Completely avulsed tooth caused by a traumatic injury needs replantation for treatment choice. But, replantated tooth usually comes with inflammatory root resorption, replacement resorption and ankylosis, moreover ankylosis cause severe functional and esthetic problems. The outcome of replantated tooth depends on the following factors; minimal damage to pulp and periodontal tissue, the length of extraoral time, the medium of the tooth stored, the level of root formation and so on. The purpose of this case report is to describe the variable resorption pattern and to discuss types that influence the occurrence of resorption.

An impacted tooth is defined pathologically as a tooth that remains under the mucosa of inside bone without eruption of the crown after a specific period of eruption. Clinically, the term includes those teeth, even before eruption period, that are not expected to erupt due to shape, position and alignment of tooth and lack of space. Canine is prone to impaction more than other teeth because it has the longest time to develop and a complex route from the place of formation to the site of eruption. The impaction incidence of maxillary canine is repoted 0.92$\sim$3.3% (Ferguson, 1990). In 1995 Orton reported that the incidence was 0.92$\sim$2.2% and palatal impaction was more frequent than labial impaction(85%:15%). In 1969 Johnston presented it was more common to woman than to man(3:1). The etiology includes systemic disease such as endocrine disorder, cleidocranial dysostosis, irradiation, Crouzon syndrome, ricketts, facial hemihypertrophy and hereditary and local problems such as ectopic position of the tooth, distance of tooth from its place of eruption, malformation of the tooth, presence of supernumerary teeth, trauma of tooth germ, infection of tooth germ, displacement of tooth germ or tooth by a neoplasm, ankylosis, overretention of deciduous predecessor, lack of space for the tooth in the dental arch and mucosal barrier due to gingival fibrosis. The maxillary canine is especially important as it has the longest root, provides guidance for lateral movement of the mandible and masticatory function and assumes an important role esthetically as it is located at mouth angle. If left untreated, it may cause migration and external, internal resorption of adjacent teeth, loss of arch length, formation of dentigerous cyst or tumors, infection and referred pain as well as malposition of the tooth. Therefore, periodic examination of the development and eruption of the maxillary canine is especially important in a growing child. This case study presents the results of treatment of palatally impacted maxillary canine utilizing surgical exposure and orthodontic tooth movement on patients visiting SNUDH dept. of pediatric dentistry.
Periodontal disease is one of the major dental diseases. Currently, various methods are used for healing and successful regeneration of periodontal tissue damaged by periodontal disease. The periodontal ligament and alveolar bone have received considerable interest for use in periodontal tissue regeneration and induction. However, as the functions of the factors required for tooth attachment and key regulatory factors for periodontal tissue regeneration in the cementum have recently been identified, interest in cementum formation and regeneration has increased. Dental cementum forms in the late phase of tooth development because of the reciprocal regulatory interaction between cervical loop epithelial cells and surrounding mesenchymal cells, which is regulated by various gene signaling networks. Many attempts have been made to understand the regulatory factors and cellular and molecular mechanisms associated with new cementum formation. In this paper, we reviewed the study outcomes to date on the regulatory factors that induce cementum formation and regeneration, focusing on understanding the roles and functions of Wnt signaling in the regulation of cementum formation. In addition, we aimed to obtain information on the useful reciprocal regulatory factors that mediate cementum formation and regeneration through a series of molecular mechanisms.

This paper has been considered on the cutting characteristics such as chip formation and surface roughness for Inconel 690 alloy with difficult-to-cut because of high toughness and strength. We have made efforts solving the problem to difficult-to-cut of Inconel by improvement of tool with TiN coating and the selection of optimum cutting condition. We used the CCD camera and the surface roughness tester to observe the chip formation and the state of machined surface by using the improved tool with diamond coating and various cutting condions. We have found that the chip formation showed the tooth shape of tooth blade and the surface roughness was very poor. but it can be better by selection of optimum cutting condition.
The purpose of this study was to analyze the growth and development of tooth germ and dental arch related to the bone growth during the fetal period. From 70 maxillae and 61 mandibles of the fetus aged 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10 months, X-ray films were taken and measured. The results were as follows; 1. There was remarkable bone growth in the anterior and posterior area of palatum osseum, that were the intetior portion of both deciduous canines anteriorly and the intero-posterior portion of both deciduous second molars posteriorly, where there was active bone growth and radiate formation of bony trabeculae was found. 2. The Growth of anterior tooth germ was greater than that of posterior tooth germ, so anterior tooth germs were crowded. Especially in maxilla, the tooth germs of deciduous lateral incisors were located inside of dental arch and the tooth germs of deciduous canines were located outside of dental arch. 3. Crowding amount increased with the fetal age because the growth of tooth germs was greater than that of jaw bone. 4. In the growth of upper dental arch, the increase of width was greater than that of length. 5. There was proportional relationship between the area of Palatal Trapezoid and the fetal age.
Osteomyelitis of the jaw is an inflammatory process of the bone marrow that is caused by odontogenic local infection and trauma such as tooth extraction and fractures in the oral and maxillofacial region. The clinical signs include pain, swelling, pus formation, and limited mouth opening. Chronic osteomyelitis presents a diagnostic challenge because of the variability of symptoms across different disease stages and varying health conditions of the patients. This report presents a case of osteomyelitis that was misdiagnosed as a temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD) after tooth extraction. The patient was treated for inflammation after tooth extraction in the early stage; however, as the osteomyelitis progressed chronically, symptoms mimicked those of a TMD. The patient was finally diagnosed with osteomyelitis 6 months after tooth extraction. A review of this case and relevant literature revealed the necessity for a differential diagnosis of chronic osteomyelitis that mimics TMD symptoms.

