Fracture of cusp, on posterior teeth, especially those carious or restored, is major cause of tooth loss. Inappropriate treatments, such as unnecessarily wide cavity preparations, increase the potential of further trauma and possible fracture of the remaining tooth structures. Fracture potential may be directly related to the stresses exerted upon the tooth during masticatory function. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the fracture resistance of tooth, restored with composite resin inlay. In this study, MOD inlay cavity prepared on maxillary first premolar and restored with composite resin inlay. Three dimensional finite element models with eight nodes isoparametric solid element, developed by serial grinding-photographing technique. These models have various occlusal isthmus and depth of cavity, 1/2, 1/3 and 1/4 of isthmus width and 0.7, 0.85 and 1.0 of depth of cavity. The magnitude of load was 474 N and 172 N as presented to maximal biting force and normal chewing force. These loads applied onto ridges of buccal and lingual cusp. These models analyzed with three dimensional finite element method. The results of this study were as follows : 1. There is no difference of displacement between width of occlusal isthmus and depth of cavity. 2. The stress concentrated at bucco-mesial comer, bucco-disal comer, pulpal line angle and the interface area between internal slopes of cusp and resin inlay. 3. The vector of stress direct to buccal and lingual side from center of cavity, to tooth surface going on to enamel. The magnitude of vector increase from occlusal surface to cervix. 4. The crack of tooth start interface area, between internal slop of buccal cusp and resin inlay. It progresses through buccopulpal line angle to cervix at buccomesial and buccodistal comer. 5. The influence with depth of cavity to fracture of tooth was more than width of isthmus. 6. It would be favorable to make the isthmus width narrower than a third of the intercuspal distance and depth of cavity is below 1 : 0.7.
Hydroxyapatite (HAp)-based materials have attracted considerable attention on account of their excellent stability and recrystallization. Nanoscale HAp powders with a mean particle size of 200 nm were used to regenerate the enamel layers of damaged teeth. An artificially scratched tooth was immersed in a nanoscale HAp powder suspension in d.i. water (HAp of 70 wt%) at 37 ${^{\circ}C}$ for a period of 1~3 months. SEM and AFM showed that the scratched surface was ultimately inlaid with HAp after three months and the roughness increased from 2.80 to 5.51. Moreover, the hardness of the neo-generated HAp layer on the crown was similar to that of the innate layer. $Ca^{2+}$ and ${PO_4}^{3-}$ ions from the HAp powders dissolved in d.i. water were precipitated on the tooth to produce cemented pasteson the enamel surface due to its high recrystallizing characteristics, resulting in a hard neo-regenerated HAp layer on the enamel layer. This nanoscale HAp powder solution might be used to heal decayed teeth as well as to develop tooth whitening appliances.

This paper describes the method that can construct kinematically admissible velocity fields for forging of gear-like components which have tooth shape around the cylinder. The kinematically admissible velo- city fields for the various gear-like components, involute spur gear, trapezoidal spline, square spline, ser- ration and trochoidal gear, were constructed by pilling up the velocity components according to the shape of tooth and billet. The billets, of hollow and solid, were Al 2218 and 2024. To verify the method, the analyses and experiments were carried out and compared with each other. For analyses, the half pitches of com- ponents were divided into several deformation regions based on their tooth profile. A neutral surface was used to represent the inner flow of material during forging. Its location varied with the energy optimazation and its contour varied with the number of teeth. In experiment, the contour of material filling up the tooth zone is hyperbolic curve caused by the frictional drag on the interface of die-wall/workpiece but, in the analysis, it is an arc which retains the same contour during all forging operation.

