To understand the relative contribution of varietal and environmental variation on various grain quality components in rice, grain appearance, milling recovery, several physicochemical properties of rice grain and texture or palatability of cooked rice for milled rice materials of seven cultivars(five japonica & two Tongil-type), produced at six locations of the middle and southern plain area of Korea in 1989, were evaluated and analyzed the obtained data. Highly significant varietal variations were detected in all grain quality components of the rice materials and marked locational variations with about 14-54% portion of total variation were recognized in grain appearance, milling recovery, alkali digestibility, protein content, K /Mg ratio, gelatinization temperature, breakdown and setback viscosities. Variations of variety x location interaction were especially large in overall palatability score of cooked rice and consistency or set- back viscosities of amylograph. Tongil-type cultivars showed poor marketing quality, lower milling recovery, slightly lower alkali digestibility and amylose content, a little higher protein content and K /Mg ratio, relatively higher peak, breakdown and consistency viscosities, significantly lower setback viscosity, and more undesirable palatability of cooked rice compared with japonica rices. The japonica rice varieties possessing good palatability of cooked rice were slightly low in protein content and a little high in K /Mg ratio and stickiness /hardness ratio of cooked rice. Rice 1000-kernel weight was significantly heavier in rice materials produced in Iri lowland compared with other locations. Milling recovery from rough to brown rice and ripening quality were lowest in Milyang late-planted rice while highest in Iri lowland and Gyehwa reclaimed-land rice. Amylose content of milled rice was about 1% lower in Gyehwa rice compared with other locations. Protein content of polished rice was about 1% lower in rice materials of middle plain area than those of southern plain regions. K/Mg ratio of milled rice was lowest in Iri rice while highest in Milyang rice. Alkali digestibility was highest in Milyang rice while lowest in Honam plain rice, but the temperature of gelatinization initiation of rice flour in amylograph was lowest in Suwon and Iri rices while highest in Milyang rice. Breakdown viscosity was lowest in Milyang rice and next lower in Ichon lowland rice while highest in Gyehwa and Iri rices, and setback viscosity was the contrary tendency. The stickiness/hardness ratio of cooked rice was slightly lower in southern-plain rices than in middle-plain ones, and the palatability of cooked rice was best in Namyang reclaimed-land rice and next better with the order of Suwon$\geq$Iri$\geq$Ichon$\geq$Gyehwa$\geq$Milyang rices. The rice materials can be classified genotypically into two ecotypes of japonica and Tongil-type rice groups, and environmentally into three regions of Milyang, middle and Honam lowland by the distribution on the plane of 1st and 2nd principal components contracted from eleven grain quality properties closely associated with palatability of cooked rice by principal component analysis.
Ten isolates of Xanthomonas oryzae were inoculated to three rice varieties; 'Milyang 23' in Kinmaze group, 'Yushin' in Kogyoku group and 'Tongil' in Rantai-emas group, at the seedling stage, early-tillering stage, Maximum-tillering stage and flag-leaf stage. Much fluctuation was existed in virulence pattern of isolates at each growth stage. Especially, the isolates of pathotype II showed much more variation in virulence. This suggests that there would be more sub-divided pathotypes involved in pathotype II. Isolate G 7716 of pathotype II showed its virulence to 'Yushin' variety only after booting stage. On the result of the analysis of variance for the reaction of three rice varieties to three isolates at each growth stage; the isolates, varieties, growth stages were the main factors of variations of virulence, and the interaction of isolates with varieties was significant but other interactions were not.
In order to test cold tolerance of rice plants 16 varieties were treated at day/night temperature of 10/5$^{\circ}C$ at the 2nd, 4th, and 6th leaf stages. Indica$\times$japonica varieties were more sensitive to low temperature than a japonica variety. Among indica$\times$japonica varieties, "Tongil", "Suweon #251", and "Suweon #277" were less sensitive to low temperature compared to other indica$\times$japonica varieties tested. The 4th leaf stage was more sensitive to low temperature than 2nd and 6th leaf stages. than 2nd and 6th leaf stages.

