  • Discrete torsional bracing systems are widely used in practice to increase the strength of I-girders bridges. This paper proposes equations for lateral-torsional buckling strength, torsional natural frequency and stiffness requirements of I-girders with discrete torsional bracings. Firstly, the equations to calculate the critical moment of the I-girder with discrete torsional bracings are introduced. The proposed equations are then compared with the results of finite element analyses and those from previous studies. The equations to calculate the torsional natural frequency are also presented in the same manner. From the results, it is found that proposed equations agree well with results of finite element analyses regardless of the number of bracing points. Finally, the reduced formula for the total torsional stiffness requirement is proposed for the design purpose.

  • Torsional vibration is to vibrate strongly when the ignition pulses of the engine is excited with natural frequency of driveline. Torsional vibration like this can cause various noises as rattle and booming. For this study multi-degree of freedom analysis model of torsional vibration, which is combined with mass moment of inertia and torsional spring, was developed toward two wheel drive, four wheel drive and torsional vibration characteristics were compared and analyzed through the natural frequences, mode shapes and frequency response characteristics which was acquired by the simulation of it. The pertinence of that model was proved by the field test and the outcome of the simulations coincided with feeling test. Therefore, four wheel drive simulation model is considered to be useful thing for reducing torsional vibration of driveline and developing full-time four wheel drive vehicles.

  • When a wind turbine is designed, the dynamic stability of the system as well as the dynamic characteristics of the main components such as blades, hub, main shaft and tower must be evaluated. In particular, the natural frequencies of a blade, as a main load-generating component, need to be measured and assessed by component level testing. In conventional practice, the natural frequencies of a blade are determined as the measured frequencies near the reference frequencies provided by FE analysis results. But the reference frequencies are also uncertain since designers have difficulty distinguishing the torsional mode shape among the analysis results due to the complexity of its mode shape. So, in conventional practice, the determination of a measured torsional frequency inevitably contains uncertainty. Therefore, a novel method to definitely determine the torsional frequencies from the experimental data itself is necessary. In this paper, a new methodology to measure the torsional frequency of a blade was studied from the perspective of a modal test procedure, data processing method and mode determination logic. Finally, the validity of the method that can measure torsional frequency without reference FE analysis results was verified by applying it to an actual large wind turbine blade

  • Piezoelectric torsional transducers have been fabricated to generate torsional waves in a rod. The principle of generating torsional wane is based on the use of the circumferential shear motion derived by axial voltage exerted on the piezoelectric disk poled in the circumferential direction. The natural frequency or the piezoelctric torsional dish has been reduced by fabricating Langevin-type torsional transducers. The natural frequecies of the fabricated transducers have been measured and have shown good agreement with the characteristics predicted by analysis.

  • In this paper, the authors formulate the sensitivity analysis algorithm for the natural frequency of a torsional shafting by expanding the transfer stiffness coefficient method. The basic concept of the present algorithm is based on the transfer of sensitivity stiffness coefficient, which is the derivative of stiffness coefficient with respect to design parameter, at every node from the first node to the last node in analytical model. The effectiveness of the present algorithm is confirmed by comparing the results of the sensitivity analysis and those of the reanalysis for the natural frequencies of a torsional shafting with a constant cross section. In numerical calculation, the design parameter is the diameter of the shaft element of the torsional shafting.

  • Wind tunnel aeroelastic model tests of the Commonwealth Advisory Aeronautical Research Council (CAARC) standard tall building were conducted using a three-degree-of-freedom base hinged aeroelastic(BHA) model. Experimental investigation into the effects of coupled translational-torsional motion, cross-wind/torsional frequency ratio and eccentricity between centre of mass and centre of stiffness on the wind-induced response characteristics and wind excitation mechanisms was carried out. The wind tunnel test results highlight the significant effects of coupled translational-torsional motion, and eccentricity between centre of mass and centre of stiffness, on both the normalised along-wind and cross-wind acceleration responses for reduced wind velocities ranging from 4 to 20. Coupled translational-torsional motion and eccentricity between centre of mass and centre of stiffness also have significant impacts on the amplitude-dependent effect caused by the vortex resonant process, and the transfer of vibrational energy between the along-wind and cross-wind directions. These resulted in either an increase or decrease of each response component, in particular at reduced wind velocities close to a critical value of 10. In addition, the contribution of vibrational energy from the torsional motion to the cross-wind response of the building model can be greatly amplified by the effect of resonance between the vortex shedding frequency and the torsional natural frequency of the building model.

  • Marine Propulsion shafting system coupled with medium diesel engine forms multi-degree torsional vibration system which consist of many inertia masses such as crank, flywheel, propeller and sometimes gear system is adopted additionally for the purpose of improving propeller's propulsion efficiency or connecting with PTO/PTI. The periodic excitation torques generated by combustion pressure in cylinder and reciprocating masses induce various kinds of vibrations in this shafting system. If the frequency of this excitation torques is equal to the natural frequency of the shafting, the amplitude of the torsional vibration increases steeply and the damage of crankshaft or gears may be occurred by that. This frequency is called critical speed. When making a plan for shafting system, it is important for this frequency to be expected exactly and not to be in commonly used speed. For this reason, this paper introduces the experimental equipment for torsional vibration of marine propulsion shafting system and describes the theoretic and the experimental methods to look for natural frequencies.

  • In this paper, the influence of a crack on the natural frequency of cracked cantilever L-shaped beam with coupled bending and torsional vibrations by analytically and experimentally is analyzed. The L-shaped beam with a crack is modeled by Hamilton's principle with consideration of bending and torsional energy. The two coupled governing differential equations are reduced to one sixth-order ordinary differential equation in terms of the flexural displacement. The crack is assumed to be in the first, second and third mode of fracture and to be always opened during the vibrations. The theoretical results are validated by a comparison with experimental measurements. The maximal difference between the theoretical results and experimental measurements of the natural frequency is less than 7.5% in the second vibration mode.

  • The paper deals with a theoretical study on the vibrational characteristics of piezoelectric torsional transducers. The differential equations of piezoelectric torsional motion have been derived in terms of the circumferential displacement and the electric potential. Applying mechanical and electrical boundary conditions has yielded the characteristic equations of natural vibration in several transducer types. Numerical results have clarified the effect of the piezoelectric phenomenon on the mechanical resonance and the effect of the elastic block of a Langevin-type transducer on the natural frequency.

  • A three-degree-of-freedom base hinged assembly (BHA) for aeroelastic model tests of tall building was developed. The integral parts of a BHA, which consists of two perpendicular plane frames and a flexural pivot, enable this modeling technique to independently simulate building translational and torsional degree-of-freedom. A program of wind tunnel aeroelastic model tests of the CAARC standard tall building was conducted with emphasis on the effect of (a) torsional motion, (b) cross-wind/torsional frequency ratio and (c) the presence of an eccentricity between center of mass and center of stiffness on wind-induced response characteristics. The experimental results highlight the significant effect of coupled translational-torsional motion and the effect of eccentricity between center of mass and center of stiffness on the resultant rms acceleration responses in both along-wind and cross-wind directions especially at operating reduced wind velocities close to a critical value of 10. In addition, it was sound that the vortex shedding process remains the main excitation mechanism in cross-wind direction even in case of tall buildings with coupled translational-torsional motion and with eccentricity.
