This paper describes design, fabrication, and application of the silicon based temperature controllable micro reactor. In order to achieve fast temperature variation and low energy consumption, reaction chamber of the micro reactor was thermally isolated by etching the highly conductive silicon around the reaction chamber. Compared with the model not having thermally isolated structure, the thermally isolated micro reactor showed enhanced thermal performances such as fast temperature variation and low energy consumption. The performance enhancements of the micro reactor due to etched holes were verified by thermal experiment and numerical analysis. Regarding to 42 percents reduction of the thermal mass achieved by the etched holes, approximately 4 times faster thermal variation and 5 times smaller energy consumption were acquired. The total size of the fabricated micro reactor was $37{\times}30{\times}1mm^{3}$. Microchannel and reaction chamber were formed on the silicon substrate. The openings of channel and chamber were covered by the glass substrate. The Pt electrodes for heater and sensor are fabricated on the backside of silicon substrate below the reaction chamber. The dimension of channel cross section was $200{\times}100{\mu}m^{2}$. The volume of reaction chamber was $4{\mu}l$. The temperature of the micro reactor was controlled and measured simultaneously with NI DAQ PCI-MIO-16E-l board and LabVIEW program. Finally, the fabricated micro reactor and the temperature control system were applied to the thermal denaturation and the trypsin digestion of protein. BSA(bovine serum albumin) was chosen for the test sample. It was successfully shown that BSA was successfully denatured at $75^{\circ}C$ for 1 min and digested by trypsin at $37^{\circ}C$ for 10 min.
Objective: In this study, two glycosidases (XMosidases), ${\beta}$-xylosidase and ${\beta}$-mannosidase, were investigated on their in vitro hydrolysis activities of feed and on the improvement of growth performance in vivo in weanling pigs. Methods: Enzyme activities of XMosidases in vitro were evaluated in test tubes and simulation of gastric and small intestinal digestion, respectively, in the presence of NSPase. In vivo study was performed in 108 weaned piglets in a 28-d treatment. Pigs were allotted to one of three dietary treatments with six replicate pens in each treatment. The three treatment groups were as follows: i) Control (basal diet); ii) CE (basal diets+CE); iii) CE-Xmosidases (basal diets+ CE+${\beta}$-xylosidase at 800 U/kg and ${\beta}$-mannosidase at 40 U/kg). CE was complex enzymes (amylase, protease, xylanase, and mannanase). Results: In vitro XMosidases displayed significant activities on hydrolysis of corn and soybean meal in the presence of non-starch polysaccharide degrading enzymes (xylanase and ${\beta}$-mannanase). In vitro simulation of gastric and small intestinal digestion by XMosidases showed XMosidases achieved $67.89%{\pm}0.22%$ of dry matter digestibility and $63.12%{\pm}0.21%$ of energy digestibility at $40^{\circ}C$ for 5 hrs. In weanling pigs, additional XMosidases to CE in feed improved average daily gain, feed conversion rate (p<0.05), and apparent total tract digestibility of crude protein (p = 0.01) and dry matter (p = 0.02). XMosidases also altered the gut bacterial diversity and composition by increasing the proportion of beneficial bacteria. Conclusion: Addition of a complex enzyme supplementation (contained xylanase, ${\beta}$-mannanase, protease and amylase), XMosidases (${\beta}$-xylosidase and ${\beta}$-mannosidase) can further improve the growth performance and nutrient digestion of young pigs.

Methane was produced from the anaerobic digestion of marine macro-algae. Elemental analysis was first performed to estimate the theoretical methane production of three macro-algae (Undaria pinnatifida, Laminaria japonica, Hizikia fusiformis). Three algae were found to contain C 34 ~ 36%, H 5%, O 37 ~ 43%, N 2 ~ 4%, S 0.4 ~ 0.7%, and ash 14~21%, and the theoretical methane content was in the range of 56 ~ 60%, which can produce 442 ~ 568 mL $CH_4$ per g of volatile solid (VS). Using the biological methane potential (BMP) test, we found that L. japonica resulted in the highest yield of methane (52%). Moreover, various operational conditions, such as algae amount, pH, salinity, particle size, and pre-treatment, were investigated in order to find an optimal condition of anaerobic digestion. At pH 8.0, the autoclaved L. japonica (5g VS/200 mL), when used without washing salt, produced 268.5 mL/g VS which is 65% of the theoretical methane productions. Furthermore, using a CSTR (with the working volume of 7 L out of the total volume of 10 L), we have successfully operated the reactor for 65 days and obtained maximum methane production rate of 1.4 L/day with purity of 70%.

