Time-mean and absolute geostrophic velocities of the Kuroshio current south of Japan are derived from TOPEX/Poseidon altimeter data using a Gaussian jet model. When compared with simultaneous measurements from a shipboard acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) at two intersection points, the altimetric and ADCP absolute velocities correlate well with the correlation of 0.55 to 0.74. The time-mean velocity is accurate to 1 cm s$^{-1}$ to 5 cm s$^{-1}$. The errors in the absolute and the mean velocities are similar to those reported previously far other currents. The comparable performance suggests the Gaussian jet model is a promising methodology for determining absolute geostrophic velocities, noting that in this region the Kuroshio does not meander sufficiently, which provides unfavorable environment for the performance of the Gaussian jet model.
The main tsunami wave triggered by the December 2004 Sumatra tsunami was detected in the ocean south of India by satellite altimeters on Jason, Topex/Poseidon and Envisat. All three altimeters also detected shorter-wavelength (10 to 100 km), slower-propagating surface waves, spreading from the site of the earthquake. The shorter waves give additional information about the tsunami event, and can be used to better define the generating region in this, and future tsunamis. The properties of the area of shorter tsunami-generated waves may also be important in designing a future satellite-based detection system.

According to standard procedures as defined in the users handbook for sea level data processes, I was compared to Topex/poseidon sea level data from the first 350days of mission and Tide Gauge sea level data from the Amsterdam- Crozet- Kerguelen region in the South Indian Ocean. The comparison improves significantly when many factors for the corrections were removed, then only the aliased oceanic tidal energy is removed by oceanic tide model in this period. Making the corrections and smoothing the sea level data over 60km along-track segments and the Tide Gauge sea level data for the time series results in the digital correlation and RMS difference between the two data of c=-0.12 and rms=11.4cm, c=0.55 and rms=5.38cm, and c=0.83 and rms=2.83cm for the Amsterdam, Crozet and Kerguelen plateau, respectively. It was also found that the Kerguelen plateau has a comparisons due to propagating signals(the baroclinic Rossby wave with velocity of -3.9~-4.2cm/sec, period of 167days and amplitude of 10cm) that introduce temporal lags($\tau$=10~30days) between the altimeter and tide gauge time series. The conclusion is that on timescales longer than about 10days the RMS sea level errors are less than or of the order of several centimeters and are mainly due to the effects of currents rather than the effects of sterics(water temperature, density) and winds.
In an effort to properly assess the validity of spaceborne radar altimeter measurements, we made a direct comparison of two different sea surface heights (SSH) acquired by both Topex/Poseidon (T/P) satellite and in-situ tide-gauges (T/G). This comparative analysis was conducted using the data sets collected from three locations along the eastern coast of Korea which include: Ulleungdo, Pohang, and Sokcho. In the course of the analysis of satellite altimeter, information of SSH was extracted from the T/P MGDR data sets through the application of both atmospheric and geophysical corrections. To compare the T/P data sets in parallel basis, the T/G data sets were averaged using the measured values within the peripheral radius of 55km. When compared among different locations, the compatibility between the two methods was much more significant in an offshore location (Ulleungdo) than the two onshore locations (Pohang, Sokcho). If the low-pass filtered results were compared among the sites, the offshore site exhibited the best correlations between the two methods (correlation coefficient of 0.91) than those of the onshore sites. These large differences in the strength of correlations among different locations are due to the deformation of M2, S2, and K1 tidal components used in the tidal model. In case of the offshore location, the compatibility of the two different methods were improved systematically by the low-pass filtering with an increase of the filtering duration such as up to 200 days.

