  • Construction case of PRD (Percussion Rotary Drill) pipe pile and matters to be attended in construction of PRD pile were reviewed. The compressive and uplifting static pile load tests for PRD piles were performed and, also, analysis by Pile Driving Analyzer was done. Based on these results, bearing components in each resisting part (that is: steel toe, external skin, and internal skin) were measured separately. The measured resisting force was compared to the value calculated by the estimated formula. The pile capacity was mobilized in steel toe area and the external skin friction and the internal friction were not produced. Thus, it could be considered that toe of PRD pile should be supported in hard bearing stratum (for example, the fresh soft rock).

  • Despite of the increasing number of the application of the drilled shaft pile in construction site, most of the study of pile capacity has been centered side shear resistance. But it is common that the drilled shaft is socketed on the rock so as to use the bearing resistance, so prediction of the toe's movement and characteristic of the bearing capacity is important as the side shear resistance. Therefore the model tests were performed in order to study the characteristic of bearing capacity on rock mass. The material of the test blocks were the mortar which was mixed with sand, cement and water, and test block size was $240{\times}240{\times}240mm$. Load was pressed by the 45mm of diameter of miniaturized pile and plate jack and steal plate were used to the confined stress for representing the underground condition. The relation of load-displacement was measured in many different conditions of rock mass such as direction of discontinuities, spacing and strength, and q-w curves of the toe of the pile were verified in each condition.

  • Static load tests were performed for open-ended piles, closed-ended piles, piles with grouted toe, and base-grouted piles by using calibration chamber. Then vertical bearing capacities determined from load tests were compared with each other. The stability of base-grouted pile during a simulated seaquake was investigated by changing the penetration depth. Also, static load tests and seaquake tests for 2-piles and 4-piles group were performed. The bearing capacity of the pile grouted inside the toe was 11.2~30.8% less than that of open-ended pile because of reduction of base resistance due to disturbance of base soil under pile toe. The bearing capacity of a base-grouted pile was 23.8~33.9% more than that of an open-ended pile and was similar to that of a closed-ended pile. The bearing capacity of base-grouted group pile was increased ; the bearing capacity of base-grouted 2-piles group increased 14.6~31.8% compared to that of open-ended 2-piles group, and that of base-grouted 4-piles group increased 15.3~22.4% compared to that of open-ended 4-piles group. During the simulated seaquake in deep sea, stability of base-grouted pile was found to be dependent on the pile penetration depth. During seaquake motion, single long base-grouted pile longer than 20m was stable and short base-grouted pile shorter than 12m failed. But relatively long base-grouted pile longer than 12m kept mobility state. Bearing capacity of base-grouted group pile with penetration depth less than 7m was degraded a little bit ; so, base-grouted group pile could maintain mobility condition.

  • For the bearing capacity evaluation, dynamic pile tests instead of static pile tests have been commonly used in embedded piles, which are known to have low noise and low vibration construction method. The objective of this study is to analyze the bearing capacity and penetration behaviors of embedded piles, which are constructed in different ground conditions, by using force and velocity signals obtained in the final blows during construction of embedded piles. For the dynamic pile analyses, the CAse Pile Wave Analysis Program (CAPWAP) and Wave Equation Analysis of Piles (WEAP) have been commonly used. In this study, the CAPWAP and WEAP are used for the analyses of the dynamic pile tests, which are conducted on embedded piles. The input values, output values, and force-velocity graphs of CAPWAP determined by analyzing the measured force-velocity signals are investigated. In addition, similar force-velocity singals are obtained from the WEAP by analyzing the input values of the WEAP. Considering the subsurface investigation results around the pile tips, if the N-value increases exponentially along the depth, toe quake value should be small, and therefore large bearing capacity is identified. On the contrary, if the N-value increases linearly, the bearing capacity is small because of large toe quake value. Furthermore, the stiffness of hammer cushion and pile cushion, which is difficult to find correct values, is recommended lower than 500 kN/mm. This study demonstrates that the results of WEAP may be similar to those of CAPWAP and the WEAP can be used to estimate the bearing capacity of embedded piles.

