  • Any significant inflow of fresh water due to flood or snow melting can rapidly reduce salinity at the bay. In such a case, the habitat environment in the sea near river mouth can be partly destroyed. Therefore, research to understand the salinity distribution quantitatively at the bay for the utilization of natural environment and for the inhabitant conservation must be very important. In this study, the investigation on the relationship between satellite image and turbidity is carried out first, and then the salinity distribution at the bay using the relationship between turbidity and salinity is derived. The main results are as follows. First the reappearance ability of RGB bands respectively of the satellite image is investigated, and then it was confirmed that the combination of band2 and band3 expressed best the movement characteristics of turbid water at the bay is chopped up into 4 small areas. Second the turbidity of river mouth is estimated using the travel time from the upward monitoring station to the river mouth. Finally the satellite image is converted into the salinity distribution by the correlation of salinity and turbidity. It is confirmed that the salinity distributions obtained from above three investigation methods are quite reasonable and clear.

  • Optical properties of sea water were studied in the entrance of Tokyo Bay, Japan, based on the data obtained from six oceanographic stations in April, 1985. The observation of surface irradiance and underwater irradiance of sea water for eight kind of wavelengths (378, 422, 481, 513, 570, 621, 653, 677 nm) of sun light was conducted using the underwater irradiameter (Isigawa # SR-8). The mean attenuation coefficient of the sea water was appeared to be 0.300 (0.034-0.774) and the attenuation coefficient of the sea water for wavelength appeared such as 0.230 for 378 nm, 0.258 for 422 nm, 0.266 for 481 nm, 0.213 for 513 nm, 0.195 for 570 nm, 0.378 for 621 nm, 0.402 for 653 nm, 0.498 for 677 nm. The transparency was 7.2 m (6-9.5 m) and water color was 9 (6.5-10.5) in the study area and the sun's altitude 52.56$^{\circ}$(31.68-66.76$^{\circ}$). The relationship between attenuation coefficient (K) and transparency (D) was K=2.61/D (1.76/D-4.13/D). The rates of light penetration for eight kind of wavelengths (378, 422, 481, 513, 570, 621, 653, 677 nm) were computed with reference to the surface light intensity respectively. The mean rates of light penetration in proportion to depths were 69.30% (57.33-77.40%) in 1 m layer. 17.66% (6.3-27.90%) in 5 m layer, 4.47% (0.60-9.17%) in 10 m layer, and 0.77% (0.02-1.97%) in 20 m layer. The rates of light penetration at the transparency layer with reference to the surface light intensity was shown as 9.91% (0.51-22.99%).

  • We investigated the population dynamics of Aurelia aurita in Sihwa Lake from April to October in 2009. Salinity ranged from 5.9 to 30.7 psu at the surface. Abundance of mesozooplankton ranged from 3 to 111,874 indiv. $m^{-3}$. Ephyrae occurred from April to May with the peak in abundance occurring on 17 April. Maximum density of ephyrae was observed near the power transmission towers that are known to be habitats of polyps. Mortality of ephyrae was lower than in other areas because of the abundant prey concentration and the absence of predators. Young medusae occurred from April to July with the peak in abundance occurring on 8 May. Adult medusae occurred from May to July with the peak in abundance on 25 June and they disappeared before the rainy season. Planula occurred only in May and June with the peak in abundance on 25 June. Growth rates of Aurelia aurita ranged from -0.06 to 0.34 $d^{-1}$, and decreased rapidly after May. The period in which adult medusa occurred was restricted, compared with those in other area in Korea (e.g., Masan Bay) and Japan (e.g., Tokyo Bay). In the period of this study, the available food was limited in June and salinity decreased to ca. 20 psu in May because of the beginning of the wet season. We assumed that the exceptionally short period of occurrence of the medusa may be a response of adults to changes in temperature, salinity or food limitation which leads to the precocious maturation of young medusa and the release of planula and that the brief occurrence of medusa was caused by an abrupt decrease in activity after the release of planula.

