  • This study was carried out to investigate the treatability of landfill leachate having high concentration of ammonium nitrogen with/without the circulation of media in pilot-scale($48m^3basis$) process. Total nitrogen removal efficiency was relatively increased in the media added process (influent ; $1.230{\sim}2,000mg{\cdot}l^{-1}$, effluent ; $120{\sim}250mg{\cdot}l^{-1}$) compared with the control process. The difference of nitrogen removal efficiency between these processes may be due to that stable growth of nitrifiers attached to the media could be achieved 99.3% of ammonium-nitrogen removal efficiency(without ; 98.2%) and 88.5% of total nitrogen removal efficiency(without ; 85.8%) were shown in media added process, respectively. Also, optimum BOD/ $NH_4{^+}$-N ratio was relatively decreased in the media process compared with the control process. Sludge settleability, on the other hand. was shown better in media added process than in control process. This outstanding sludge settleability in the media added process indicates the compatibility of media(zeolite) to the microorganism and the possibility of using media of biofilm process.

  • A vegetation purification system was applied to improve water quality of Masan Reservoir in Korea, which was composed of constructed wetlands in series. Five different kinds of macrophytes were planted in each wetland. The system was operated with the condition of low concentrations and high hydraulic loadings. Removal efficiencies(%) of chemical oxygen demand(COD) , total nitrogen(T-N) and total phosphorus(T-P) in this system were 9.0, 12.8, 20.1% , respectively. and removal rates(g/$m^2$/d) were 1.9(COD), 0.34(T-N) and 0.05(T-P) . Comparing this system with other wetlands operated at low hydraulic loadings, average removal efficiencies were low but removal rates were relatively high. Accordingly, this system could be applied to imporve reservoir water quality, because removal rates are more important than removal efficiencies in case of reservoir water quality improvement . However, the removal efficiencies and rates of this system are less than those of the hydroponic biofilter method which is a kind of a constructed wetland and utilize root zones of emergent macrophytes for trapping pollutants. Therefore, it is recommended that this system should be modified to utilize root zones of emergent macrophytes enough to improve reservoir water quality more efficiently.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the purification efficiency of the septic tank method which has been applied by the most of Korean livestock farms, in terms of anaerobic and aerobic treatment. Except several days in summer, BOD of effluent shows 1,500 -3,000 ppm by anaerobic process. In most cases , it exceeds according to the seasons show an increase by decrease of temperature. The removal effect on T-N is hardly found. The suspended solids contents of effluent are reduced to the level of 50-90%. Although BOD contents of effluent are kept high in the beginning, the removal rate of BOD shows 80 percent in the latter half by the aerobic treatment . The removal efficiency of total nitrogen does not appear through the experimental period, but the contents of T-N are not increased in the aerobic process unlike in the anaerobic process. The total phosphorous contents in effluent keep a constant level of 14 mg/L in average. The removal rate of phosphorous shows 91 percent i the last stage.

  • A combination of the submerged membrane activated-sludge bioreactor(SMABR) equipped with non-woven fabric filter and oyster-zeolite (OZ) packed-bed adsorption column was studied to evaluate the advanced tertiary treatment of nitrogen and phosphorous. The non-woven filter module was submerged in the MBR and aeration was operated intermittently for an optimal wastewater treatment performance. Artificial wastewater with $COD_{Cr}$ of 220 mg/L, total nitrogen (T-N) of 45 mg/L, and total phosphorous (T-P) of 6 mg/L was used in this study. MLSS was maintained about $4,000\;{\sim}\;5,000\;mg/L$ throughout the experiments. The experiments were performed for 100-day with periodic non-woven filter washing. The results showed that $COD_{Cr}$ could be effectively removed in SMABR alone with over 94% removal efficiency. However, T-N and T-P removal efficiency was slightly lower than expected with SMABR alone. The permeate from SMABR was then passed through the OZ column for tertiary nutrients removal. The final effluent analysis confirmed that nutrients could be additionally removed resulting in over 87% and 46% removal efficiencies for T-N and T-P, respectively. The results of this study suggest that the waste oyster-shell can be effectively reclaimed as an adsorbent in advanced tertiary wastewater treatment processes in combination with SMABR equipped with non-woven fabric filter.