Among the etiologic factors of enamel corrosion, daily intake has been considered with a profound interest, especially the intake of acidic drinks. It is thought that the rapid consumption of acidic drinks will not only results in the affection to the teeth but also to the surface of the tooth-colored restorative materials. Therefore, the puopose of this study is to examine the alterations occurred in the surface of the tooth-colored materials according to the exposed time, with 3 most common acidic drinks in contact with daily life. Resin-modified glass-ionomer, polyacid-modified composite resin, composite resin were immersed on 0.9% NaCl, Coke, orange juice, sports beverages as 4 groups in each. The surface hardness and the surface roughness of specimens were measured with following methods: before immersion, 1 day after immersion, 1-,2-,3-,4- weeks after immersion. Results were as follows. 1. Tooth-colored restorative materials, with the exception of composite resin, showed statistically significant changes in surface hardness and roughness when immersed on acidic drinks(p<0.05). 2. The degree of change in surface hardness and roughness occurred as follows, in order of severity from greatest to least resin-modified glass-ionomer, polyacid-modified composite resin, composite resin 3. Sports beverages resulted in greater alterations to surfaces than Coke and orange juice. 4. In the SEM image of the groups immersed in acidic drinks, resin-modified glass-ionomer and polyacid-modified composite resin showed loss of filer. Severe cracks were observed, especially on the resin-modified glass-ionomer.
A study was conducted to investigate the possibility of a composite material containing a composite resin as a matrix and hydroxyapatite (HAp) powder as a substitute material for tooth repair. As the content of HAp increased, hardness value (111.9 HV at 9%) increased and flexural strength (73.3 MPa at 9%) decreased. Observation of the microstructure after immersion in a simulated body fluid (SBF) solution confirmed a dense structure due to mutual coagulation and curing. It was thought that fine HAp recrystals were formed with the lapse of time, and they were entangled to form a condensation structure and had a dense structure. In addition, since the activity was shown by the ion migration on the surface of a tooth, it was highly likely that a biocompatible bond occurred during tooth contact. Therefore, it could be used as a substitute material for tooth repair.

A quantitative analysis of a surface roughness for a precision machining of a sculptured surface in milling process is treated under superposition theory in this paper. The geometrical surface rouhgness is calculated as a function of feed per tooth, path interval, radii of tool and cutting edge, and radii of curvatures of workiece. Through machining experiments in a 3-axis machining center, we confirmed the adequacy of the adequacy of the analysis. While cutter mark is neglegible in ball endmilling, it is significant in flat endmilling. When feed per tooth is very small, flat endmilling gives superior finish to ball endmilling. In flat endmilling, cutting condition and cutter path should be strategically chosen to balance the cutter mark height and cusp height.

Vibration and noise of gears is doc to the transmission error and the vibration exciting force caused by the periodically alternating tooth stiffness. Transmission error is the rotation delay between driving and driven gear caused by manufacturing error, alignment error in assembly and so on. Tooth stiffness changes with the proceeding mesh of teeth. The purpose of this study is to develop how to calculate simultaneously the optimum amounts of tooth profile modification. end relief and crowning by minimizing the vibration exciting force of helical gears. We estimate the vibration exciting force by the meshing analysis of gears. Formulated constraints of this problem consist of contact ratio and strengths of gear teeth such as tooth bending strength, surface durability, and scoring. ADS(Automated Design Synthesis) is used as an optimization tool. We also investigate the relation between the aspect ratio and the optimum values of tooth modification. The proposed method can calculate the optimum amount of tooth modification automatically and is expected to be practically useful to resolve the problem of vibration of helical gears.

