  • Isotactic polypropylene (PP) surfaces were modified with argon and oxygen plasmas using a radiofrequency (RF) glow discharge at 240 mTorr and 40 W. The changes in topography and surface structure were investigated by atomic force microscopy (AFM) in conjunction with specular reflectance of infrared (IR) microspectroscopy. Under our operating conditions, the AFM image analysis revealed that longer plasma treatment resulted in significant ablation on the PP surface, regardless of the kind of plasma employed, but the topography was dependent on the nature of the gases. Specular reflectance IR spectroscopic analysis indicated that the constant removal of surface material was an important ablative aspect when using either plasma, but the nature of the ablative behavior and the resultant aging effects were clearly dependent on the choice of plasma. The use of argon plasma resulted in a negligible aging effect; in contrast, the use of oxygen plasma caused a noticeable aging effect, which was due to reactions of trapped or isolated radicals with oxygen in air, and was partly responsible for the increased surface area caused by ablation. The use of oxygen plasma is believed to be an advantageous approach to modifying polymeric materials with functionalized surfaces, e.g., for surface grafting of unsaturated monomers and incorporating oxygen-containing groups onto PP.

  • In this paper, we proposed the geolocation method using target detection information in infrared images. Our method was applied to geolocation system of hostile targets in ground-to-ground field. The major distortion that has bad effect of geolocation was composed of optic, topography, GPS(Global Positioning System) and IMU(Inertial Measurement Unit) of reconnaissance unit. We proposed enhanced geolocation method to cope with optic and topography distortion using polynomial fitting and slant-range calculation model to overcome earth curvature problem, and the result showed that the performance of our method was good for system requirements.

  • We will illustrate the topographical structure and optical structure of the merocyanine dye LB films obtained by the scanning near-field optical/atomic force microscopy (SNOAM). SNOAM was recognized as a powerful tool to modify the surface as well as to characterize the topography of the surface at atomic resolution, especially for optical reaction materials. SNOAM images showed that the topographical and optical structures of these films were not only depended on the chemical property but also physical property. In the continuous measurement on these dyes, the appearance of near-field optical transmission images showed a certain dependence on the kinds of dyes and the mutual mixing ratios of dyes. These experimental results suggest that there is a certain kind of interaction between these two dyes.

  • We report here on the application of a digital holographic microscope as a metrology tool for the inspection and the micro-topography reconstruction of different micro-structures of phase shift photo-mask (PSM). The lithography by phase shift photo-mask uses the interference and the pattern of the PSM is not imaged by general optical microscope. The technique allows us to obtain digitally a high-fidelity surface topography description of the phase shift photo-mask with only one hologram image acquisition, allowing us to have relatively simple and compact set-ups able to give quantitative information of PSM.

  • The conventional optics and near field optics are compared numerically in the view points of the spot size and propagation characteristics. The decaying characteristics of near field light require the optics to access the object within several tens of nanometers. Therefore the gap control is one of the main issues in the near field optics area. In this paper the gap control is done by using the shear force of the NF(Near Field) probe and the characteristics are examined. The probe is modeled as a 2'nd order mass-spring-damper system driven by a harmonic force. The primary cause of the decrease in vibration amplitude is due to the damping force - shear force - between the surface and the probe. Using the model, damping constant and resonance frequency of the probe is calculated as a function of probe-sample distance. Detecting the amplitude and phase shift of the NF probe attached to the high Q-factor piezoelectric tuning fork, we can control the position of the NF probe about 0 to 50nm above the sample. The feedback signal to regulate the probe-sample distance can be used independently for surface topography imaging. 3-D view of the shear force image of a testing sample with the period of $1{\mu}m$ will be shown.

  • The recent industrial application requires technical methods to get the cutting fluid droplet surfaces in particular from the viewpoint of topography and micro texture. To characterize the surface topography of droplet, the combination of the confocal laser scanning microscope (CLSM) and wavelet filtering is well suited for obtaining the droplet geometry encountered in tribological research. This technique indicates a better agreement in obtaining an appropriate droplet surface obtained by the CLSM over a detail range of surface accuracy (resolution: $2{\mu}m$). And the results allow an excellent accuracy in a measurement of a droplet surface. The combination of extended focal depth measurement configured and multi-scale wavelet filtering has proven that it can construct a droplet surface in a successive and accurate way. A multi-scale approach of wavelet filtering was developed based on the decomposition and reconstruction of droplet surface by 2D wavelet transform using db9 (a mother wavelet of daubechies). Also this technique can be extended to characterize the quantification of droplet properties and other field in a wide range of scales. Finally this method is verified to be a better droplet surface modeling in a micro scale arising in a mist machining.

  • In this paper, a new method of noncontact measurement has been developed for a 3 dimensional topography in semiconductor wafer, implementing a new optical probe based on the precision defocus measurement. The developed technique consists of the new optical probe, precision stages, and the measurement/control system. The basic principle of the technique is to use the reflected slit beam from the specimen surface, and to measure the deviation of the specimen surface. The defocusing distance can be measured by the reflected slit beam, where the defocused image is measured by the proposed optical probe, giving very high resolution. The distance measuring formula has been proposed for the developed probe, using the laws of geometric optics. The precision calibration technique has been applied, giving about 10 nanometer resolution and 72 nanometer of four sigma uncertainty. In order to quantitize the micro pattern in the specimen surface, some efficient analysis algorithms have been developed to analyse the 3D topography pattern and some parameters of the surface. The developed system has been successfully applied to measure the wafer surface, demonstrating the line scanning feature and excellent 3 dimensional measurement capability.

  • The aim of this study is to detection of changed vegetation area of Saemangeum tidal flat with comparison of topography and surface sediments during the dyke construction. Sedimentary facies of four seasons of 2001 from inside Saemangeum tidal flat revealed homogeneous layers in the upper part, however near sea side tidal flat were detecting with carried out rapid sediment deposition during the dyke construction using satellite image spatial analysis. The sedimentation types inside Saemangeum tidal flat were classified with vegetation types, which were well matched with the sedimentation pattern revealed by change in vegetation patterns.

  • Development and maintenance of forests are very important at Korea which has mountainous topography of more than 60% of the national territory. Under the circumstances, variety period's data is being required for the continuous monitoring of forest area. In this study, change of forests type was analyzed using Landsat TM satellite image which have multi-spectral bands. Furthermore, change detection system for forests type was constructed on web for the periodical monitoring. By using this system, everyone can easily use for the monitoring of forest type's periodical change.
