This study was carried out to investigate the microbial characteristics of the urban air pollution in the subway stations, streets, department stores, wholesale markets, underground shopping centers, buildings, parks, houses and apartments in the Seoul and the suburbs area. Total cell count, total mold count and the presence of opportunistic pathogens(Streptococcus pneumoniae, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Aspergillus spp., Penicillium spp.) were evaluated determine the microbial air quality. Total cell count and mold count of indoor air in the houses and apartments were 2.9$\times$10$^2$-6.3$\times$10$^2$cfu/㎥ and 60-1.8$\times$10$^2$cfu/㎥, respectively, and the department stores and wholesale markets had much lower cell count than the houses and apartments. Ground level of commercial stations were 2.6 fold higher than the general subway stations, and Apergillus spp. and Penicillium spp. which could cause the bronchus and lung diseases were detected 17 sampling site out of 45. Dust were collected from the commercial facilities and houses, and total cell and mold count of the dust were 4.3$\times$10$^3$-1.7$\times$10$^{6}$ cfu/g and 2.3$\times$10$^3$-6.5 $\times$10$^4$cfu/g, respectively. Therefore the dust might be one of the main reservoir of microorganims.

The total bacteria count is significantly important factor for hygienic quality in raw milk. BactoScan FMTM and BactoCount IBCTM are the automated instruments for the determination of the total bacterial count in raw milk. They have been used after calibration by standard plate count (SPC) method in South Korea since 2000. It is necessary to re-evaluate for total bacterial counter according to the improvement of milk quality and the change of milk quality grade. Therefore, this study was evaluated the conversion mode of the two machines by SPC method. We collected 921 bulk-tank milk samples throughout the concentration range of 1,000~1,000,000 CFU/mL from June 2020 to October 2021. As a result, when compared by the SPC value, there was a slight difference in total bacterial count in BactoScan below 10,000 CFU/mL and above 200,000 CFU/mL and in BactoCount above 100,000 CFU/mL, respectively. Therefore, the conversion factor for BactoScan and the conversion equation for BactoCount were newly adjusted based on SPC value, and then the correlation coefficients (R2) was 0.85 or higher. In addition, the correlation (R2) between BactoScan and BactoCount was 0.91, which means the results were high positive correlation. These results are expected to contribute to improving the accuracy of the automated instruments for determining of total bacterial count in raw milk.
Microflora in 14 breast-fed(BF) and 15 formula-fed(FF) infants were investigated before (2-3 months after birth) and after weaning (5-7 months birth) to find the floral differences between the two lactation groups and the floral changes after weaning. Bifidolbacteria showed the highest count among the species of microflora in the BF group before and after weaning, but in the FF group, streptococci showed the highest count before weaning and bifidobacteria after weaning. Before weaning , the count of bifidobacteria, lactobacilli and total acaerobes were significantly higher in the BF group than in the FF. However, the frequencies of clostridia and klesidella , along with the counts of streptococci and eubacteria, were higher in the FF group. After weaning , the only difference was that the total count of aerobic bacteria was higher in the BF group. The counts of streptococci in the BF group and lactobacilli and total anaerobes in the FF group after weaning were significantly higher than before weaning. However, the count of total aerobes in the FF group after weaning was significantly lower than the count before weaning.

