Nitrifying bacteria were detected by fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) method at 6 sampling sites with different eutrophication degree in the Nak-Dong River and their tributaries. And conventional physico-chemical parameters including $NH_4-N$, $NO_3-N$, and TN were determined concurrently. In rainy period (July), there was no noticeable difference between the number of ammonia/nitrite-oxidizing bacteria detected at each site except Sang-Ju and the ratio of nitrifying bacteria to total counts stained by DAPI varied in 6~33%. By contrast, in the dry period (October), both of bacterial population was increased differently and the ratio of nitrifying bacteria to total counts ranged more widely from 6% in heavily polluted water zone, Hwa-Won to 60% in upper tributary with high agricultural land use. Byung-Sung-Chun. In January, the numbers of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria was reduced up to one tenth, while those of nitrite-oxidizing bacteria was apparently increased maybe due to high DO and low DOC.
Tetracycline is one of the mostly used antibiotics around the world. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the fate of two different types of tetracycline resistant bacteria in biological wastewater treatment plants. Tetracycline resistant enterics and heterotrophic bacteria were monitored under two different lab-scale experimental conditions. Tetracycline resistant enteric bacteria showed the lower percentages of total enteric bacteria and net specific growth rate in the monitored activated sludge system as compared to tetracycline resistant heterotrophic bacteria. Therefore, total enterics, potentially E.coli, might not be the best indicator microorganism for evaluating the antibiotic resistant bacteria in biological wastewater treatment plant.
Objectives: The aim of this study is to assess indoor air quality within and around buildings and evaluate the health risks associated with exposure to indoor air pollution. The study compares IAQ standards established by the World Health Organization with those set by South Korea's Ministry of Environment and Ministry of Education. Methods: The study utilized an Anderson Sampler and DustTrakTM II to collect samples of total airborne bacteria and PM in indoor and outdoor environments. Collected samples were analyzed using biological and biochemical methods. Statistical analysis was conducted using SPSS to examine the correlation between airborne bacteria and PM. Results: The study revealed that the concentration of total airborne bacteria in indoor air generally remained below the Ministry of Environment's standard of 800 CFU/m3, although it surpassed this threshold in certain instances. PM concentrations did not exceed the standards. Indoor fine dust concentration was higher when there were people (P<0.05). There was no difference in total floating bacterial concentrations between indoor and outdoor environments (P=0.184). Finally, there was a correlation between fine dust and airborne bacteria concentrations. Conclusion: The study evaluated the concentrations of total airborne bacteria and PM in indoor air, emphasizing the importance of managing IAQ. Further research in various environments is essential to ensure a healthy indoor environment. The findings underscore the need for ongoing research and management to enhance IAQ and create safer and healthier living environments.
Optimal management of indoor air quality in a confined pig house, especially in winter, is indispensable for preventing infectious respiratory disease to workers and animals. This study was performed to elucidate the correlation of aerial contaminants and climate factors in a confinement. It was observed that indoor air contaminants ion in the confinement was the highest at 2:00-5:00 pm in a day, followed by 8:00-11:00 pm and 8:00-11:00 am. This was attributed to the increase of pig activities in the afternoon. The concentration of total dust and total airborne bacteria was found to have a significant correlation with temperature and relative humidity (p<0.05). Correlation of total dust and total airborne bacteria, total dust and ammonia, and total dust and odor were shown statistically significant at 95% confidence level. In conclusion, temperature and total dust concentration correlated significantly with all the parameters except for hydrogen sulfide ($H_2S$). This could be explained by the fact the dryness of pig feces by increase of interior temperature and resuspension of feed deposited on the floor by the pig activity, resulted in high generation of dust which adsorbed and carried the airborne bacteria and odor compounds in a confined pig house. It was proved that the adsorptive capacity of dust with ammonia ($NH_3$) was higher than that with hydrogen sulfide ($H_2S$).
The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of Lactobacillus acidophilus probiotic (LAP) product supplementation on the blood profile, fecal noxious gas emission, and fecal shedding of lactic acid bacteria and coliform bacteria in healthy adult Beagle dogs. In total, 14 Beagle dogs with an average initial body weight of 10.19 ± 0.61 kg were randomly assigned into two dietary treatments, with and without LAP supplementation, for a 28-day feeding trial. At the end of the experiment, there was no significant (p > 0.05) difference in the concentration of serum total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), white blood cell (WBC), red blood cell (RBC), blood lymphocyte percentage, fecal hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and total mercaptans (R.SH) emission, and fecal coliforms counts. However, the serum concentrations of the triglyceride and fecal ammonia (NH3) emission of the LAP treatment were significantly (p < 0.05) decreased in the group compared with the CON dogs. Fecal total lactic acid bacteria counts were significantly (p < 0.05) increased in the LAP treatment. In conclusion, the supplementation of LAP in Beagle dog diets could decrease the blood triglyceride level and enhance the gut Lactobacillus count which may have positive effects on dogs.
Activation bacteria, identified from commercial microbial products, were applied to leachate treatment. Total seven strains of bacteria Enterobacteriaceae spp. (5), Bacillus sp. (1), Aeromonas sp. (1) were seeded in the leachate and cultured in the shaking incubator at 25$^{\circ}$C and 250 rpm. While cultured, they were sampled in given time intervals and the removal rates of SS, COD, BOD, T-N.and T-P were measured an indicators of leachate treatment. Through the screening test, four of 7 strains of bacteria were considered to be effective and they were named as "effective group". The capability of leachate treatment was observed on three different groups of bacteria single, effctive, and total mixed. The result showed that the removal rates of COD and SS for the total mixed group were 64 and 71% respectively. BOD removal rate was reached nearly 99% by seeding of effective griup and removal rates of T-P and T-N were 83 and 82% respectively. However seeding of single strain was less effective than that of any mixed group in leachate treatment.
