Tongue acupuncture is not only a body acupuncture treatment for the tongue but also a new microacupuncture treatment. Tongue acupuncture is a very promising treatment from a diagnostic and therapeutic point of view. According to several studies, Guan's tongue acupuncture and tri-tongue acupuncture are frequently used. Tongue acupuncture can be used for dysphagia, dysarthria, aphasia, insomnia, autism spectrum disorder, burning mouth syndrome, and cerebral palsy.

Objectives : The aim of this study was to show the rationale of point-selection on acupuncture and moxibustion in the Mouth & Tongue Section (in the Oehyeong Chapter) of the Donguibogam. Methods : First, We summarized the causes of each disease in the Mouth & Tongue Section (in the Oehyeong Chapter) of the Donguibogam. Then, We explained the rationale of acupuncture point-selection referring to the cause of disease, physiology of the Oriental medicine, other uses of each acupuncture points in the Donguibogam, character of each acupuncture points, flow of meridian pathways and specific acupuncture points etc. Results and Conclusions : Total 20 acupuncture points were used in the Mouth & Tongue Section (in the Oehyeong Chapter) of the Donguibogam. Most of acupuncture points were specific acupuncture points. But, some rationale of acupuncture point-selection were explained by the cause of disease, physiology of the Oriental medicine, other uses of each acupuncture points in the Donguibogam, flow of meridian pathways etc.

Oral leukoplakia is the most common premalignant lesion of the oral mucosa. This case report presents the effect of acupuncture on Oral leukoplakia. The 67 years old male patient who has suffered for 2 years was treated with Right side Saam acupucture Damjeonggyeok(BL66, GB43, LI1, GB44) without other treatment. Acupuncture was performed for 15 minutes. The effect of acupuncture was evaluated as photographic change and visual analog scale(VAS) of subjective symptoms in oral cavity. After 87th acupunture treatment during 226 days, Leukoplakias were decreased at the right side of ventral tongue and the left border of the tongue and the lower lip. Furthermore, ulcer, erosion at the left border of the tongue were disappeared and VAS of Burning pain in the tongue decreased from 8 to 2. Although acupuncture is unusual treatment for Oral Leukoplakia, this case report suggested the effectiveness of using Damjeonggyeok on Oral Leukoplakia according to Saam acupuncture method.

Based on recent 27 document, reported in Huang Ti Nei Ching, the following results concering the tongue and Tongue-acupuncture were obtained: 1. It was observed that the tongue has direct or indirect connection with the Heart meridian, the Liver meridian, the Spleen meridian, the Kidney meridian, the Triple energizer meridian and the Stomach meridian. 2. The Tongue-acupunccture, needlingon tongue, is one of new acupunctures treating general disorder and 31 acu-points have been found; 17 points on the upper part and 14 points on the lower part of the tongue. 3. The Tongue-acupuncture is employed by dividing the tongue into threeregions; Sangcho area(下焦穴), Jungcho area(中焦穴) and Hacho area(下焦穴). Each region cures its own corresponding symptoms. 4. The upper part of the tongue is divided into 4 regions by the sidelines along with Chuy Cheon(聚泉), So Jang Hyul(小腸穴) and Dae Jang Hyul(大腸穴). Sangcho area(上焦穴) includes Sim Hyul(心穴), Pye Hyul(肺穴), Sang Gi Hyul(上肢穴) and Jungcho area(中焦穴) includes Ui Hyul(胃穴), Bi Hyul(脾穴), Dam Hyul(膽穴) and Hacho area(下焦穴) includes Gan Hyul(肝穴), Bang Kwang Hyul(膀胱), Sin Hyul(腎穴) and the inner region includes Yim Hyul(陰穴), Ha Gi Hyul(下肢穴), on The lower part of the tongue, there are aec Hyul(額穴), Mok Hyul(目穴), Bi Hyul(鼻穴), I Hyul(耳穴), In Hu Hyul(咽喉穴) in contrast with the face above the center of the tongue as well as Gi Maek Hyul(支脈穴), Hae Chun Hyul(海泉), Gyum Gin Ok Aek(金津玉液), Seol Ha Hyul(舌下穴), Seol Gu(舌柱), Joa Chun Hyul(佐泉穴), Sin Gyun Hyul(神根穴), Jung Gu(中矩), Aek Bang Hyul(液旁穴). 5. The Tongue-acupuncture can be applied to the disease internal medicine, surgery, ophthalmology, otorhinolaryngology, gynecology, musculoskeletal system, symptomatology.

Hypoglossal nerve palsy is an uncommon neurologic disorder. We report a 67-year-old Korean male with tongue paralysis due to hypoglossal nerve palsy. He had complaints associated only with tongue paralysis and was treated with herbal medicine and electric acupuncture for 12 days. We evaluated his tongue paralysis severity by a numeric rating scale (NRS) and the angle of tongue deviation. After 12 days of treatment, the NRS score showed improvement of his complaints, and the angle of tongue deviation was decreased. Korean medicine could therefore be an effective treatment choice for hypoglossal nerve palsy.

