  • In Korea, tollgates are designed in a complex manner with the coexistence of Hi-Pass and Toll Collection System lanes, frequently leading to traffic accidents. Despite the continuous efforts of the government to improve tollgates based on an analysis of accident factors, incidents still persist. Tollgates require drivers to be aware of numerous circumstances and events within a short distance, necessitating careful consideration of several factors and circumstances when analyzing traffic accidents. Therefore, this study applied the Term Frequency-Inverse Document Frequency method to traffic accident data to identify the factors and circumstances. Subsequently, the tollgate traffic accidents were categorized. Finally, effective tollgate improvement measures were proposed based on the categorization result.

  • Positive effects such as significantly reducing traffic accidents caused by human error can be expected by the introduction of Automated vehicles (AV). However, as new traffic safety issues are expected to occur in the future due to errors in H/W or S/W of autonomous vehicles and lack of its function, it is necessary to establish a scenario to evaluate the driving safety of AV. Therefore, in this study, functional scenario was developed to evaluate the driving safety of AV based on traffic accident data of the National Police Agency. Using the GIS program, QGIS, traffic accident data that occurred in the toll gate and ramp sections of expressway were extracted and accident summary items were checked to classify the types of accident. In addition, based on the results of accident type classification, functional scenario were developed that contains various dangerous situations in the tollgate and ramp sections.

  • Although Hi-pass have been operated for alleviating traffic congestion and enhancing mobility in expressways since 2000, there is not any standard for safe operation. For that reason, we investigated about tubular markers, which is a typical facility for safety in Hi-pass. Tubular Markers are installed for separating same or opposite traffic flows spatially, supporting the marks at a place which has not only high possibility of accidents but distinguished carefulness of drivers. In this paper, it is noted two considerings; one is prevention of accident from the speed gap of autos and Hi-pass vehicles; the other is guarantee of necessary distance that Hi-pass vehicles could be changes the lanes for off-ramp. Focusing those considerations, it is proposed not only prefer distance of tubular markers, but also fundamental basic subjects. We anticipate that the results of this study would be useful reference in more safe and efficient tollgate operation of Hi-pass.
