  • This paper describes a tool-clamping/unclamping mechanism for application of a micro-spindle. The mechanism is based on one-way shape memory effect and interference-fit. The corresponding mathematical models and a few considerable design parameters are mentioned in this paper. Especially, necessary conditions for the clamping and unclamping operation are investigated through finite element analysis. The analysis results show that the differences between the diametral deformations of the tool holder in high temperature and that in low temperature are increased according to amounts of the interference. Thus the less interference between the tool-holder and the ring, the less tolerance to allow the clamping and unclamping operation because the inner diameter of the tool holder in high temperature should be smaller than the diameter of the tool shank, and that in low temperature should be larger than the diameter of the tool shank. In addition, the design for maximization of clamping force are investigated based on finite element analysis. The results show that the more amounts of the interference, the more clamping force. As the result, the interference should be considered as a important factor to maximize the tool clamping force.

  • At present, industries and researchers are looking for ways to reduce the use of lubricants because of ecological and economical reasons. Therefore, metal cutting is to move toward dry cutting or semi-dry cutting. One of the technologies is known as MQL machining. This paper presents an investigation into MQL machining with the objective of evaluating cylindricity and cooling effect for the turning process of SM45C. To reach this goal, cylindrical-outer-diameter turning experiments are carried out according to cutting conditions with fluid, MQL and dry machining methods. A cutting force, tool-shank temperature and cylindricity of workpiece are measured and analyzed. The correlation between cutting conditions and cylindricity are evaluated according to cooling lubricant environments.

  • This study demonstrates the diffusion bonding process between a tungsten carbide shank (K30) and tungsten carbide (DX5) for micro WC-PCD tool fabrication. A type of nickel alloy was used as the filler met alto improve the bond ability between K30 and DX5. The bonding pressure, time, and surrounding conditions were kept constant. In particular, the normal pressure was controlled precisely under buckling analysis. Diffusion bonding was performed at various operation temperatures (1170-1770 K) by using a specially designed jig. The microstructure on the localized bonded surface was analyzed using scanning electron microscopy and optical microscopy. In the case of diffusion bonding of WCat 1370-1770K, the filler metal melted completely and diffused between the two base metals, and they were bonded more tightly on both sides than at temperatures below 1370 K. Our results demonstrated the importance of sensitive temperature dependence of diffusion bonding.

  • Brazing between cemented carbides and steel for tool investigated by copper alloy brazing filler. Copper alloy filler was high liquidus temperature($990^{\circ}C$), therefor the shank(steel) occurred softening. Because brazing sample was necessary to heat treatment after brazing process. This experiment, influence of austenite time and purge temperature on heat treatment were investigated. As a result, these treatments obtained to high deflective strength In case of austenite time was short and purge temperature was low. Especially, nitride precipitated brazing layers was strongly influenced by the deflective strength.