This research was performed to figure out the optimal mixing ratio of food- to livestock wastewater for the best degradation of organic matter in the anaerobic digestion. The presence of various microorganisms, such as Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus, was also investigated in both wastewater in this process. Enteric bacteria were only found in livestock wastewater, whereas pathogenic bacteria like S. aureus were detected in both wastewater. The optimal mixing ratio of food- to livestock wastewater for the best mineralization was found to fifty to fifty, with reduction ratios of $BOD_5$, CODcr SS as 23.2%, 24.7%, 19.7%, respectively. Hygiene of the digested sludge was also analyzed by counting the number of total colonies and various pathogens. Enterobacteriaceae including E. coli were barely detected in 10 days after reaction. Meanwhile, S. aureus was gradually reduced during reaction, even showing 1,000~5,000 CFU/mL in final days.
The effect of soil grinding on total As and Pb concentrations determined by aqua regia method was examined. Among six field-collected, air-dried soil samples tested, soils A, B, C, and E were directly sieved through a $150-{\mu}m$ sieve without grinding and showed 2.18 to 3.03 times higher total As concentrations and 2.62 to 3.45 times higher total Pb concentrations than those of the soil samples prepared to allow all soil particles to pass through the $150-{\mu}m$ sieve by grinding. The reason can be ascribed to the fact that those soils contain fine particles (i.e., < $150{\mu}m$ in diameter) only 4.6 to 6.8% of the total soil weights. On the other hand, for D and F soils, fine particles smaller than $150{\mu}m$ accounted for 57 and 46%, respectively, so that the effect of grinding on As and Pb concentrations were relatively low (As: 1.15 and 1.23 times, Pb: 1.36 and 1.49 times, respectively). The result demonstrates that grinding prior to $150-{\mu}m$ sieving is necessary to ensure the homogeneity of soil samples and hence to obtain more accurate heavy metal concentrations in soils. This is especially true for soil samples with less fine soil particles and/or microaggregates (i.e., below $150{\mu}m$).
This study was performed to investigate the infection status with Clonorchis sinensis metacercariae in Pseudorasbora parva from a tributary stream of Naktonggang (River) in Kangso-gu, Pusan. A total of 325 P. parva was collected in 4 sites using fish traps. They were transferred in the laboratory, measured the length and examined by artificial digestion method. In the site I, a total of 72 (80.0%) out of 90 fish examined was infected with 1~665 (112 in average) metacercariae of C. sinensis. The average number of metacercariae infected by the size of fish was 146 in the group of over 8 cm, 61 in 7.0~7.9 cm and 86 in below 6.9 cm. In the site II, a total of 50 (83.3%) out of 60 fish examined was infected with 1~178 (31 in average) metacercariae. The average number of metacercariae was 40 in the group of over 8 cm 35 in 7.0~7.9 cm, 23 in 6.0~6.9 cm and 25 in below 5.9 cm. In the site III, a total of 68 (97.1%) out of 70 fish examined was infected with 1~2,662 (508 in average) metacercariae. The average number of metacercariae was 679 in the group of over 7.0 cm, 444 in 6.0~6.9 cm and 426 in below 5.9 cm. In the site IV, a total of 103 (98.1%) out of 105 fish examined was infected with 1~1,536 (416 in average) metacercariae. The average number of metacercariae was 532 in the group of over 7 cm, 353 in 6.0~6.9 cm and 262 in below 5.9 cm. From the above results, it is confirmed that there are wide differences in the infection status of C. sinensis metacercariae in P. paeva according to investigation sites, and P. parva collected from the lower stream are more heavily infected than those from the upper stream.

