  • This study was aimed to analyze the stress distribution of implant and supporting tissue in single tooth implant restoration using Branemark $system^{(R)}$(Nobel Biocare, Gothenberg, Sweden) and Bicon system(Bicon Dental Implants, Boston, MA). Two dimensional finite element analysis model was made at mandibular first premolar area As a crown materials porcelain, ceromer, ADA type III gold alloy were used. Tests have been performed at 25Kgf vertical load on central fossa of crown portion and at 10Kgf load with $45^{\circ}$ lateral direction on cusp inclination. The displacement and stresses of implant and supporting structures were analyzed to investigate the influence of the crown material and the type of implant systems by finite element analysis. The results were obtained as follows : 1. The type of crown material influenced the stress distribution of superstructure, but did not influence that of the supporting alveolar bone. 2. The stress distribution of ceromer and type III gold alloy and porcelain is similar. 3. Stress under lateral load was about twice higher than that of vertical load in all occlusal restorative materials. 4. In Bicon system, stress concentration is similar in supporting bone area but CerOne system generated about 1.5times eater stress more in superstructure material. 5. In Branemark models, if severe occlusal overload is loaded in superstvucture. gold screw or abutment will be fractured or loosened to buffer the occlusal overload but in Bicon models such buffering effect is not expected, so in Bicon model, load can be concentrated in alveolar bone area.

  • Objectives: To evaluate the influence of the restorative technique on the mechanical response of endodontically-treated upper premolars with mesio-occluso-distal (MOD) cavity. Materials and Methods: Forty-eight premolars received MOD preparation (4 groups, n = 12) with different restorative techniques: glass ionomer cement + composite resin (the GIC group), a metallic post + composite resin (the MP group), a fiberglass post + composite resin (the FGP group), or no endodontic treatment + restoration with composite resin (the CR group). Cusp strain and load-bearing capacity were evaluated. One-way analysis of variance and the Tukey test were used with ${\alpha}=5%$. Finite element analysis (FEA) was used to calculate displacement and tensile stress for the teeth and restorations. Results: MP showed the highest cusp (p = 0.027) deflection ($24.28{\pm}5.09{\mu}m/{\mu}m$), followed by FGP ($20.61{\pm}5.05{\mu}m/{\mu}m$), CR ($17.62{\pm}7.00{\mu}m/{\mu}m$), and GIC ($17.62{\pm}7.00{\mu}m/{\mu}m$). For load-bearing, CR ($38.89{\pm}3.24N$) showed the highest, followed by GIC ($37.51{\pm}6.69N$), FGP ($29.80{\pm}10.03N$), and MP ($18.41{\pm}4.15N$) (p = 0.001) value. FEA showed similar behavior in the restorations in all groups, while MP showed the highest stress concentration in the tooth and post. Conclusions: There is no mechanical advantage in using intraradicular posts for endodontically-treated premolars requiring MOD restoration. Filling the pulp chamber with GIC and restoring the tooth with only CR showed the most promising results for cusp deflection, failure load, and stress distribution.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the magnitude and distribution of stress using photoelastic model with the rigid connection using T-block attachment and non-rigid connection using key & keyway attachment. The vertical load of 16 Kg was applied on the central fossa of the tooth, the pontic and the implant, and the pattern and distribution under each condition was analyzed. The following results were obtained : 1. In case of vertical load on the central fossa of the implant, the stress was concentrated at the apex of the implant involving the mesial alveolar bone in both fixed partial denture with the rigid connection and that with the nonrigid connection and the stress concentration at the mesial cervical area of the implant was a little more in the nonrigid connection than in the rigid connection. 2. In case of vertical load on the central fossa of the pontic, the stress was concentrated at the apex of 2nd bicuspid in both 3 unit fixed partial denture with nonrigid connection and that with the rigid connection. The stress was more concentrated at the mesial alveolar bone of the implant, but the stress distribution at the natural teeth more favorable at the rigid connection than at the non-rigid connection in case of 4 unit fixed partial denture. 3. In case of vertical load of the central fossa of the 2nd bicuspid, much stress with 3 fringe order was observed at the apex of the 2nd bicuspid in the 3 unit fixed partial denture, but relatively even stress distribution was observed at the apex of the implant, the 1st and 2nd bicuspid, and the adjacent cuspid in the 4 unit fixed partial denture.

