating systems was found to release 6 major VOCs, such as acetic acid, 2-butanone (MEK), 2-(methylthio )ethylamine, toluene, styrene, and x-acids (Ion 57). The concentrations of released VOCs are not quite much affected by operating conditions. The results show much larger VOCs concentrations in the cooling mode than in the heating mode, due to the high operating temperatures.
This study evaluated the thermoregulatory properties of functional thermal underwear ('heating underwear') in markets using a thermal manikin and human wear trials. One ordinary thermal underwear (ORD) and two functional thermal underwear (HEAT1 and HEAT2; manufactured goods, HEAT1: moisture absorbing heat release mechanism, HEAT2: heat storage, release mechanism) were chosen. Thermo-physiological and subjective responses were evaluated at an air temperature of $5.0{\pm}0.5^{\circ}C$ and air humidity of $30{\pm}5%RH$ with five male subjects ($21.6{\pm}1.3yr$ in age, $178.0{\pm}5.9cm$ in height, $68.2{\pm}5.9kg$ in body mass). Experimental conditions consisted of four ensembles that included winter clothes (Control: no underwear, ORD, HEAT1, HEAT2). Water-vapor resistance was greater in fabric of HEAT1 than others. The results were: 1) Total thermal insulation (IT) using a thermal manikin were not greater for HEAT1 (0.860clo) and HEAT 2 (0.873clo) than for ORD (0.886clo). 2) There were no significant differences in rectal temperature, mean skin temperature, heart rate and total body mass loss between the four conditions. Microclimate clothing temperature on the back was greater for ORD than for HEAT1 and HEAT2. Subjects felt more comfortable with HEAT1 than for others at rest. HEAT2 was higher in microclimate humidity when compared to other conditions. The results suggest that thermoregulatory properties of 'heating underwear' in market did not differ from those of ordinary thermal underwear in terms of total thermal insulation and thermoregulatory responses in a cold environment.
This study is an analysis of combustion characteristics of synthetic insulation materials such as houses and warehouses. Using combustion cone calorimeter and SEM, the researching has experimented combustion characteristics of four kinds of materials such as flame retardant styrofoam, general styrofoam, urethane and gypsum board. And analyzed. As a result of the test, the ignition time (TTI) for the thermal insulation material was found at 27 s~43 s, and the flame retardant styrofoam was ignited at the lowest TTI at 27 s and disappears at 28 s. In addition, the maximum heat release rate (peak HRR) and average heat release rate (mean HRR) of each material were expressed in the following order: urethane> flame retardant styrofoam> styrofoam> gypsum board. Also, the total smoke release ($m^2/m^2$) was the largest at $30.798m^2/m^2$ in flame-retardant styrofoam. The general CO concentration of styrofoam was 0.275 kg/kg and the emission concentration was 12.807 kg/kg. The residues showed the highest 0.029 g in the gypsum board among the above materials.
This study was performed to test the combustive properties of Pinus rigida specimens treated with phosphorus (P) and nitrogen (N) additives. Each Pinus rigida specimen was painted three times with 15 wt% P-N additive solutions at room temperature. After drying the treated specimens, the combustion properties were examined using a cone calorimeter (ISO 5660-1). The time to ignition (TTI) for the treated specimens was 90 to 148 s except for the specimen treated with PP/$4NH_4^+$, and the time to flameout (TF) was 556 to 633 s, which was longer than that of virgin plate. While the The specimens treated with P-N additives showed 12.5 to 43.4% higher mean heat release rate ($HRR_{mean}$) and 11.8 to 43.1% higher total heat release (THR) than virgin plate. The effective heat of combustion (EHC) was by 2.9 to 17.5% lower than that of virgin plate. It can thus be concluded that the combustion-retardation properties were partially improved compared to those of virgin plate.
The present study has been conducted to investigate the fire combustion properties and fire behavior of an IEEE-383 qualified flame retardant cable. The reference reaction rate and reference temperature which are commonly used in pyrolysis model of fire propagation process was obtained by the thermo-gravimetric analysis of the cable component materials. The mass fraction of FR-PVC sheath abruptly decreased near temperature range of $250{\sim}260^{\circ}C$ and its maximum reaction rate was about $2.58{\times}10^{-3}$[1/s]. For the XLPE insulation of the cable, the temperature causing maximum mass fraction change was ranged about $380{\sim}390^{\circ}C$ and it has reached to the maximum reaction rate of $5.10{\times}10^{-3}$[1/s]. The flame retardant cable was burned by a pilot flame meker buner and the burning behavior of the cable was observed during the fire test. Heat release rate of the flame retardant cable was measured by a laboratory scale oxygen consumption calorimeter and the mass loss rate of the cable was calculated by the measured cable mass during the burning test. The representative value of the effective heat of combustion was evaluated by the total released energy integrated by the measured heat release rate and burned mass. This study can contribute to study the electric cable fire and provide the pyrolysis properties for the computational modeling.

Biomass burning is a source of greenhouse gases, carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide. Under the ideal conditions of complete combustion, the burning of biomass produces carbon dioxide and water vapor. Since complete combustion is not achieved under any conditions of biomass burning, other carbon species, including carbon monoxide, methane, non-methane hydrocarbons and particulate carbon are produced. In this study, we analyze the combustion characteristics of rice-husk, such as heat release rate, smoke production rate, the percentage variation of CO and $CO_2$, oxygen consumption rate, and mass loss under different heat fluxes (20, 50 and 70kW). As a result, at 20kW incomplete combustion is occurred so that the percentage of CO is high in initial burning and total smoke release is higher than the others. At 50kW and 70kW, the combustion behaviors is very similar except the variation of CO percentage.
