  • Generally, the - life of die is limited by fatigue fracture or dimensional inaccuracy originated from wear. In this paper, to predict the fatigue life of the dissimilar materials die, the stress and stxain histories of die can be predicted by the analysis of elasto-plastic finite element neth hod and the elastic analysis of die during the process analysis of workpiece. Using heat shrink fit analysis, initial stress of the k r t die is computed. Also, the stress-life curve of die material can be obtained through experiment. With the above two facts, we propose the analysis method of predicting fatigue life in die. In the proposed model, tlz analysis of elastic-plastic finite element method for material is carried out by using ABAQUS. Surface force resulted from the contacting border of the die and workpiece is tmnsformed into the nodal force of die to implement elastic analysis. Besides, the proposed analysis model of die is applied to the one material and the dissimilar materials extrusion die.

  • This study was carried out fusion-welded butt joints in SWS 490A high strength steel subjected to tensile test that load-deflection curve. The windowed or short-time Fourier transform (WFT or SIFT) makes possible for the analysis of non-stationary or transient signals into a joint time-frequency domain and the wavelet transform (WT) is used to decompose the acoustic emission (AE) signal into various discrete series of sequences over different frequency bands. In this paper, for acoustic emission signal analysis to use a continuous wavelet transform, in which the Gabor wavelet base on a Gaussian window function is applied to the time-frequency domain. A wavelet transform is demonstrated and the plots are very powerful in the recognition of the acoustic emission features. As a result, the technique of acoustic emission is ideally suited to study variables which control time and stress dependent fracture or damage process in metallic materials.

  • This research is tendencious to manufacture solid piston-rod of shock absorber as hollow piston-rod using friction welding. The SM45C has been welded to the SM45C-pipe in order to investigate the effect of upset pressure on friction weldability. The friction time and upset pressure was variable conditions under the conditions of spindle revolution of 2,000rpm, friction pressure of 55MPa, and upset time of 2.0seconds. Under these conditions, the microstructure of weld interface, tensile fracture surface and mechanical tests were studied of friction weld, and so the results were as follows. When the upset pressure is sufficient, gets the high tensile strength. The optimal welding conditions were n=2,000rpm, $P_1$=55MPa, $P_2$=95MPa, $t_1$=1.5sec, $t_2$=2.0sec when the total upset length is 4.5mm.

  • In this study, machining characteristics of AIN-hBN composites were evaluated in end-milling process. As a first step, AIN-hBN composite specimens with various hBN contents were prepared using hot press method. Material properties of the composites, such as relative density, Young's modulus and fracture toughness, were measured and compared. Then, a series of end-milling experinients were performed under various cutting conditions by changing cutting speed, depth-of-cut and feed rate. Cutting force variations were measured using a tool dynamometer during the cutting experiments. Machined surfaces of the specimens were observed using SEM and a surface pro filer to investigate the surface integrity changes. The cutting force decreased with an increases of hBN content. The cutting process was almost impossible for monolithic AIN, owing to severe chipping. In contrast, at high content of hBN, surface damage and chipping decreased, and better surface roughness can be obtained.

  • Groundwater flow in fractured rocks generates many challenging problems to scientist and engineers in the projects related to oil and geothermal reservoirs, subsurface contaminations and underground openings. To circumvent these problems, the numerical simulation of groundwater system is used as an established tool in these days. Discrete modelling approach emphasizes geometric parameters, aperture and transport properties of fracture. On the other hand, continuum modelling approach uses the parameters formulated in a way of average hydraulic property. In recent years, the results of field observations from underground opening indicate that groundwater in rock mass flows in a channel form. The channel flow is postulated as the result of the combined effects of geometric pattern and aperture variation.

