This survey was performed to investigate contamination degree and significance in each item of 406 samples of ground water, which was collected in Seoul area from Jan. to Dec. 1988. The results of this study were as follows 1. The unsuitable rate of ground water investigated was 69.7%(32.4% in only bacteria, 23.6% in both bacteria and physico-chemistry and 13.6% in only physico-chemical contamination). 2. The unsuitable rate in each item was the highest(54.2%) in standard plate countland 29.8% in coliform, 12.8% in turbidity, 11.3% in Zn, and 10.8% in Mn. 3. The total mean concentrations in each item were lower than standard except standard plate count, coliform, and Fe. 4. In the analysis of corelation, among items, both total hardness and residual solids were showed very high correlationship (P < 0.01) with other items, and both S.P.C. and coliform showed very highly significant (P < 0.01) with NH$_3$-N.
The impact of rainfall events on the sanitary indicator bacteria density of the shellfish-growing waters in Geoje Bay and Jaran Bay in Korea was investigated. The shellfish-growing area in Geoje Bay, which is a nearly closed basin, was not affected significantly, except near the stream mouth after 11.5 mm of rainfall in 1 day. However, most of the shellfish-growing water in the bay was polluted by fecal coliform bacteria after rain as heavy as 43.0 mm, and the levels of fecal indicator bacteria in some of the sea near the coast did not recover completely until 24 hours after the rainfall. By contrast, in Jaran Bay, which has no significant pollution source in the drainage area, although 9.3-490 MPN/100 mL of fecal coliform bacteria were detected near the stream mouth after rainfall of 33.5 and 81.0 mm, a very low level of the indicator bacteria was detected in the designated shellfish-growing area. During the investigation, the correlations between the sanitary indicator bacteria density and physical parameters, such as salinity and turbidity, were evaluated. Both the total coliform and fecal coliform densities were inversely correlated with salinity. Turbidity was positively correlated with the indicator bacteria density. The survey results suggest that for more efficient management of the shellfish-growing areas located in coastal areas, such as shellfish harvesting after rainfall, a detailed investigation of the effects of rainfall on the bacterial water quality in each growing area is needed.

This study was performed for the purpose of monitoring monthly levels of two pathogenic microorganisms, Cryptosporidium and Giardia, from November 2005 to August 2007 in Sangsa Lake. Water temperatures, pH and DO fluctuated seasonally at the study site. Annual mean values of BOD, COD and SS were $0.8\;mg\;L^{-1}$, $2.3\;mg\;L^{-1}$ and $1.9\;mg\;L^{-1}$ respectively. Although there was distinct seasonal variation in water chemistry and chlorophyll $\underline{a}$ concentration, the lake generally contains low concentrations of nutrients and chlorophyll $\underline{a}$. The relative abundance of coliform bacteria was always greater than that of fecal coliform. The fecal coliform bacteria comprised $8.5{\sim}22.1%$ of total coliform bacteria. Seasonal analysis of Cryptosporidium and Giardia levels in the study site showed that in winter (November through February), Cryptosporidium oocysts and Giardia cysts were most abundant ($1.1{\sim}1.8\;{\times}\;10\;cells\;L^{-1}$ and $3.8{\sim}5.1\;{\times}\;10\;cells\;L^{-1}$, respectively), while in summer (July through September) the abundance was lowest ($0.0{\sim}0.3\;{\times}\;10\;cells\;L^{-1}$ and $0.9{\sim}2.9\;{\times}\;10\;cells\;L^{-1}$, respectively). Molecular identification revealed two subtypes of Cyrptosporidium parvum in Sangsa Lake.
In order to find a way to reduce histamine formation when storing salted mackerel at home, a series of experiments were carried to monitor the time-related changes of histamine content, total aerobic bacteria and coliform quality of mackerel marketed in Incheon by the type of storage containers (clean, zipper and vacuum bag) during storage at $4^{\circ}C$, $24^{\circ}C$ and $-20^{\circ}C$ for 10 days. Histamine formation was continuously increased with passing time during storage at $4^{\circ}C$, whereas it was decreased after 3 days during storage at $24^{\circ}C$. The initial value of histamine was maintained during storage at $-20^{\circ}C$ for 10 days. During storage at $4^{\circ}C$, total aerobic bacteria and coliform showed a tendency to increased rapidly till 3day and then decreased gradually. The formation of histamine was increased in the order of vacuum bag$4^{\circ}C$.

