Currently, a gas fueled diffusion flame is used for the relay torch system. It could be burned cleanly but should be stable at severe weather condition such as rain of up to 55 mm/h, winds of up to 70 km/h and also produce a highly bright yellow visible flame. This paper presents torch diffusion flame characteristics on the various wind speeds and rainfall conditions. From the results, flame lengths are controlled by the momentum flux ratio of fuel and ambient air flow and flame stability is much influenced by the mixing characteristics with air flow. Flame is fluctuated above than 200 mm/h rainfall and blow out is occurred about 300 mm/h rainfall condition.

In order to develop an automatic system for welding thin steel plates with curvature such as the corrugated membranes of an LNG storage tank, a rotating mechanism should be firstly designed for the torch to easily follow the weld seam with a constant distance and angle. In this study, a torch rotating mechanism consisting of three circular links, two square-type links and a torch link was proposed for automation of the welding process. A weld-seam tracking system with two axis slides and the proposed rotating mechanism was successfully simulated with a dynamic simulation software. A prototype tracking system was manufactured and a tracking test with the system was then carried out. The test results with tracking system showed that the rotating mechanism could be implemented and it was feasible to be used in automatic tracking of weld seam with curvature.
The influence on a stability of thermal plasma has been investigated in an electrode structure of non-transferred plasma torch. The variations of dynamic characteristic of the arc voltage was analyzed and compared in terms of voltage character and nozzle types for both the step-shaped nozzles and magnetic-approved cylindrical nozzle. From the experimental results, an electrode gap, flow rate of arc gas, and currents are considered as major operational parameters. As conclusion, it was assured that a torch with step-shaped nozzles of magnetic-approved type produce the stable plasma jet.

This paper presents development of a high speed rotating arc sensor system using a microprocessor based controller with tracking function for a complicate curved fillet welding line, The welding tip connected to the torch body is eccentrically positioned from the centerline of the torch, The area during one rotating cycle is divided into 4 regions of front, rear, right and left in welding direction of the torch tip to determine the horizontal deviation between the welding seam and the torch position. The average value at each region is calculated using the regional current values and a low pass filter incorporated with the moving average method is implemented. The effectiveness of the developed system is proven through the experimental results for several kinds of complicate curved fillet welding lines.

An experimental study has been made for heat transfer and particle deposition during the Modified Chemical Vapor Deposition process which is currently utilized to manufacture high quality optical waveguides. The distributions of tube wall temperatures, rates and efficiencies of particle deposition were measured. Results indicate that the temperature distributions of the tube wall in the axial direction yield the quasi-steady form in which temperature distributions fit in one curve if the relative distance from the moving torch is used as an axial coordinate. Due to the repeated heatings from the traversing torch, the wall temperatures are shown to reach the minimum ahead of torch and it is shown that the two torch formulation suggested by Park and Choi is valid to predict this minimum temperature. Measured wall temperatures, particle deposition efficiencies and tapered entry length are compared with the previous modelling results and shown to be in agreement.

This study presents an analytical method of solving the behaviors of arc plasma in a nozzle constricting transferred-type torch and purposes to obtain the basic data for the design of a plasma torch, which can be obtained from the temperature, pressure, velocities and voltage distributions. We have to solve some conservation equations simultaneously and need to know the exact thermal gas properties in order to obtain the correct behaviors of arc plasma. It is also necessary to give the relevant physical or geometric boundary conditions. For the simplicity of analysis, we assumed that (a) the plasma flow is laminar, (b)the local thermodynamic equilibrium, i.e. LTE, prevails over the entire arc column region. The electrode sheath effects were neglected and the nozzle area was excluded from the analysis by assuming that the current flow into the nozzle is zero. We solved the momentum transfer equation including the self-magnetic pinch effect, and obtained the temperature distribution from the energy conservation equation. From this temperature, we could get arc voltage distribution. (author). refs., figs., tabs.
In the present paper, a new type of DC arc plasma torch is disclosed. The principles of the new magnetic and fluid dynamic controlled large orifice long discharge tunnel plasma torch is discussed. Two series of DC Plasma Jet diamond film deposition equipment have been developed. The 20kW Jet equipped with a $\Phi$70 mm orifice torch is capable of deposition diamond films at a growth rate as high as 40$\mu\textrm{m}$/h over a substrate area of $\Phi$65 mm. The 100kW high power Jet which is newly developed based on the experience of the low power model is equipped with a $\Phi$120 mm orifice torch, and is capable of depositing diamond films over a substrate area of $\Phi$110 mm at growth rate as high as 40 $\mu\textrm{m}$/h, and can be operated at gas recycling mode, which allows 95% of the gases be recycled. It is demonstrated that the new type DC plasma torch can be easily scaled up to even higher power Jet. It is estimated that even by the 100kW Jet, the cost for tool grade diamond films can be as low as less than $4/carat.

In this study, GTAW was carried out on austenitic STS316 stainless steel. Overlay welding with the stellite-base filler metal was implemented using a double torch. The response variable was calculated on the measured Vickers hardness for process optimization using the Taguchi method and its response variable was then analyzed about effect on overlay welding characteristics. The optimal process design by the Taguchi method is extremely effective in the overlay welding process for the multiple response variables. In addition, the effects of contribution rate about each response variable was analyzed easily. The conditions of the optimal process were 105A, 18V, pre-heat treatment at $200^{\circ}C$, and post weld heat treatment at $100^{\circ}C$. The Vickers hardness of the specimens produced under the optimal condition of GTAW by the double torch was 8.19% higher than that by a single torch.

Seven different size of orifice were applied in a constant volume combustion chamber for evaluating the effects of torch-ignition on combustion. The initial flame development and flame propagation were analyzed by the mass fraction burn and combustion enhancement rate. The combustion pressures were measured to calculate the mass fraction burn and the combustion enhancement rates. In addition, the flame propagations were visualized by the shadowgraph method for the qualitative comparison. The result showed that the combustion pressure and mass burned fraction were increased when using the torch-ignition device. The combustion enhancement rates of torch-ignition cases were improved in comparison with conventional spark ignition. Finally, the visualization results showed that the torch-ignition induced faster burn than conventional spark ignition due to the earlier transition to turbulent flame and larger flame surface, during the initial stage.
To implement full automation in pipe welding, it si most important to develop special sensors and their related systems which act like human operator when detecting irregular groove conditions. In this study, an automatic pipe Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) system was proposed to full control pipe welding procedure with intelligent sensor systems. A five-axes manipulator was proposed for welding torch to automatically access to exact welding position when pipe size and welding angle were given. Pool status and torch position were measured by using a weld-pool image monitoring and processing technique in root-pass welding for weld seam tracking and weld pool control. To overcome the intensive arc light, pool image was captured at the instance of short circuit of welding power loop. Captured image was processed to determine weld pool shape. For weld seam tracking, the relative distance of a torch position from the pool center was calculated in the extracted pool shape to move torch just onto the groove center. To control penetration of root pas, gap was calculated in the extracted pool image, and then weld conditions were controlled for obtaining appropriate penetration. welding speed was determined with a fuzzy logic, and welding current and voltage were determined from a data base to correspond to the gap. For automatic fill-pass welding, the function of human operator of real time weld seam control can be substituted by a sensor system. In this study, an arc sensor system was proposed based on a fuzzy control logic. Using the proposed automatic system, root-pass welding of pipe which had gap variation was assured to be appropriately controlled in welding conditions and in torch position by showing sound welding result and good seam tracking capability. Fill-pass welding by the proposed system also showed very successful result by tracking along the offset welding line without any control of human operator.
