This study introduces a method to eliminate formaldehyde and benzene, toluene from indoor air by means of a photocatalytic oxidation reaction. In the method introduced, for the good performance of the reaction, the effect and interactions of the $TiO_2$ catalyst and ultraviolet in photocatalytic degradation on the reaction area, dosages of catalysts, humidity and light should be precisely examined and controled. Experiments has been carried out under various intensities of UV light and initial concentrations of formaldehyde, benzene and toluene to investigate the removal efficiency of the pollutants. Reactors in the experiments consist of an annular type Pyrex glass flow reactor and an 11W germicidal lamp. Results of the experiments showed reduction of formaldehyde, benzene and toluene in ultraviolet $/TiO_2/$ activated carbon processes (photooxidation-photocatalytic oxidation-adsorption processes), from 98% to 90%, from 98% to 93% and from 99% to 97% respectively. Form the results we can get a conclusion that a ultraviolet/Tio2/activated carbon system used in the method introduced is a powerful one for th treatment of formaldehyde, benzene and toluene of indoor spaces.
The objective of this study was to depict the kinetic behavior of the platinum catalyst for the deep oxidation of VOCs and their mixture. The oxidation characteristics of VOCs, which were benzene, toluene, and styrene, was studies on a 0.5% $Pt/{\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ catalyst. The reactivity increases in order benzene>toluene>styrene. In mixtures, remarkable effects on reaction rate and selectivity have been evident ; the strongest inhibiting effect was shown by styrene and increases in a reverse order with respect to that of reactivity. The reaction model reveals that there is a competition between the two reactants for the oxidized catalyst. Thus, the nontoxic catalytic oxidation process was suggested as the new VOCs control technology.

Adsorption and desorption of toluene from bare and $TiO_2$-coated silica with a mean pore size of 15 nm was studied using breakthrough curves and temperature programmed desorption. Thicknesses of $TiO_2$ films prepared by atomic layer deposition on silica were < 2 nm, and ~ 5 nm, respectively. For toluene adsorption, both dry and humid conditions were used. $TiO_2$-thin film significantly improved toluene adsorption capacity of silica under dry condition, whereas desorption of toluene from the surface as a consequence of displacement by water vapor was more pronounced for $TiO_2$-coated samples with respect to the result of bare ones. In the TPD experiments, silica with a thinner $TiO_2$ film (thickness < 2 nm) showed the highest reactivity for toluene oxidation to $CO_2$ in the absence and presence of water. We show that the toluene adsorption and oxidation reactivity of silica can be controlled by varying thickness of $TiO_2$ thin films.
Removal of methane, benzene and toluene was evaluated in a lab-scale biocover packed with a soil mixture of forest soil and earthworm cast (75:25 weight ratio). The bacterial community in the biocover was characterized using quantitative real-time PCR and terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism. Methane was removed at the upper layer of the biocover (-0.1 ~ -0.4 m), where the oxygen concentration was remarkably lower. The average removal efficiencies for methane and benzene/toluene were 90% and 99%, respectively. The pmoA gene copy numbers, responsible for methane oxidation, in the upper layer were higher than those in the lower layer. While type I methanotrohs dominated the lower layer, type II methanotrophs, such as Methylocystis and Methylosinus, were noted to be predominant in the upper layer. Benzene and toluene were removed from the lower layer (-0.6 ~ -0.9 m) as well as the upper layer. Moreover, the tmoA gene copy number, responsible for benzene/toluene oxidation, seen in the upper layer was not significantly different from those seen in the lower layer. These results suggest that a biocover packed with a soil and earthworm cast mixture is a promising method which could be utilized for the control of methane and volatile organic compounds such as benzene and toluene.

Photocatalyzed degradation of trace level trichloroethylene(TCE) and toluene in air was carried out over near UV illuminated titanium doxide(anatase) pellet in a flow reactor. The authors investigaed the effects of humidity and trace contaminant levels on the oxidation rates of toluene. Inlet concentrations of TCE and toluene were 10∼100ppm. TCE photooxidation was very rapid under what conditions, and almost 100% conversion was achieved for TCE(up to 70 ppm) as a single air contaminant. An important finding was that competitive adsorption between humidity and trace contaminants has a significant effect on the oxidation rate of what.

