To determine none top soil covering in rice seedling nursery method for the sparse machine transplanting, four different sowing methods were tested. Shoot and root length, fresh weight, leaf number and color using leaf color chart(LCC) and SPAD were collected as the data comparison of methods. The seedling height showed the highest growth according to the conventional (230g seed rate of pre-emerged seeds and top-soil covering) > high sowing density 1 (290g seed rate of pre-emerged seeds and top-soil covering) ≥ high sowing density 2(290g seed rate of pre-emerged seeds and none top-soil covering) > high sowing density 3(290g seed rate of iron-coated seeds and none top-soil covering). There was any statistical difference between groups in root length, leaf number, LCC, and SPAD values. Thus, a high sowing density of 290g for rice nursery seedling box was recommended to the sparse machine transplanting in rice cultivation with the none top-soil covering method, enabling convenient handling in transportation and machine transplanting work.

Recently NERICA (New Rice for Africa) was developed by a crossing of African rice (Oryza glaberrima Steud.) and Asian rice (Oryza sativa L.) in West Africa, and is considered to be drought resistant, but drought resistance of NERICA and differences between Asian rice are not clarified enough. In this research, NERICA (four cultivars and two lines), Asian rice (three cultivars and sativa parent of NERICA) and African rice (glaberrima parent of NERICA) were cultivated in the field in Shizuoka University under drought and traits of each cultivar and line relevant to drought resistance, stomatal conductance by porometer, soil water content of individual depths by TDR method, SPAD values by SPAD meter and leaf thickness by micrometer, were measured and compared with dry matter production and yield. Effects of compost were also compared among sativa parent, one NERICA cultivar and two NERICA lines. Glaberrima parent showed highest top dry weight. One NERICA line, one drought resistant Asian rice cultivar and sativa parent, showed higher top dry weight and yield (ear weight) than other Asian rice cultivars and NERICA cultivars and line tested. Compost tended to increase top dry weight and yield in one of NERICA line and sativa parent. But in one NERICA cultivar and line, top dry weight and yield were not increased. In one of Asian rice, one of NERICA line and sativa parent that showed high top dry weight and yield, stomatal conductance was high. On the contrary the glaberrima parent and in other NERICA cultivars and line it was low. In sativa parent compost increased stomatal conductance but in NERICA cultivar and lines it was not. Among cultivars and lines that showed high top dry weight and yield sativa parent and one of NERICA line SPAD value and leaf thickness were high but in one of Asian rice and glaberrima parent they were low. Cultivar and line differences in yield and top dry weight among Asian rice and NERICA were significantly correlated with those in stomatal conductance ($r=0.778^{**}$ and $r=0.654^*$, respectively) and those in leaf thickness ($r=0.600^*$ and $r=0.640^*$, respectively). In Asian rice cultivars average soil water content was significantly correlated with yield ($r=0.886^*$) but in NERICA cultivars and lines it was not significant correlated (r= -0.256). Cultivar and line differences in leaf thickness were significantly correlated with SPAD value ($r=0.773^{**}$). In Asian rice cultivars it was significantly correlated ($r=0.962^{**}$), but in NERICA cultivars and lines it was not significantly correlated (r=0.559). Asian rice cultivars tended to consume soil water to increase yield but in NERICA cultivars and lines the tendency was not clear. Correlation between SPAD value and leaf thickness was different between Asian rice and NERICA cultivars and lines, and in Asian rice cultivars it was significantly correlated but in NERICA cultivars and lines it was not significant. Importance of maintaining high stomatal conductance by high leaf thickness was clarified.
This paper investigated the effects of the percentages of yeast and fermentation time as well as the top and bottom temperature of oven on the baking properties of rice bread. The specific volume of the dough decreased as the amount of added yeast and fermentation time increased. When 1.5% yeast was added at 60 min of fermentation time, the shape of the rice bread showed the largest volume, high appearance and a round shape. The top and bottom temperature of the oven on the baking characteristics of rice bread were affected by the baking time. When the top and bottom temperature of the oven at 200 and $140^{\circ}C$, and 200 and $170^{\circ}C$, the baking time was 20 min. When the top and bottom temperature of oven at 140 and $170^{\circ}C$, the baking time was 40 min. When the top and bottom temperature of the oven were 170 and $170^{\circ}C$, the shape of the rice bread indicated the largest volume, high appearance and a round shape. The results of this study revealed that the replacement of rice flour with 1.5% yeast, 60 min of fermentation time, and the top and bottom temperature of oven at $170-170^{\circ}C$ are effective for rice bread.
