  • In a ceramic green body, some degree of nonuniformity in density always presents. These differences in green density will appear as nonuniform shrinkage after sintering takes place. For the complex ceramic bodies with various curves and angles, therefore, it is quite difficult to foresee the final dimensions precisely after sintering. This simulation study shows that, considering the sintering process as a thermal shrinkage phenomenon, the use of NASTRAN enables to predict the precise shape of a sintered body. Based on this result, 'the reverse engineering technique' has been developed that can unfold the exact dimensions of a green body to have the desired shape after sintering. This approach will provide a simple and useful tool for ceramic engineers to fabricate complicate bodies with tight dimensional tolerances.

  • To investigate the epilithic diatom community and water quality of the Osan stream, water samples were collected from the eight stations from April to September 2003. Sampling was two times before and after heavy rain. Total 52 diatom were identified and divided into 12 saproxenosus taxa, 6 saprophilous taxa and 34 indifferent taxa, respectively. The DAIpo values higher after heavy rain than before that. According to tolerance degree to the organic water pollution, all sampling stations ranged from $\alpha$-oligosaprobic to $\alpha$-mesosaprobic. Thus, the result indicates that the water quality of Osan stream is gradually improved by heavy rain.

  • At the early stages of engineering design, a number of design concepts may be suggested. With a great degree of freedom, making a good choice may be a challenge at this stage. In this study, a simplified evaluation criterion for design concepts is presented based on cost, simplicity and safety. Cost is estimated by the amount of materials and the required level of tolerance. Simplicity is represented by the number of parts, assembly steps, and fasteners. Safety is assessed by the level of potential failure. The proposed criterion is applied to an example design of driving mechanisms for cervical vertebrae massage machine.

  • Three strains of Clostridium thermocellum, JH01, JH20 and JH30 which are capable of producing ethanol directly from cellulose were isolated from composts. The morphological, cultural and physiological properties of the strains were similar to the ATCC type strain, except for carbon source utilization and degree of ethanol tolerance. All of the three isolates could use glucose and maltose as a sole carbon source and two of them, strains of JH01 and JH20 were three times more tolerant to ethanol than the ATCC type strain. Cellulases secreted by the isolated strains had higher activities than those of the ATCC type strain.

  • In this paper, we introduced a fault tolerant control system with the aim of achieving higher degree of reliability for a PLC control system in the field network. The system reliability was evaluated by MTBF(Mean Time Between Failure). The design of the fault tolerant system through CC-Link of Mitsubisi's MELSEC network was presented. In addition, the PLC data is transmitted from the field network's PC to the host PC by TCP/IP Window socket.

  • Ball rolling blending is a popular technique for blending between parametric surfaces. The ball rolling blend surface is conceptually a trajectory of a ball rolling between two base sufaces. It is constructed by sweeping a circular arc along a ball contact curve pair. Since a ball rolling blend surfaces does not have a polynomial form like a Bezier surface patch, it is impossible to apply this method directly to a commercial CAD/CAM system. In this paper an algorithm is developed to approximate a ball rolling blend surface into Bezier surface patches. Least square method is applied to obtain proper Bezier surface patches under a given tolerance. The Bezier surface patches have degree three or more and guarantee VC1-continuity.

  • With the development of multimedia and optical technologies, application systems with facial features hare been increased the interests of researchers, recently. The previous research efforts in face processing mainly use the frontal images in order to recognize human face visually and to extract the facial expression. However, applications, such as image database systems which support queries based on the facial direction and image arrangement systems which place facial images automatically on digital albums, deal with the directional characteristics of a face. In this paper, we propose a method to detect facial directions by using facial features. In the proposed method, the facial trapezoid is defined by detecting points for eyes and a lower lip. Then, the facial direction formula, which calculates the right and left facial direction, is defined by the statistical data about the ratio of the right and left area in facial trapezoids. The proposed method can give an accurate estimate of horizontal rotation of a face within an error tolerance of $\pm1.31$ degree and takes an average execution time of 3.16 sec.

  • This paper introduced a procedure for improving the quality of group decision making in various task types. Emphasis is placed on the construction of the optimal GDSS(Group Decision Support System) design with identifying the group decision characteristics of decision stages on the various task types. Especially, the identification of outliers and the establishment of confidence limits in group decision making were stressed. Participants in group decision making whose 'opinions fall outside the group's tolerance level are further studied to annex the source of this variation. The result showed that a preparation stage in the generating idea-type task and a illumination stage in the negotiating-type task were critical. Furthermore, the degree of the disagreement was severe in the verification and the preparation stages on group decision making. This paper developed a general procedure for improving the quality of group decision making. The procedure presented helps in identifying those stakeholders whose opinions may significantly deviate from that of the group.

  • This article involves architecting prototype-fuzzy expert system for designing the nominal cover thickness by means of fuzzy inference for quantitatively representing the environment affecting factor to reinforced concrete in chloride-induced corrosion environment. In this work, nominal cover thickness to reinforcement in concrete was determined by the sum of minimum cover thickness and tolerance to that defined from skill level, constructability and the significance of member. Several variables defining the quality of concrete and environment affecting factor (EAF) including relative humidity, temperature, cyclic wet and dry, and the distance from coast were treated as fuzzy variables. To qualify EAF the environment conditions of cycle degree of wet-dry, relative humidity, distance from coast and temperature were used as input variables. To determine the nominal cover thickness a qualified EAF, concrete grade, and watercement ratio were used. The membership functions of each fuzzy variable were generated from the engineering knowledge and intuition based on some references as well as some international codes of practice.