This research was aimed at developing new catalytic membrane reactors to be used for : i) partial oxidation of toluene (to benzaldehyde and benzoic acid) ii) oxidative dehydrogenation of propane iii) complete oxidation of propane and toluene. The reactor is particularly useful for the optimisation and the industrial development of heterogeneous catalytic processes, particularly for those processes where it is necessary to control the reactants stoichiometry in the reaction zone. This control limits consecutive reactions, thus obtaining high selectivity with industrially interesting conversions. This presentation will concentrate on the partial oxidation of toluene.
Activity of manganese oxide supported on ${\nu}-Al_2O_3$ was increased when cerium was added. Also, cerium-added manganese oxide on ${\nu}-Al_2O_3$ was more effective in oxidation of toluene than that without cerium. XRD result, it was observed that $MnO_2+CeO_2$ crystalline phases were present in the samples. For the used catalyst, a prominent feature has increased by XPS. TPR/TPO profiles of cerium-added manganese oxide on ${\nu}-Al_2O_3$ changed significantly increased at a lower temperature. The activity of $18.2 wt{\%}\;Mn+ 10.0 wt{\%}\;Ce/{\nu}-Al_2O_3$ increased at a lower temperature. The cerium added on the manganese catalysts has effects on the oxidation of toluene.

Generally, $TiO_2$ powders absorb ultraviolet rays and make oxidation/reduction reactions on its surface. Hydroxide radical(OH), a product of photocatalyst reactions, has so strong oxidation/reduction electric potential that it can oxidize noxious gas like VOCs(Volatile Organic Compounds) and NOx. In this study, $TiO_2$ was substituted for exposed concrete to investigate the purifying degree of VOCs(Benzene, Toluene) and NOx. Anatase types of $TiO_2$ were used as photocatalyst. The sun rays and the ultraviolet were used as a light source. Anatase type $TiO_2$ was better than rutile type in purifying performance. The sunray showed the best purifying performance among the light sources. $3\%$ substitution of $TiO_2$ with the sunray was enough to purify VOCs(Benzene, Toluene) and NOx efficiently.

The catalytic oxidation of toluene in low concentration was investigated over manganese oxide/$\gamma$-A1$_{2}$O$_{3}$ catalysts. As increased manganese loading, the conversion of toluene increased at a lower temperature. The 18.2wt$\%$ Mn/$\gamma$-Al$_{2}$O$_{3}$ appeared to be the most active catalyst. XRD results indicated that most of the catalysts exist as MnO$_{2}$ and Mn$_{2}$O$_{3}$ crystalline phase. After the reaction, the used and the fresh catalysts were characterized by XPS. For the used catalyst, a prominent feature has increased. TPR profiles of 18.2 wt$\%$ Mn/$\gamma$-Al$_{2}$O$_{3}$ changed significantly as the manganese loading increased at a lower temperature.
In this study, we investigated the UV/H2O2 process to treat organic compound-spilled water. In consideration of usage and properties, benzene, toluene, phenol, and methyl ethyl ketone were selected as representative organic compounds. The selected material was first removed by natural volatilization and aeration that simulated the pretreatment of the prcoess. After that, UV/H2O2 oxidation experiments were conducted under various H2O2 concentration conditions. Benzene and toluene were mostly volatilized before reaching the oxidation process due to high volatility. Considering the volatility, oxidation experiments were performed at an initial concentration of 5 mg/L for benzene and toluene. The UV/H2O2 oxidation process achieved 100% of benzene and toluene removal after 20 minutes under all hydrogen peroxide concentration conditions. The phenol was rarely removed from the volatile experiments and oxidation tests were performed at an initial concentration of 50 mg/L. The process showed 100 % phenol removal after 30 minutes under 0.12 v/v% of hydrogen peroxide concentration condition. Methyl ethyl ketone was removed 58 % after 2 hours of volatile experiments. The process showed 99.7% Methyl ethyl ketone removal after 40 minutes under 0.08 v/v% of hydrogen peroxide concentration condition. It was confirmed that the UV/H2O2 process showed high decomposition efficiency for the four selected organic compounds, and identified the amount of hydrogen peroxide in classified organic contaminants.