Demand for low-input sustainable crop cultivation is increasing to meet the need for environment-friendly agriculture. Consequently, developing genotypes with high nutrient use efficiency is one of the major objectives of crop breeding programs. This study was conducted to identify QTLs for traits associated with physiological nitrogen use efficiency (PNUE). A recombinant inbred population (DT-RILs) between Dasanbyeo (a tongil type rice, derived from an indica ${\times}$ japonica cross and similar to indica in its genetic make-up) and TR22183 (a Chinese japonica variety) consisting of 166 $F_8$ lines was developed and used for mapping. A frame map of 1,409 cM containing 113 SSR and 103 STS markers with an average interval of 6.5 cM between adjacent marker loci was constructed using the DT-RILs. The RILs were cultivated in ordinary-N ($N-P_2O_5-K_2O=100-80-80kg/ha$) and low-N ($N-P_2O_5-K_2O=50-80-80kg/ha$) (100 kg/ha) conditions. PNUE was positively correlated with the harvest index and grain yield in both conditions. Twenty single QTLs (S-QTLs) and 58 pairs of epistatic loci (E-QTLs) were identified for the nitrogen concentration of grain, nitrogen concentration of straw, nitrogen content of shoot, harvest index, grain yield, straw yield and PNUE in both conditions. The phenotypic variance explained by these S-QTLs and E-QTLs ranged from 11.1 to 44.3% and from 16.0% to 63.6%, respectively. The total phenotypic variance explained by all the QTLs for each trait ranged from 35.8% to 71.3%, showing that the expression of PNUE and related characters depends signify- cantly upon genetic factors. Both S-QTLs and E-QTLs may be useful for marker-assisted selection (MAS) to develop higher PNUE genotypes.
This study was carried out to obtain basic information on variety selection for the utilization of whole crop rices(WCR) at National Institute of Crop Science, RDA, in 2004. Fifteen varieties and elite line were evaluated on feed value such as dry matter yield(DMY), crude protein( CP), acid detergent fiber(ADF), neutral detergent fiber(NDF) and total digestible nutrients(TDN). The dry matter yields were ranged from 13.23 to 17.83 ton per ha, the highest yielding varieties were Sobibyeo(l6.98ton / ha) in Japonica type, SR22060 (17.83 ton / ha) in New plant type, Hangangchalbyeo(I7.66 ton / ha) in Tongil type. Suweon 468 showed the highest value in the RFV and TDN content among the varieties, and Suweon 468, Suweon 498, Suweon 490 and SR22058 were chosen to have the high feed values through cluster analysis. The dry weight(grain) was found to be positively related with percent of the ripened grain, 1,000 grain weight and CPo TDN content was found to be positively related with CP, but negatively related with NDF and ADF. RFV was found to be negatively related with plant height, NDF and ADF. The promising rice varieties for WCR were Suweon 468, Suweon 498, Suweon 490 and SR22058 on the basis of CP, TDN and DMY.

Recently, strong interest in the well-being and healthy food trends lead a spreading of rice processing products such as rice noodles, rice breads, and rice cakes. However, most of rice varieties developed in Korea showed very limited processing properties in processing of noodles compare to that of wheat flour. Moreover, low competitiveness as a raw processing materials due to high price give poor evaluations for rice noodles processing. To cope those barriers, 'Saemimyeon' a Tongil type high yielding variety with a high amylose contents was developed in RDA. 'Saemimyeon' showed about 10~32 % of increase in yield as 7.08MT/ha and 26.7% of high amylose contents together with easy grinding property of 65.7% of high chalkiness ratio. The both of milled as well as brown rice of 'Saemimyeon' were well fit for processing properties in rice pasta where the contents of rice flour for rice pasta was 99% (1% of Tapioka starch was intermixed in to the rice flour). A spaghetti type for wet noodles and macaroni type for dry noodles were developed, respectively. Each of pasta were showed relatively more or less an equal quality and panel test compare to that of durum wheat pasta products. Finally, rice pasta products could suggest an alternative idea for a new rice processing items where rice noodles market was stagnant.
