For a study on aluminium equivalent towards tissue equivalent material, authors made use of the Mix-DP as a tissue equivalent material. The aim of this study is to furnish the information on radiotherapy and x-ray diagnosis.
A tissue-equivalent phantom is necessary for quality control of hyperthermia therapy. However, since there is no phantom for this purpose, phantoms made from agar are being used in various studies. The tissue-equivalent properties of the agar phantom were confirmed by comparison with the tissue-equivalent material bolus in this study. CT images of the agar phantom and bolus were acquired, and tissue equivalent characteristics were analyzed with image analysis and dose calculation using a computerized radiation therapy planning system. The average pixel value was 96.960±10.999 in bolus, 108.559±8.233 in 3% agar phantom, and 111.844±8.651 in 4% agar phantom. Using the SSD technique, 100 cGy was prescribed at a depth of 1.5 cm and 6 MV X -ray was set to irradiated to 10x10 cm2, and the absorbed dose according to depth was calculated from the central axis of the beam. The intraclass correlation coefficient of dose distribution of bolus, 3% agar phantom, and 4% agar phantom was 0.979 (p<.001, 95%CI .957-.991). The density (g/cm3) at the point where the absorbed dose was calculated was 0.990±0.020 at the bolus, 1.018±0.020 at the 3% agar phantom, and 1.035±0.024 at the 4% agar phantom. In this study, the internal density distribution and uniformity of the agar phantom were confirmed to be appropriate as a tissue equivalent material by analysis of CT images and a computerized radiation therapy planning system.

In this paper we analyzed the mechanical behavior with respect to the thickness variation of elastic foundation(fatty tissue) in end-to-end anastomosis. This study considered the preliminary deformed shape induced by suturing in the anastomosis of coronary artery and PTFE with different diameters using simplified suturing model and the fatty tissue surrounding heart and coronary artery for more accurate result using finite element method. Area compliance(CA) was used to analyze the final deformed shape of the anastomotic part with respect to the thickness variation of fatty tissue under mean blood pressure, 100mmHg(13.3㎪). And Equivalent and circumferential stresses in the anastomosis were also analyzed with respect to the change of initial diameter ratio( $R_1$) and fatty tissue thickness( $T_{F}$). The results obtained were as follows : 1 When the elastic foundation, assumed to be incompressive material, surrounded the grafts in anastomosis, the compliance mismatch of artery and PTFE was reduced by 47 -72%. 2. As the initial diameter ratio( $R_1$) became larger, the higher difference of compliance was induced in spite of elastic foundation surrounding grafts. 3. The maximum nondimensional circumferential stress is twice or three times as high as the maximum nondimensional equivalent stress in the anastomotic part.t.

For effective patient treatment in proton therapy, it is therefore important to accurately measure the beam range. For measuring beam range, various researchers determine the beam range by measuring the prompt gammas generated during nuclear reactions of protons with materials. However, the accuracy of the beam range determination can be lowered in heterogeneous phantoms, because of the differences with respect to the prompt gamma production depending on the properties of the material. In this research, to improve the beam range determination in a heterogeneous phantom, we derived a formula to correct the prompt-gamma distribution using the ratio of the prompt gamma production, stopping power, and density obtained for each material. Then, the prompt-gamma distributions were acquired by a multi-slit prompt-gamma camera on various kinds of heterogeneous phantoms using a Geant4 Monte Carlo simulation, and the deduced formula was applied to the prompt-gamma distributions. For the case involving the phantom having bone-equivalent material in the soft tissue-equivalent material, it was confirmed that compared to the actual range, the determined ranges were relatively accurate both before and after correction. In the case of a phantom having the lung-equivalent material in the soft tissue-equivalent material, although the maximum error before correction was 18.7 mm, the difference was very large. However, when the correction method was applied, the accuracy was significantly improved by a maximum error of 4.1 mm. Moreover, for a phantom that was constructed based on CT data, after applying the calibration method, the beam range could be generally determined within an error of 2.5 mm. Simulation results confirmed the potential to determine the beam range with high accuracy in heterogeneous phantoms by applying the proposed correction method. In future, these methods will be verified by performing experiments using a therapeutic proton beam.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the biomechanical properties of fractured adjacent soft tissue during closed reduction after forearm fracture using the finite element method. To accomplish this, a finite element (FE) model of the forearm including soft tissue was constructed, and the material properties reported in previous studies were implemented. Based on this, nine finite element models with different fracture types and fracture positions, which are the main parameters, were subjected to finite element analysis under the same load and boundary conditions. The load condition simulated the traction of increasing the fracture site spacing from 0.4 mm to 1.6 mm at intervals of 0.4 mm at the distal end of the radioulnar bone. Through the finite element analysis, the fracture type, fracture location, and displacement were compared and analyzed for the fracture site spacing of the fractured portion and the maximum equivalent stress of the soft tissues adjacent to the fracture(interosseous membrane, muscle, fat, and skin). The results of this study are as follows. The effect of the major parameters on the fracture site spacing of the fractured part is negligible. Also, from the displacement of 1.2 mm, the maximum equivalent stress of the interosseous membrane and muscle adjacent to the fractured bone exceeds the ultimate tensile strength of the material. In addition, it was confirmed that the maximum equivalent stresses of soft tissues(fat, skin) were different in size but similar in trend. As a result, this study was able to numerically confirm the damage to the adjacent soft tissue due to the fracture site spacing during closed reduction of forearm fracture.

