This paper presents a machining error compensation methodology due to deflection of micro cutting tools in side cutting processes. Generally in order to compensate for tool deflection errors it is necessary to carry out a series of simulations, cutting force prediction, tool deflection estimation and compensation method. These can induce numerous calculations and expensive costs. This study proposes an improved approach which can compensate for machining errors without simulation processes concerning prediction of cutting force and tool deflection. Based on SEM images of test cutting specimens, polynomial relationships between machining errors and corrected tool positions were induced. Taking into account changes of cutting conditions caused by tool position variation, an iterative algorithm was applied in order to determine corrected tool position. Experimental works were carried out to validate the proposed approach. Comparing machining errors of nominal cutting with those of compensated cutting, overall machining errors could be remarkably reduced.

This paper shown how to measure the machining error in diameter of cylindrical workpiece and compensate the measured machining error in NC turning. Machining error is measured by the electric micrometer mounted on the tool post with the NC part program for probe location path analyzed. Correct NC part program for finish turning is automatically generated to compensate the measured machining error. These concepts have been effectively introduced to a newly developed software for error compensation. In turning experiments with the developed error compensation system, machining error was almost within the specified tolerance, which reveals the effectiveness of the developed system.

Micro end-milling has been becoming an important machining process to manufacture a number of small products such as micro-devices, bio-chips, micro-patterns and so on. Despite the importance of micro end-milling, many related researches have given grand efforts to micro end-milling phenomenon, for example, micro end-milling mechanism, cutting force modeling and machinability. This paper strongly concerned actual problem, micro tool deflection, which causes excessive machining errors on the workpiece. To solve this problem, machining error prediction method was proposed through a series of test micro cutting and analysis of their SEM images. An iterative algorithm was applied in order to obtain corrected tool path which allows reducing machining errors in spite of tool deflection. Experiments are carried out to validate the proposed approaches. In result, remarkable error reduction could be obtained.

A study on machining electrode for LED (Light Emitted Diode) mold with shaped end-mill is presented. The electrode machining by shaped end-mill has been used for maximizing the productivity in manufacturing semiconductor mold. However, it has not been researched systematically for many difficulties such as the making of shaped end-mill, generation of tool path due to distinctive tool geometry, and so on. Tool path is generated on geometry of the shaped end-mill and cutting force to provide accurate and efficient machining of electrode. The verification program can drive enhancement of productivity, selecting cutting conditions from experiment function of cutting force. Also, compensation of tooling and maching error can make the electrode accurately by modifying tool path. Therefore, the research on machining with shaped end-mill can contribute to enhancement of accuracy and productivity in building semiconductor mold.

This paper proposes a methodology using a tool based on the branch-parameter continuation power flow (BCPF) in order to restore the power flow solvability in unsolvable contingencies. A specified contingency from a set of transmission line contingencies is modeled, considering the transient analysis and practice in the Korean power system. This tool traces a solution path that satisfies the power flow equations with respect to the variation of the branch parameter. At a critical point, in which the branch parameter can move on to a maximum value, a sensitivity analysis with a normal vector is performed to identify the most effective compensation. With the sensitivity information, the location of the reactive power compensation is determined and the effectiveness of the sensitivity information is verified to restore the solvability. In the simulation, the proposed framework is then applied to the Korean power system.

The machining accuracy of CNC machine tools will decrease the production lead time because the coordinate compensation of the tool path will be unnecessary to meet design specifications. Improving the accuracy of machined parts enhances the reliability and functionality of the assembly as well as the life of the product. Among various factors affecting the accuracy of machined parts, the ambient temperature is the major factor that refers to the temperature surrounding the machine and workpiece. In this study, an experiment was conducted to confirm the dimensional variations caused by changes in the ambient temperature. The ambient temperature resulted in overcutting when it increased. A developed pre-processor converts the CNC program to compensate the dimensional variations caused by temperature changes. This methodology can be used to determine the machining accuracy and improve the positioning accuracy of a machine tool.

Geometrical error of ultra-precision machining due to spherical tool alignment error is analyzed. Deviation of spherical edge, ranged several ten micrometers, generates vertical and horizontal error of tool path and affects profile accuracy of machined surface. Simulation of machined error shows effect of tool alignment error and enables to estimate alignment error. This work provides technical insights into the minimizing of geometrical error of ultra-precision machining.

For geometric accuracy in the net shape machining, the problem of tool deflection should be resolved in some fashion. In particular, this is crucial in finish cut operation where slim tools are used. The purpose of this paper is to verify the validity and effectiveness of the prediction model of the machined surface. Experimental results are presented for the cut of steel material with HSS endmill of diameter 6mm on machining center. The results shows that 1) the machining error due totool deflection is serious even in the low cutting load, 2) by using the mechanistic simulation model with experimental coefficients, the machining error was predicted with maximum prediction error of 10% which was significantly reduced to the desired level by the path modification method.

The objective of this study is to estimate and to compensate for the volumetric error of a machine tool. In this paper, the volumetric error is defined and error synthesis model is presented. Then, the volumetric error of workpiece is compared through the virtual machining and a new tool-path is generated to compensate for the error in the post-processor of CAM system using the error synthesis model. By this method, the error is compensated without modification or replacement of a machine tool being in use.