  • In this study, the feasibility of simultaneous removal of organic materials and nitrogen in the waste-water from fisheries processing plant was evaluated using entrapped mixed microbial cell technique(EMMC) process. The experiment was performed using activated sludge from municipal sewage treatment plant which was immobilized with gel matrix by cellulose triacetate. It was found that the stable operation at the treatment system which is composed of anoxic and oxic tank, was possible when the organic and nitrogen loading rates were increased stepwise. The organic and nitrogen loading rates were applied from 0.65 to $1.72kgCOD/m^3/d$ and from 0.119 to $0.317kgT-N/m^3$ with four steps, respectively. The maximum nitrogen loading rate which could satisfy the regulated effluent standard of nitrogen concentration, was $0.3kgT-N/m^3/d$. The removal efficiency of total nitrogen was decreased apparently as increasing nitrogen loading rates, whereas the removal efficiency of ammonium nitrogen was effective at the all tested nitrogen loading rates. Therefore, it was concluded that nitrification was efficient at the system. Nitrate removal efficiency ranged from 98.62% to 99.51%, whereas the nitrification efficiency at the oxic tank ranged 94.0% to 96.9% at the tested loading rates. The removal efficiencies of chemical oxygen demand(COD) and those of total nitrogen at the entire system ranged from 94.2% to 96.6% and 73.4% to 83.4%, respectively.

  • This study was initiated to evaluate efficiencies of suspenced-growth processes(CAS; Conventional Activated Sludge, MLE; Modified Ludzack-Ettinger) and hybrid process(Modified-Dephanox) on removal of organic matter(C), nitrogen(N) and phosphorus(P) in municipal wastewater. M-Dephanox process was designed to improve the performance of Dephanox process on denitrification efficiency. As the results, removal efficiencies of total chemical oxygen demand(TCOD), total nitrogen(T-N) and total phosphorus(T-P) in M-Dephanox process, which is hybrid process, were 12,3, 18.6 and 28.2% higher than those in MLE, which is suspended-growth process. The better removal efficiencies of TCOD, T-N and T-P in M-Dephanox than those in MLE result that M-Dephanox is not only hybrid or multi-sludge process but also process using biosorption mechanism which is possible to use organics in denitrification, effectively. Ammonia removal efficiency in nitrification reactor of M-Dephanox was 96.7% at short hydraulic retention time(HRT) of 2 hr which was 3 hr more short HRT than that(HRT 5 hr) reported in other related papers. This indicates that M-Dephanox process can reduce HRT of whole process.

  • This study focused on evaluating the efficiency of the removal of non-point source pollution by Daecheong Lake Juwon Stream constructed wetlands. The constructed wetland system is a surface flow type designed in the year 2007 for purifying eutrophic water of Daecheong Lake Juwon Stream. The value of conductivity, suspended solids(SS), chemical oxygen demand using a potassium permanganate($COD_{Mn}$), five-day biochemical oxygen demand($BOD_5$), total nitrogen(T-N), total phosphorous(T-P), and pH in inflow averaged 220.2, 2.46, 3.33, 1.34, 2.00, 0.04 mg/L and 7.24, respectively and in outflow averaged 227.9, 1.12, 3.34, 0.87, 1.16, 0.02 mg/L and 7.45, respectively. The average removal efficiency of constructed wetlands was 30 % for SS, 22 % for $BOD_5$, 45 % for T-N and 31 % for T-P. The removal rates of SS, $BOD_5$ and T-N in the spring, summer and autumn were higher than those in winter. The removal rate of T-P was not significant different in all seasons. The amounts of pollutants removal in the constructed wetlands were higher in the order of $3^{rd}$ < $2^{nd}$ < $1^{st}$ wetland for SS and T-P, $2^{nd}$ < $3^{rd}$ < $1^{st}$ wetland for $BOD_5$ and T-N. Therefore, our findings suggest that the constructed wetlands could well treat the eutrophic Daecheong Lake Juwon Stream waters.

