Harmonics Elimination in a Multilevel Inverter with Unequal DC Sources Using a Genetic Algorithm

  • In this paper, an optimal solution to the harmonic reduction problem in a cascaded multilevel inverter with non-equal DC sources using a genetic algorithm (GA) is presented. Switching angles are generated for different values of modulation index by the proposed algorithm, considering minimum voltage total harmonic distortion (THD) whereas selected harmonics are controlled within the allowable limits at all desired modulation indices including the point of discontinuity. Results are stored as a look-up table to be used to control the inverter for a certain operating point. The computed angles are used in a simulated circuit in Matlab\Simulink to validate the results.

  • This paper presents the results of investigating harmonic levels on medium voltage motors at loading conditions in air separation plant. The essential results of the measurements of the medium voltage motor harmonics are summarized in the values for the total harmonic distortion (THD). Motors loading case is used to assess the current and voltage harmonic distortions. Proper system analysis is important when adding a new motor starting and controlling the equipment. With the result of the paper it is possible to suggest the most appropriate starting and control method. Two medium voltage motors of air separation unit measurement results and simulations are summarized. Both current and voltage harmonic distortions are fitted by using a linear and exponential regression model. The prediction of THD values can be used for this kind of process for future planning by utilities.

  • This paper proposes the influences of harmonic current on electrical characteristics of an induction motor. Recently, a power system gets more worse as nonlinear load makes harmonics to affect energy lose of system and shorten lift of machines. In this paper, the electrical effect and THD(Total Harmonic Distortion) of harmonic current to an induction motor which is of great use in the industrial fields are measured and analyzed. A power conversion equipment(inverter) is installed to produce harmonics and variable reactors are installed to reduce the harmonics having an effect on the input terminal. Then the effects of the reactors are measured and analyzed. Also average voltage, current, power and 110 by harmonics are analyzed. The results show that Inn is increased by increasing load of the induction motor and installing reactors. And the harmonics affecting the input terminal are decreased by increasing reactor 3[mH] to 6[mH], however, average power of the induction motor is decreased. Therefore, it is very important that reactors should be carefully installed considering the merits and demerits resulting from the installation of reactors.

Level Number Effect on Performance of a Novel Series Active Power Filter Based on Multilevel Inverter

  • This paper presents a single-phase asymmetric half-bridge cascaded multilevel inverter based series active power filter (SAPF) for harmonic voltage compensation. The effect of level number on performance of the proposed SAPF is examined in terms of total harmonic distortion (THD) and system efficiency. Besides, the relationship between the level number and the number of switching device are compared with the other multilevel inverter topologies used in APF applications. The paper is also aimed to demonstrate the capability of the SAPF for compensating harmonic voltages alone, without using a passive power filter (PPF). To obtain the required output voltage, a new switching algorithm is developed. The proposed SAPF with levels of 7, 15 and 31 is used in both simulation and experimental studies and the harmonic voltages of the load connected to the point of common coupling (PCC) is compensated under two different loading conditions. Furthermore, very high system efficiency values such as 98.74% and 96.84% are measured in the experimental studies and all THD values are brought into compliance with the IEEE-519 Standard. As a result, by increasing the level number of the inverter, lower THD values can be obtained even under high harmonic distortion levels while system efficiency almost remains the same.

  • In this paper, the analysis of the harmonics of distribution power system interconnected with DG(distributed generation) is simulated by using PSCAD/EMTDC and evaluated the harmonics. The modeling system for simulation is similar to the actual distribution system, and solar power system. The simulation analyses are performed at connection points for each sector. Harmonic standards of interconnection with DG (IEEE Std 1547 and IEEE Std 519) are applied to the evaluation algorithm, converted the simulated data through FFT method, evaluated by THD and TDD separately. The harmonic contents in the case of without DG and each sector with DG are evaluated and compared. The results of evaluation showed the effect that the harmonic contents are appropriated at all sector with DG (without DG) in the distribution power systems but the large induction motor(50KW) is increased the harmonic contents.

Design of DC Side Voltage and Compensation Analysis of THD for Shunt Power Quality Controller under System Load of Rectifier with R-L Load

  • For a shunt power quality controller (SPQC) the DC side voltage value which is closely related to the compensation performance is a significant parameter. Buy so far, very little discussion has been conducted on this in a quantitative manner by previous publications. In this paper, a method to design the DC side voltage of SPQC is presented according to the compensation performance in the single-phase system and the three-phase system respectively. First, for the reactive current and the harmonic current compensation, a required minimal value of the DC side voltage with a zero total harmonic distortion (THD) of the source current and a unit power factor is obtained for a typical load, through the equivalent circuit analysis and the Fourier Transform analytical expressions. Second, when the DC side voltage of SPQC is lower than the above-obtained minimal value, the quantitative relationship between the DC side voltage and the THD after compensation is also elaborated using the curve diagram. Hardware experimental results verify the design method.

Harmonics Measurement of the Running Test EMU Train in Conventional Railway Lines (일반철도선로에서의 전동차 시험운행에 대한 고조파 측정연구)

  • The electric quality of train is represented by voltage and current harmonics at PT(Ratio 25,000/15/[V]) which is located between pantograph and primary winding of train transformer. In this paper, voltage and current harmonics were measured on the test EMU(electric multiple unit)train with maximum speed of 180km/h in existing railway lines(chungbuk, Taeback, Honam). As a results of test, it is found that the electric quality of train depends on the mostly operation conditions which is accelerating mode and braking mode on each sections. Voltage THD is above all 3[%] and current harmonics is monitored from lowest Harmonic to highest Harmonic in case of accelerating mode. But, highest current harmonics is not monitored in case of breaking mode. The results in this paper can help to stabilize the power device and power converter of the test EMU train.

  • This paper analyzes the THD(Total Harmonics Distortion) according to output power fluctuation of photovoltaic(PV) systems using real time simulator. For being close to reality, the PV system including inverter and MPPT(Maximum Power Point Tracking) which composed of closed-loop using real-time simulator are modeled. The change of irradiance and temperature of PV module is modeled to consider the change of weather. The various simulations according to the weather conditions are performed and THD is calculated at each condition. In this paper, the results by off-line simulation are compared with the ones of real time simulation.

  • The prevalence of electronic devices in our modern life is accompanied with the generation of harmonics caused by the nonlinear characteristic load. Especially, the employment of LED have brought the rapid use of SMPS. SMPS is used for supplying the constant DC electric power to the LED display board, but it has a big problem which gives birth of harmonics causing by its high-speed switching. measurement HIOKI 3196 equipment to solve these harmonics were measured. In this study, we are LED Display Board Load Measuring the impedance response with $X_L$ changes for removing harmonics in the measured. And we adopted the suitable passive filter by the impedance response characteristic obtained in the $X_L$ variation experiments. We are trying to deeply the application of passive harmonic filter characteristics that generation in the LED Display Board through EDSA LED simulation.

  • In order to reduce the harmonics in invertor output of the DVR system, typically LC filter is employed. In designing the LC filter, it is required to consider the gild impedance and the characteristic of the harmonics. In this paper, problems in the conventional way of designing the LC filter is analyzed and new LC fitter design technique is proposed. In the proposed technique, parameters of the LC filter are calculated considering grid impedance, THD, DC link voltage and phase lag. The validity and feasibility of the proposed method is verified through the simulations experiments. The DVR system with the proposed LC filter is being built and tested.