  • In this study, we designed the finite element models of mandible with varying their connecting types between the prosthesis on implant fixture and 2nd premolar, which were free-standing case(Mf), precision attachment case(Mp), semiprecision attachment case(Ms) and telescopic case(Mt). The basic model of the designed finite element models, which contained a canine and the 1st & 2nd premolar, was implanted in the edentulous site of the 1st & 2nd molar by two implant fixtures. We applied the load in all models by two ways. A vertical load of 200N was applied at each central fossa of 2nd premolar and 1st implant. A tilting load of 20N with inclination of $45^{\circ}$ to lingual side was applied to buccal cusp tips of each 2nd premolar and 1st implant. And then we analyzed three-dimensional finite element models, making a comparative study of principal stress and displacement in four cases respectively. Three-dimensional finite element analysis was performed for the stress distribution and the displacement using commercial software(IDEAS program) for SUN-SPARC workstation. The results were as follows : 1 Under vertical load or tilting load, maximum displacement appeared at the 2nd premolar. Semiprecision case showed the largest maximum displacement, and maximum displacement reduced in the order of precision attachment, free-standing and telescopic case. 2. Under vertical load. the pattern of displacement of the 1st implant appeared mesio-inclined because of the 2nd implant splinted together. But displacement pattern of the 2nd premolar varied according to their connection type with prosthesis. The 2nd premolar showed a little mesio-inclined vertical displacement in case of free-standing and disto-inclined vertical displacement due to attachment in case of precision and semiprecision attachment. In telescopic case, the largest mesio-inclined vertical displacement has been shown, so, the 1st premolar leaned mesial side. 3. Under tilting load, The pattern of displacement was similar in all four cases which appeared displaced to lingual side. But, the maximum displacement of 2nd premolar appeared larger than that of the first implant. Therefore, there was large discrepancy in displacement between natural tooth and implant during tilting load. 4. Under vertical load, the maximum compressive stress appeared at the 1st implant's neck. Semiprecision attachment case showed the largest maximum compressive stress, and the maximum compressive stress reduced in the order of precision attachment, telescopic and free-standing case. 5 Under vertical load, the maximum tensile stress appeared at the 2nd implant's distal neck. Semiprecision attachment case showed the largest maximum tensile stress, and the maximum tensile stress reduced in the order of precision attachment, telescopic and free-standing case. 6. Under vertical load or tilting load, principal stress appeared little between natural tooth & implant in free-standing case, but large principal stress was distributed at upper crown and distal contact site of the 2nd premolar in telescopic case. Principal stress appeared large at keyway & around keyway of distal contact site of the 2nd premolar in precision and semiprecision attachment case, appearing more broad and homogeneous in precision attachment case than in semiprecision attachment case.

  • When restoring a tooth, the dentist tries to choose the ideal material for existing situation. One criterion that is considered is its suitability for restoring coronal strength. As more tooth structure is removed, the cusps are weakened and susceptible to fracture. Further, this increased deformation may cause the formation of intermittent gaps at the margin between the hard tissue and the restoration, facilitating marginal leakage. The improvements in ceramic materials now make it possible for alternatives to amalgams, composites, and cast metal to be of offered for posterior teeth. Of the materials used, ceramics most closely approximates the properties of enamel. The introduction of computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacture(CAD/CAM) systems to restorative dentistry represents a major technological breakthrough. It is possible to design and fabricate ceramic restorations at a single appointment. Additionally, CAD/CAM systems eliminate certain errors and inaccuracies that are inherent to the indirect method and provide an esthetic restoration. The aim of this investigation was to study the loading characteristics of CAD/CAM ceramic inlay and to compare the stress distribution and displacement associated with different designs of cavity(the isthmus width and cavity depth). A human maxillary left first premolar was prepared with standard mesio-occlusal cavity preparation, as recommended by the manufacturer Ceramic inlay was fabricated with CEREC 2 CAD/CIM equipment and cemented into the prepared cavity. Three dimensional model was made by the serial photographic method. The cavity width was varied $\frac{1}{3}$, $\frac{1}{2}$ and $\frac{2}{3}$ of intercuspal distance between buccal and lingual cusp tip. The cavity depth was varied 1.5mm and 2.3mm. So six models were constructed to simulate six conditions. A point load of 500N was applied vertically onto the first node of the lingual slope from the buccal cusp tip. The stress distribution and displacement were solved using ANSYS finite element program(Swanson Analysis System). (omitted)