The vibration and noise of gears is due to the vibration exciting force caused by the tooth stiffness which changes periodically as the mesh of teeth proceeds and by the transmission error, that is, the rotation delay between driving gear and driven gear caused by manufacturing error and alignment error in assembly and so on. The purpose of this study is to develop how to calculate simultaneously the optimum amounts of tooth profile modification, end relief and crowning by minimizing the vibration exciting force of helical gears. We estimate the vibration exciting force by the mesh analysis of gears. The constraints of this problem consist of contact ratio and strengths of gear teeth such as tooth fillet stress, surface durability and scoring. ADS(Automated Design Synthesis) is used as an optimization tool. And, since the aspect ratio is an important parameter of tooth modification, we investigate the relation between it and the optimum values of tooth modification. The proposed method can calculate the optimum amount of tooth modification automatically and is to be utilized to resolve the problem of vibration of helical gears.
Accurate impression is very important to achieve desirable prosthesis and there are many factors in taking a good impression. For example, types of impression material, types of impression tray, impression taking methods and so on. Recently individual tooth tray technique is accepted as obtaining good impression that can be applied to multiple abutment impression, heavy salivated patient, to minimize the effect of natural teeth s undercuts and to reduce pain during cord packing procedures. The purpose of this study was to compare the accuracy according to materials and forms of the individual tooth tray which is clinically applied nowadays. Used materials in experiment were divided into 3 types (acrylic resin. $Futar^{(R)}$ occlusion. $Blu-mousse^{(R)}$) and forms were divided into 2 types (forming occlusal vent hole or not and forming marginal vent space or not). Stone master model from impression body and metal master model were measured by $X-PLAN360d^{(R)}$ to compare occlusal surface discrepancy and marginal discrepancy. The results were as follows: 1. In comparison of occlusal surface discrepancy and marginal discrepancy according to materials, groups with three materials showed no statistical difference 2. In comparison of occlusal surface discrepancy and marginal discrepancy according to occlusal vent hole, groups with occlusal vent hole showed significantly less marginal discrepancy than groups with no occlusal vent hole(p<0.05). 3. In comparison of occlusal surface discrepancy and marginal discrepancy according to 0.5mm-marginal-vent-space, groups with no 0.5mm-marginal-vent-space showed significantly less marginal discrepancy than groups with 0.5mm-marginal-vent-space (p<0.05). In summary these results suggest that individual tooth tray made of 3 types of materials with occlusal vent hole and individual tooth tray made of acrylic resin with no marginal vent space showed good accuracy of impression. In addition, individual tooth tray which is made of bite registration materials may be more useful because of advantage in facility and timesaving aspect of fabrication.
The ultrastructural parameters related to synaptic release of endings which are presynaptic to tooth pulp afferent terminals (p-endings) were analyzed to understand the underlying mechanism for presynaptic modulation of tooth pulp afferents. Tooth pulp afferents were labelled by applying wheat-germ agglutinin conjugated horseradish peroxidase to the rat right lower incisor, whereafter electron microscopic morphometric analysis with serial section and reconstruction of p-endings in the trigeminal oral nucleus was performed. The results obtained from 15 p-endings presynaptic to 11 labeled tooth pulp afferent terminals were as follows. P-endings contained pleomorphic vesicles and made symmetrical synaptic contacts with labeled terminals. The p-endings showed small synaptic release-related ultrastructural parameters: volume, $0.82{\pm}0.45{\mu}m^3$ ($mean{\pm}SD$); surface area, $4.50{\pm}1.76{\mu}m^2$; mitochondrial volume, $0.15{\pm}0.07{\mu}m^3$; total apposed surface area, $0.69{\pm}0.24{\mu}m^2$; active zone area, $0.10{\pm}0.04{\mu}m^2$; total vesicle number, $1045{\pm}668.86$; and vesicle density, $1677{\pm}684/{\mu}m^2$. The volume of the p-endings showed strong positive correlation with the following parameters: surface area (r=0.97, P<0.01), mitochondrial volume (r=0.56, P<0.05), and total vesicle number (r=0.73, P<0.05). However, the volume of p-endings did not positively correlate or was very weakly correlated with the apposed surface area (r=-0.12, P=0.675) and active zone area (r=0.46, P=0.084). These results show that some synaptic release-related ultrastructural parameters of p-endings on the tooth pulp afferent terminals follow the "size principle" of Pierce and Mendell (1993) in the trigeminal nucleus oralis, but other parameters do not. Our findings may demonstrate a characteristic feature of synaptic release associated with p-endings.
