Using the geometric and the vector methods, three dimensional surface texture and roughness models in flat end milling are developed. In these models, rear cutting effect on surface generation is considered along with tool run-out and tool setting error including tool tilting and eccentricity between tool center and spindle rotational center. Rear cutting is the secondary cutting of the already machined surface by the trailing cutting edge. The effects of tool geometry and tool deflection on surface roughness are also considered. For representing the surface texture more practically, three dimentional surface topography parameters such as RMS deviaiton, skewness and kurtosis are introduced and used in expressing the surface texture characteristics. Under various cutting conditions, it is confirmed that the developed models predict the real surface profile precisely. These models could contribute to the cutter design and cutting condition selection for the reduction of machining and manual finishing time.

Tool path generation is a part of process planning in 3D printing. This is done before actual printing by a computer rather than an AM machine. The mesh geometry of the 3D model is sliced layer-by-layer along the Z-axis and tool paths are generated from the sliced layers. Each 2-dimensional layer can have two types of printing paths: (i) shell and (ii) infill. Shell paths are made of offset loops. During shell generation, twists can be produced in offset loops which will cause twisted tool paths. As a twisted tool path cannot be printed, it is necessary to remove these twists during process planning. In this research, An algorithm is presented to remove twists from the offset loops. To do so the path segments are traversed to identify twisted points. Outer offset loops are represented in the counter-clockwise segment order and clockwise rotation for the inner offset loop to decide which twisted loop should be removed. After testing practical 3D models, the proposed algorithm is verified to use in tool path generation for 3D printing.

A CAD/CAM system has been developed for rapid prototyping (RP) of microfluidic devices based on excimer laser micromachining. The system comprises of two complementary softwares. One, the CAM tool, creates part programs from CAD models. The other, the Simulator Tool, uses a part program to generate the laser tool path and the 2D and 3D graphical representation of the machined microstructure. The CAM tool's algorithms use the 3D geometry of a microstructure, defined as an STL file exported from a CAD system, and process parameters (laser fluence, pulse repetition frequency, number of shots per area, wall angle), to automatically generate Numerical Control (NC) part programs for the machine controller. The performance of the system has been verified and demonstrated by machining a particle transportation device. The CAM tool simplifies part programming and replaces the tedious trial-and-error approach to creating programs. The simulator tool accepts manual or computer generated part programs, and displays the tool path and the machined structure. This enables error checking and editing of the program before machining, and development of programs for complex microstructures. Combined, the tools provide a user-friendly CAD/CAM system environment for rapid prototyping of microfluidic devices.

It is well known that the five-axis machining has advantages of tool accessibility and machined surface quality when compared with conventional three-axis machining. Traditional researches on the five-axis tool-path generation have addressed interferences such as cutter gouging, collision, machine kinematics and optimization of a CL(cutter location) or a cutter position. In the paper it is presented that optimal CL data for a face-milling cutter moving on a tool-path are obtained by incorporating TSS(tool swept surface) model. The TSS model from current CL position to the next CL position is constructed based on machine kinematics as well as cutter geometry, with which the deviation from the design surface can be computed. Then the next CC(cutter-contact) point should be adjusted such that the deviation conforms to given machining tolerance value. The proposed algorithm was implemented and applied to a marine propeller machining, which proved effective from a quantitative point of view. In addition, the algorithm using the TSS can also be applied to avoid cutter convex interferences in general three-axis NC machining.