The elongation of mesocotyl and coleoptile plays important roles in the seedling emergence and stand establishment of dry direct-seeded rice. Experiments were carried out to elucidate the effects of seed-presoaking treatments of GA$_3$ and some inorganic salts on the mesocotyl, and coleoptile elongation of rice. Seed-soaked GA$_3$ promoted the elongation of mesocotyl, but little effect on the coleoptile elongation. The stimulation effects of GA$_3$ were found to be enhanced by addition of CaCl$_2$ However, the sole treatment of CaCl$_2$ showed no stimulating effect on the mesocotyl and coleoptile elongation. Mesocotyl elongation was most prominent in the combined treatments of 50ppm GA$_3$ with 100 mM CaCl$_2$. The synergistic effects of GA$_3$ and CaCl$_2$ on mesocotyl elongation varied with varietal groups. The stimulating effects of GA$_3$ were enhanced significantly by the addition of CaCl$_2$ in japonica varieties, Dongjinbyeo, Ilpumbyeo and Milyang 95, and tall indica variety, Labelle, but not in semidwarf Tongil type varieties, Tongilbyeo, Milyang 23, and Nampungbyeo, and semi-dwarf indica, Short Labelle. The promoting effects of GA$_3$ on the mesocotyl elongation were decreased in proportion to the lowered osmotic potential by PEG 6000 on the contrary to CaCl$_2$ This implies that the synergistic effects of CaCl$_2$ with GA$_3$ on mesocotyl elongation was not caused by osmotic potential lowered by CaCl$_2$ addition but by the salt itself. Salts such as Ca(NO$_3$)$_2$, MgCl$_2$ BaCl$_2$, NaCl, KCl and KNO$_3$ showed the synergistic effects with GA$_3$ on mesocotyl elongation as well. The degree of synergistic effects showed no differences among salts tested, implying that there is no specificity of ions constituting the salts.
Top-dressing pot experiment with $^{15}N$ urea was carried out by using three varieties. Two-split application was much better for Tongil line than 4-split. Fertilization efficiency (Fe), use efficiency (Eu) and absorbed fertilizer nitrogen efficiency (Ef) were much greater in 2-split than in 4-split. The order of Fe followed that of Ef. Grain yield and $^{15}N$ excess % among plant parts suggest that Tonsil line uptakes fertilizer nitrogen much in early stage and retranslocated well later. The order of soil nitrogen increment in plant per fertilizer nitrogen in plant $({\Delta}Ns/Nf)$ might be an index of soil nitrogen use efficiency due to fertilizer.
In order to obtain a standard reference for designing an adequate power rice transplanter, the cutting forces depending upon variety of seedling, sowing density, seedling age and soil moisture content of mat-type seedling were measured by the rice transplanter installed with force measuring device of dynamic strain gage system in the laboratory. The result of this study are summarized as follows : 1. Cutting velocity and acceleration transplanting hoe obtained from jinematic analysis of planting mechanism was 1.32m/sec and 81.5m/$sec^2$ when planting crank-shaft rpm was 160. 2. Little difference between cutting forces on 30-days old seelings of japonica and Indica type was observed, as the cutting forces determined were 2.0kg per hill for Japonica type and 2.1kg per hill for Indica type. 3. Cutting forces determined on 40-days old seedlings were 2.5kg, 2.3kg, 3.1kg and 2.9kg per hill for Milyang No.15, Tongil, Akibare and Milyang No.23 compared to the other varieties. 4. The cutting force was not greatly affected by the sowing densities , only five percent of differences were observed epending upon the sowing densities. 5. Cutting forces were 2.7kg and 2.0kg per hill on 40-days old seedlings and 30-days old seedlings respectively. About 38 percent of more forces was required in cutting 40-days old seedling than in cutting 30-days old seedlings. 6. More cutting forces were required as soil moisture content of mat-type seedling was decreased. 7. Root length after cutting by the planting hoe and their relationships with soil moisture content on 30-days old seedlings, are as follows ; $y=4.147-11.384x+ 28.854x^2$ where , $y$=root length after cutting. (cm) , $x$=soil ture content of mat type seedlings.(%, d.b.) 8. Cutting forces were varied with the width of cuttings ; those on 40-days old mat type seedlings were 2.7kg and 2.2kg per hill when cutting with 14 mm and 10mm of width respectively, about 32 percent of more forces was required when cuting with 14mm of width compared to 10mm of width.
This experiment was conducted to investigate the endosperm characteristics of an opaque rice which was derived from an Indica cultivar Pokhareli Mashino. Grain apperance of opaque rice looked similar to the waxy grain, while the blue-color response to the iodine solution was similar to non-waxy endosperm. The shape of starch granules was alike each other, but their size were different each other with the smallest of the opaque rice. Their cristaline structure of starch granules were A type. The content of total protein and most of the amino-acids of opaque rice was about 1.5 times of other varieties. Alkali digestibility of the opaque rice was very low. Total water uptake and hydration rate of opaque rice was similar to non-waxy variety Tongil. Amylogram characteristics such as viscosity, setback and consistency of opaque rice revealed medium value between. waxy and non-waxy rice.