In this study, we investigated the effect of seaweed (SW) addition on the anaerobic digestion of food waste (FW). Anaerobic batch experiments were carried out at various substrate concentrations (2.5 to 10.0 g VS/L) and mixing ratios (FW:SW=100:0, 75:25, 50:50, 25:75 and 0:100 on VS basis) of FW and SW. The methane yield of FW alone was 394, 377, 276, $49mL\;CH_4/g\;VS_{added}$ at each substrate concentration (2.5 to 10.0 g VS/L). In cases of co-digestion, methane yield decreased (up to 15 %) with increasing mixing ratio of SW at low substrate concentration (2.5 to 5.0 g VS/L), while it increased (up to 240 %) at high substrate concentration (7.5 to 10.0 g VS/L). The synergistic effect was calculated based on the amount of methane generated from the single-feedstock digestion of FW and SW. The synergistic effect was not found at 2.5 and 5.0 g VS/L. However, the synergistic effect increased (up to 25% = synergistic increment/total methane production at 10.0 g VS/L, FW:SW=50:50) with increasing the ratio of seaweed at 7.5 and 10.0 g VS/L. At 10.0 g VS/L of FW alone, the accumulated amount of organic acids was 7,426 mg COD/L, which was decreased to 2,346 mg COD/L by seaweed (FW:SW=50:50) addition. The reason for the synergistic effect was to control the production rate of the organic acids by adding SW that has a relatively lower biodegradability compared to FW.
Three goats were fed with $^{15}N$-labelled rice straw to study the characteristics of digestion, assimilation, metabolism and excretion of C and N compounds from rice straw. It was shown that the amount of $^{15}N$ assimilated into the bodies of the two slaughtered goats accounted for 38.5 and 23.6% of the total amount of $^{15}N$ ingestion in the experimental diet by each goat. The $^{15}N$ excreted via the feces and urine for the three goats accounted for 34.8, 33.2 and 33.9% of the total amount of $^{15}N$ ingested in the feed of the 3 goats. The recoveries of $^{15}N$ from the two slaughtered goats were 73.3 and 57.5%, with the corresponding rates of $^{15}N$ loss 26.7 and 42.5% respectively. The amino acids digestibilities were 68.7 and 54.0%, while the digestibilities of carbohydrates were 74.8 and 67.7% respectively for goats 1 and 3.

The purpose of this study was to validate the Sasang Digestive function Inventory (SDFI) and Sasang Personality Questionnaire (SPQ) which measures the pathophysiolgoical symptoms and temperament of each Sasang types. The SDFI, SPQ along with Questionnaire for Sasang Constitution Classification II (QSCCII) were measured with 191 College students. The correlation coefficient was measured with Pearson correlation between SDFI and SPQ. The SDFI and SPQ subscale score of each Sasang constitution groups based on QSCCII were compared using analysis of variance and profile analysis. The SDFI and SPQ total score of So-Eum Sasang type were significantly (p<0.001) different compared to those of Tae-Eum and So-Yang type, respectively. The SDFI and SPQ profile of each Sasang type group was significantly (p<0.001) different each other in profile analysis. There were no significant correlation (r=.126, p>0.05) between SDFI and SPQ total score, however the SDFI-Digestion scale showed significant correlation with SPQ subscales. We found that the SDFI and SPQ can measure the Sasang type-specific pathophysiological symptoms and temperaments, and it would be useful for the clinical application and interdisciplinary research when combined together.
Essential hypertension results from the complex interaction between genetic and environmental factors. A C825T polymorphism of the gene encoding G-protein ${\beta}3$ subunit (GNB3), associated with enhanced G-protein coupled signaling and increased $Na^+-H^+$ exchanger, has been implicated in the development of essential hypertension in several human populations, especially in Caucasian population. We examined the disease relevance of this candidate gene by performing an association study in a study group of Korean heritage. Participants comprised 109 essential hypertensives and 109 normotensives, respectively. Genotyping was performed with PCR-BsaJI restriction digestion method. Observed genotype frequencies were in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium in all groups. Genotype and allele frequencies did not differ significantly between normotensives and essential hypertensives (P>0.05). However, the serum total cholesterol (TC) and LDL-cholesterol levels were significantly higher in subjects with the TT genotype compared to those with the CC or CT genotypes in normotensives of our study subjects (P<0.05). Thus, these results suggest that GNB3/C825T polymorphism might be significantly associated with abnormality in serum lipid metabolism.