  • This study investigated the effects of cantilever length, location and load condition on stress distribution developed in the implants, prostheses and supporting tissues. The osseointegrated prostheses with two 10mm Branemark implants at 2nd premolar and 1st molar sites with cantilever extensions at 1st premolar, 2nd and 3rd molar sites were constructed. Under 100N, 200N of vertical and $45^{\circ}$ oblique loads at the cantilever pontics, stress distribution patterns and displacement were analyzed with three dimensional finite element method. The results were as follows : 1. The stress was concentrated at the joint of the cantilever pontic and implant superstructure, the neck of implant and the ridge crest near the cantilever But there was little load transfer to the lower supporting tissues of implants. 2. The implant near the cantilever was displaced inferiorly while the implant far from the cantilever was displaced superiorly. In horizontal direction the implants were displaced to the direction where the loads were applied, except the apexes of the implants. 3. In case of anterior cantilever, the stress and displacement were higher than the prosthesis connected with natural tooth. 4. The stress developed in the posterior cantilevered type was higher than in the anterior cantilevered type. The greastest stress was concentrated at the ridge crest near the posterior cantilever. 5. The longer the cantilever, the more the stress was developed and was concentrated at the joint of the cantilever pontic and implant superstructure. 6. Under oblique load, the stress was concentrated at the necks of implants and the ridge crests, but decreased at the joint of the cantilever pontic and implant superstructure than under vertical load.

  • The precise estimation of the reliability and life of the Ravigneaux planetary gear train used in an automatic transmission is necessary in order to enable accurate material and geometric properties to reliability distrobution and the number of load cycles at failure. These are critical for the proba- bilistic design of complex planetary gear system as Ravigneaux type particularly during various gear ratios. The Ravigneaux planetary gear train has five gears, such as a forward and a reverse sun gear, a short and a long pinion, and an annulus gear. In this paper, the Ravigneaux gear system is analyzed to figure out the reliablity distribution. i.e. the probability of survival in the system without its overhaul. First, the reliablity method based on the Weibull distribution is used in conjuction with the Palmgren's model to predict both the individual reliabilities of its components and the nimber of load cycles when the system failed. Then using the presented method, the life of the Ravigneaux gear system can be determined. Alwo the different design parameters such as tooth face width, material property, and Weibull exponent are applied and reached to optimal ones. Thus, the precise evaluation of the reliability and life of the Ravigneaux planetary gear train used in an automatic transmission can be effectively carried out.

  • This study investigated the influence of composite resins with different elastic moduli and occlusal loading conditions on the stress distribution of restored notch-shaped non-carious cervical lesions (NCCL) using 3D finite element analysis. Two different materials, Tetric Flow and Z100, were used as representative flowable hybrid resins for the restoration of NCCL. A static point load of 500 N was applied at the buccal and palatal cusps. The ratios of stress reduction to energy dissipation were better in the compressive state than the tensile state regardless of the restorative material. The total dissipation ratios for Tetric Flow were 1.5% and 4.2% larger than those for Z100 under compression and tension, respectively. Therefore, tensile stress poses more of a risk for tooth fracture, and Tetric Flow is a more appropriate material for restoration.