  • Currently, x-ray is mostly used for the diagnosis of dental cavity and osteoporosis. The osteoporosis is broadly defined as a decrease in the amount of bone mass per unit volume of the bone. Clinically the manifestation of low bone mass presents a clinical problem to the general population as an increase in fracture risk and especially in aging population[1]. Although the amount of the irradiated x-ray to the human body for the clinical diagnosis is relatively small, the exposition of the x-ray to the human body should be minimized as much as possible, since the x-ray is an ionizing radiation. To investigate other possible systems replacing X-ray, ultrasonic imaging and MRI(Magneto-Resonance-Imaging) systems were studied. Unfortunately, an effective and safe diagnosis tool for detecting the dental cavity and the osteoporosis is currently lacking. (omitted)

  • Biochemical markers of bone turnover has received increasing attention over the past few years, because of the need for sensitive and specific tool in the clinical investigation of osteoporosis. Bone markers should be unique to bone, reflect changes of bone loss, and should be correlated with radiocalcium kinetics, histomorphometry, or changes in bone mass. The markers also should be useful in monitoring treatment efficacy. Although no bone marker has been established to meet all these criteria, currently osteocalcin and pyridinium crosslinks are the most efficient markers to assess the level of bone turnover in the menopausal and senile osteoporosis. Recently, N-terminal telopeptide (NTX), C-terminal telopeptide (CTX) and bone specific alkaline phosphatase are considered as new valid markers of bone turnover. Recent data suggest that CTX and free deoxypyridinoline could predict the subsequent risk of hiP fracture of elderly women. Treatment of postmenopausal women with estrogen, calcitonin and bisphosphonates demonstrated rapid decrease of the levels of bone markers that correlated with the long-term increase of bone mass. Factors such as circadian rhythms, diet, age, sex, bone mass and renal function affect the results of biochemical markers and should be appropriately adjusted whenever possible. Each biochemical markers of bone turnover may have its own specific advantages and limitations. Recent advances in research will provide more sensitive and specific assays.

  • It is well known that during tensile testing, a part of the mechanical work done on the specimen is transformed into heat energy. However, the ultimate temperature rise and the rate of temperature rise is related to the nature of the material, conditions of the test and also to the deformation behaviour of the material during loading. The recent advances in infrared sensors and image/data processing techniques enable observation and quantitative analysis of the heat energy dissipated during such tensile tests. In this study, infrared imaging technique has been used to characterise the tensile deformation in AISI type 316 nuclear grade stainless steel. Apart from identifying the different stages during tensile deformation, the technique provided an accurate full-field temperature image by which the point and time of strain localization could be identified. The technique makes it possible to visualise the region of deformation and failure and also predict the exact region of fracture in advance. The effect of thermal gradients on plastic flow in the case of interrupted straining revealed that the interruption of strain and restraining at a lower strain rate not only delays the growth of the temperature gradient, but the temperature rise per unit strain decreases. The technique is a potential NDE tool that can be used for on-line detection of thermal gradients developed during extrusion and metal forming process which can be used for ensuring uniform distribution of plastic strain.

  • Characterization of discontinuous media is an endeavor that poses great challenge to engineers in practice. Since the inherent defects in cracked domains can substantially influence material resistance and govern its behavior, a lot of work is dedicated to efficiently model such effects. In order to overcome difficulties of material instability problems, one needs to comprehensively represent the geometry of cracks along with their impact on the mechanical properties of the intact material. In the present study, stress-strain results from laboratory experiments on Inada granite was used to derive crack tensor as a tool for the evaluation of fractured domain stability. It was found that the formulations proposed earlier could satisfactorily be employed to attain crack tensor via the invariants of which judgment on cracks population and induced anisotropy is possible. The earlier criteria based on crack tensor analyses were reviewed and compared to the results of the current study. It is concluded that the geometrical parameters calculated using mechanical properties could confidently be used to judge the anisotropy as well as strength of the cracked domain.

  • Cross-borehole electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) is an effective groundwater detection tool in geophysical investigations. In this paper, an artificial water injection test was conducted on a small clay sample, where the high-resolution cross-borehole ERT was used to investigate the moisture migration law over time. The moisture migration path can be two-dimensionally imaged based on the relationship between resistivity and saturation. The hydraulic conductivity was estimated, and the magnitude ranged from 10-11 m/s to 10-9 m/s according to the comparison between the simulation flow and the saturation distribution inferred from ERT. The results indicate that cross-borehole ERT could help determine the resistivity distribution of small size clay samples. Finally, the cross-borehole ERT technique has been applied to investigate the self-sealing characteristics of clay.