Changes of chemical componts and populations of total bacteria and lactic acid bacteria were examined during a month-long storage of sweet potatoes crushed and sealed up with polyethylene film at $7-8^{\circ}C$. 1. Changes of starch, total protein, volatile acid and ammonia-nitrogen contents were li 2. In a three days, pH down and increase of non-volatile acid content were notable, populations of total bacteria and lactic acid bacteria were maximum. 3. Vitamic C and soluble sugar contents tended to be reduced during the storage and the leftover were 75-85% and 41-45% respectively. 4. ${\beta}$-Amylase activity decreased gradually and vanished 15-30days. 5. Variations of chemical compontents of the samples inoculated lactic acid bacteria were larger than non- treated to some extent. 6. As above results, mainly homo lactic acid fermentation was done in this storage condition.
To obtain basic data for the decvelopment of Kimchi preservation method, optimal ripening Kimchi was air-packaged with polyethylene bag, and followed by the microbiological, firmness and sensory evaluations during storage at 5$^{\circ}C$. 1. Total aerobic count increased in the beginning of storage and then decreased slowly as the number of total Lactic bacteria(anaerobe) in creased. 2. Textural parameters were remarkably changed according to the elapse of storage period. 3. Sensory evaluation showed that the score was decreased considerably 10 days after storage.
The purpose of this study was to analyze general ingredient of bean cured on the market and to examine its exposure to bacterial contamination. For this study, 17 samples (each 9 samples for general bean curd, soft bean curd, and uncurdled bean curd) were randomly collected from nine areas in Seoul from the beginning of April, 1983 to the beginning of June, 1983. The result of ingredient analysis of moisture, ash, and protein of bean curd was compared with the standard set by the Ministry of Health & Social Affairs. In order to find out exposure of bean curd on the market to bacterial contamination, total biological bacteria and coliform group were examined. Experimental results were shown as follows 1) Results of ingredient analysis of moisture, ash, and protein of general bean curd showed that total samples in both moisture and protein met the standard set by the Ministry of Health & Social Affairs but 44.4% of the samples in ash was below the above standard, indicating average 82.0%, 0.9% and 9.6% in moisture, ash, and protein order. 2) Experimental results of moisture, ash, and protein of soft bean curd demonstrated 90.2%, 0.5% and 4.3% respectively total samples in both moisture and protein satisfied the self-criteria set by the Soft Food Co-operative Association of Seoul City but 11.1% of the samples in ash didn't meet the self-criteria. 3) Total samples of uncurdled bean curd satisfied the self-criteria set by the above association, indicating average 92.0%, 0.4%, and 3.5% in moisture, ash, and protein order. 4) Total biological bacteria and coliform group detected in general bean curd showed that more than 10$^5$/g in total biological bacteria accounted for 88.8% of the samples and that 10$^4$/g or more in coliform group accounted for 77.7% of the samples. The result proves that general bean curd has been exposured to a severe bacterial contamination. 5) Result of total biological bacteria and coliform group detected in such packed bean curd as uncurdled bean curd and soft bean curd showed that 61.6% of the samples exceeded 10$^6$/g in total biological bacteria and 27.7% of the samples exceeded 10$^3$/g in coliform group. 6) According to the change with time and temperatures in total biological bacteria and coliform group of general bean curd, general bean curd began to decay around 72 hours at 4$\circ$C and around 48 hours at 23$\circ$C and around 24 hours at 37$\circ$C and, at that time, total biological bacteria approached 10$^6$/g while coliform group did 10$^6$/g. The result indicates that temperature has a great effect on bacteria counts and decay.
This research was conducted to evaluate fungal and bacterial populations in unhulled and brown rice under indoor storage conditions, and to examine the relationship between microbial populations and environmental conditions such as temperature and relative humidity. The temperature and relative humidity of the storage room ranged from $22.6^{\circ}C\;to\;27.0^{\circ}C$ and 23.3% to 44.2%, respectively. Total fungal and bacterial populations remained relatively stable over the storage period. Predominant fungi included Aspergillus candidus, A. flavus, A. fumigatus, and Penicillium spp.; the predominant bacteria were Bacillus, Microbacterium, Sphingomonas, and Methylobacterium spp. Total fungi and bacteria were not significantly correlated with either unhulled (r=0.448, P=0.372) or brown (r=0.466, P=0.351) rice. In unhulled rice, total fungi showed positive correlations with total Aspergillus (r=0.994, P<0.001) and total Penicillium (r=0.906, P<0.05); A. flavus was positively correlated with total Aspergillus (r=0.913, P<0.05) and total fungi (r=0.868, P<0.05). In brown rice, Bacillus spp. was also positively correlated with total bacteria (r=0.998, P<0.001). Mean temperature was negatively correlated with A. candidus (r=-0.852, P<0.05) and total fungi (r=-0.961, P<0.01), and mean relative humidity was positively correlated with total Penicillium spp.(r=0.884, P<0.05) in brown rice. Hence these results could provide basic information on the fungal and bacterial populations in unhulled and brown rice stored under room conditions, and on the effect of environmental conditions on the populations of fungi and bacteria, especially Aspergillus and Penicillium spp.