  • Preliminary pile load tests for the design of large diameter drilled shaft were performed on two of reduced scale(D=1370mm) test piles. The maximum loads of 2350 tonf in each direction were applied using bi-directional hydraulic jacks(Osterberg Cell) at toe. Neither of the test piles yielded in terms of skin friction and end bearing. Comparisons of the test results with several methods that estimate pile capacity show that the method of Horvath and Kenney(1979) for skin friction and Zhang and Einstein(1998) for end bearing were most appropriate for the site. The test results were directly applied to pile design in case RQD of skin and toe was larger than that of the test pile. It is desirable, therefore, to consider not only unconfined compression strength but also rock mass properties(i.e. TCR, RQD) for skin friction and end bearing evaluation in the future.

  • In this study, static end loading tests with load transfer measurement were accomplished for large diameter drilled shaft constructed in fault zone. Yield pile capacity (or ultimate pile capacity) from load-settlement curve was determined and axial load transfer behavior was measurd. The end bearing capacity was increased 2 times due to grouting the toe ground under pile base.

  • As CPT penetration tends to show a similar behavior to that of pile driving, a number of methods for estimating the toe bearing capacity of piles based on CPT data have been proposed. To evaluate the applicability of the methods in this country, a total of 172 dynamic load tests data on PHC piles and 82 CPT data at a site in the Nakdong River estuary were collected. A specific four-step procedure was adopted for the selection of the reliable data, and statistical techniques were then applied to the analysis of the applicability. The results indicated that among a total of 10 CPT-based methods applied, the best one is the Aoki method (1975), followed by the LCPC (1982), ICP (2005) methods and others.

  • The bentonite slurry has been used as the stabilize suspension for wet process bored pile construction in Thailand. The bentonite suspension has benefit on filtration in the sand layer, but it creates thick cake film along pile shaft and loose sedimentation at pile toe. The base grouting technique was widely used to rectify the soft base or loose sedimentation problem of bored pile. The base grouting technique was not increased only end bearing capacity, but was also more increase in skin friction capacity of the bored piles. The comprehensive researches on base grouting was carried out by installing PVC casing inside the shaft to allow the drilling through the pile base in order to collect the soil sample below the pile tip. The polymer based slurry recently was used to replace the bentonite slurry to overcome the thick cake film along pile shaft as well as loose sedimentation at pile toe. The extent research on polymer slurry by physical model was performed to verify the real behavior of polymer. The appropriate mixing ratio of polymer was proposed. The design skin friction coefficient, $\beta$ and end bearing coefficient, Nq, for sand layer base on fully instrumented tested pile were proposed. The application on remedial of the lose capacity bored pile with large displacement in Bangladesh was proposed and discussed.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the characteristics of bearing capacity of pre-bored super strength PHC (SSPHC) piles socketed in rocks based on dynamic load test results. Because the SSPHC piles have high compressive concrete strengths compared with those of regular high strength PHC piles, the allowable structural strengths of the SSPHC piles were increased. For optimal design of the super strength PHC piles, the geotechnical bearing capacity of the SSPHC piles should also increased to balance the increased allowable structural strength of the SSPHC piles. Current practices of pile installation apply the same amount of driving energy on both SSPHC and high strength PHC piles. As results of analyzing factors that influence bearing strength of SSPHC piles using dynamic load test, there was no relationship between SPT-N value at pile toe and end bearing capacity. But driving energy effects on end bearing capacity. In case of skin friction, driving energy had no effects. And reasonable method verifying design bearing strength is necessary because end bearing capacity is not considered sufficiently in restrike test results.

  • Despite of the increasing number of the application of drilled shaft piles in construction site, most studies on pile capacity have been focused on the side shear resistance. But it is common that the drilled shaft is socketed on the rock so as to use its bearing resistance. The prediction of the end movement and characteristics of the bearing capacity of the pile is great important as well. Therefore, a series of scaled model tests were carried out in order to study the characteristics of the bearing capacity on rock mass. The material of the test block was cement mortar which was mixed with sand, cement and water, and the size of a test block size was $240{\times}240{\times}240mm$. The axial load was applied by a miniaturized pile of 45mm in diameter and flat jacks and steel plate were used for confinement to simulate the real underground loading conditions. The relation of load-displacement was measured in various different conditions of rock mass such as strength, discontinuity of the rock mass and in-situ stress, so q-w curves of the end of the pile were presented for each condition.