  • Purpose: High concentrations of nitrogen exist in food wastewater, and when nitrogen is not properly treated and discharged, it can cause eutrophication in the aquatic ecosystem. Research design, data and methodology: In order to remove nitrogen using sodium hypochlorite, the BNCR tank was designed and installed in the step behind the biological treatment tank, and the data of pH, TOC, and T-N were collected after about a month of demonstration. Results: As a result of operating the BNCR tank, total nitrogen decreased by about 83% on average. The total nitrogen in the second sedimentation tank before going through the BNCR tank must be removed and finally discharged after nitrogen is removed above the legal standard of 60 mg/L. Conclusions: If BNCR tank is added to the process currently applied to nitrogen removal and operated, ammonia nitrogen can be removed more efficiently. However, the disadvantage is that nitric acid nitrogen and nitric acid nitrogen cannot be removed. If these disadvantages are supplemented and optimized in the future, it will be helpful for workplaces that are having difficulty removing nitrogen.

  • This study was carried out to evaluate the high rate biological reactor such as lab scale reactor before the application in site, and to get the basic data for possibility using liquid fertilizer with the effluent from biological reactor when the centrifugal machine was applied. The total volume of this reactor in 6 L, in composted of anoxic reactor (2 L), aerobic reactor (2 L), and nitification reactor (2 L). BOD removal efficiency rates when centrifugal machine was applied after effluent from biological reactor are over than 95%. This biological reactor was required post process to satisfy the effluent standards, and was need centrifugal machine to control the washout of microbes in the reactor. T-N removal efficiency rate in HRT 24 hr with centrifugation is 80.0%, and it is desirable to operate less than $1.3kgN/m^3{\cdot}d$ for 70% of T-N removal efficiency rate. T-P removal efficiency rate in HRT 24 hr is 68.2%, and become higher 71.3% after centrifugation. Considering in the 28.6% T-N removal efficiency rate, the nitrogen contents of the effluent from reactor is 0.34% to satisfy the liquid fertilizer.

  • Total suspended solids (TSS), five-day biochemical oxygen demand ($BOD_5$), total nitrogen (T-N), and total phosphorous (T-P) concentrations around and under a floating island were examined from October 2002 to September 2003. The island was installed in July 2002 on the surface of an agricultural irrigation reservoir located in the southern part of the Korean Peninsula. It was composed of six polyethylene panels. Each panel was 2 m (length) ${\times}$ 1 m (width) ${\times}$ 0.02 m (thick) and had about thirty-two holes each with a diameter of eight centimeters, through which plant roots grew down into the water. Coconut fibers of nine-centimeters in height were placed on the panel, which sustained plants rhizomes and roots. Both the fibers and the panel were raped with polyethylene wire mashes. About thirty irises (Iris pseudoacorus) were planted into the fibers of each panel. The concentrations of TSS, $BOD_5$, T-N and T-P below the island during the iris-growing season averaged 9.70, 2.59, 3.61 and 0.14 mg/L, respectively and those around it averaged 9.99, 2.83, 4.07 and 0.16 mg/L, respectively. The average concentrations of TSS, $BOD_5$, T-N and T-P below it during the iris non-growing season were 8.68, 2.37, 3.25 and 0.14 mg/L, respectively and those near it were 8.76, 2.43, 3.34 and 0.15 mg/L, respectively. At a significance level of ${\alpha}$=0.05, $BOD_5$, T-N and T-P concentrations under the island during the iris-growing season were significantly low when compared with those around it except TSS. No differences in TSS, $BOD_5$, T-N and T-P concentrations between around and near it were found at a significance level of ${\alpha}$=0.05 during the iris non-growing season. The removal of $BOD_5$, T-N, and T-P during the growing season were significantly high when compared with those during the non-growing season. TSS abatement of the floating island was very low during both the growing and non-growing seasons. The island's reductions of $BOD_5$, T-N and T-P were good during the growing season, especially T-N and T-P, which have been considered as primary pollutant sources causing the water quality degradation of reservoirs. The removal of T-N and T-P was primarily attributed to the absorption of nitrogen and phosphorous by the irises during the growing season.
