  • In this study, Chemical Oxygen Demand(COD) which is the measure of organic substances, Total nitrogen(T-N), Total phosphorous(T-P), Fe and Mn were analyzed in the sediments of dam reservoir. The purpose of this study were to understand the relevances among the analytical methods adopted and the applicabilities of those methods. For the determination of COD, Standard Method for the Examination of Marine Environment(SMEME) and Standard Method for the Examination of Sanitary(SMES) was used. Both method had wide dynamic range and the deviations of the values obtained by two methods were small because $KMnO_4$ method closely reflected BOD and organic substances. For the determination of T-N and T-P, Standard Method for the Examination of Food(SMEF) and Standard Method for the Examination of Sanitary(SMES) were used. Two methods for T-N were both the acid-base titration but SMES gave less T-N values than SMEF because of the differences in digestion and distillation steps. Two methods for T-P gave the comparable values after acid digestion of $HNO_3$ and $HClO_4$. The determination of heavy metals as a Fe, Mn was mainly divided to the leaching method and acid digestion method. The values obtained by leaching method were less than those by digestion method. It is thought that the condition of acid digestion was more severe than that of leaching method.

  • Measures against non-point sources pollution in Saemangeum watershed should be established to control water quality of Saemangeum lake, because non-point sources pollution discharge portions of BOD (Biological Oxygen Demand) and TP (Total Phosphorous) in the watershed were 68.4 and 61.4%, respectively. In this study, target regions for the non-point sources pollution control were selected to apply BMP (Best Management Practices) for the agricultural area of Saemanguem watershed in terms of TP that caused eutrophication at the lake. Target regions were selected by the NPSI (Non-point source index) that was calculated by the total 12 indexes at the steps of non-point source production, emission and outflow. Weights of the indexes were determined by the watershed management experts oriented AHP (Analytic Hierarchy Process) analysis. The target region was selected at the unit of Korean basic administrative district 'Dong/Li'. At the results of NPSI calculations through the GIS (Geographical Information System) tools, two sets of 5 regions were selected in the Man-kyung River and Dong-gin River. The main reason for the selected target regions was livestock activity in the district. The results of this study can be useful for implementing the reduction projects of agricultural non-point sources pollution to control water quality in Saemangeum lake.

  • Dredged material during Masan Bay cleaning in 1990-1994 was deposited in Gapo area. The site provides an ideal experimental condition to monitor environmental remediation and benthic ecosystem stabilization processes after the disturbance. Sea water samples were taken during one tidal cycle in one hour interval from Oct. 2001 to Apr. 2002 (4 times) to estimate the organic matter and nutrient fluxes in Gapo area. Hourly material fluxes were estimated from the water balance estimated from 3 dimensional topography of Gapo area and from material concentration. Net material fluxes were estimated from the difference between total influx and total outflux during one tidal cycle. Chemical oxygen demand showed net outflux in Nov. 2001, Dec. 2001 and Apr. 2002 (2.2∼3.9 g m$\^$-2/ h$\^$-1/) and showed net influx in Mar. 2002 (1.4 g m$\^$-2/ h$\^$-1/). Ammonium showed net outflux during the study (0.1∼118 mg m$\^$-2/ h$\^$-1/m-2h-I). According to this investigation, Gapo area was a source rather than a sink of organic matter. However, the variability of the material fluxes was high so that a long term study may be required.

  • Spatial and temporal analysis of water quality was performed for eleven monitoring stations in Dongjin River watershed in order to determine the trends of monthly water quality. The monthly water quality data of biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) during $1995{\sim}2004$, were analyzed utilizing Seasonal Mann-Kendall test, LOWESS and three-dimensional graphic approaches. The results indicated that BOD and TN concentrations had the downward trend, but TP showed the upward trend, especially in Gobucheon. This numerical and graphic analysis is the useful tool to analyze the long-term trend of water quality in a large river system.

  • This study aimed to quantitatively analyze the trends in environmental research that utilize environmental geospatial information through text mining, one of the big data analysis technologies. The analysis was conducted on a total of 869 papers published in the Republic of Korea, which were collected from the National Digital Science Library (NDSL). On the basis of the classification scheme, the keywords extracted from the papers were recategorized into 10 environmental fields including "general environment", "climate", "air quality", and 20 environmental geospatial information fields including "satellite image", "numerical map", and "disaster". With the recategorized keywords, their frequency levels and time series changes in the collected papers were analyzed, as well as the association rules between keywords. First, the results of frequency analysis showed that "general environment"(40.85%) and "satellite image"(24.87%) had the highest frequency levels among environmental fields and environmental geospatial information fields, respectively. Second, the results of the time series analysis on environmental fields showed that the share of "climate" between 1996 and 2000 was high, but since 2001, that of "general environment" has increased. In terms of environmental geospatial information fields, the demand for "satellite image" was highest throughout the period analyzed, and its utilization share has also gradually increased. Third, a total of 80 correlation rules were generated for environmental fields and environmental geospatial information fields. Among environmental fields, "general environment" generated the highest number of correlation rules (17) with environmental geospatial information fields such as "satellite image" and "digital map".