Purpose: Extensive research is actively ongoing for development of an ideal bone substitute that meets the gold standard. Tooth was selected as a donor site for evaluation of potentials in bone substitutes based on its similar chemical compositions to alveolar bone. Previous studies have evaluated inorganic components of autogenous tooth bone graft material (AutoBT) and osteoconductivity. In continuation from the previous studies, the current study was conducted for analysis of organic components and evaluation of osteoinductivity of AutoBT. Methods: Forty-six extracted teeth were collected from actual patients (Korea Tooth Bank, R&D Institute). Extracted teeth were processed into AutoBT and implanted in dorsal subcutaneous muscular tissues of 15 athymic mice. Biopsy samples were harvested at two, five, and eight weeks. The Bradford assay, sodium dodecyl sulphate polyacrylamide gradient gel, and western blotting were performed for investigation of organic contents of AutoBT. Results: Histology analyses showed signs of new bone formation as early as two weeks. Results of the Bradford assay indicated the existence of noncollagenous proteins (NCP). 0.29% (2.89 mg/g) of proteins were extracted by weight in the root portion of AutoBT; 0.02% (0.029 mg/g) and 1.79% (17.93 mg/g) of proteins were measured by weight in crown and block-form of AutoBT, respectively. However, recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-2 was not observed in AutoBT. Conclusion: Within the limitation of the current study, AutoBT induced new bone formation by NCP embedded in dentin.
Biocompatibility of dense synthetic hydroxylapatite is well known and the direct bond with adjacent bone developed. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the potential of clinical application of tooth ash for preservation of alveolar ridge. For this purpose the author performed an experimental implantation of the particulate and root form of both pure dense hydroxylapatite and tooth ash in alveolar sockets immediately after extraction. The pure dense hydroxylapatite was particulate form and root form made by Calciteck Inc. The tooth ash was prepared by incineration at $950^{\circ}C$, and the syrindrical form of the tooth ash was sintered and trimmed to fit the size of the each extraction socket of 10 mongrel dogs. After sugery the clinical, roentgenographical, and histological observation was carried out. The results obtained were as follows; 1. Clinical observation disclosed no dehiscence and exfoliation due to tissue rejection. 2. Vertical resorption of alveolar bone occurred in all experimental sockets as well as the control sites on the roentgenograph. 3. Osteoclastic activity appeared at the inner surfaces of the crestal alveolar bone on the 1st week but disappeared on the 2nd week. 4. There were macrophages in the particulate form on the 1st and 2nd week after surgery but no macrophages appered in the root form. S. New bone formation was developed from the bony wall of experimental sockets and grew to bond with the implant materials. In particulate form the new bone formation did not occur in central zone independently. 6. Tooth ash implant sites were covered with the newly formed bony trabeculation from third week, but Calcitite particles were covered with soft tissue. 7. Generally the healing occurred more rapidly in control sites than in implant sites.

Purpose: In this study the bone healing ability of autogenous tooth bone graft material as a substitute material was evaluated in a mini-pig cranial defect model through histologic examinations and osteonectin reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) quantitative analysis. Materials and Methods: A defect was generated in the cranium of mini-pigs and those without a defect were used as controls. In the experimental group, teeth extracted from the mini-pig were manufactured into autogenous tooth bone graft material and grafted to the defect. The mini-pigs were sacrificed at 4, 8, and 12 weeks to histologically evaluate bone healing ability and observe the osteonectin gene expression pattern with RT-PCR. Result: At 4 weeks, the inside of the bur hole showed fibrosis and there was no sign of bone formation in the control group. On the other hand, bone formation surrounding the tooth powder granule was observed at 4 weeks in the experimental group where the bur hole was filled with tooth powder. Osteonectin gene expression; there was nearly no osteonectin expression in the control group while active osteonectin expression was observed from 4 to 12 weeks in the experimental group. Conclusion: We believe this material will show better results when applied in a clinical setting.
Purpose: Growth differentiation factor 11 (GDF11) and myostatin (MSTN) are closely-related transforming growth factor β family members reported to play crucial roles in bone formation. We previously reported that, in contrast to MSTN, GDF11 promotes osteogenesis of vertebrae and limbs. GDF11 has been also reported as an important regulator in tooth development by inducing differentiation of pulp stem cells into odontoblasts for reparative dentin formation. The goal of this study was to investigate the differential roles of GDF11 and MSTN in dental and cranial bone formation. Methods: Micro-computed tomography analysis was performed on cranial bones, including frontal, parietal, and interparietal bones, and lower incisors of wild-type, Gdf11 knockout (Gdf11-/-), and Mstn knockout (Mstn-/-) mice. Tissue volume, thickness, and mineral density were evaluated for both cranial bone and lower incisors. Lower incisor lengths were also measured. Because Gdf11-/- mice die shortly after birth, analysis was performed on newborn (P0) mice. Results: Compared to those of Mstn-/- mice, cranial bone volume, thickness, and mineral density levels were all significantly diminished in Gdf11-/- mice. Tissue mineral density of Gdf11-/- mice were also significantly decreased compared to wild-type mice. Likewise, lower incisor length, tissue volume, thickness, and mineral density levels were all significantly reduced in Gdf11-/- mice compared to Mstn-/- mice. Incisor length was also significantly decreased in Gdf11-/- mice compared to wild-type mice. Mstn-/- mice exhibited mildly increased levels of tissue volume, thickness, and density in cranial bone and lower incisor compared to wild-type mice although statistically not significant. Conclusions: Our findings suggest that GDF11, unlike MSTN, endogenously promotes cranial bone and tooth development.