Objectives The purpose of this study is to investigate recent clinical studies on effect of acupuncture for Autism Spectrum Disorder in other countries. We have analyzed the studies on effect of acupuncture for Autism Spectrum Disorder within randomized controlled trail (RCT) for 6years (from 2010 to 2015). Methods The search database includes Medline, Embase, Cochrane library and CNKI (China National Knowledge Infrastructure). To narrow the search, the following key search terms were used: 'autism or ASD or Asperger's Syndrome or pervasive developmental disorder, acupuncture'. The search was limited to the publication date from 2010 to 2015. 7 control studies in Medlin, Embase, Cochrane library and 5 control studies in CNKI were selected for analysis. Results and Conclusions 1. The acupuncture and rehabiliation treatment is more effective than only acupuncture treatment. Especially, Retention of needling is helpful. 2. It is necessary to set up standard scale in assessment of ASD patients and serum arginine-vasopressin (AVP) can be substitution. 3. Head acupuncture and tongue acupuncture is effective for ASD.

Objectives : To introduce a rare case of a patient with Progressive Bulbar Palsy (PBP) and suggest the possibility of treatment using electroacupuncture and Korean Medicine. Methods : A 61-year-old man with PBP, complaining of dysarthria, was treated with electroacupuncture and Korean Medicine, from June 16 to July 10, 2015. Improvements in symptoms were measured using the speech mechanism screening test (SMST), measurement of tongue and orbicularis oris motility, and speech handicap index (SHI). Results : The scores of SMST, motility of tongue and orbicularis oris showed a tendency for gradual improvement with 25 days of Korean Medicine Treatment after admission, but conversation was still impossible. In SHI scores, one point increased in the speech domain and one point decreased in the psycho-social domain, and three points increased in the other domain. Conclusion : Electroacupuncture and Korean Medicine Treatment improved dysarthria caused by PBP, but not completely. Korean Medicine Treatment seems effective in the management of accompanying symptoms such as black hairy tongue, dry mouth, and general condition. The symptoms of PBP are similar to those of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and there is controversy regarding the classification of PBP. The most important aspect of treating a patient with PBP is an early diagnosis and devising appropriate rehabilitation strategies.

In this paper, we have developed a tongue diagnosis system using fuzzy rules. A healthy person's tongue is red in color and has less tongue coating. However, when a person suffers from a disease, the color of their tongue changes from red to white, blue, or black. Therefore, it can analyze patient's health if analyze color and coated tongue of tongue. Medical diagnosis system can automatically determines the symptoms of the disease of a patient and their and calculate the optimal acupuncture time on the basis of the patient's physical conditions, illness conditions, and age from any place and at any time. The computer simulation results have shown that electro-acupuncture administered by using the medical diagnosis system developed in this study is more effective than the conventional method.

In this paper, we present electronic acupuncture needles we have developed using intelligence technology based on Bluetooth in order to allow anyone to simply receive customized remote diagnosis and treatment by clicking on the menu of the smartphone regardless of time and place. In order to determine the health condition and disease of patients, we have developed a software and a hardware of electronic acupuncture needles, operating on Bluetooth which transmits biometric data to oriental medical doctors using the functions of automatically determining pulse diagnosis, tongue diagnosis, and oxygen saturation; the functions are most commonly used in herbal treatment. In addition, using fuzzy logic and reasoning based on smartphones, we present in this paper an algorithm and the results of completion of hardware implementation for electronic acupuncture needles, appropriate for the body conditions of patients; the algorithm and the hardware implementation are for a treatment time duration by electronic acupuncture needles, an automatic determinations of pulse diagnosis, tongue diagnosis, and oxygen saturation, a function implementation for automatic display of acupuncture point, and a strength adjustment of electronic acupuncture needles. As a result of our simulation, we have shown that the treatment of patients, performed using an Electronic Acupuncture Needles based on intelligence, is more efficient compared to the treatment that was performed before.

Black hairy tongue is a benign medical condition, which is characterized by elongated filiform lingual papillae, with a typical carpet-like appearance on the dorsum of the tongue. We describe the case of a 70-year-old Korean female with black hairy tongue, who complained of black hairy tongue accompanied by xerostomia. The patient was treated with Jibaekjihwang-tang-gagambang and electric acupuncture for 13 days. Black hairy tongue was evaluated by its visual appearance and by calculating hue-saturation-brightness (HSB) and red-green-blue (RGB) values of images of the tongue using a photo-edit program. Salivary flow rate (SFR) was evaluated to evaluate oral dryness. After 13 days of treatment, the black fur disappeared, and the brightness and RGB values of the black fur increased. In addition, the SFR increased. We conclude that Korean medicine could be the treatment choice for black hairy tongue.
