The homogenization method and the density function method are common approaches to evaluate the equivalent material properties for design cells composed of matter and void. In this research, using a new topology optimization method based on the homogenized material with a penalty factor and the chessboard prevention strategy, we obtain the optimal layout of a structure for the natural frequency of a designated mode. The volume fraction of nodes of each finite element is chosen as the design variable and a total material usage constraint is imposed. In this paper, the subspace method is used to evaluate the eigenvalue and its corresponding eigenvector of the structure for the designated mode and the recursive quadratic programming algorithm, PLBA algorithm, is used to solve the topology optimization problem.

In this paper, we address the problem of robust geometric modeling with emphasis on surface to surface intersections. We consider the topology and the numerical accuracy of an intersection curve to find the best approximation to the exact one. First, we perform the topological configuration of intersection curves, from which we determine the starting and ending points of each monotonic intersection curve segment along with its topological structure. Next, we trace each monotonic intersection curve segment using a validated ODE solver, which provides the error bounds containing the topological structure of the intersection curve and enclosing the exact root without a numerical instance. Then, we choose one approximation curve and adjust it within the bounds by minimizing an objective function measuring the errors from the exact one. Using this process, we can obtain an approximate intersection curve which considers the topology and the numerical accuracy for robust geometric modeling.
In a traditional topology optimization method, material properties are usually distributed by finite element density and visualized by a gray level image. The distribution method based on element density is adequate for a great mass of 2-D topology optimization problems. However, when it is used for 3-D topology optimization, it is always difficult to obtain a smooth model representation, and easily appears a virtualconnect phenomenon especially in a low-density domain. The 3-D structural topology optimization method has been developed using the node density instead of the element density that is based on SIMP (solid isotropic microstructure with penalization) algorithm. A computer code based on Matlab was written to validate the proposed method. When it was compared to the element density as design variable, this method could get a more uniform density distribution. To show the usefulness of this method, several typical examples of structure topology optimization are presented.

The structural topology optimization presented in this paper is based on an evolutionary procedure, developed by Xie and Steven, in which the low stressed material of a structure is removed from the structure step-by-step until an optimal design is obtained. By appling this procedure a layout or topology of a structure can be found from a initial block of material. The purpose of this paper is to implement the evolutionary procedure, introduce some novel features and investigate its feasibility by studying a few examples.
This paper deals with the relationship between the order structure and topological structure in the historical point of view. We first investigate how the order structure has developed along with the set theory and logic in the second half of the nineteenth century. After the general topology has emerged in the beginning of the twentieth century, two disciplines of the order theory and topology give each other a great deal of effect for their development via various dualities, compactifications by maximal filter spaces and Alexandroff's specialization order, which form eventually a fundamental setting for the development of the category theory or functor theory.

All the forces in the real world act dynamically on structures. Design and analysis should be performed based on the dynamic loads for the safety of structures. Dynamic (transient or vibrational) responses have many peaks in the time domain. Topology optimization, which gives an excellent conceptual design, mainly has been performed with static loads. In topology optimization, the number of design variables is quite large and considering the peaks is fairly costly. Topology optimization in the frequency domain has been performed to consider the dynamic effects; however, it is not sufficient to fully include the dynamic characteristics. In this research, linear dynamic response topology optimization is performed in the time domain. First, the necessity of topology optimization to directly consider the dynamic loads is verified by identifying the relationship between the natural frequency of a structure and the excitation frequency. When the natural frequency of a structure is low, the dynamic characteristics (inertia effect) should be considered. The equivalent static loads (ESLs) method is proposed for linear dynamic response topology optimization. ESLs are made to generate the same response field as that from dynamic loads at each time step of dynamic response analysis. The method was originally developed for size and shape optimizations. The original method is expanded to topology optimization under dynamic loads. At each time step of dynamic analysis, ESLs are calculated and ESLs are used as the external loads in static response topology optimization. The results of topology optimization are used to update the design variables (density of finite elements) and the updated design variables are used in dynamic analysis in a cyclic manner until the convergence criteria are satisfied. The updating rules and convergence criteria in the ESLs method are newly proposed for linear dynamic response topology optimization. The proposed updating rules are the artificial material method and the element elimination method. The artificial material method updates the material property for dynamic analysis at the next cycle using the results of topology optimization. The element elimination method is proposed to remove the element which has low density when static topology optimization is finished. These proposed methods are applied to some examples. The results are discussed in comparison with conventional linear static response topology optimization.
Additive manufacturing is an emerging method to manufacture objects with complex shapes and intricate geometry, such as cellular structures. The cellular structures can widely be used in lightweight application as it provides a high strength-to-load ratio. Under the various testing condition, each topology shows different mechanical properties. This study investigates the structural response of various types of cellular structures in compression loading, both experimentally and numerically. For that purpose, honeycomb, modified honeycomb, and spiral-type topology were selected to investigate. Besides, structural properties change by changing the cell size for each topology is also investigated. The specimens were subjected to a compression test by a universal testing machine to determine the absorbed energy and other mechanical properties. An implicit numerical study was also conducted to determine cellular structure's mechanical characteristics. The experimental and numerical results show that the honeycomb structure absorbs the maximum energy compared to the other structures. The experimentally and numerically calculated absorbed energy for the 4.8 mm honeycomb structure was 32.2J and 30.63J, respectively. The results also show that the increase of cell size for a particular cellular structure reduces the energy-absorbing ability of that structure.

Although mostly used in wind turbine market, single rotor wind turbines have problems with transportation and installation costs due to their large size. In order to solve such problems, multi-rotor wind turbine is being proposed; however, light weight design of multi-rotor wind turbine is required considering the installation at offshore or deep sea. This study proposes the systematic design process of the multi-rotor wind turbine focused on its supporting structure with simultaneous consideration of static and dynamic behaviors in an ideal situation. 2D and successive 3D topology optimization process based on the density method were applied to minimize the compliance of supporting structure. To realize the conceptual design obtained by topology optimization for manufacturing feasibility, the derived 3D structure was modified to have shell structures and optimized again through parametric design using the design of experiments and the response surface method for detail design of their thicknesses and radii. The resultant structure was determined to satisfy the stress and the buckling load constraint as well as to minimize the weight and the resultant supporting structure were verified numerically.
We study the three-dimensional genus topology of large-scale structure using the CMASS Data Release 11 sample of the SDSS-III Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS). The CMASS sample yields a genus curve that is characteristic of one produced by Gaussian random-phase initial conditions. The data thus supports the standard model of inflation where random quantum fluctuations in the early universe produced Gaussian random-phase initial conditions. Modest deviations in the observed genus from random phase are as expected from the nonlinear evolution of structure. We construct mock SDSS CMASS surveys along the past light cone from the Horizon Run 3 (HR3) N-body simulations, where gravitationally bound dark matter subhalos are identified as the sites of galaxy formation. We study the genus topology of the HR3 mock surveys with the same geometry and sampling density as the observational sample, and the observed genus topology to be consistent with LCDM as simulated by the HR3 mock samples.

It is important to design the optimal shape in the initial process because the influences on the design and construction are large according to the shape and pattern of spatial structures. However, the existing optimal shape designs for spatial structure are performed by the designer's intuition and experiences. Therefore, this study proposes the integrated process using the topology optimization and cellular automata model. First, the initial optimal shapes are obtained by using the topology optimization, and then the spatial truss structural patterns are created through the application of cellular automata rules. Finally, the optimal shapes to satisfy the various design conditions are generated by the structural analysis and size optimization.