This study was carried out to improve the rice grain quality of Ilpum cultivar, especially to reduce the chalky rice rate by controlling top dressing of nitrogen application ratio at the tillering and panicle initiation stage. In the rice plant growth, the number of tiller and leaf area index of maximum tillering stage were influenced by basal dressing and top dressing at tillering stage; however those of heading stage were mainly influenced by top dressing at panicle initiation stage. In yield and yield components, they were influence by the top dressing at panicle initiation stage and the rice yield was increased by percentage of the top dressing. The protein content of rice grain was increased as the rate of top dressing at panicle initiation stage was increased. The rate of chalky and damaged rice was remarkably increased as the top dressing ratio was increased, resulting in reducing the rate of head rice rate. As the results, the characteristics of milling and rice quality was improved when the amount of top dress was reduced as 50% at the panicle initiation stage, and the yield of head rice also increased.
Storage rough rice in low temperature using the winter cold air avoids rough rice temperature increase which happens from early May, and this is possible by installing a cooling system in the top of a bin, the room between top rice level and bin ceiling. The research objective is to establish low temperature rough rice storage technique, furnishing winter cold air to rough rice, by investigating the cooling system potential of maintaining low rough rice temperature and by analyzing rough rice storage characteristics over a storage period. The rough rice storage characteristics were evaluated from January to August 2003, using a storage and dry bin of 400-ton capacity. Results of this research are as follows: Cooling bin using the cooling system in the top of the bin maintained the rice temperature less than 15$^{\circ}C$ in entire portions in August. Moisture contents and germination rates of rough rice were decreased over the storage period, on the other hand, the rough rice stored in the ambient temperature bin had relatively lower moisture contents and germination rates to compare with the bin using winter cold air. Crack ratio and acid value of brown rice in the ambient temperature bin storage had increased more than the cooling bin storage. The result indicates that the storage bin using winter cold air and the cooling system maintains moisture content and germination of rice, minimizes cracked kernel and acid value, and preserves rice quality as well.

The experiment was carried out to select the rice cultivar adaptable to Top Rice cultivation region from 2006 to 2007 in Useong and Kyeongju, Korea. Four cultivars, recommended for high rice grain quality, were cultivated in the different region in this study. The average yield of head rice was higher in Samguangbyeo than the other three cultivars. The protein content was inversely associated with palatability (Toyo value). The protein content of Samguangbyeo was 6.2%, which was the lowest among the tested cultivars. L values in color of rice and cooked rice were not significantly different. The hardness of Samguangbyeo was lower than that of the other cultivars in texture properties of boiled rice on 4 cultivars. In conclusion,considering the rice yield and grain qualities, Samguangbyeo was selected as promising rice cultivar for Top Rice cultivation region.
A laboratory column experiment was conducted to learn the desalinization effect of rice straw, fresh or predecayed in limed marine soil, compared with gypsum. One third of Ca equivalent to indigenous Na plus Mg of the soil was applied to the top 10g out of 80g of total column soil, mixing one half of it to the top soil and the rest spreading on the surface. 1. Pre-decaying of rice straw in limed marine soil promoted the permeability of column soil. but showed a less effectiveness in desalinization of sodium than lime alone or lime plus fresh rice straw treatemenents. 2. Gypsum and calcium carbonate treatments without rice straw fixed Mg in the limed top soil and washed it down disolving more from the layer immediatly be low the treated top soil But the treatment of calcium carbonate and rice straw both together washed out Mg more from lower layers than the upper's, showing only physical desalinization. 3. The desalinization of Na was also severe in the layer immediately below the $CaSO_4$ treated top soil, leauing more Na ilo the top soil, which seemed to be attributed to the peptisation of the top soil and retard peptisation of desalinization when washed the soil applying not enough amount or non of gypsum.