  • This study investigated the change of the achievement rate of the target water quality conditioned on the occurrence of severe drought, to assess the effects of meteorological drought on the water quality management in the Nakdong River basin. Using three drought indices with difference time scales such as 30-, 60-, 90-day, i.e., SPI30, SPI60, SPI90, and three water quality indicators such as biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), total organic carbon (TOC), and total phosphorus (T-P), we first analyzed the relationship between severe drought occurrence water quality change in mid-sized watersheds, and identified the watersheds in which water quality was highly affected by severe drought. The Bayesian network models were constructed for the watersheds to probabilistically assess the relationship between severe drought and water quality management. Among 22 mid-sized watersheds in the Nakdong River basin, four watersheds, such as #2005, #2018, #2021, and #2022, had high environmental vulnerability to severe drought. In addition, severe drought affected spring and fall water quality in the watershed #2021, summer water quality in the #2005, and winter water quality in the #2022. The causal relationship between drought and water quality management is usufaul in proactive drought management.

  • Attached parking lots installation criteria is determined by use, total floor area, etc. according to the Parking Lot Act and local government ordinances. However, with traffic demand increase inconvenience about use of culture and assembly facilities have been raised. When planning number of parking lots for cultural and assembly facilities, legal parking lots and unit parking lots are used, but this causes inconvenience and traffic problems on the surrounding roads, because reality and convenience are not considered. Therefore, this study intend to present an realistic number of parking lots calculating equation for movie theater in Gwangju Metropolitan City. After investigating number of parking lots, number of screens, number of seats, total floor area, bus route and illegal parking for a cultural facility in Gwangju Metropolitan City, prediction model for calculating number of parking lots was presented using SPSS regression analysis. As a result of comparing prediction model and unit method, the prediction model was be closer actual cumulative parking space, so prediction model verification was completed. Based on the model verified in this study, Realistic number of parking lots will be installed. However, due to limitations of research on specific areas, research on various facilities should continue in consideration of regional, population, and urban characteristics

  • Recently, consumer demand for functional cosmetics containing natural ingredients has been greatly expanded. To develop the natural cosmetic materials, we selected 3 plants, Chrysanthemum zawadskii Herbich (CZ), Perilla frutescens (L.) Britton var. acuta Kudo (PF), and Rosa multiflora Thunberg (RM) which showed high total flavonoid contents (TFC), total polyphenol contents (TPC), and strong DPPH radical scavenging effect. We determined astragalin, chlorogenic acid, and rosmarinic acid as a marker compound for quantitative analysis of the content of each material and standardization of the quality standards and manufacturing standards through LC/MS analysis. HPLC-DAD was used to simultaneously analyze these marker components of three natural product complexes (Mix) and to validate the analytical method through experiments such as linearity, accuracy and precision. The detection wavelengths were set at 210, 265, and 330 nm. The detected 3 compounds from extract of CZ, PF, RM showed significant linearity ($R^2${\geq_-}$0.9947). The limit of detection (LOD) of chlorogenic acid, astragalin and rosmarinic acid were $8.29{\mu}g/ml$, $2.28{\mu}g/ml$, and $27.00{\mu}g/ml$, respectively. The limit of quantification (LOQ) of chlorogenic acid, astragalin and rosmarinic acid were $25.11{\mu}g/ml$, $6.92{\mu}g/ml$, and $81.83{\mu}g/ml$, respectively. The contents of the three indicators of Mix were 19.82-24.71 mg/g of chlorogenic acid, 43.80-46.02 mg/g of astragalin, and 46.33-48.57 mg/g of rosmarinic acid.

  • In this study, we investigated the spatial variation in land use and topographic effects on water quality at the Geum river watershed in South Korea, using the ordinary least squares(OLS) and geographically weighted regression (GWR) models. Understanding the complex interactions between land use, slope, elevation, and water quality is essential for water pollution control and watershed management. We monitored four water quality indicators -total phosphorus, total nitrogen, biochemical oxygen demand, and dissolved oxygen levels - across three land use types (urban, agricultural, and forested) and two topographic features (elevation and mean slope). Results from GWR modeling revealed that land use and topography did not affect water quality consistently through space, but instead exhibited substantial spatial non-stationarity. The GWR model performed better than the OLS model as it produced a higher adjusted $R^2$ value. Spatial variation in interactions among variables could be visualized by mapping $R^2$ values from the GWR model at fine spatial resolution. Using the GWR model, we were able to identify local pollution sources, determine habitat status, and recommend appropriate land-use planning policies for watershed management.

  • In 2019, about 134 million ㎥ of aggregate was produced in an estimated 880 quarries and pits in 17 metropolitan governments. Leading producing metropolitan cities were Gyeonggi-do, Gyeongsangnam-do, Chungcheongbuk-do, Gangwon-do, Gyeongsangbuk- do, Chungcheongnam-do, in order decreasing volume, which together accounted for about 71% of total product. Of the total domestic aggregates produced in 2019, about 31 % was sand and about 69% was gravel. It estimated that of the 134 million ㎥ of aggregates in Korea in 2019, about 50.3% was produced by screening crushed aggregate by 41.4% by forest aggregate, 3.3% by land aggregate, 1.7% by sea aggregate and 1.7% by washing each other, and 0.7% by river aggregate. This indicates that screening crushed aggregate and forest aggregate are the main producers of domestic aggregates. The most crushed and forest aggregate was extracted at the Gyeonggi-do and Gyeongsangnam-do, respectively. Land aggregate was mainly extracted at Gyeongsangbuk-do and Gangwon-do. Therefore, in the future supply and demand of aggregate resources, it is judged that there should be a primary policy direction for screening crushed and forest aggregate.