This study is predicted tool deformation by cutting forces and chip-tool interface temperature in machining process. Modeling of tool is made using 3D CAD software, finite element method is performed by cutting forces and temperature. Cutting forces and temperature used load conditions are predicted using the cutting force model based on machining theory. Experimental milling tests have been conducted to verify the cutting force model. Finally, this study is predicted cutting force components and temperature using cutting conditions, material property, tool geometry without experiment and tool deformation is predicted by cutting forces and temperature in machining process.
This paper discusses the deformation characteristics of a scaled-down automotive outer door panel with vacuum-assisted incremental sheet forming. The vacuum condition between the die and Al6052-H32 sheet with a thickness of 1.0 mm is reviewed with the goal of improving the geometrical accuracy of the target product. The material flow according to the forming tool path, including the multi-tool path and conventional contour tool path, is investigated considering the degradation of the pillow effect. To reduce friction between the tool and the sheet during incremental forming, automotive engine oil (5W-30) is used as a lubricant, and the strain field on the surface of the formed product is analyzed using ARGUS. By comparing the geometry and material flow characteristics of products under different test conditions, it is confirmed that the product surface quality can be significantly improved when the vacuum condition is employed in conjunction with a multi-tool path strategy.
This study is concerned with the surface quality of products according to the material and coating condition of the forming tool in incremental sheet forming. Three forming tools, SKD11 with and without diamond-like-coating (DLC) and polymer tool tip, were used to form conical and pyramidal geometries to take into account the influence of friction between the forming tool and the sheet on the surface quality including geometric accuracy of deformed samples. Each test was performed using SUS304 with a thickness of 0.4 mm according to different incremental depths per lap of 0.5 mm, 1.0 mm, and 1.5 mm for the contour tool path, considering the increase in normal force which is associated with the frictional behavior during local deformation. The surface quality was then investigated through surface roughness measured with KEYENCE VR-6000 and relative strain distribution including deformed shape analyzed with ARGUS which is a non-contact optical strain measurement system. Differences between 3D CAD surfaces and captured geometry from experiments were evaluated to compare the effect of friction on geometric accuracy. From comparisons of experimental results, it was revealed that the polymer-based tool tip can improve surface quality and geometric accuracy by reducing the undesired material flow due to local friction in the increment sheet forming process.

Recently the use of high-speed equipment in machine-tool industry has greatly increased, which requires the development of prognostics and prediction methods on the design stage. Conversion of the test/experiments stage from real to virtual reality will not only significantly reduce the design and manufacturing cost, but will also increase design quality. This paper shows how it is possible to develop the automated system for the design calculations of the air-bearing spindles. First, the general calculation method is introduced. It contains several steps, namely, geometry identification, pressure calculation, stiffiness calculation, dynamics characteristics calculation. For geometry identification reducing spindle shaft to rings was proposed, which helps to automate the calculation process. For pressure calculation the Peshti method was implemented. For stiffiness calculation the analysis was made, which shown the necessity of correct calculation step selection. Then the system of ordinary differential equations containing influence coefficients was evolved, which is used for trjectories calculation. The graphical representation of the calculation results shows the dynamic behavior of the spindle unit concerning various working conditions. Finally, this automated system is illustrated by an example of the air-bearing spindle calculation.
The present study aims to estimate the wind ventilation performance for pedestrian level domains from the air quality point of view. Three typical models of a dense urban area were considered and numerically simulated in order to examine the effects of the geometry of such models on wind flow characteristics, which in turn affect the air quality, within the pedestrian domain of a street canyon located within this area. The calculated flow fields were employed to estimate the exceedance probabilities within the study domain using a new approach: air exchange rate within the domain. The study has been applied to nine cities in Japan: Tokyo, Osaka, Sapporo, Niigata, Fukuoka, Nagoya, Sendai, Yokohama, and Kyoto, based on their mean wind velocity data. The results demonstrated that the exceedance probability analysis of the pedestrian wind environment could be a valuable tool during the design stage of inhabited areas for the evaluation of pollutant-removal efficiency by the applied wind. Also, the calculated probabilities demonstrated substantial dependence on both the geometry of building arrays and the wind conditions of the nine cities.

The deflection of an end mill is very important in machining process and cutting simulation because it affects directly workpiece accuracy, cutting force, and chattering. In this study, the deflection of the end mill was studied both experimentally and by using finite element analysis. And the moment of inertia of cross sections of the helical end mill is calculated for the determination of the relation between geometry of radial cross section and rigidity of the tools. Using the Bernoulli-Euler beam theory and the concept of equivalent diameter, a deflection model is established, which includes most influences from tool geomety parameters. It was found that helix angle attenuates the rigidity of the end mill by the finite element analysis. As a result, the equivalent diameter is determined by tooth number, inscribed diameter ratio, cross sectional geometry and helix angle. Because the relation betweem equivalent diameter and each factor is nonlinear, neural network is used to decide the equivalent diameter. Input patterns and desired outputs for the neural network are obtained by FEM analysis in several case of end milling operations.