Objectives : This study was aimed to evaluate the correlation between changes in disease severity and serum total IgE or eosinophil count in individual patients of atopic dermatitis depending on the change of severity. Methods : We performed a retrospective chart review of 8 cases of atopic dermatitis who underwent blood tests more than five times. Disease severity was assessed by objective SCORing of Atopic Dermatitis index (OSI). Blood tests include serum total IgE, eosinophil counts, aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), blood urea nitrogen (BUN) and serum creatinine (SCr). In each subject, on the day that the blood test was performed, OSI was also assesed by a same physician. Correlation between OSI and total IgE or eosinophil count was analysed by nonparametric correlation analysis. Results : There was a statistically significant positive correlation between OSI and total IgE in three cases and a positive correlation between OSI and eosinophil count in two cases. In other three cases, there were no significant correlation. There were no cases that OSI correlated with total IgE and eosinophil count at the same time. In all cases, AST, ALT, BUN and SCr were stable. Conclusions : We suggest that total IgE and eosinophil count may reflect the severity of atopic dermatitis differently in individual patients. We also suggest that total IgE and eosinophil counts may be used as biomarkers to predict the severity of atopic dermatitis in some patients depending on the underlying pathology.
Purpose : We intended to find out how the red cell transfusion would change the white cell count in preterm neonates under treatment in the intensive care unit. We also speculated whether the magnitude of such a change could indicate a potential neonatal infection. Methods : Total white blood cell count, total neutrophil count, and band count were compared and analyzed retrospectively on 33 preterm neonates who received red cell transfusions in our hospital's intensive care unit over a period of two years and a month. Results : We found a mean change of $1.33{\times}10^3/mm^3$ and $0.55{\times}10^3/mm^3$ in total white blood cell count and total neutrophil count in the first eight hours following the red cell transfusion. No significant change was observed in band count between pre and post-red cell transfusion. Conclusion : A mild increase in the white blood cell count caused by an increase in neutrophil count was observed temporarily following the red cell transfusion. But the white blood cell count returned to the pre-transfusion level in about 24 hours, indicating that such a low level of increase cannot be interpreted as an infection of a preterm neonate.
Purpose: This study was conducted to investigate effects of Allii tuberosi Semen, Ginseng Radix Alba and Morindae officinalis Radix extract on reproductive capacities in mice. Methods: The 8-week-old ICR rats are used in the study, and we administered the extract solution of Allii tuberosi Semen, Ginseng Radix Alba and Morindae officinalis Radix concentration of 1, 10, 100mg/0.3ml to each rats and water to another rats(control group) once a day for each 30, 60, 90 and 120 days. we evaluated the total sperm count and morphology. Results: For 30 days, the total sperm count and normal sperm most increased in the group administered by 100mg/0.3ml Allii tuberosi Semen. For 60 days, the total sperm count and normal sperm most increased in the group administered by 100mg/0.3ml Morindae officinalis Radix solutions. For 90 days, the total sperm count most increased in the group asministered by 10mg/0.3ml Morindae officinalis Radix and 100mg/0.3ml Allii tuberosi Semen solutions. For 120 days, the total sperm count and normal sperm most increased in the group administered by l0mg/0.3ml Ginseng Radix Alba. Conclusion: This study shows that there were dose and duration effects of Allii tuberosi Semen, Ginseng Radix Alba and Morindae officinalis Radix extract solution on the total sperm count and morphology.
The objective of this study was to predict total bacteria count of pork meats by using the portable electronic nose systems developed throughout two stages of the prototypes. Total bacteria counts were measured for pork meats stored at $4^{\circ}C$ for 21days and compared with the signals of the electronic nose systems. PLS(Partial least square), PCR (Principal component regression), MLR (Multiple linear regression) models were developed for the prediction of total bacteria count of pork meats. The coefficient of determination ($R_p{^2}$) and root mean square error of prediction (RMSEP) for the models were 0.789 and 0.784 log CFU/g with the 1st system for the pork loin, 0.796 and 0.597 log CFU/g with the 2nd system for the pork belly, and 0.661 and 0.576 log CFU/g with the 2nd system for the pork loin respectively. The results show that the developed electronic system has potential to predict total bacteria count of pork meats.
This study was carried out to investigate the bacterial contamination of retailed beef and pork in Seoul area. For this study 44 samples were collected at butcheries and department stores from March to April, 1987 and were examined on the following items. 1. Comparison of bacterial contamination between butcheries and department stores. 2. Degree of bacterial enumeration by repair method of injured microorganisms in the frozen beef and pork. 3. Degree of bacterial contamination in the frozen beef and pork. As the result of this study, the following conclusions were obtained. 1. Difference of bacterial contamination between butcheries and department stores was not significant. 2. Enumeration of total bacterial count by solid repair procedure resulted in about 1.5-fold increase in beef and about 1.8-fold increase in port. 3. Enumeration of total coliform count by liquid repair procedure resulted in about 32.1-fold increase in beef and about 12.0-fold in pork. 4. Salmonella species were not detected, but Staphylococcus species were detected 8 cases (18.2%) in beef, 7 cases (15.9%) in pork. 5. In total bacterial count, all beef samples were lower than 10$^6$/g, but 2 pork samples were higher than 10$^6$/g. 6. The ratio of total coliform count to total bacterial count was 0.07 in beef, 0.05 in pork by standard method and 0.48 in beef, 0.25 in pork by repair method.
During April and May, 1973 rain water samples were collected five different times in nine selected areas of Seoul city. The pH factor and bacteria counts were measured. The following results were obtained. 1. The lowest pH was 6.18 at Moon Rae Dong and the highest was 6.30 at Jong Am Dong. This difference is not significant at the 0. 05 level. 2. The pH factor did not vary significantly with the time of sample collection. 3. Dae Bang Dong had the highest Total Plate Count of $1.9\times 10^3/ml$, Bo Moon Dong and An Kook Dong had the lowest Total Plate Count at $4.1\times 10^2/ml$. 4. The total plate count varied greatly according to the time of sample collection. This result can be used to remove are pollutants. 5. The Total plate Count is nearly inversely proportional to the length of time during which the sample is collected.

Background: The total and differential cell count of bronchoalveolar lavage(BAL) fluid are useful assessing activity, prognosis and response to therapy in diffuse interstitial lung disease. But controversy exist as to the appropriate method in processing BAL fluid. Therefore we investigated the effect of gauze filtration, centrifugation and different storage time of BAL fluid on the total and differential cell count. Methods: We obtained BAL fluid from 6 persons with no active lung lesion and divided pooled BAL fluid into several siliconized glass tubes and filtered through 0, 1, 2, 4 folds of cotton guaze(pore size: 1mm), and compared total cell count using hemocytometer after trypan blue staining and differential cell count after Wright-Giemsa staining of cytocentrifuged preparations. And we also counted total and differential cell count after centrifugation(400g for 30 min) and various storage time(2hr, 24hr, and 48hr). Results: There was no difference in total and differential cell count according to folds of gauze filtraion. But without gauze filtration, mucus threads that hampered total and differential cell count were found in 2 cases (33%). Centrifugation resulted in loss of total cell count($24{\pm}18%$) without change in differential cell count. There was no change in total cell count after 2hr storage but significant cell loss was found after 24hr storage time(24hr : $28{\pm}21%$, 48hr : $41{\pm}24%$). However there was no change in differential cell count with 48hr storage time. Conclusion: Total and differential cell count of BAL fluid may be best performed after cotton gauze filtration without centrifugation and within 2 hours.