  • Growth status of the Littleneck calm Ruditapes philippinarum (Adams et Reeve) in Komso Bay was investigated by 600 individuals from February 2003 to January 2004. Based on the monthly variation of marginal growth rate of the shellfish, it was suggested that ring formation occurres between January and March once a year and takes approximately 19 months (1.58 old ages) to form a complete ring. The relationship between the shell height(SH) and the total weight(TW) could be represented by the following equation $TW=2.8{\times}\;10^{-3}SH^{2.3648}$. And the relationship between the shell height(SH) and shell length(SL) as well as the shell width(SW) were represented by equations SL=1.0027SH+5.812 and SW=0.5121H+1.2849 respectively. Growth curves for shell height and total weight fitted to the Bertalanffy's equation were expressed as $SH_t=42.83(1-e^{-0.4595(t-0.59)})$ and $TW_t=20.17(1-e^{-0.4595(t-0.59)})^{2.3648.}$

  • This study was carried out with blue mussels at Otsuchi Bay in Japan from August 1981 to May 1982, in order to investigate the effect of the parasitic pea crab (Pinnotheres pholadis) on the reproductive capacity of host blue mussels (Mytilus edulis galloprovincialis). The results show that pea crabs delay gonad development of host mussels about one month and lower their fatness rate by intercepting nutrients. The parasitization with pea crabs is thought not to prevent spawning activity itself, but to reduce the number of germ cell resulting in the reduced space of gonads.

  • Purpose: Not enough attention has been paid to defecation habits in Japan. This study aimed to emphasize the importance of defecation habits on health and function in Japanese pupils. Methods: Using multiple regression analysis, 2,722 questionnaires obtained from pupils in grades 5 to 12 were analyzed to determine lifestyle habits associated with defecation frequency. Results: Significant regression formulae for defecation scores were obtained for all school types: elementary school (ES) (adjusted R2=0.08, p<0.001), junior high school (JHS) (0.09, p<0.001), and senior high school (SHS) (0.15, p<0.001). The following factors were associated with poorer defecation scores, according to school type: female gender (all 3 school types), breakfast skipping (elementary and JHSs), lower physical activity (JHSs and SHSs), and longer school-day screen time (elementary and SHSs). In addition, poorer self-reported academic performance scores in ES, less standardized body mass index (BMI) in JHS, and shorter non-school- day screen time scores in SHS, were associated with poorer defecation scores. Conclusion: Poor defecation frequency showed significant associations with various lifestyle habits, such as breakfast skipping, physical activity, and screen time, among pupils. Academic performance and standardized BMI were also associated with defecation frequency. More attention should be paid to defecation frequency to sustain health and function in pupils.

  • The underwater color environment was assessed by conducting color calculations based on underwater spectral irradiance measurements at various depths. Changes in the distribution of underwater spectral irradiance values between 1 and 3 m, exhibited similar trends in areas Stn. 1, 5, and 6. Likewise, changes between 5 and 20 m displayed comparable patterns in areas Stn. 1, 2, 4, and 6. Color values for each observed area fell between 0.14 and 0.26 (x-values) and 0.2 and 0.36 (y-values), with the y-values exhibiting a variation 1-3 times greater than the x-values. Color a* and b* values ranged from a maximum of -17 and -6 to a minimum of -63 and -30, respectively. By classifying fishing grounds based on observed variations, Stn. 1, 9, Stn. 2, 3, Stn. 7, 8 and Stn. 4, 5, 6 were grouped independently. Particularly, Stn. 5, 6, 7, and 8 were categorized into distinct groups that could be visually differentiated, especially when considering the significant changes in color a* as the water depth increased from 10 to 20 m. Tokyo Bay were classified into different color groups, and Wakayama Prefecture offshore was classified into the same color group as the surveyed fishing grounds.
