This paper presents a matrix analysis to get the torsional behavior of core structures with torsional reinforcements. Based on simplified assumptions, formulae for the forces and displacements of cote structures subjected to three typical load cases, i.e. uniformly distributed torque, triangularly distributed torque and a concentrated torque at the top of the structure, are derived analytically. The behavior of the cote according to the variation of reinforcement locations is investigated to estimate the optimum locations of reinforcements to minimize the core rotations and bimoments. The results by the program MIDAS-GEN have shown that this analysis can give quite satisfactory results for structural models with torsional reinforcements. Although three dimensional analysis by computer has come within reach as a normal structural design procedure, its use as an optimization tool may not be desirable in view of the expense and time required. Formulae that we presented here can be used to estimate the torsional rotations and forces of practical cote structures at the preliminary design stages.
Purpose: This study was to evaluate the accuracy of the implant torque controller used in dental clinics and to investigate whether it was applied appropriately. Materials and methods: Fifty dentists who work in dental clinics were enrolled in this study. Dental (implant) practice career, experience frequency of implant screw loosening and fracture, education of implant torque controller application and infection control methods were included in the survey. 25 Ncm and 30 Ncm of the tightening torque applied to the implant screw were measured by 50 clinicians. After measuring the torque value by using the torque controller, the torque mean according to where education about the implant torque controller was received was analyzed with independent t-test at the significance level of 0.05. Results: The torque controller used in private dental clinics showed 4.78% error ratio. When 50 dentists applied 25 Ncm to the implant screw was $29.0{\pm}8.4$ Ncm, and that in 30 Ncm was $34.3{\pm}9.1$ Ncm. Statistical significance was found between the group that was educated about implant torque application and the group that was not educated. Conclusion: During the prosthodontic treatment with implant, there was difference between actual applied torsion force and the amount torque controller indicated. Clinicians have to not only be well-informed about the accurate usage method of the torque controller, but also keep and manage the torque controller so as to maintain continuous and accurate torque values. Through this, it is considered to achieve clinical results to minimize problems of screw loosening or fracture.

This paper described operation and vibration characteristics of 'Tail-Fan' performance test system. KARI(Korea Aerospace Research Institute) developed 'Tail-Fan' system as a kind of helicopter anti-torque system(ATS) and designed ATS performance test-rig for Tail-Fan system performance test. Test-rig consists of driving parts, supporting parts and rotating parts. For Tail-Fan system performance tests, firstly, test-rig operation tests were carried out for verification of design specifications. Secondly, natural frequencies of fan blade and test-rig were measured respectively. Lastly, to find the operation rotating speed for performance tests, vibration tests using accelerometers on tail gear box(TGB) were carried out. Through the fanplot and vibration test results, Tail-Fan performance test conditions to avoid a resonance were found and performance tests were well done safely.

The directions of the principal strain increment, stress, and stress increment during rotation of the principal stress axes at any stress level was studied for $K_0$-consolidated clay using torsion shear apparatus with individual control of the vertical stress, the confining pressure, and the shear stress on hollow cylinder specimens under undrained and drained condition. The torsion shear tests were performed according to predetermined stress-paths, which were chosen to cover over the full range of rotation of principal stress axes. The test results indicated that the strain increment vectors at failure coincided with the stress vectors. That is, the direction of strain increment coincided with the direction of stress increment at small stress levels and with the direction of stress at higher stress levels, which indicated that the behavior of clay was transfered from elastic to plastic as the stress level was increased. The applicability of the elastoplastic theory for modeling of the behavior of clay during rotation of the principal stress axes was given.

Core walls for tall building is one of the structures to support lateral load. Since most structural elements used for resisting which ate relatively weak against torsion, it is important to investigate tosional effects in the analysis and design of tall buildings. Rutenberg proposed a more refined theory on the torsional analysis of core walls which can be used when the stiffness of lintel beams are small or large. In this paper a more refined method to analysis the torsion of core wall structures with variable cross sections and being subjected to arbitrarilly distributed load was suggested. To reduce complex and a great number of calculations and to enhance the generality and flexibility of application of this method, the discrete method using transfer matrix formulation was used. Then this method can be easily applied to irregular and variational sections, has no necessity to get particular solution for each of loading conditions, and the maximum size of matrix calculated is $4{\times}4$, which makes this approach more appropriate for design office calculations using comuters of any sizes or even desk calculators.