Because of the expectation of the non-invasive treatment effect, Various studies on the treatment of varicose veins using focused ultrasound are reported. In this study, the bio-tissue phantom and tissue equivalent phantom that can be applied to estimation of ultrasonic varicose veins treatment effect. Each phantom was evaluated for its usefulness by evaluating the acoustic characteristics and the shrinkage rate according to the ultrasonic irradiation. A multi-layer structure phantom with three layers of skin, fat, and muscle was constructed considering the structure of the tissue where the varicose veins occurred. The materials constituting each layer were made to have characteristics similar to human body. In addition, the multi-layered phantoms with blood vessel mimic tube, with bovine blood vessel, and with animal tissue were fabricated. The degree of shrinkage of blood vessel mimic material and vascular tissue according to ultrasonic irradiation was evaluated using B-mode image. As the results of this study, it was thought that the proposed phantom could be used effectively in the evaluation of ultrasonic varicose veins treatment. In addition, it is thought that these phantoms could be applied to the development of varicose vein treatment device using the focused ultrasound and the verification of the therapeutic effect.
Dose limits are not applied to medical radiation exposure therefore justification and optimization should be essential for protecting radiation. This study explores methods to reduce exposure dose undergoing general radiation exam by bolus(tissue equivalent material) with keeping image quality. Hand PA projection with 50 kVp, 5 mAs, SID 100 cm, and 8×10 inch is referred by covered bolus of thickness 0, 3, 5, 8, and 10 mm for evaluation entrance dose and SNR. The entrance dose (μGy) to the hand by bolus thickness was 125.41±0.288, 106.85±0.255, 104.97±0.221, 91.68±0.299, and 90.94±0.106 showing a significant reduction in radiation exposure depending on if the bolus was used and bolus thickness. The SNR of the image was 13.997, 13.906, 12.240, 12.538, and 12.548 at each bolus thickness, showing no significant difference. It was confirmed that if appropriate thickness and size of bolus is used depending on the type of radiological imaging exam and the body site, a significant radiation dose reduction effect can be achieved without deteriorating image quality.
In neutron shielding, the scattering effect is equally important as the attenuations in shielding materials. In the present study, the scattered dose equivalent was measured using a Rem counter for water, paraffin, borated paraffin, ordinary and heavy concrete, lead, iron, and tissue equivalent material in three different angles: 45$^{\circ}$, 90$^{\circ}$, and 135$^{\circ}$, respectively. The measurements were performed for the neutron, having the energies of 0.5, 1, 2, 5, and 18 MeV, which are produced from the Van do Graaff accelerator. The scattered dose equivalent ratios were increased with increasing the thickness of scattering materials and saturated at a certain thickness although they were different from one to other materials under study. The ratios were large for lead and iron while they were small for the hydrogen containing materials such as water and paraffin etc.
Aquaplast Thermoplastic (AT) is a tissue-equivalent oral compensator that has been developed to improve dose uniformity at the common boundary and around the treated area during radiotherapy in patients with head and neck cancer. In order to assess the usefulness of AT, the degree of improvement in dose distribution and physical properties were compared to those of oral compensators made using paraffin, alginate, and putty, which are materials conventionally used in dental imprinting. To assess the physical properties, strength evaluations (compression and drop evaluations) and natural deformation evaluations (volume change over time) were performed; a Gafchromic EBT2 film and a glass dosimeter inserted into a developed phantom for dose verification were used to measure the common boundary dose and the beam profile to assess the dose delivery. When the natural deformation of the oral compensators was assessed over a two-month period, alginate exhibited a maximum of 80% change in volume from moisture evaporation, while the remaining tissue-equivalent properties, including those of AT, showed a change in volume that was less than 3%. In a free-fall test at a height of 1.5 m (repeated 5 times as a strength evaluation), paraffin was easily damaged by the impact, but AT exhibited no damage from the fall. In compressive strength testing, AT was not destroyed even at 8 times the force needed for paraffin. In dose verification using a glass dosimeter, the results showed that in a single test, the tissue-equivalent (about 80 Hounsfield Units [HU]) AT delivered about 4.9% lower surface dose in terms of delivery of an output coefficient (monitor unit), which was 4% lower than putty and exhibited a value of about 1,000 HU or higher during a dose delivery of the same formulation. In addition, when the incident direction of the beam was used as a reference, the uniformity of the dose, as assessed from the beam profile at the boundary after passing through the oral compensators, was 11.41, 3.98, and 4.30 for air, AT, and putty, respectively. The AT oral compensator had a higher strength and lower probability of material transformation than the oral compensators conventionally used as a tissue-equivalent material, and a uniform dose distribution was successfully formed at the boundary and surrounding area including the mouth. It was also possible to deliver a uniformly formulated dose and reduce the skin dose delivery.
The purpose of this simulation study was to evaluate the possibility of pancreas detection through effective atomic number information using dual-energy computed tomography(CT). The effective atomic number of 10 tissue-equivalent materials were estimated through stoichiometric calibration. For stoichiometric calibration, HU values at low-energy (80 kV) and high-energy (140 kV) for 10 tissue-equivalent materials were used. Based on this method, the effective atomic number image of the tissue-equivalent material was extracted through an iterative algorithm. According to the results, the attenuation ratio in accordance with the effective atomic number was estimated to have an R2 value of 0.9999, and the effective atomic number of Pancreas, Water, Liver, Blood, Spongiosa, and Cortical bone was overall within 1% accuracy compared to the theoretical value. Conventional pancreatic cancer examination uses a contrast medium, so there is a possibility of potential side effects of the contrast medium. In order to solve this problem, it is thought that it will be possible to contribute to an accurate and safe examination by extracting the effective atomic number using dual-energy CT without contrast enhancement. Based on this study, future research will be conducted on the detection of pancreatic cancer using the HU value of pancreatic cancer based on clinical images.