Sea level is upward trend since the end of 19th century, it is accelerating after 20th century. Because sea level height has regional differences, we concerned sea level change in Korean Peninsula. We used Topex/Poseidon, Jason-1 and Jason-2 satellite altimetry data which has $1/4^{\circ}$ resolution. From 1993 to 2013, for 21 years, monthly mean sea level anomaly was negative between January and April, positive between March and October. Bohai Bay in China, affected the continental climate, showed big sea level changes. Mean sea level data showed remarkably affecting the continental climate in Bohai Bay in China, the Kuroshio Current and eddy affects the sea level change.
Monitoring of wave height is important primarily to reduce storm risks at sea and along the coast. Wave heights in recent years have increased 50% for the last 40 years, thus requiring intensive monitoring. Satellite altimetry offers a powerful tool for regular and extensive monitoring of the wave height. We extracted significant wave height (SWH) using several altimeter missions from 1987-1995 over the Northwest Pacific and compared with ECMWF reanalysis (ERA) products. For large wave heights > 2.5 m, the ERA wave heights are smaller than the altimetric ones, while for small wave heights the ERA wave heights are larger. Comparison in SWH between altimetric derivations and ERA model products shows the discrepancy of 0.46-0.21$\times$SWH(m).

We investigated the distribution of sea ice using Topex/Poseidon (T/P) and ERS-1 .ada. altimeter data in the northwest Weddell Sea, Antarctica, between the area $45-75^{\circ}W\;and\;55-66^{\circ}S$. Using the Geo_Bad_1 flag of the Merged GDR of the T/P, we classified the surface into ocean, land, and sea. Total 257 cycles of altimeter measurements between Oct. 1992 and Sep. 1999 (for nearly 2570 days) were used to analyze the distribution of the Antarctic sea ice. We then calculated the surface area of ice coverage using SUTM20 map projection to monitor the periodic variations. Each year, the maximum and minimum coverage of the sea ice were found in late August and February in the study area, respectively. We also studied the sea ice distribution using ERS-1 altimeter data between $45-75^{\circ}W\;and\;55-81.5^{\circ}S$ to compare with the T/P Using the Valid/Invalid flag of the Ocean Product, we analyzed the sea ice distribution between March and August of 1995, which showed very good coherence with the T/P measurements. Our preliminary results showed that the altimeter measurements can be effectively used to monitor the distribution of the sea ice in the polar region. However, the size of radar footprint, typically 2-6km depending on the roughness of the sea surface, may be too big to monitor the sharp boundary between ice and water/land. If more other altimeter mission data with dense coverage such as Geosat GM are analyzed together, this limitation can be significantly improved. If we also combine other microwave remote sensing data such as radiometer, and SSM/I, the result will be significantly enhanced.
In this work Topex/Poseidon altimeter data 1993 - 2002 were used. There are three altimetry tracks (one ascending and two descending) that cross Tatar Strait. The data were collected in the points of sub-satellite tracks with the step 0.25 degree. 10-years average values were calculated for each month. The seasonal sea level variations were compared with tide gauges data. The well expressed annual cycle (with maximum at July-August and the minimum at February-March) prevails in the Tartar Strait. However, the seasonal variations expressed much weakly in both the altimetry track points and Kholmsk - Nevelsk tide-gauges that locate close to La Perouse Strait because of Okhotsk Sea influence. The sea level slopes between the Sakhalin Island and the continent coasts were analyzed in different seasons. We found that sea level increases near Sakhalin coast in spring and summer that corresponds to the northward flow. In autumn, otherwise, the sea level decreases near Sakhalin Island that corresponds to southward current. This result is verified by the CTD data gathered on the standard sections. Well-expressed upwelling is observed near coastline of Sakhalin Island in fall season. This phenomenon is caused by the northerly and the northwesterly wind which are typical for cold season.
The oscillations of the Caspian Sea level represent a result of mutually related hydrometeorological processes. The change in the tendency of the mean sea level variations that occurred in the middle 1970s, when the long-term level fall was replaced by its rapid and significant rise, represents an important indicator of the changes in the natural regime of the Caspian Sea. Therefore, sea level monitoring and long-term forecast of the sea level changes represent an extremely important task. The aim of this presentation is to show the experience of application of satellite altimetry methods to the investigation of seasonal and interannual variability of the sea level, wind speed and wave height, water dynamics, as well as of uplift of the Earth’s crust in different parts of the Caspian Sea and Kara-Bogaz-Gol Bay. Special attention is given to estimates of the Volga River runoff derived from satellite altimetry data. The work is based on the 1992-2005 TOPEX/Poseidon (T/P) and Jason-1 (J-1) data sets.