School meals are prepared based using the HACCP system, which is designed to ensure the physical and mental health of students. However, operational recommendations in school cafeterias have changed due to COVID-19 and include delays in serving time to restrict the number of meals and the installation of screens to prevent droplet transmission. Unfortunately, these changes may have detrimentally affected hygiene practices and generated new food poisoning sources. This study aimed to determine the hygiene state of school cafeterias in the Gyeongnam area from December 2020 to September 2021 based on the monitoring of total aerobic and coliform bacteria. Kitchen floors were the most contaminated areas with an average number of total aerobic bacteria of 4.3 log CFU/100 cm2, whereas counts in dining areas were relatively low at 0.1~3.5 log CFU/100 cm2. Newly installed partitioned areas had the lowest contamination level of 0.1~2.8 log CFU/100 cm2. Escherichia coli was not detected on any surface, while coliform was detected on workbenches and floors. In conclusion, hygienic practices appear to have been adequately managed in school cafeterias despite COVID-19 driven changes. Nonetheless, continuous monitoring is recommended to ensure prompt response to changing environments.
In this study, the prevalence of microbiological hazard on water purifiers at lunchroom in child care center was investigated. A total of 49 water purifiers and their purified cold water were sampled to test about the total aerobic bacteria, coliform bacteria, Bacillus cereus, Staphylococcus aureus, and Salmonella spp. Total aerobic bacteria was detected over 2.0 log CFU/mL in 6 out of 49 purified cold water (12.2%), ranged from 2.0 to 2.4 log CFU/mL, and the average number of total aerobic bacteria was showed to be 3.3 log CFU/drain spout. The drain spout turned out to be a major contaminant in water purifier and needs to be improved. Coliform bacteria were also detected in 7 out of 49 cold faucets (14.3%) and 7 out of 49 drain spouts (14.3%), but not detected in purified cold water. All samples were not contaminated with the pathogens tested in this study, except for B. cereus, which was contaminated on 2 out of 49 cold faucets (4.1%) and 4 out of 49 drain spouts (8.2%). All of B. cereus isolates produced enterotoxin, such as heamolysin BL enterotoxin (HBL) or non-heamolytic enterotoxin (NHE). The HBL was detected in 5 out of 6 B. cereus isolates (83.3%), including B. cereus PCF-11 and B. cereus PDS-30 isolate only produced NHE (16.7%). These results showed that the sanitary conditions of cold faucets and drain spouts should be improved promptly.
A study was conducted to determine contamination status of fish sold at wholesale market in Seoul. A total of 79 samples (35 different kindry fish) were collected from the wholesale market. E. coli and coliform group bacteria were cultured and tested for sensitivity against antibiotics. The results are summarized as follows; 1. E. coli was isolated from 23 out of 79 samples (29.1%), and coliform groups from 53 out of 79 (67.1%). 2. Of coliform group, Citrobacter freundii was the most common and Enterobacter clacae was the next. 3.23 E. coli strains isolated from fishes were resistant to Oxacillin, Erythromycin and Lincomycin, meanwhile 23 E. coli strains were sensitive to Cefoperazone, Ceftazidime, Imipenem, and Ciprofloxacin.
In order to estimate the necessity of refrigerated storage of fresh seafood for short-term storage, and evaluate the effect of refrigerated storage on pen shell Atrina pectinata and clam Ruditapes philippinarum collected from Jang-su of Deukryang Bay and I-mok of Sunchen Bay in South Korea, the counts of coliform, Escherichia coli and total aerobic bacteria in A. pectinata and R. philippinarum under non-refrigerated $(28{\pm}1^{\circ}C)$ and refrigerated storage conditions $(4{\pm}1^{\circ}C)$ were determined. The results indicated that the storage at temperature of $4^{\circ}C$ possessed significant effects on inhibiting bacterial growth in live seafood. And refrigerated storage had different effect on A. pectinata and R. philippinarum. Different species and culture environments significantly influenced the initial and ultima bacteria counts. This study confirmed that refrigerated storage for short-term storage of live seafood was necessary, and indicated that the effect of refrigerated storage was influenced by comprehensive effectors.

Objective: This study was performed to detect indicator bacteria in drinking spring water samples in Gwangju City and to identify their genus using the VITEK-II system. Methods: The subjects were ten drinking spring water sites in Gwangju. Samples of spring water were taken every month from September 2019 to August 2020. We analyzed for the indicator bacteria Yersinia and microorganisms isolated from the spring water. Result: According to the research results on indicator bacteria, general bacteria in st1-st7 with sterilization facilities in the spring and summer were investigated in the range of 0-2 CFU/mL and 0-12 CFU/mL. In st9, where a sterilization facility was not installed, the most general bacteria were detected (160 CFU/mL). Total coliform and fecal coliform showed unsatisfied rates of 16.7 and 11.1% in spring and 14.7 and 11.8% in summer, respectively. The unsatisfied rates of total coliform for the designated and non-designated spring water facilities were 3.8 and 47.1%, respectively, and for the fecal coliform group they were 2.5 and 35.3%. The difference was confirmed according to the presence of a sterilization facility. Yersinia spp. was not detected in all drinking spring water. Forty-one strains in 25 species were isolated from ten sites. The results classified as major dominant species are Pseudomonas spp. 14.6%, Pantoea spp. 9.8%, Serratia spp. 9.8%, Acinetobacter spp. 9.8%, Citrobacter spp. 7.3%, Bordetella spp. 7.3%, Delftia spp. 4.9%, and Enterobacter spp. 4.9%. Conclusions: Based on the result that various species derived from fecal pollution and artificial pollutants were detected in the non-specified public spring water facilities that many people use, the facilities need institutional complements such as continuous management or complete shutdowns.
In this study, we analyzed the microbial contamination level of ultraviolet sterilizer (UVS) chambers and suggested plans to improve hygiene management. In this study, UVS chambers targeted 98 UVS in some childcare centers in Jeollanam-do, Korea. Total aerobic bacteria and coliform bacteria were tested according to the Korean Food Code. Of the 98 UVS chambers, total aerobic bacteria were detected in 67 (68.4%) and coliform bacteria in 5 (5.1%). Six kinds of food-poisoning bacteria, including Salmonella spp., were not detected, but Bacillus cereus was detected in 1 (2.8%) out of 98 UVS chambers. According to the UV lamp replacement period, the detection rate of total aerobic bacteria was 3 (50%) out of 6 UVS within 3 months, 3 (60%) out of 5 UVS in 3 to 6 months, and 61 (70.1%) out of 87 UVS over 6 months. The detection rate of coliform bacteria according to the UV lamp replacement period was not detected within 6 months, however, they were detected in 5 (5.7%) out of 87 chambers after more than 6 months. The level of microbial contamination in the UVS chambers was higher as the lamp replacement period was longer. Considering these results, it was determined that the UVS chambers should be kept dry and clean, and the UV lamp should be replaced periodically. In addition, it is necessary to provide the staff catering for childcare centers with continuous education regarding the cleaning of UVS chambers and the replacement of UV lamps.