Using three-dimensional (3-D) FE analyses, this paper provides a method for analyzing the effects on stresses and strains produced by angular and concentric misalignment of a test specimen for a torsion test. To quantitativele compare of the FE results, the average bending strain for the angular, concentric, and combined misalignment was proposed. To verify the effects of axial misalignment of the test specimens, we used both circular and tubular specimens. From the FE results, we proposed general predictions for the effects caused by the various types of axial misalignment and its direction. In addition, we confirmed the effect of initial yielding moment based on the initial yielding condition for axial misalignment of specimens in torsion tests.

Rotary swaging is one of the incremental forming process which is a chipless process using the reduction of cross-sections of bars, tubes and wires. The TDS(Tube Drive Shaft) of monobloc used in automotive has been developed by the rotary swaging process. The mechanical characteristics of swaged parts such as the hardness, thickness and roughness are also estimated to conduct experimental analyses of rotary swaging process with the materials of 34Mn5 Furthermore the change in the vibration mode of TDS due to design parameters, which are the tube length, diameter and thickness, has been investigated and analysed. The weight of the TDS product is smaller by about $12.8\%$ than that of SDS with the same performance. It could be evidently found that the TDS is designed to be much lighter than SDS (Solid Drive Shaft). This advantage might give some possibility to improve the NVH (Noise-Vibration-Harshness) characteristics. A maximum torque and a total number of torsional repetitions for the TDS is checked and measured to know the torsional intensity and fatigue strength through the static torsion test and torsional durability test, respectively. A total number of the torsional repetitions up to the fracture for the TDS is greater than 250,000 times.
The purpose of this study was to estimate the fracture resistance of commercially available ceramic brackets to torsional force exerted from arch wires and to evaluate the characteristics of bracket fracture. Methods: Lingual root torque was applied to maxillary central incisor brackets with 0.022-inch slots by means of a $022\;{\times}\;028-inch$ stainless steel arch wire. A custom designed apparatus that attached to an Instron was used to test seven types of ceramic brackets (n = 15). The torque value and torque angle at fracture were measured. In order to evaluate the characteristics of failure, fracture sites and the failure patterns of brackets were examined with a Scanning Electron Microscope. Results: Crystal structure and manufacturing process of ceramic brackets had a significant effect on fracture resistance. Monocrystalline alumina (Inspire) brackets showed significantly greater resistance to torsional force than polycrystalline alumina brackets except InVu. There was no significant difference in fracture resistance during arch wire torsional force between ceramic brackets with metal slots and those without metal slots (p > 0.05). All Clarity brackets partially fractured only at the incisal slot base and the others broke at various locations. Conclusion: The fracture resistance of all the ceramic brackets during arch wire torsion appears to be adequate for clinical use.
Purpose: For aesthetic reasons, composite resin brackets are widely used. However, related studies are rare. This pilot study sought to compare the stress distributions in two commercially available composite resin brackets with metal slot. Materials and Methods: Two commercially available resin brackets -- full-metal slot resin bracket (fSRB) and partial-metal slot resin bracket (pSRB) with straight wire appliance dimension of $0.022{\times}0.028$ in -- were selected. In each bracket, 3-dimensional finite element models were constructed, and stress level was evaluated using finite element analysis. By loading the tipping force and torsion moment, which are similar to those applied by the stainless steel rectangular wire ($0.019{\times}0.025$ -in), stress distributions were calculated, and von Mises stress values were obtained. Results: In pSRB and fSRB, the stress value of the torque moment was much higher than that of the tipping force. The pSRB showed higher stress value than fSRB in both tipping force and torque moment because of the difference in size and configuration of the metal frame inserted into the slot. More stress was also found to be concentrated on the slot area than the wing area in fSRB. Conclusion: The slot form of fSRB was found to be more resistant to the stress of tipping and torque than the slot form of pSRB. In addition, the slot areas -- rather than the wing areas -- of the bracket showed breakage susceptibility. Therefore, resistance to the torque moment on the slot area should be considered in bracket design.

In this paper, a three-span continuous box girder is analysed by using elastic equation based on energy method, concerning the behaviour with the effects of bending and pure torsional moment. The statically indeterminate forces of a three-span continuous curved box girder are calculated by applying the principle of least work to this elastic equation. The influence line of shear force, bending moment, pure torsion, displacement and angle of rotation due to unit vortical load and unit torque for curved box girder are obtained. The internal forces of the curved box girder which the actual load is applied can be calculated using the influence line obtained from this study.