Objective of this study was to investigate the residual levels of mercury (Hg) in soil for "Top-rice" area and its uptake into rice plant for making sure food safety as compared to "Top-rice" & common rice produced from 2005 to 2006. Hg was analyzed with the direct mercury analyzer (DMA 80, Milestone, Italy), which implements the US/EPA method 7473. The average concentration of Hg in paddy soil was 0.031 mg/kg, which was below at 1/25-1/65 fold of the threshold levels (concern level 4 mg/kg, action level 10 mg/kg) for soil contamination designated by "The Soil Environment Conservation Law" in Korea. The maximum residue level (MRLs) for Hg residue in the polished rice is not designated in Korea. Therefore, Hg contents in the polished rice of "Top-rice" brand and common rice were compared to other country's criteria. Hg contents in the polished rice of "Top-rice" brand was 0.0018 mg/kg, which was lower at 1/10-1/30 fold than the MRLs, 0.02 mg/kg of China criteria and 0.05 mg/kg of Taiwan criteria, respectively. Hg were 0.02788, 0.00896, 0.00182, 0.00189, 0.00166, 0.00452 and 0.00145 mg/kg in soil, rice straw, unhulled rice, rice hulls, brown rice, rice bran, and polished rice produced in 2006 "Top-rice" area, respectively. For the ratio of Hg as compared to Hg contents in soil, there were 0.321 of rice straw ${\gg}$ 0.162 of rice bran ${\gg}$ 0.068 of rice hulls > 0.065 of unhulled rice > 0.060 of brown rice> 0.052 of polished rice. And, the slope of Hg uptakes was steeped as following order; rice straw ${\gg}$ rice bran ${\gg}$ rice hulls > unhulled rice > brown rice > polished rice. It means that the more slope steeped was the more uptakes. For the distribution of Hg uptaken, there was 83.8% into rice straw, and 16.2% into unhulled rice, 2.8% into rice hulls, 12.4% into brown rice, 3.5% into rice bran and 9.7% into polished rice. Consequently, it was appeared that the Hg contamination in the polished rice should not be worried in Korea.
We established a top-down methodology to estimate carbon footprint as national mean value (reference) with the statistical data on agri-livestock incomes in 2007. We also established LCI (life cycle inventory) DB by a bottom-up methodology with the data obtained from interview with farmers from 4 large-scale farms at Gunsan, Jeollabuk-do province to estimate carbon footprint in 2011. This study was carried out to compare top-down methodology and bottom-up methodology in performing LCA (life cycle assessment) to analyze the difference in GHGs (greenhouse gases) emission and carbon footprint under conventional rice cultivation system. Results of LCI analysis showed that most of $CO_2$ was emitted during fertilizer production and rice cultivation, whereas $CH_4$ and $N_2O$ were mostly emitted during rice cultivation. The carbon footprints on conventional rice production system were 2.39E+00 kg $CO_2$-eq. $kg^{-1}$ by top-down methodology, whereas 1.04E+00 kg $CO_2$-eq. $kg^{-1}$ by bottom-up methodology. The amount of agro-materials input during the entire rice cultivation for the two methodologies was similar. The amount of agro-materials input for the bottom-up methodology was sometimes greater than that for top-down methodology. While carbon footprint by the bottom-up methodology was smaller than that by the top-down methodology due to higher yield per cropping season by the bottom-up methodology. Under the conventional rice production system, fertilizer production showed the highest contribution to the environmental impacts on most categories except GWP (global warming potential) category. Rice cultivation was the highest contribution to the environmental impacts on GWP category under the conventional rice production system. The main factors of carbon footprints under the conventional rice production system were $CH_4$ emission from rice paddy field, the amount of fertilizer input and rice yield. Results of this study will be used for establishing baseline data for estimating carbon footprint from 'low carbon certification pilot project' as well as for developing farming methods of reducing $CO_2$ emission from rice paddy fields.
Two methods of nitrogen application at the 4th leaf stage were evaluated in direct-seeding rice cultivation on dry paddy soil: one was the top dressing of nitrogen on dry paddy condition before irrigation (TNDP) for labor saving, and the other was the top dressing of nitrogen on dry paddy with mechanical rotavation of the inter-row space (TNDPIR) for increasing the efficiency of nitrogen. To evaluate these two application methods, leaf chlorophyll contents, growth characteristics and yields were compared with two conventional methods, basal application (BA) and top dressing on flooded paddy condition at the 4th leaf stage (TNFP). The SPAD value of rice in TNDP was similar with that in TNFP throughout the whole growth stage of rice. Also, there were no differences in rice growth and yield between the two methods. However, in TNDPIR, the SPAD value was the highest during tillering stage among the four application methods, and the tiller number, LAI at heading stage and the panicle number were higher than the two conventional methods.
